Anomie: Concept, Theory, Research Promise, Max Coleman Jan 2014

Anomie: Concept, Theory, Research Promise, Max Coleman

Honors Papers

The term anomie has declined in the sociology literature. Apart from brief mentions, it has not featured in the American Sociological Review for sixteen years. Moreover, the term has narrowed and is now used almost exclusively to discuss deviance. This project explores Durkheim's original use of the term, and whether modifications of his work--by Merton, Parsons, and others--are useful or muddling. We also present critiques of the term, evaluating them in light of Durkheim's intentions. Possible explanations for the decline of anomie theory are given, including academic explanations (e.g., classical sociology was replaced by newer theories like symbolic interactionism) and …

Hearing Beyond The Veil: Benjy Compson And The Acousmatic Experience, Adam Hirsch Jan 2014

Hearing Beyond The Veil: Benjy Compson And The Acousmatic Experience, Adam Hirsch

Honors Papers

The purpose of this project is to examine the perceptive systems and listening practices of Benjy Compson, the first narrator in William Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury," through the lens of acousmatic theory. I will consider Faulkner 's writing and Pierre Schaeffer's theories of sound as critical analogs for one another, in that our engagement with acousmatics opens channels of investigation into sound and aurality in the Benjy section that wouldn't be available otherwise, and vice versa. My main goal is to prove that 1) Benjy's consciousness; 2) Faulkner's structuring of the first section of the novel; and 3) …

"The Nurceryes For Church And Common-Wealth": A Reconstruction Of Childhood, Children, And The Family In Seventeenth-Century Puritan New England, William C. Gautier Jan 2014

"The Nurceryes For Church And Common-Wealth": A Reconstruction Of Childhood, Children, And The Family In Seventeenth-Century Puritan New England, William C. Gautier

Honors Papers

The changes in the understanding of childhood and children in colonial New England marked a swift and profound departure from English family norms prior to 1630. Casting off the intellectual baggage of childhood and the family mores that had accompanied the Puritans across the Atlantic, New Englanders reconceptualized children as central to the mission in the wilderness. In this thesis, I argue that New Englanders connected, both implicitly and explicitly, the well being of the colony's children directly with the future health of New England and sought to capitalize on this connection in unique, at times self-serving, ways. To best …

The Rise And Fall Of Social Problems: Alcohol And Tobacco In Oberlin, Jung Han Guel Jan 2014

The Rise And Fall Of Social Problems: Alcohol And Tobacco In Oberlin, Jung Han Guel

Honors Papers

Oberlin students had lost interest in the prohibition and temperance cause by the time they became popular in the rest of America, particularly during the 1910s and 1920s when the Prohibition movement outside Oberlin was the fiercest. Meanwhile, the students' indifference toward alcohol was replaced by activism of another sort; the tobacco ban, which was enforced since the founding days of the town and college, was lifted and modified in the winter of 1918, two years before national Prohibition of alcohol.

From the theoretical framework of constructionist model of social problems, this paper examines how the rise of individualism and …

The Influence Of Possible Selves On Global Citizenship Identification, Marion E. Blake, Stephen Reysen Jan 2014

The Influence Of Possible Selves On Global Citizenship Identification, Marion E. Blake, Stephen Reysen

Faculty Publications

We examined the influence of a ‘possible self’ activity on antecedents, identification, and outcomes of global citizenship. Participants wrote about either hoped-for selves as active global citizens, feared selves as inactive global citizens, or a typical day (control) and then answered questions to gauge their global citizen identification. Results show that the saliency of a feared self as an inactive global citizen led to greater identification with the global citizen identity. A structural equation model shows that feared self (vs hoped-for self) predicted greater global citizenship identification, through the perception of one’s normative environment as prescribing a global citizen identity …

Responding To Environmental Injustice: The Civil Rights Act And American Federal Institutional And Systemic Barriers To Private Redress Of Disparate Environmental Harm, Michael B. Jones, Peter J. Jacques Jan 2014

Responding To Environmental Injustice: The Civil Rights Act And American Federal Institutional And Systemic Barriers To Private Redress Of Disparate Environmental Harm, Michael B. Jones, Peter J. Jacques

Florida A & M University Law Review

This article discusses the use of private action in federal institutions for relief from disparate racial impacts. The courts have eliminated consideration of § 602 disparate impact regulations as the basis for a private right of action challenging environmental harms. Legislative action seems unlikely in this era of gridlock and partisan polarization. Agency action seems to offer the most avenues for consideration of environmental justice concerns. However, agencies are bureaucratic and subject to election results, Congressional oversight and budgetary limitations, and backlogs of determination of environmental justice complaints. Deeply rooted systemic institutional racism further constrains possible reforms to the federal …

Bitcoin, The Law And Emerging Public Policy: Towards A 21st Century Regulatory Scheme, Gregory M. Karch

Florida A & M University Law Review

Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized digital currency. According to Lawrence Lessig, cryptography is "the most important technological breakthrough in the last one thousand years" and will be transformative. Bitcoin, capitalizing on cryptography, is a revolutionary digital currency protocol--a software system capable of tracking financial transactions without the need for a third party intermediary. The Bitcoin software is a "community-driven open source project released under an MIT license.”

