Culture, Caregiving, And Health: Exploring The Influence Of Culture On Family Caregiver Experiences, Jennifer Pharr, Carolee Dodge Francis, Christine Terry, Michele Clark Jan 2014

Culture, Caregiving, And Health: Exploring The Influence Of Culture On Family Caregiver Experiences, Jennifer Pharr, Carolee Dodge Francis, Christine Terry, Michele Clark

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Ethnic minorities are expected to experience a greater demand for family caregiving than non-Latino Whites due to their projected population growth. Although the consensus of researchers on caregiving and culture finds that the caregiving experience differs significantly among cultural/ethnic groups, the question remains as to how cultural values and norms influence the caregiver experiences. We conducted an interpretative, phenomenological qualitative analysis of focus group transcripts from four groups (African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and European American) for cultural influences on caregiving. Data were collected in Nevada between December 7, 2009, and August 20, 2010. Thirty-five caregivers participated in this …

Ethical Guidelines For Social Work Supervisors In Rural Settings, Elizabeth T. Blue, Ann M. Kutzler, Suzanne Macron-Fuller Jan 2014

Ethical Guidelines For Social Work Supervisors In Rural Settings, Elizabeth T. Blue, Ann M. Kutzler, Suzanne Macron-Fuller

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Little research literature exists integrating ethics, supervision, and rural/small community practice. This paper reports results of a study conducted by a joint student-faculty team. The study engaged supervisors in rural and small communities in two Midwestern states in semi-structured interviews. Interview data were then used to develop guidelines for BSW students about what constitutes ethical supervisory practice in rural environments.

Building University-Community Partnerships In Rural Settings Through A Community-Based Learning Assignment, Karen Rice Phd, Lsw, Acsw, Kathleen Walsh

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Universities located in or near rural settings are uniquely positioned to partner with their community to offer invaluable resources often lacking within rural social service agencies. This teaching note describes a community-based research assignment implemented within an MSW advanced research methods course. The goal of this class was to teach students, through service learning, each phase of the evaluation process, and strategies to build and sustain rural community partnerships. Lessons learned and implications for social work practice and education are discussed.

Best Practices In Researching Service-Learning At Community Colleges, Amanda Taggart, Gloria Crisp Jan 2014

Best Practices In Researching Service-Learning At Community Colleges, Amanda Taggart, Gloria Crisp

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

In recent years, an increasing number of community colleges have integrated some form of service-learning into their programs or courses with the idea that it will promote civic engagement, increase student satisfaction with their courses and college experience as a whole, and improve learning outcomes. There is a good amount of research published on service-learning programs and outcomes conducted at four-year institutions, though there is a dearth of studies available on service-learning at community colleges. Because community colleges serve a purpose unique from that of four-year colleges and universities, both in their mission and often in the students they serve, …

Coordination Of Continuous And Discrete Components Of Action, Stephanie L. Kilian Jan 2014

Coordination Of Continuous And Discrete Components Of Action, Stephanie L. Kilian

ETD Archive

Goal-directed movement may contain discrete and continuous components of action. In this experiment, participants moved back and forth between targets using a computer mouse in a cyclical aiming task. It was of interest to examine the relation between a discrete button press on a computer mouse, indicating an attempt at target capture, and the peak position of the corresponding, continuous movement trajectory of the mouse. How might the spatial and temporal relations between those events vary as a function of variations in task constraints? In particular, this experiment varied the target width (W) and amplitude requirement (A), where variations of …

Acoustic And Respiratory Measures As A Function Of Age In The Male Voice, Mark Selent Jan 2014

Acoustic And Respiratory Measures As A Function Of Age In The Male Voice, Mark Selent

ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to extend understanding of the effects of aging on the male voice by obtaining and analyzing both acoustic and respiratory measures across the aging continuum. Aerodynamic measurements such as vital capacity (VC), maximum phonation time (MPT) and the acoustic measurement Speaking Fundamental Frequency (SFF) are used commonly in Speech-language Pathology to aid in the assessment and treatment outcomes of vocal dysfunction. However, current research lacks analysis of the interaction across these parameters within males and younger ages. This information may be important in understanding the normal changes in the speech mechanism with age and …

