Zinc Oxide Eugenol-Formocresol Root Canal Treatment Fails To Treat A Deciduous Tooth With Dentoalveolar Abcess, Arifa Pediarahma, Mochamad F. Rizal

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Irreversible pulp infection can lead to dentoalveolar abscess. Root canal treatment in deciduous teeth is indicated in irreversible pulp infection to maintain children’s health and deciduous teeth until its exfoliation period. Success rate of endodontic treatment in deciduous teeth can be enhanced by using antimicrobial root canal filling material. Combination of ZOE-formocresol as root canal filling material has a superior antimicrobial property. Unfortunately, based on some research it is also toxic to the tissue. This case report will discuss about failure of root canal treatment in deciduous tooth with dentoalveolar abscess using combination of ZOE-formocresol as obturating material. There are …

Adjunctive Intracoronal Splint In Periodontal Treatment: Report Of Two Cases, Mora Octavia, Yuniarti Soeroso, Yulianti Kemal, Airina Airina

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Reduction of the amount of tooth roots which are embedded in their periodontium could cause tooth mobility. Splinting a weaker tooth with a more stable one, and using the principle of the multiple-root stabilization is one way to overcome tooth mobility. Temporary splinting aims to prevent pathological migration, restore masticatory function, stabilize teeth before/after surgery, and evaluate the prognosis of periodontal treatment. The use of intracoronal splint is still controversial because there are only a few studies that have evaluated the effect of splinting on periodontal health. We report two cases to evaluate the effect of intracoronal splint on periodontal …

Examining The Global Financial Crisis From A Virtue Theory Lens, Aliza D. Racelis Dec 2014

Examining The Global Financial Crisis From A Virtue Theory Lens, Aliza D. Racelis

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

As the financial crisis of 2008-9 has continued to affect the global economy, many wonder whether the proposed solutions contribute to a more stable financial system as well as to better human behaviour. While the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) Report (2011) identified the factors essential to explaining the causes of the financial crisis as having included credit and housing bubbles, nontraditional mortgages, credit ratings and securitization, financial institutions concentrated correlated risk, leverage and liquidity risk, contagion risk, shock and panic, failure in virtue has also been very patent in the crisis, foremost of them being: excessive leverage and imprudent …

Background

Thymic stromal lymphoproetin (TSLP) is a cytokine secreted by the airway epithelium in response to respiratory viruses and it is known to promote allergic Th2 responses in asthma. This study investigated whether virally-induced secretion of TSLP is directional in nature (apical vs. basolateral) and/or if there are TSLP-mediated effects occurring at both sides of the bronchial epithelial barrier in the asthmatic state.

Methods

Primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) from control (n = 3) and asthmatic (n = 3) donors were differentiated into polarized respiratory tract epithelium under air-liquid interface (ALI) conditions and treated apically with dsRNA (viral surrogate) …

Authenticity In Constructivist Inquiry: Assessing An Elusive Construct, Patrick Shannon, Elyse Hambacher Dec 2014

Authenticity In Constructivist Inquiry: Assessing An Elusive Construct, Patrick Shannon, Elyse Hambacher

Education

Methodological rigor in constructivist inquiry is established through an assessment of trustworthiness and authenticity. Trustworthiness parallels the positivistic concepts of internal and external validity, focusing on an assessment of the inquiry process. Authenticity, however, is unique to constructivist inquiry and has no parallel in the positivistic paradigm. Authenticity involves an assessment of the meaningfulness and usefulness of interactive inquiry processes and social change that results from these processes. However, the techniques for ascertaining authenticity are in the early stages of development. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to describe a process for assessing authenticity in a constructivist inquiry. A …

Center Pivot Sprinkler Distribution Uniformity Impacts On The Spatial Variability Of Evapotranspiration, Daniel Howes, Sean Ellenson, Lucas Hoffmann, Franklin Gaudi

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Understanding variable evapotranspiration (ET) throughout a field can help maximize yield on a per-acre basis, as well as assist with proper irrigation scheduling. The results from this study indicate that irrigation system distribution uniformity (DU) has a significant effect on the uniformity of ET during water-stressed periods. The study site involved intensely managed forage (alfalfa and winter grain hay) irrigated by center pivots being supplied with reclaimed water near Palmdale, California. During spring and early summer 2007 the center pivots were operating under deficit irrigation. In 2010, after the installation of reservoirs, water was applied to meet full evapotranspiration (ETc) …