This paper begins by briefly reviewing the mechanics of Bitcoin in Section I. Section II then surveys the rapidly expanding uses of Bitcoin, as well as the emerging application of Bitcoin. Since …

Education Rights And The New Due Process, Areto A. Imoukuede Jan 2014

Education Rights And The New Due Process, Areto A. Imoukuede

Journal Publications

This Article argues for a human dignity-based, due process clause analysis to recognize the fundamental duty of government to provide high quality, public education. Access to public education is a fundamental duty, or positive fundamental right because education is a basic human need and a constituent part of all democratic rights. In The Fifth Freedom, I argued that there is a fundamental duty under the U.S. Constitution to provide public education and that the reason a fundamental right to public education has not been recognized is because of a profound confusion regarding fundamental rights as duties.' The Court is biased …

Transmural Heterogeneity Of Cellular Level Cardiac Contractile Properties In Aging And Heart Failure, Premi Haynes Jan 2014

Transmural Heterogeneity Of Cellular Level Cardiac Contractile Properties In Aging And Heart Failure, Premi Haynes

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

The left ventricle of the heart relaxes when it fills with blood and contracts to eject blood into circulation to meet the body’s metabolic demands. Dysfunction in either relaxation or contraction of the left ventricle can lead to heart failure. Transmural heterogeneity is thought to contribute to normal ventricular wall motion but it is not well understood how transmural modifications affect the failing left ventricle. The overall hypothesis of this dissertation is that normal left ventricles exhibit transmural heterogeneity in cellular level contractile properties and with aging and heart failure there are region-specific changes in cellular level contractile mechanisms.

Age …

Peer-To-Peer Based Trading And File Distribution For Cloud Computing, Ping Yi Jan 2014

Peer-To-Peer Based Trading And File Distribution For Cloud Computing, Ping Yi

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

In this dissertation we take a peer-to-peer approach to deal with two specific issues, fair trading and file distribution, arisen from data management for cloud computing.

In mobile cloud computing environment cloud providers may collaborate with each other and essentially organize some dedicated resources as a peer to peer sharing system. One well-known problem in such peer to peer systems with exchange of resources is free riding. Providing incentives for peers to contribute to the system is an important issue in peer to peer systems. We design a reputation-based fair trading mechanism that favors peers with higher reputation. Based on …

Shareholder Engagement And Chevron’S Policy 520 On Human Rights: The Role Played By The United States Jesuit Conference’S “National Jesuit Committee On Investment Responsibility”, Nicholas J. C. Santos, John Sealey, Austin G. C. Onuoha

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

To demonstrate how the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in the United States through the “National Jesuit Committee on Investment Responsibility” played a significant role as a socially conscious institutional and religious investor in influencing Chevron’s Human Rights Policy 520 and to analyze the factors that contributed to a successful shareholder engagement with the company.

Methodology/approach

Case study based on firsthand information.

Findings

  1. Our conclusion offers support for Allen et al.’s (2012) conclusion of legitimacy (credibility) being the dominant force in a successful engagement.

  2. We found that coalition-building is a significant moderating variable in increasing shareholder salience. This finding contradicts …

Home Nowhere: Assorted Prose, Rebecca Fortes Jan 2014

Home Nowhere: Assorted Prose, Rebecca Fortes

HIM 1990-2015

Oftentimes, the children of immigrants find themselves straddling two worlds. As Americanized minorities, we navigate torn psychological landscapes in which uneasy dichotomies are formed: living up to our parents' expectations, or fulfilling our own; embracing tradition, or birthing a new culture; admiring the lives of our family, but wanting different for ourselves. These tough decisions are further compounded by identifiers such as age, race, and gender. My creative thesis, a collection of fiction and nonfiction, examines these issues through three central characters. In fiction, they are the Latina sisters Mel and Nena; in nonfiction, it is myself. Through these stories, …

Imago Dei: Stories, Benjamin Langevin Jan 2014

Imago Dei: Stories, Benjamin Langevin

HIM 1990-2015

Translated from Latin, Imago Dei means the image of God. In the very beginning of the Torah, the writer says that God created humanity in Their own image. According to the text, woven in the fabric of who we are is God. In a post-secular society, the concept of God brings a lot of weight and baggage. Which God are we talking about? Can God be talked about it? Is God or thinking about God even relevant anymore? Hasn't science taken care of it? What good can discussions on faith bring us? These are the questions explored in Imago Dei: …

