Relationships Among Uncertainty, Coping, And Psychological Distress In Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Jennifer Sjostedt Avery Oct 2014

Relationships Among Uncertainty, Coping, And Psychological Distress In Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Jennifer Sjostedt Avery

Dissertations (1934 -)

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has an average prevalence of 18.9% and most often affects people 60 years of age or older. It is a cognitive stage between normal functioning and dementia (Petersen, 2003; Petersen, 2011; Petersen et al., 2014). MCI can be broken into two subtypes classified by the presence of memory impairment (amnestic MCI) or the lack thereof (nonamnestic MCI). Medical diagnostic criteria are commonly used to guide research with older adults with MCI. A theoretical framework that addresses the antecedents and consequences of MCI, specifically one examining the relationships among MCI, uncertainty, coping and psychological distress, is essential …

Human Sexuality As A Critical Subfield In Social Work, Emily Mccave, Benjamin C. Shepard, Virginia Ramseyer Winter Oct 2014

Human Sexuality As A Critical Subfield In Social Work, Emily Mccave, Benjamin C. Shepard, Virginia Ramseyer Winter

Publications and Research

Human sexuality is of vital importance to social work practitioners, educators, and scholars. Yet historically, the profession’s leadership around it has waxed and waned, impacting practice. This article discusses the importance of human sexuality as a critical subfield within social work. It suggests that the mechanisms, namely textbooks, journals, and national conferences, for stimulating human sexuality social work scholarship are limited. The authors assert that the taboo of human sexuality limits the advancement of a cohesive professional discourse and contributes to the continued oppression of marginalized populations. Recommendations for providing better support for those who study, teach, and practice in …

Signal Detection In Older Individuals With Neurocognitive Disorder, Marty D. Price Oct 2014

Signal Detection In Older Individuals With Neurocognitive Disorder, Marty D. Price

Research Papers

Past research has been inconclusive when assessing older individuals and their responding on stimulus equivalence tasks. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the ability of individuals with neurocognitive disorder (NCD) to detect the presence of a stimulus when presented along with varying amounts of distracter stimuli or “noise”. In this study, two older female participants, ages 71 and 84, with NCD, were asked to participate in a computer based task designed using a visual signal detection procedure. This procedure consisted of three parts, each presented elctronically using a computer and designed to assess their ability to percieve …

Characterization Of Postural Tremor In Essential Tremor Using A Seven-Degree-Of-Freedom Model, Daniel William Geiger Oct 2014

Characterization Of Postural Tremor In Essential Tremor Using A Seven-Degree-Of-Freedom Model, Daniel William Geiger

Theses and Dissertations

Essential Tremor (ET), a condition characterized by postural and kinetic tremor in the upper limbs, is one of the most prevalent movement disorders. While pharmaceutical and surgical treatment options exist, they are not ideal. Assistive devices have the potential to provide relief to patients but are largely unexplored for ET. Furthermore, prior characterizations of essential tremor have focused on endpoint tremor and provide insufficient detail for designing such a device. We propose and demonstrate a novel method for characterizing essential tremor in the 7 proximal degrees of freedom (DOF) of the upper limb in various postures. In addition, we provide …

Hiv-1 Transgenic Rats Display Alterations In Immunophenotype And Cellular Responses Associated With Aging, Susan J. Abbondanzo Sep 2014

Hiv-1 Transgenic Rats Display Alterations In Immunophenotype And Cellular Responses Associated With Aging, Susan J. Abbondanzo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Advances in anti-retroviral therapy over the last two decades have allowed life expectancy in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus to approach that of the general population. The process of aging in mammalian species, including rats, results in changes with immune response, immunological phenotypes, and ultimately, increased susceptibility to many infectious diseases. In order to investigate the immunological pathologies associated with chronic HIV-1 disease, particularly in aged individuals, the HIV-1 transgenic (HIV-1Tg) rat model was utilized. Age matched animals were challenged using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to determine immunological modification of HIV-1Tg animals throughout the aging process. LPS is known to …

Fundamental Assumptions In Narrative Analysis: Mapping The Field, Dominique Robert, Shaul Shenhav Sep 2014

Fundamental Assumptions In Narrative Analysis: Mapping The Field, Dominique Robert, Shaul Shenhav

