Adapting To Change: The State Of Singapore Private Enterprise In China, Wilfred How, Caroline Yeoh
Adapting To Change: The State Of Singapore Private Enterprise In China, Wilfred How, Caroline Yeoh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
One of the most affluent and developed nations in its region, the city-state of Singapore relies largely on tapping global resources for economic growth, to ameliorate its tiny land area and accompanying lack of natural resources. Its current prominence is to a great degree owing to an early recognition of the need for such, and a well-documented stratagem of expanding its foreign direct investments (FDIs) as a means to stimulate economic development (Huff, 1995; Murray and Pereira, 1995) and strengthen the city-state’s ‘external economy’ - one which saw the island progress through a number of distinct phases of overseas investment …
Prosecutorial Discretion In Three Systems: Balancing Conflicting Goals And Providing Mechanisms For Control, Sara Sun Beale
Prosecutorial Discretion In Three Systems: Balancing Conflicting Goals And Providing Mechanisms For Control, Sara Sun Beale
Faculty Scholarship
In regulating the authority and discretion exercised by contemporary prosecutors, national systems balance a variety of goals, many of which are in tension or direct conflict. Forexample, making prosecutors politically or democratically accountable may conflict with theprinciple of prosecutorial neutrality, and the goal of efficiency may conflict with accuracy. National systems generally seek to foster equal treatment of defendants and respect for theirrights while also controlling or reducing crime and protecting the rights of victims. Systems thatrecognize prosecutorial discretion also seek to establish and implement policy decisions aboutthe best ways to address various social problems, priorities, and the allocation of resources. …

Looking Forward Through The Past. Identification Of Fifty Priority Research Questions In Palaeoecology., A Seddon, A Mackay, A Baker, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Priority question exercises are becoming an increasingly common tool to frame future agendas in conservation and ecological science. They are an effective way to identify research foci that advance the field and that also have high policy and conservation relevance. To date, there has been no coherent synthesis of key questions and priority research areas for palaeoecology, which combines biological, geochemical and molecular techniques in order to reconstruct past ecological and environmental systems on time-scales from decades to millions of years. We adapted a well-established methodology to identify 50 priority research questions in palaeoecology. Using a set of criteria designed …

Community Resilience, Transitional Corridors And Macro‐Scalar Lock‐In Effects, Ga Wilson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This article analyses interlinkages between community resilience, transitional corridors and macro-scalar lock-in effects, with specific emphasis on exogenous drivers. Transition theory is used as an approach to analyse resilience pathways. The article suggests that transitional corridors shape decision-making opportunities, which are ultimately mediated by the individual/household within a community and turned into action with tangible effects on resilience/vulnerability ‘on the ground’. The importance of macro-structural ‘lock-ins’ for understanding constraints and opportunities for raising community resilience is highlighted, including in particular political and policy-based decision-making pathways, macro-structural lock-ins, ideological lock-in effects and macro-economic lock-ins. The article concludes by arguing that transitional …

Parameterization Of Pharmaceutical Emissions And Removal Rates For Use In Uk Predictive Exposure Models: Steroid Estrogens As A Case Study., J. D. Heffley, S. D.W. Comber, B. W. Wheeler, C. H. Redshaw
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Newly available prescription data has been used along with census data to develop a localised method for predicting pharmaceutical concentrations in sewage influent and effluent for England, and applied to a case study: the steroid estrogens estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol in a selected catchment. The prescription data allows calculation of the mass consumed of synthetic estrogens, while use of highly localised census data improves predictions of naturally excreted estrogens by accounting for regional variations in population demographics. This serves two key purposes; to increase the accuracy of predictions in general, and to call attention to the need for more accurate …

Geography
High-resolution data collected from several programs have greatly increased the spatiotemporal resolution of pCO2(sw) data in the Bering Sea, and provided the first autumn and winter observations. Using data from 2008 to 2012, monthly climatologies of sea-air CO2 fluxes for the Bering Sea shelf area from April to December were calculated, and contributions of physical and biological processes to observed monthly sea-air pCO2 gradients (ΔpCO2) were investigated. Net efflux of CO2 was observed during November, December, and April, despite the impact of sea surface cooling on ΔpCO2. Although the Bering Sea was believed to be a moderate to strong atmospheric …
Heat And Drought Extremes Likely To Stress Ecosystem Productivity Equally Or More In A Warmer, Co2rich Future, Christopher A. Williams
Heat And Drought Extremes Likely To Stress Ecosystem Productivity Equally Or More In A Warmer, Co2rich Future, Christopher A. Williams
Geography
Reduced carbon uptake caused by recent heat and drought extremes raises concerns about biospheric feedbacks that amplify global warming. However, elevated carbon dioxide is expected to boost terrestrial ecosystem productivity over the 21st century, potentially alleviating some of the adverse carbon impacts of climate extremes. Using CMIP5 earth system model (ESM) results, Ian Williams and colleagues (2014 Environ. Res. Lett. 9 094011) find that the carbon impacts of heat and drought extremes in the future are likely to be similar to those seen in today's climate only shifted toward fluctuations around a higher average temperature. However, they also find that …

This paper uses transaction-level bank and credit card data to identify cryptocurrency investors and assess the impact of crypto wealth fuctuations on household consumption, as well as on investments in other assets. We fnd an $0.09 MPC from crypto gains, exceeding most previous estimates from unrealized equity gains. However, crypto investors are mostly also active equity investors, with many similar consumption patterns across gains from both asset classes. Households sell cryptocurrencies to increase discretionary and housing expenditures, with the latter causing local house price appreciation.
Using Stable Carbon Isotopes To Monitor For Potential Leakage Of Co2 At An Enhanced Coal Bed Methane Recovery Site In Marshall County, Wv, Bethany Meier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Enhanced coal bed methane recovery, also known as ECBM, is a carbon capture and storage method in which carbon dioxide is injected into depleted gas formations (specifically unmineable coal beds) to aid in coal bed methane recovery for industrial uses. Produced natural gas, shallow groundwater, and soil vadose gas samples were collected at the CONSOL Energy Inc. CO2 Sequestration Pilot Test Site located in Marshall County, WV to test the feasibility using carbon isotope signatures to detect potential leakage of CO2 into overlying formations. CO2 was injected into the Upper Freeport coal seam at a depth of 396 m below …

