Naïve Bayes Classifier: A Mapreduce Approach, Songtao Zheng Jan 2014

Naïve Bayes Classifier: A Mapreduce Approach, Songtao Zheng

Computer Science

Machine learning algorithms have the advantage of making use of the powerful Hadoop distributed computing platform and the MapReduce programming model to process data in parallel. Many machine learning algorithms have been investigated to be transformed to the MapReduce paradigm in order to make use of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). Naïve Bayes classifier is one of the supervised learning classification algorithm that can be programmed in form of MapReduce. In our study, we build a Naïve Bayes MapReduce model and evaluate the classifier on five datasets based on the prediction accuracy. Also, a scalability analysis is conducted to …

Female Factor And Team Projects: A Social Sensitivity Perspective, Sourabh Khosla Jan 2014

Female Factor And Team Projects: A Social Sensitivity Perspective, Sourabh Khosla

Computer Science

Software Development is a complex, time-consuming task wherein a team must collaborate effectively over a long period of time. Achieving maximum productivity and quality requires commitment. A recent MIT study concluded that teams with greater Social Sensitivity perform better on collaborative tasks, with Social Sensitivity defined as a measurable empathic ability to grasp others' feelings and perspectives. However, this study was based on generic tasks (solving visual puzzles, agreeing on moral judgments, and negotiating over limited resources) that were completed in a matter of hours. In contrast, software development projects require teams to work on more complex tasks of longer …

An Artificial Immune System Heuristic In A Smart Electrical Grid, Md. Minhaz Chowdhury Jan 2014

An Artificial Immune System Heuristic In A Smart Electrical Grid, Md. Minhaz Chowdhury

Computer Science

The immune system of the human body follows a process that is adaptive and learns via experience. Some algorithms are designed to take advantage of this process to determine solutions for complex problem domains. The collection of these algorithms is known as Artificial Immune Systems. Among this collection, one important algorithm is "The Danger Theory." In this thesis, an application of the algorithm has been implemented to solve an electrical grid problem. This problem of interest is the automatic detection of faulty and failure conditions in the electrical grid. A novel application of the Artificial Immune System algorithm is presented …

Mainstreaming Critical Disability Studies Towards Undoing The Last Prejudice, Colleen Ann Mcdonald-Morken Jan 2014

Mainstreaming Critical Disability Studies Towards Undoing The Last Prejudice, Colleen Ann Mcdonald-Morken

Education

According to critical disability studies scholars, disablism may be the fundamental system of unearned advantaging and disadvantaging upon which all other notions of difference-as-deviance are constructed. If so, a deeply critical and intersectional investigation of enabled privilege/disablism prepares a grounding from which seeds of novel and effective approaches to social and educational justice may be cultivated. Whether or not disablism holds this pivotal position, the costs to us all in terms of personal, ethical, professional, and financial losses are too steep, have always been too steep. In this disquisition I begin by arguing for the prioritizing and centering of a …

Purpose: Although risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus and adenocarcinomas of the esophagus (EA), gastric cardia (GC), and other (noncardia) gastric (OG) sites have been identified, little is known about interactions among risk factors. We sought to examine interactions of diet, other lifestyle, and medical factors with risks of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancers. Methods: We used classification tree analysis to analyze data from a population-based case-control study (1095 cases, 687 controls) conducted in Connecticut, New Jersey, and western Washington State. Results: Frequency of reported gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms was the most important risk stratification factor …

The Absence Of Parenting Students’ Rights: How And Why Title Ix Tolerates Discriminatory Attendance Policies, Elizabeth M. Hady Jan 2014

The Absence Of Parenting Students’ Rights: How And Why Title Ix Tolerates Discriminatory Attendance Policies, Elizabeth M. Hady

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the gaps in Title IX protections for parenting students, particularly female students, and highlights how societal stigma and discursive frameworks undermine their rights. It argues that while Title IX prohibits sex discrimination, its implementation often fails to address the unique challenges faced by parenting students, especially mothers, who are disproportionately affected by rigid attendance policies and discriminatory attitudes. The analysis emphasizes the role of "contamination discourse," which stigmatizes teenage mothers as irresponsible and a threat to societal morals, further eroding their legal protections and perpetuating inequality in education.

Affect And Overconfidence: A Laboratory Investigation, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee Jan 2014

Affect And Overconfidence: A Laboratory Investigation, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee

Economics

We conduct two incentivized random-assignment experiments to investigate whether overconfidence is impacted by (1) incidental mild positive affect, or (2) incidental mild negative affects-anger, fear, and sadness. We measure overconfidence using overestimation of past quiz-performance and overestimation of past quiz-performance compared to peers. The results of the first experiment indicate that the effect of positive affect on both measures of overconfidence is positive and significant for male subjects. While mood-inducement is equally successful for female subjects, their overconfidence is unaffected by positive affect. These positive-affect results are robust to various specification checks. In the second experiment, we find consistent evidence …

Devant ce constat, l’IRSST a subventionné une étude sur les ART au Québec. Celle-ci comporte deux volets qui font chacun l’objet d’une publication distincte. Le premier volet est constitué d’une revue de …

Mitigating The Impacts Of The Renewable Energy Gold Rush, Amy Wilson Morris, Jessica Owley Jan 2014

Mitigating The Impacts Of The Renewable Energy Gold Rush, Amy Wilson Morris, Jessica Owley