New Measures Of Economic Security And Development: Savings Goals For Short-Term And Long-Term Economic Needs, Yunju Nam, Yungsoo Lee, Shawn Mcmahon, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

The long-term economic security and development of a family depend largely upon saving and asset-accumulation, yet most measures of economic well-being focus on short-term consumption needs. This study takes a broader view, developing precautionary, retirement, homeownership and education savings goals. Together these savings goals constitute a new set of asset-based measures of family financial well-being. Estimated savings needs depend upon family type and other assumptions, and we consider investment gains and differences in dollar values over time in our calculations. This study shows that families should save $155 to $572 every month to address all four savings needs. The number …

Tensile Testing To Quantitate The Anisotropy And Strain Hardening Of Mozzarella Cheese, Ramona Bast, Prateek Sharma, Hannah K.B. Easton, Tzvetelin T. Dessev, Mita Lad, Peter A. Munro

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

We explored anisotropy of mozzarella cheese: its presence is debated in the literature. Tensile testing proved a good method because the location and mode of failure were clear. Mozzarella cheese cut direct from the block showed no significant anisotropy, though confocal microscopy showed good structure alignment at a microscale. Deliberately elongated mozzarella cheese showed strong anisotropy with tensile strength in the elongation or fibre direction ∼3.5× that perpendicular to the fibres. Temperature of elongation had a marked impact on anisotropy with maximum anisotropy after elongation at 70 °C. We suggest the disagreement on anisotropy in the literature is related to …

Tracing The History Of Grounded Theory Methodology: From Formation To Fragmentation, Méabh Kenny, Robert Fourie Dec 2014

Tracing The History Of Grounded Theory Methodology: From Formation To Fragmentation, Méabh Kenny, Robert Fourie

The Qualitative Report

There are very few articles, which track the history of Grounded Theory (GT) methodology from its tentative conception to its present divisions. This journal article addresses the dearth by tracing the history of GT methodology from its conception in the 1960’s, discussing the context of its composition, character, and contribution. Subsequently, the article follows the maturation of GT which is characterised by a series of contentious and, at times, antagonistic academic debates. The crux of these debates centres on disputes over core tenets of GT and have resulted in three dominant and divergent configurations of the GT methodology: Classic, Straussian, …

Evaluating Community Resilience Under Conditions Of An Environmental Disaster: The Case Of The Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill, Naomi W. Lazarus Dec 2014

Evaluating Community Resilience Under Conditions Of An Environmental Disaster: The Case Of The Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill, Naomi W. Lazarus

Doctoral Dissertations

The impact of hazard events on human settlements reflects the complex interaction of social and physical systems that challenge the process of defining and operationalizing risks associated with environmental disasters. The objective of this research is to develop a model that examines the inter-relationships between social capital and livelihoods and to thereby estimate their impacts on levels of hazard risk. Social capital is embedded in social networks and institutional frameworks that determine the quantity and quality of resources and services available to people. The proposed hazard risk location model (HRLM) re-specifies hazard risk as a function of the hazard, exposure, …

Role Of Mycoplasma Gallisepticum And Host Airway Epithelial Cell Interaction In Inflammation, Sanjukta Majumder Dec 2014

Role Of Mycoplasma Gallisepticum And Host Airway Epithelial Cell Interaction In Inflammation, Sanjukta Majumder

Doctoral Dissertations

Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection in chickens is associated with severe inflammation of the trachea, air sacs and lungs. M. gallisepticum cytadheres to the tracheal epithelium and mediates infiltration of macrophages, heterophils and lymphocytes to the tracheal submucosa but the molecular mechanisms underpinning the severe inflammatory response is not well understood. This research focuses on identifying how M. galisepticum and chicken tracheal epithelial cell (TEC) interaction might contribute to this response. The first study identified that M. gallisepticum lipid associated membrane proteins (LAMP) from both virulent and non-virulent strains were able to up-regulate several inflammatory genes from tracheal epithelial cells both in …
