Teacher Professionalism: What Educators Can Learn From Social Workers, Mary Antony Bair Jan 2014

Teacher Professionalism: What Educators Can Learn From Social Workers, Mary Antony Bair

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Although there are numerous calls to enhance the professionalism of teachers, there is little empirical research in the United States that examines educators’ understanding of the concept. This exploratory case study compared the conceptualization of professionalism by faculty and students in a college of education vis-à-vis the conceptualization of the construct by faculty and students in a school of social work. Findings revealed that participants in the education program expressed individualistic and somewhat restricted views of professionalism. Social work faculty and some social work students, on the other hand, expressed a collective and extended view of the concept. These findings …

Listen To The Story: Banksy, Tyler The Creator, And The Growing Nihilistic Mindset, Duri Long Jan 2014

Listen To The Story: Banksy, Tyler The Creator, And The Growing Nihilistic Mindset, Duri Long

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

Art, as an expression of feelings, worldviews, and personal beliefs, is a reflection of our environment and how we interact with it. In this way, urban art such as rap music and graffiti can serve as a lens through which we are able to examine the state of the urban environment. Building on community literature that addresses the presence of nihilism in rap music, this work will establish that nihilism is a prevalent theme in the work of two artists: Tyler the Creator's rap music and BANKSY's graffiti art. By examining the growing subculture and appeal of urban art in …

Debtors As Predators: The Proper Interpretation Of "A Statement Respecting The Debtor's . . . Financial Condition" In 11 U.S.C. § 523(A)(2)(A) And (B), Mallory Velten Jan 2014

Debtors As Predators: The Proper Interpretation Of "A Statement Respecting The Debtor's . . . Financial Condition" In 11 U.S.C. § 523(A)(2)(A) And (B), Mallory Velten

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

U.S. Courts of Appeals disagree on the correct interpretation of the phrase "statement respecting the debtor's . . . financial condition" as it appears in the exceptions to discharge in 11 U.S.C. § 523(a)(2)(A), the fraud provision, and § 523(a)(2)(B), the false written statement provision. Two major viewpoints have emerged-the strict and the relaxed. Under the strict interpretation, for the fraud provisions to apply, the statement must comprise the overall financial condition of the debtor. According to the relaxed interpretation, the debtor's fraudulent assertion of ownership of only a single item of property constitutes a statement respecting the debtor's financial …

Apelin Regulation Of K-Cl Cotransport In Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells., Neelima Sharma Jan 2014

Apelin Regulation Of K-Cl Cotransport In Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells., Neelima Sharma

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerosis and high circulating levels of oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL) are considered among the most important risk factors for the occurrence and development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). During the atherosclerotic lesion repair, phenotypic transition of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from contractile to synthetic states plays a central role. In this process, enhanced proliferation/migration of VSMCs, from the tunica media to the intima, is required to sustain blood vessel endothelium integrity, and for inducing vessel wall remodeling in response to injury. At the molecular level, the activity of electroneutral potassium-chloride cotransporters or KCCs, is necessary to: a) allow changes …

Binding And Entry Mechanisms Of Adenovirus In Polarized Epithelial Cells, Trisha Lynn Brockman Jan 2014

Binding And Entry Mechanisms Of Adenovirus In Polarized Epithelial Cells, Trisha Lynn Brockman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Adenovirus's primary receptor, the Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR), has two transmembrane isoforms with differential localization within polarized epithelial cells (CAREx7 (basolateral), CAREx8 (apical)). I hypothesized that each isoform of CAR is degraded at different rates and is regulated by Src-family kinases. Increasing or decreasing the concentration of CAR is predicted to directly alter adenoviral entry. To test this hypothesis, inducible Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell lines either expressing CAREx7, CAREx8, or mCherry, under a doxycycline-inducible promoter were used in pulse-chase structured experiments to calculate the half-lives of these proteins. Alternatively, a polarized model lung epithelium (CaLu-3) treated with …

Development Of A Student Self-Reported Instrument To Assess Course Reform, R.C. Morris, Loran Carleton Parker, David Nelson, Matthew D. Pistilli, Adam Hagen, Chantal Levesque-Bristol, Gabriela Weaver

IMPACT Publications

This study examines the development and implementation of a survey-based instrument assessing the effectiveness of a course redesign initiative focused on student centeredness at a large midwestern university in the United States. Given the scope of the reform initiative under investigation in this study, researchers developed an instrument called the Classroom Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), which was administered to students enrolled in redesigned courses. Early findings demonstrate strong construct validity and internal reliability of the CEQ instrument as well as concurrent validity between the CEQ and observation data gathered in concert with self-report data. The authors conclude that in the absence …

Effects Of Stress, Acute Alcohol Treatment, Or Both On Pre-Pulse Inhibition In High- And Low-Alcohol Preferring Mice, Matthew S. Powers, Julia Chester Jan 2014

Effects Of Stress, Acute Alcohol Treatment, Or Both On Pre-Pulse Inhibition In High- And Low-Alcohol Preferring Mice, Matthew S. Powers, Julia Chester

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (PPI) is a measure of sensorimotor gating frequently used to assess information processing in both humans and rodents. Both alcohol and stress exposure can modulate PPI, making it possible to assess how stress and alcohol interact to influence information processing. Humans with an increased genetic risk for alcoholism are more reactive to stressful situations compared to those without a family history, and alcohol may have stress-dampening effects for those with high genetic risk. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of stress, acute alcohol exposure, or both on PPI …

Deploying And Testing Integrated Design Roadmaps For Advanced Energy Retrofits, Kristen Albee, Franca Trubiano, Meghan Brennan

International High Performance Buildings Conference

This paper details the deployment of the Integrated Design (ID) Advanced Energy Retrofit (AER) Roadmap for the energy efficient renovation of small to medium-sized commercial buildings in the US. The ID process discussed in this paper was developed as part of a suite of market targeted process documents and is the result of research sponsored by the US Department of Energy at the CBEI – Consortium for Building Energy Innovation (formerly the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub). The three-tiered document suite instructs and empowers owners, project managers, financial investors, architecture, engineering, and construction professionals, as well as energy modeling and measurement …
