Factor Analysis And Predictive Ability Of A Teacher-Completed Autism Rating Scale In An Urban School Setting, Dana Milakovic Jan 2014

Factor Analysis And Predictive Ability Of A Teacher-Completed Autism Rating Scale In An Urban School Setting, Dana Milakovic

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Autism screening tools have not traditionally been developed for use in an urban setting with students of minority status or from a low SES home. Scales have also traditionally lacked a focus on school behaviors. The Social Communication Screener for Schools (SCSS) was developed in order to assist school psychologists in an urban school setting in referring students who, following a full evaluation, were most likely to qualify for an educational diagnosis of Autism. The goal of the scale was to focus on using teacher ratings of language-based behaviors in the school setting to assess behaviors linked with Autism. The …

Assessing Transgender Attitudes Toward Health Care: Can These Attitudes Help Predict Health Outcomes?, Sara M. Shane Jan 2014

Assessing Transgender Attitudes Toward Health Care: Can These Attitudes Help Predict Health Outcomes?, Sara M. Shane

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Research has identified the fact that race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, education level, geographic location, help seeking behaviors, and experiences of discrimination are associated with health outcomes. In addition, attitudes towards providers can also help determine health outcomes. The transgender community experiences barriers to health care services and therefore their overall health is affected. There is not a sufficient amount of literature that assesses, using standardized measure, the attitudes of the transgender community and their health. The present study will assess the attitudes of the transgender community toward health care (mental and medical health) and, using standardized measures, …

Prothoracicotropic Hormone-Producing Neurosecretory Neurons And Antioxidative Defense In Midgut Of Lymantria Dispar In Trophic Stress, Vesna Peric Mataruga, Milena Vlahovic, Marija Mrdakovic, Dajana Todorovic, Dragana Matic, Anja Gavrilovic, Larisa Ilijin

Turkish Journal of Biology

As a very invasive insect species, Lymantria dispar is adaptable and sensitive to a changing environment. In insects the neuroendocrine system first reacts to stress by production of prothoracicotropic neurohormones (PTTH) that control ecdysteroid synthesis (morphogenetic and stress hormones). In this article, we report changes in the L2' brain neurosecretory neurons that synthesize PTTH in L. dispar larvae after feeding on locust tree leaves (Robinia pseudoacacia), an unsuitable host plant. Groups of larvae (n = 20 per experimental group) were offered this in comparison with oak leaves (Quercus robur), a suitable control diet, for 3 days after molting into the …

Progesterone Receptor Modulators In Breast Cancer, Ronald D. Wiehle Jan 2014

Progesterone Receptor Modulators In Breast Cancer, Ronald D. Wiehle

Turkish Journal of Biology

Breast cancer has been treated successfully with selective estrogen receptor antagonists (SERMs) such as tamoxifen, receptor-depleting agents such as fulvestrant, and aromatase inhibitors such as anastrozole. Selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs or PRMs) have not been studied as much and are currently under investigation for inhibition of mammary carcinogenesis in animal models and breast cancer prevention trials in women. They might follow tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors in the adjuvant treatment of breast cancers with acquired resistance. These uses have not provoked ground-breaking progress or studies and PRMs do not have a high profile. Most in vitro and in vivo studies …

Loss Of Heterozygosity In Ing3 And Ing5 Genes In Breast Cancer, Esra Gündüz, Gökhan Nas, Muradi̇ye Acar, Eyyüp Üçtepe, Mi̇kdat Bozer, Murat Öznur, Reyhan Bayrak, Mehmet Gündüz

Turkish Journal of Biology

The tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) ING3 and ING5, members of the inhibitor of growth gene family, are effective in inhibition of cell growth and induction of apoptosis. However, in many cancer types, one of the alleles of a TSG is lost through carcinogenesis, while the remaining allele is usually inactivated through a process called loss of heterozygosity (LOH). Previous studies in head and neck cancer revealed that allelic loss and reduced expression is a common pattern of ING gene family members. Fifty paraffin-embedded breast cancer tissues were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and denatured-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for LOH status. The …