Reflective Strength-Giving Dialogue Developed To Support Older Adults In Learning To Live With Long-Term Pain: A Method And A Study Design, Catharina Gillsjö, M. Berglund

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background: Long-term musculoskeletal pain is a major health problem that significantly impacts quality of life among older adults. Many lack professional guidance and must learn on their own to live with pain. This calls for a holistic method that addresses older adults’ needs in their situations. The developed method has its foundation in the didactic model: “The challenge – to take control of one’s life with long-term illness.

Aim: The aim was to describe the method, Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogue, and present a study design where the method is learned and used by health careprovidersto support older adults in learning to …

Social Class Myopia: The Case Of Psychology And Labor Unions, Bernice Lott Jan 2014

Social Class Myopia: The Case Of Psychology And Labor Unions, Bernice Lott

Psychology Faculty Publications

This article explores the potential for a research agenda that includes scholarship on working class issues and organized labor. Such an agenda is consistent with the official mission of American Psychological Association—to advance knowledge that benefits society and improves people's lives. I focus on our paucity of interest in the institution that gives the American working class a voice—the labor union. We know that work is one of the central focuses in the lives of most people and that the work experience is deeply implicated in satisfaction with life. The efforts of organized labor to achieve economic fairness and justice, …

Accumulation Of Subcortical Iron As A Modifier Of Volumetric And Cognitive Decline In Healthy Aging: Two Longitudinal Studies, Ana Marie Daugherty Jan 2014

Accumulation Of Subcortical Iron As A Modifier Of Volumetric And Cognitive Decline In Healthy Aging: Two Longitudinal Studies, Ana Marie Daugherty

Wayne State University Dissertations

Accumulation of non-heme iron in the brain has been theorized as a cellular mechanism underlying global neural and cognitive decline in normal aging and neurodegenerative disease. Relatively few studies of brain iron in normal aging exist and extant studies are almost exclusively cross-sectional. Here, I estimated iron content via T2* and measured volumes in several brain regions in two independent samples of healthy adults. The first sample (N = 89) was measured twice with a two-year delay; and the second sample (N = 32) was assessed four times over a span of 7 years. Latent models estimated change in iron …

Advisor: Dr. Patricia Jarosz, PhD, RN

Major: Nursing

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Problem: Many hospital fall prevention studies have shown that having a diagnosis of cancer places patients at higher risk for falls/falls with injury when compared to other hospitalized groups of patients. Few studies have focused solely on cancer patients at risk for falls in the hospital setting. Specifically, this study used Dorothea Orem's theory of self-care (Orem, 2001), and Albert Bandura's (2001), social cognitive theory to determine if factors such as age, gender, health …

Conceptualizing Longitudinal Mixed Methods Designs: A Methodological Review Of Health Sciences Research, Vicki Plano-Clark, Nancy Anderson, Jessica A. Wertz, Yuchun Zhou, Karen Schumacher, Christine Miaskowski Jan 2014

Conceptualizing Longitudinal Mixed Methods Designs: A Methodological Review Of Health Sciences Research, Vicki Plano-Clark, Nancy Anderson, Jessica A. Wertz, Yuchun Zhou, Karen Schumacher, Christine Miaskowski

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Longitudinal research is well suited for investigating phenomena that change over time. With the growing acceptance of mixed methods, researchers are combining qualitative and quantitative approaches within longitudinal research. However, little attention has been paid to how researchers integrate longitudinal mixed methods databases. The purpose of this methodological review was to describe how researchers combine mixed methods and longitudinal approaches in practice and delineate dimensions and issues inherent within these complex designs. We examined published empirical studies from the health sciences that self-identified as longitudinal and mixed methods. Our results identify major dimensions, variations, and issues for designing longitudinal mixed …