Journal Articles

Solar energy developers have turned their sights on California’s deserts. Since 2010, local, state, and federal agencies have approved nearly 9,000 megawatts (MW) of solar energy projects in the California desert, including more than 3,000 MW on public lands. The 9,000 MW of approved projects (if all are developed) would require approximately 63,000 acres of total desert land with 21,000 federal acres. The scale of proposed landscape change is unprecedented. Solar energy facilities can be more land-intensive than other forms of energy generation. Because of concern about the potentially devastating impacts of climate change, most major environmental groups have expressed …

Egonet: Identification Of Human Disease Ego-Network Modules, Rendong Yang, Yun Bai, Zhaohui Qin, Tianwei Yu Jan 2014

Egonet: Identification Of Human Disease Ego-Network Modules, Rendong Yang, Yun Bai, Zhaohui Qin, Tianwei Yu

PCOM Scholarly Works

Background: Mining novel biomarkers from gene expression profiles for accurate disease classification is challenging due to small sample size and high noise in gene expression measurements. Several studies have proposed integrated analyses of microarray data and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks to find diagnostic subnetwork markers. However, the neighborhood relationship among network member genes has not been fully considered by those methods, leaving many potential gene markers unidentified. The main idea of this study is to take full advantage of the biological observation that genes associated with the same or similar diseases commonly reside in the same neighborhood of molecular networks. Results: …

Dopaminergic And Activity-Dependent Modulation Of Mechanosensory Responses In Drosophila Melanogaster Larvae, Josh S. Titlow Jan 2014

Dopaminergic And Activity-Dependent Modulation Of Mechanosensory Responses In Drosophila Melanogaster Larvae, Josh S. Titlow

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

A central theme of this dissertation is nervous system plasticity. Activity-dependent plasticity and dopaminergic modulation are two processes by which neural circuits adapt their function to developmental and environmental changes. These processes are involved in basic cognitive functions and can contribute to neurological disorder. An important goal in modern neurobiology is understanding how genotypic variation influences plasticity, and leveraging the quantitative genetics resources in model organisms is a valuable component of this endeavor. To this end I investigated activity-dependent plasticity and dopaminergic modulation in Drosophila melanogaster larvae using neurobiological and genetic approaches.

Larval mechanosensory behavior is described in Chapter 2. …

The Jak/Stat Pathway Is Reutilized In Drosophila Spermatogenesis, Lingfeng Tang Jan 2014

The Jak/Stat Pathway Is Reutilized In Drosophila Spermatogenesis, Lingfeng Tang

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

In the Drosophila testis, sperm are derived from germline stem cells (GSCs) which undergo a stereotyped pattern of divisions and differentiation. The somatic cells at the tip of the testis form the hub, which is the niche for both the somatic cyst stem cells (CySCs) and GSCs. The hub expresses Upd, a ligand for the JAK/STAT pathway that has roles in the maintenance of CySCs and GSCs. Male mutants of upd3, another ligand of the JAK/STAT pathway, become sterile much earlier than the wild-type, leading to the hypothesis that similar to upd, upd3 also promotes the self-renewal of …

Structural Mechanisms Of Glucan Phosphatase Activity In Starch Metabolism, David A. Meekins Jan 2014

Structural Mechanisms Of Glucan Phosphatase Activity In Starch Metabolism, David A. Meekins

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Starch is a water-insoluble glucose biopolymer used as an energy cache in plants and is synthesized and degraded in a diurnal cycle. Reversible phosphorylation of starch granules regulates the solubility and, consequentially, the bioavailability of starch glucans to degradative enzymes. Glucan phosphatases release phosphate from starch glucans and their activity is essential to the proper diurnal metabolism of starch. Previously, the structural basis of glucan phosphatase activity was entirely unknown. The work in this dissertation outlines the structural mechanism of activity of two plant glucan phosphatases called Starch EXcess4 (SEX4) and Like Sex Four2 (LSF2). The crystal structures of SEX4 …

Hybrid Power System Options For Off-Grid Rural Electrification In Northern Kenya, June M. Lukuyu, Judith Cardell Jan 2014

Hybrid Power System Options For Off-Grid Rural Electrification In Northern Kenya, June M. Lukuyu, Judith Cardell

Engineering: Faculty Publications

For domestic consumers in the rural areas of northern Kenya, as in other developing countries, the typical source of electrical supply is diesel generators. However, diesel generators are associated with both CO2 emissions, which adversely affect the environment and increase diesel fuel prices, which inflate the prices of consumer goods. The Kenya government has taken steps towards addressing this issue by proposing The Hybrid Mini-Grid Project, which involves the installation of 3 MW of wind and solar energy systems in facilities with existing diesel generators. However, this project has not yet been implemented. As a contribution to this effort, this …

When A Home Is Not A House: The Destruction Of Romani Personal Property As A Human Rights Violation, Karolina Grygierowska Jan 2014

When A Home Is Not A House: The Destruction Of Romani Personal Property As A Human Rights Violation, Karolina Grygierowska

Emory International Law Review

This Comment provides a new perspective on Romani legal issues typically overlooked by scholars by not simply focusing on major human rights issues classically discussed in light of the mistreatment of the Roma. Instead, this Comment examines legal issues that are not classified as human rights violations but impact the Roma in ways that rise to the level of a human rights violation based on their unique background and culture. By focusing on the destruction of chattels and personal property, this Comment evaluates the effectiveness of legal claims for actions that may rise to the level of human rights violations …