Growing Together Separately: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Individualism In An Alternative Educational Setting, Jessica L. Warren

Scripps Senior Theses

Alternative educational settings that attempt to challenge Individualism are pervaded by Individualizing influences from the larger school system. This thesis examines the influences of Individualism in a school garden program at a Southern California continuation high school. Program members included high school students, college student interns, and two co-directors. Research was conducted during the spring semester of 2014. By providing an analysis of the Individualizing and non-Individualizing influences present in the program and the ways in which these influences interacted to inform the program structure and program members’ experiences and understandings, my thesis sheds new light on the complex ways …

Healthcare Utilization Among Hispanic Immigrants With Diabetes: Investigating The Effect Of Us Documentation Status, Elizabeth K. Do, Robin K. Matsuyama

Social and Behavioral Sciences Publications

Previous studies have not examined whether documentation status has an effect on healthcare utilization among US Hispanic immigrants with diabetes. A secondary analysis was conducted using data from the Pew Hispanic Center and Robert Johnson Wood Foundation’s 2007 Hispanic Healthcare Survey. Hispanic immigrants diagnosed with diabetes were included in analyses. The association between documentation status and healthcare utilization was assessed using logistic regressions. Of N = 577 Hispanic immigrants with diabetes, 80 % were documented immigrants and 81 % reported having visited a healthcare provider in the last 6 months. Adjusting for confounders, those who were undocumented faced higher odds …

Life Cycle Dynamics Of The Harmful Bloom Forming Macroalgae Ulva Spp. In Narragansett Bay, Ri, Elaine Potter

Open Access Master's Theses

Macroalgal blooms occur worldwide and have the potential to cause severe ecological and economic damage. Narragansett Bay, RI is a eutrophic system that experiences summer macroalgal blooms composed mostly of Ulva compressa and Ulva rigida. All Ulva species have isomorphic, biphasic life cycles, and the relative contribution of the haploid and diploid life history stages to bloom formation is poorly understood. In this study, we used flow cytometry to assess ploidy levels of U. compressa and U. rigida populations from five sites in Narragansett Bay, RI, USA. Both haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes were present for both species. Sites …

Predicting Readiness To Seek Mental Health Services In College Students, Uchenna Jones Jan 2014

Predicting Readiness To Seek Mental Health Services In College Students, Uchenna Jones

Open Access Master's Theses

Young adults and adolescents tend to be among the least likely to seek mental health services even when they may benefit from them. This is particularly concerning since most psychological disorders have the highest incidence during this period of development. Researchers have proposed a number of variables that may act as barriers to help seeking including attitudes toward seeking mental health services, mental health literacy, and symptoms of psychological distress. However, much of this research has focused only on correlations among attitudes, symptoms, and help seeking intentions. Furthermore, the assessment of readiness to seek mental health services has been inconsistent …

Impact Of Resistance Training On Bone Mineral Densityand Performance In Competitive Female Gymnasts, Andrew M. Procopio Jan 2014

Impact Of Resistance Training On Bone Mineral Densityand Performance In Competitive Female Gymnasts, Andrew M. Procopio

Open Access Master's Theses

This study investigated the effects of a ten week resistance training intervention on bone mineral density and performance measures in competitive female adolescent gymnasts. Previous research indicates resistance training improves performance and reduces injury risk. Resistance training as a mode to reduce injury risk may be of primary importance in sports with history of high injury rates but low participation in resistance training, such as gymnastics. Sixteen female adolescent gymnasts between the ages of 12-20 competing at Junior Olympic levels 7-10 were recruited. Participants were divided into resistance training (N = 10 age; 13.5±1.00 years, height; 155.19±8.38 cm, weight; 51.58±9.63 …

Interpersonal Relational Characteristics And Stages Of Consistent Condom Use In Sexually Active Adolescent Females, Janan Wyatt Jan 2014

Interpersonal Relational Characteristics And Stages Of Consistent Condom Use In Sexually Active Adolescent Females, Janan Wyatt

Open Access Master's Theses

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) continue to negatively affect young people in the United States, ages 15-24 years old, specifically impacting young woman at a disproportionately high rate. STI infection rates among young Black females are significantly higher than among their white counterparts, and this group continues to be identified as an at-risk population. Condom use has been assessed and encouraged as a prevention strategy for both STI's and unintended pregnancies. Previous research has identified a number of factors that influence condom use in adolescent females, however not enough research has focused on the impact of relational factors on condom use. …