The Role Of Laryngeal Function In Breathing For Singing, Ellen V. Graham Jan 2014

The Role Of Laryngeal Function In Breathing For Singing, Ellen V. Graham

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Poor breath management is problematic for singing. Voice students and singing teachers typically attribute breath management issues to abdominal-diaphragmatic breathing technique. The present study seeks to determine whether glottal insufficiency may also contribute to singer’s breath management problems. Studies have revealed a relationship between incomplete vocal fold closure and inefficiency in the speaking voice. However, the effect of incomplete vocal fold closure on vocal efficiency in singers has yet to be determined. Since the larynx cannot be observed without the assistance of clinical instrumentation, not readily available in the voice studio, issues at the glottal level may be underappreciated as …

The Effect Of Family Centered Music Therapy Sessions On Relaxation States Of Informal Caregivers Of Hospice And Palliative Care Patients, Adrienne Claire Steiner

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Advances in healthcare and shifts toward patient and family centered care have allowed healthcare professionals to focus on the entirety of a patient and what affects his/her health. In noting such changes, and in consideration of what affects quality of life, findings in the literature address the physiological and physiological differences between those who are caregivers versus those who are not caregivers. This study investigated the relaxation state of those who were considered informal caregivers of hospice and palliative patients in an acute hospitalized setting.

A family centered music therapy session was conducted utilizing a music-‐ assisted relaxation intervention incorporating …

Gross domestic product (GDP) is one of the most widely watched and reported statistic of economic assessment. It measures the market value of all final goods and services produced in a country for a year. The White House, Congress, the Federal Reserve, Wall Street and business all use it for various purposes for preparing the Federal budget to planning production and investment. It is clear that GDP is widely utilized by countries, international agencies and the popular media and is an influential factor in domestic and global policy, legislature and debate. The GDP is only a measure for economic activity …

The Concept Of Creativity In Art And In Science: Are Autistic People Creative?, Miguel López Astorga Jan 2014

The Concept Of Creativity In Art And In Science: Are Autistic People Creative?, Miguel López Astorga

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Usually, autism is said to be characterized by certain difficulties related to lack of creativity. In this paper, based on the arguments offered by McKenzie and paying attention to the neurodiversity perspective, it is held that the concept of creativity has not been understood correctly, and that, if the artistic field is considered, it can be stated that people with autism can be creative, because creativity can be linked to repetition and details. In this way, it is argued that the repetitive and thorough actions that autistic people often make can have beneficial impacts on art, on the development of …

Treatment Of Hallux Valgus With A Chevron Osteotomy Combined With A Lateral Release, Selina Silva, Richard A. Miller Jan 2014

Treatment Of Hallux Valgus With A Chevron Osteotomy Combined With A Lateral Release, Selina Silva, Richard A. Miller

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Purpose: Current literature recommends proximal first metatarsal osteotomy for large hallux valgus deformities. Combined distal osteotomy with lateral release can be done and may provide a similar degree of correction. The concern with this technique is disruption of the blood supply to the first metatarsal head. We hypothesized that a chevron osteotomy in conjunction with a lateral release is effective in correcting some larger hallux valgus deformities without causing disruption of the blood supply to the first metatarsal head.

Methods: We reviewed the imaging studies of fortysix cases that underwent a distal chevron osteotomy with lateral release for correction of …

The Relationship Between Stressful Life Events And The Development And Maintenance Of Stuttering, Christine Dits Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Stressful Life Events And The Development And Maintenance Of Stuttering, Christine Dits

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Few studies have been conducted examining the impact of stressful life events on the course of one’s stuttering. However, research reveals that stressful life events (i.e., divorce, death, or new move) increase the likelihood of the onset of stuttering (Guitar, 2006). This study investigated whether stressful life events in the life of a person who stutters (PWS) have caused and/or maintained stuttering over one’s lifetime. A qualitative research design was utilized to measure the intended outcomes. Methodology included a 30 to 60 minute phone interview and three questionnaires measuring locus of control, the effects of traumatic events and stuttering on …
