Neural Network Based Emg Driven Modeling And Control Of Human Walking, Alaa Muheddin Abdulrahman

Theses and Dissertations

Human body modeling (HBM) offers the benefit of replicating human activity into robotics and rehabilitation devices. Gait impairment is a consequence of several diseases like stroke, spinal cord injury, or Parkinson' disease. The modeling techniques developed in robotics have been used to improve gait abnormalities in walking and in building Exoskeletal robots. HBM is resource intensive as it requires setting-up laboratory facilities and using expensive instruments. Further, the data acquired is limited to the number of the participants. In addition, the accuracy of the model is important as it is related to human pathology. In this research, several Matlab based …

Amide Based Metal Complexes For The Catalytic Transformation Of Carbon Dioxide To Cyclic Carbonates, Punnamchandar Ramidi

Theses and Dissertations

Use of carbon dioxide (CO2) for the production of industrially important organic compounds has drawn great deal of attention in recent years, especially in terms of sustainable development based on green chemistry. The use of CO2 as a starting material may replace several toxic C1 synthons such as isocyanates, phosgene etc. Among many reactions involving CO2, synthesis of cyclic carbonate using epoxide under catalytic conditions has drawn major attention. Cyclic carbonates are odorless, colorless, biodegradable solvents which have found several applications as polar solvents, electrolytic material and precursor in the production of polycarbonates as well as pharmaceutical chemicals. However, elevated …

USF Patents

The subject invention concerns materials and methods for detecting nucleic acid sequences. One aspect of the invention concerns a silicon-based “biochip” comprising nucleic acid immobilized thereon. In one embodiment, the silicon comprises microcavities. The nucleic acid to be assayed for the presence of one or more target nucleic acid sequences is immobilized on the silicon. A nucleic acid, such as an oligonucleotide probe, having a sequence substantially complementary to the target nucleic acid sequence can be used to detect the immobilized nucleic acid on the silicon. If the nucleic acid used for detection hybridizes with a target nucleic acid sequence, …

Myoelectric Prostheses: Novel Methodologies For Enhancing Usability And Control, Ghulam Rasool Dec 2014

Myoelectric Prostheses: Novel Methodologies For Enhancing Usability And Control, Ghulam Rasool

Theses and Dissertations

Control of powered prostheses using the information from leftover muscles in amputees is a challenging problem. I investigated the problem with a view to find clinically reliable and robust schemes that can interpret human intent and control a powered prosthesis in real-time. Recently, pattern classification systems have been suggested to map muscle activation patterns to the human intent (or the movement). However, due to the underlying generic structure, system-specific information cannot be exclusively incorporated into pattern classification algorithms. I have proposed two new methodologies in my research. The first one extended the pattern classification with a new feature set comprised …

Capturing The Effects Of Public Opinion Polls On Voter Support In The Ny 25th Congressional Election, Heather Knappen Dec 2014

Capturing The Effects Of Public Opinion Polls On Voter Support In The Ny 25th Congressional Election, Heather Knappen

Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between public opinion polls and voter support and asks whether exposure to a public opinion poll creates an unfair advantage for the candidate winning in that poll. The experimental results from this study were used to test the hypothesis that exposure to an opinion poll, with a wide lead for one of two candidates, would cause voter support to increase for the candidate who was leading in the poll (i.e. a bandwagon effect). In 2012, a random sample of 101 registered voters in the NY 25th Congressional District participated in two telephone surveys. In each …

Ontogenetic Scaling Patterns And Functional Anatomy Of The Pelvic Limb Musculature In Emus (Dromaius Novaehollandiae), Luis P. Lamas, Russell P. Main, John R. Hutchinson

Department of Basic Medical Sciences Faculty Publications

Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are exclusively terrestrial, bipedal and cursorial ratites with some similar biomechanical characteristics to humans. Their growth rates are impressive, as their body mass increases eighty-fold from hatching to adulthood whilst maintaining the same mode of locomotion throughout life. These ontogenetic characteristics stimulate biomechanical questions about the strategies that allow emus to cope with their rapid growth and locomotion, which can be partly addressed via scaling (allometric) analysis of morphology. In this study we have collected pelvic limb anatomical data (muscle architecture, tendon length, tendon mass and bone lengths) and calculated muscle physiological cross sectional area …

Effective And Ethical Sales Communication For Pharmaceutical Representatives, John Paul Recinto Dec 2014

Effective And Ethical Sales Communication For Pharmaceutical Representatives, John Paul Recinto

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

There are so many different communication styles utilized by pharmaceutical sales representatives. This thesis handles the quandary of whether those communication styles are not only effective among the interactions with medical providers, but whether those effective means of communicating are embedded with ethical communication as well. The theory of symbolic interactionism and the philosophical basis of persuasive speech expound on the methodology pharmaceutical sales representatives implement with the people he or she encounters. Medical providers also need to perceive that their encounters with pharmaceutical sales representatives are congruently effective and ethical interactions, which is revealed by qualitative research methods in …

Characterizing Fetal Sleep States Of Iugr And Low-Risk Fetuses Using Fetal Magnetocardiography, Bhargavi Sriram

Theses and Dissertations

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a fetal condition characterized by growth-rate reduction. Afflicted fetuses tend to display abnormalities in heart rate. Hence, studying its heart rate variability (HRV) along with comparisons against normal fetal HRV might give some insight into the heart rate dynamics between the two groups. Heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the prominent markers that could help in identifying fetal distress. Four fetal heart rate patterns were previously defined based on HRV, which can provide clinicians with valuable information regarding fetus health during pregnancy. Past studies that differentiate the HRV with or without considering patterns, have …

Electrophoretic Deposition Of Gallium With High Deposition Rate, Hanfei Zhang, Yiping Mao, Sunand Santhanagopalan, Dennis Desheng Meng

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

In this work, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is reported to form gallium thin film with high deposition rate and low cost while avoiding the highly toxic chemicals typically used in electroplating. A maximum deposition rate of ~0.6 μm/min, almost one order of magnitude higher than the typical value reported for electroplating, is obtained when employing a set of proper deposition parameters. The thickness of the film is shown to increase with deposition time when sequential deposition is employed. The concentration of Mg(NO3)2, the charging salt, is also found to be a critical factor to control the deposition …

Acute Myeloid Leukemia And Fatal Scedosporium Prolificans Sepsis After Eculizumab Treatment For Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: A Case Report, M Hanmantgad, Rajat Nog, Karen Seiter

NYMC Faculty Publications

Eculizumab has become the standard of care for patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). As more patients are treated, the long-term outcomes of these patients will become apparent. We recently treated a patient who developed PNH in the setting of aplastic anemia. The patient developed acute myeloid leukemia less than three years after initiating eculizumab. The patient also died suddenly from Scedosporium sepsis during induction therapy. This patient's course seemed more aggressive than would be expected. The possible effect of complement blockade is discussed.

The Promise Of Novel Molecular Markers In Bladder Cancer, Jahan Miremami, Natasha Kyprianou

Urology Faculty Publications

Bladder cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in the US and is associated with the highest cost per patient. A high likelihood of recurrence, mandating stringent surveillance protocols, has made the development of urinary markers a focus of intense pursuit with the hope of decreasing the burden this disease places on patients and the healthcare system. To date, routine use of markers is not recommended for screening or diagnosis. Interests include the development of a single urinary marker that can be used in place of or as an adjunct to current screening and surveillance techniques, as well identifying a …