The Qualitative Report

The richness of narrative analysis resides in its unruly openness, but points of reference are needed to tame the variety in the field. This article suggests that researchers should grapple with two fundamental questions when conducting narrative analysis. The first pertains to the status attributed to narrative: it is defined as the very fabric of human existence or as one representational device among others? Emphasizing one answer over the other means mobilizing different theories of representation and therefore, suggesting different articulations between "narrative" and "reality." The second question refers to the perspective developed on narrative: Is it defined mostly as …

Occupational Complexity And Risk Of Parkinson's Disease, Elise G. Valdés, Ross Andel, Johanna Sieurin, Adina L. Feldman, Jerri D. Edwards, Niklas Långström, Margaret Gatz, Karin Wirdefeldt

Aging Studies Faculty Publications

Background: The etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear, and environmental risk-factors such as occupation have attracted interest.

Objective: The goal was to investigate occupational complexity in relation to PD.

Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study based on the Swedish Twin Registry that included 28,778 twins born between 1886 and 1950. We identified 433 PD cases during the study period. Data on occupation were collected from either the 1970 or 1980 Swedish census, and occupational complexity was assessed via a job exposure matrix. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses with age as the underlying time scale were used to assess …

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Time To Cure Of Incontinence Present At Nursing Home Admission, Donna Z. Bliss, Olga Gurvich, Kay Savik, Lynn Eberly, Susan Harms, Jean F. Wyman Sep 2014

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Time To Cure Of Incontinence Present At Nursing Home Admission, Donna Z. Bliss, Olga Gurvich, Kay Savik, Lynn Eberly, Susan Harms, Jean F. Wyman

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Abstract

As many as half of older people that are admitted to nursing homes (NHs) are incontinent of urine and/or feces. Not much is known about the rate of cure of incontinence present at NH admission, but available reports suggest the rate is low. There have been racial and ethnic disparities in incontinence treatment, but the role of disparities in the cure of incontinence is understudied. Using the Peters-Belson method and multilevel predictors, our findings showed that there were disparities in the time to cure of incontinence for Hispanic NH admissions. A significantly smaller proportion of older Hispanic admissions were …

Medication And Self-Efficacy Of Patients Living With Heart Failure: A Mixed-Methods Study, Janet G. Knecht Sep 2014

Medication And Self-Efficacy Of Patients Living With Heart Failure: A Mixed-Methods Study, Janet G. Knecht

Doctoral Dissertations

Although prescription medication adherence has been studied in the Heart Failure (HF) population, little attention has focused on the patient’s overall medication practices including over the counter medications and their confidence in following their prescribed therapeutic regime. The primary aim of this study is twofold: 1) Measure and gain a more complete understanding of HF medication management self-efficacy and 2). Quantify self-medication practices. Patients with HF live with the certainty that their quality of life depends on the proper management of multiple medications and innumerable therapeutic regimes. Failure to properly manage prescription medications increases the risk of exacerbation of HF …

Leadership And Loneliness, Ami Rokach Sep 2014

Leadership And Loneliness, Ami Rokach

International Journal of Leadership and Change

This article addresses leadership and loneliness and examines the interaction of these two constructs. The literature suggests that leaders (educational, state, business, and organizational) endure stress, alienation, loneliness, and emotional turmoil. These may lead to health problems and negatively affect social and familial relationships as well. The interaction of leadership and loneliness will be highlighted. Relevant literature will be reviewed on leadership and its characteristics and effects on those who succeed and get to the “top.” Loneliness will be examined and how it may affect people in general, and leaders in particular; the article will close with suggested strategies as …

Changes In Conflict Resolution Style Over Time: The Risk For Persons With Alzheimer’S Dementia, Gregory Paveza, Carla Vandeweerd, Lianne Estefan, Jaime Corvin Sep 2014

Changes In Conflict Resolution Style Over Time: The Risk For Persons With Alzheimer’S Dementia, Gregory Paveza, Carla Vandeweerd, Lianne Estefan, Jaime Corvin

Library Scholarship

Abstract Background: Elder mistreatment is a serious issue affecting between 300,000 and 800,000 older adults. Elder mistreatment has serious consequences for older adults and can include immunological dysfunction, increased mortality and emotional difficulties such as depression, feelings of inadequacy and self-contempt. Sub-groups such as persons with Alzheimer’s disease have heightened risk for elder mistreatment, but it is not clear whether this heightened risk represents life-long patterns of abuse between persons or whether they represent a change in conflict style over time as a result of changes associated with dementia. Methods: Data analyzed in this study were collected as part of …
