The Indie Lawyer Of The Future: How New Technology, Cultural Trends, And Market Forces Can Transform The Solo Practice Of Law, Lucille A. Jewel
The Indie Lawyer Of The Future: How New Technology, Cultural Trends, And Market Forces Can Transform The Solo Practice Of Law, Lucille A. Jewel
Scholarly Works
This article is about individual lawyers innovating in the practice of law. New technology, cultural trends, and market forces have the potential to awaken latent markets for one-to-one legal services grounded in the sharing economy, the commons, DIY businesses, and other similar endeavors. These forces might reshape the solo practice of law, which in turn might induce structural change in the legal system itself. Despite the mass commoditization of many law products, there is a potentially new market for craft-oriented lawyers who directly connect with clients.
When we connect the sharing economy and the cultural values that support it with …

In the last five years, three women have written biographies of Ernesto "Che" Guevara after decades of his life story being solidly in the hands of men. The question is: do women write biography differently?

Theban Walls In Homeric Epic, Corinne Ondine Pache
Theban Walls In Homeric Epic, Corinne Ondine Pache
Classical Studies Faculty Research
Throughout the Iliad, the Greeks at Troy often refer to the wars at Thebes in their speeches, and several important warriors fighting on the Greek side at Troy also fought at Thebes and are related to Theban heroes who besieged the Boeotian city a generation earlier. The Theban wars thus stand in the shadow of the story of war at Troy, another city surrounded by walls supposed to be impregnable. In the Odyssey, the Theban connections are less central, but nevertheless significant as one of our few sources concerning the building of the Theban walls. In this essay, …

Reflections On Literature : East And West, Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, Ronald K. Frank, Ying Wang, Hongling Lyu, Li Po
Global Asia Journal
This publication has three thematic essays written by professors from Pace University and Nanjing Normal University that discuss the similarities and differences between Chinese and western literature. Hongling Lyu identifies certain aesthetic differences between Chinese and western literature, and explains these divergences from a cross-cultural perspective. Li Po presents an overview of the aesthetics of classical literature. Ying Wang draws on her expertise in French literature and feminist studies to discuss the challenge of reading Chinese literature from the historical, cross-cultural, and feminist perspectives. These essays challenge us to go beyond the conventional East-and-West divide with its predictable polarities, and …

Women In The Crowd Of Corporate Directors: Following, Walking Alone, And Meaningfully Contributing, Joan Macleod Heminway
Women In The Crowd Of Corporate Directors: Following, Walking Alone, And Meaningfully Contributing, Joan Macleod Heminway
Scholarly Works
With the thought that new perspectives often can be helpful in addressing long-standing unresolved questions, this article approaches an analysis of women’s roles on corporate boards of directors from the standpoint of crowd theory. Crowd theory — in reality, a group of theories — explains the behavior of people in crowds. Specifically, this article describes theories of the crowd from social psychology and applies them to the literature on female corporate directors, looking at the effects on both women as crowd members and boards as decision-making crowds.
Unfortunately, while the crowd theory perspective provides some insights, they are not altogether …

Feasibility Of A Mangrove-Based Carbon Business In Makoba Bay, Unguja, Zanzibar, Janice Liang
Feasibility Of A Mangrove-Based Carbon Business In Makoba Bay, Unguja, Zanzibar, Janice Liang
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Mangrove ecosystems, along with other coastal vegetation, have tremendous potential to be abundant carbon sinks. With the prospect of carbon sequestered in coastal ecosystems starting to be explored in carbon credit markets, this study attempts to assess the feasibility of a mangrove-based carbon business in Makoba Bay, Unguja, Zanzibar. An aboveground carbon estimation demonstrates that the mangrove forest of Makoba Bay is a recovering ecosystem, but has the potential to be initiated into a program such as REDD+ in the future. Social surveys in both Makoba Bay and Chwaka Bay also indicate that a number of improvements would have to …

"Held Harmless:" Higher Education Funding And The 77th Session Of The Nevada Legislature, David F. Damore
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
The debate over higher education funding took center stage throughout the 77th session of the Nevada Legislature. Much of what transpired during 2013, however, was shaped by the work of the 2011–2012 SB374 Interim Committee to Study the Funding of Higher Education (SB374 Study Committee hereafter).

The Illusion Of Autonomy In Women's Medical Decision-Making, Jamie R. Abrams
The Illusion Of Autonomy In Women's Medical Decision-Making, Jamie R. Abrams
Florida State University Law Review
This Article considers why there is not more conflict between women and their doctors in obstetric decision-making. While patients in every other medical context have complete autonomy to refuse treatment against medical advice, elect high-risk courses of action, and prioritize their own interests above any other decision-making metric, childbirth is viewed anomalously because of the duty to the fetus that the state and the doctor owe at birth. Many feminist scholars have analyzed the complex resolution of these conflicts when they arise, particularly when the state threatens to intervene to override the birthing woman’s autonomy.
This Article instead considers the …

The exchange of carbon dioxide is a key measure of ecosystem metabolism and a critical intersection between the terrestrial biosphere and the Earth's climate. Despite the general agreement that the terrestrial ecosystems in North America provide a sizeable carbon sink, the size and distribution of the sink remain uncertain. We use a data-driven approach to upscale eddy covariance flux observations from towers to the continental scale by integrating flux observations, meteorology, stand age, aboveground biomass, and a proxy for canopy nitrogen concentrations from AmeriFlux and Fluxnet-Canada Research Network as well as a variety of satellite data streams from the MODIS …

Habitat Associations And Predictive Distribution Models Of Commercially Important Rockfish Species Along California's Central Coast, Heather Marie Bolton
Habitat Associations And Predictive Distribution Models Of Commercially Important Rockfish Species Along California's Central Coast, Heather Marie Bolton
SNS Master's Theses
While commercially important, the red rockfish complex, Vermilion Rockfish (Sebastes miniatus), Canary Rockfish (Sebastes pinniger) and Yelloweye Rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus), is emblematic of our limited knowledge of the distribution and habitat associations of ecologically and economically important fishes along California’s central coast. We used videographic and photographic imagery from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), coupled with high resolution multibeam derived maps of the seafloor to determine a) the fine scale habitat associations of red rockfishes along California’s central coast, and b) the potential distribution of small Canary Rockfish (10-40 centimeters TL) beyond surveyed areas using predictive species-specific distribution models. Across …

Evidence from sites in the lower Ulua valley of north-central Honduras, occupied between a.d. 500 and 1000, provides new insight into the connections between households, craft production, and the role of objects in maintaining social relations within and across households. Production of pottery vessels, figurines, and other items in a household context has been documented at several sites in the valley, including Cerro Palenque, Travesía, Campo Dos, and Campo Pineda. Differences in raw materials, in what was made, and in the size and design of firing facilities allow us to explore how crafting with clay created communities of practice made …