Albedo-Induced Radiative Forcing From Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks In Forests, South-Central Rocky Mountains: Magnitude, Persistence, And Relation To Outbreak Severity, M. Vanderhoof, C. A. Williams, Y. Shuai, D. Jarvis, Dominik Kulakowski, J. Masek
Geography
Mountain pine beetle (MPB) outbreaks in North America are widespread and have potentially persistent impacts on forest albedo and associated radiative forcing. This study utilized multiple data sets, both current and historical, within lodgepole pine stands in the south-central Rocky Mountains to quantify the full radiative forcing impact of outbreak events for decades after outbreak (0-60 yr) and the role of outbreak severity in determining that impact. Change in annual albedo and radiative forcing peaked at 14-20 yr post-outbreak (0.06 ± 0.006 and-0.8 ± 0.1 W m-2, respectively) and recovered to pre-outbreak levels by 30-40 yr post-outbreak. Change in albedo …
Written Corrective Feedback In The L2 Writing Classroom, Daniel Ducken
Written Corrective Feedback In The L2 Writing Classroom, Daniel Ducken
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
In 1996, a highly influential essay entitled “The Case against Grammar Correction in L2 Writing Class”, by John Truscott of National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, appeared in the June edition of Language Learning. In his essay, Truscott argued that empirical research, second language acquisition (SLA) theory, and practical concerns show written grammar correction (WCF) in the L2 writing classroom to be both “ineffective” and “harmful,” and that, therefore, it “should be abandoned” (p. 327). Since the time that Truscott originally expressed his concerns, much recent SLA theory and empirical research have indicated the potential efficacy of written corrective feedback …
Drug Supply Chain Security Act Of 2013 And It’S Computer System Implementation, Daryl Jones
Drug Supply Chain Security Act Of 2013 And It’S Computer System Implementation, Daryl Jones
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Since 1987, the federal government and state governments, have tried to combat counterfeit drugs from entering the United States and the states' pharmaceutical supply chain. The latest attempt to prevent counterfeit drugs from entering the state drug supply chain was the California E-Pedigree drug tracing program that was to be implemented by the end of 2017. The California E-Pedigree system uses GS1 PDMS tracing system as its guideline. Since all of the states use paper format pedigree systems, California would have been the first electronic pedigree system in the U.S.
However, on November 27, 2013, the President of the United …
Interdependence Of Value Chain Links: A Tale Of Three Cities, Muhammad Rizwan Saleem Sandhu, Muhammad Zaheer
Interdependence Of Value Chain Links: A Tale Of Three Cities, Muhammad Rizwan Saleem Sandhu, Muhammad Zaheer
Business Review
Most of the products in the world are produced and delivered by value chains which are the sum name of value adding activities performed in a sequence by different firms working in different countries. And in most of the cases value chain actors belong to both developed and developing world and adding different amount of value to value chain for producing and distributing products. Some value chains are driven by buyers and other work under the leadership of producers. Those who hold the intangibles gain more than those who hold tangibles in a value chain because intangibles .e.g. brands, designs …

Raising Soviets On Imported Goods. Socialist Realism In Estonian Secondary Education, Helen Saask
Raising Soviets On Imported Goods. Socialist Realism In Estonian Secondary Education, Helen Saask
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines how the political leadership of the Soviet Union tried to cultivate its desired values and principles among the people of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. It illuminates one aspect of all the ideologically charged activities, and looks at Soviet Estonian schools through the lens of compulsory reading --- how were socialist realist cultural goods used to promote Sovietization in Estonian secondary schools? Moreover, the study tries to evaluate to what degree the propagandistic intention was realized in literature lessons. Emphasis lies on exploring traces of the so-called 'double-thinking,' the notion that Estonians had the tendency to separate …

The release covered approximately nine miles and consisted of 40 tons of MIC, causing an estimated 2500 immediate fatalities and more than 10,000 deaths within a week of the event. While the Bhopal disaster captured global headlines and sparked transnational anti-toxics and environmental justice movements, the largest production and storage facility for MIC in the world was located in the Institute Industrial Park- just a few miles west of Charleston, …
Cultural Identity, Vocational Development, And The Meaning Of Work Among Appalachian Coal Miners: A Qualitative Study, Susan Chamberlain
Cultural Identity, Vocational Development, And The Meaning Of Work Among Appalachian Coal Miners: A Qualitative Study, Susan Chamberlain
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study I explore what coal mining means to underground miners in Appalachia, and how these meanings interact with participants' cultural and vocational identities. Using narrative data from eight underground coal miners, the study investigates the connections between cultural values, career, and personality. These connections are singularly intertwined in Appalachia, where economic and social landscapes have been heavily influenced by coal mining for over a century. The resulting relationships have blurred the lines of identity among career, family, and community. This qualitative study is based on data from semi-structured interviews; participant language was analyzed using grounded theory to create …

Stray Gas Occurrences In Groundwater In Randolph County, West Virginia, Usa, Lindsey J. Bowman
Stray Gas Occurrences In Groundwater In Randolph County, West Virginia, Usa, Lindsey J. Bowman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stray gas in groundwater is a rising health and safety concern and previous research has documented the enhancement of deep fluid migration to shallow aquifers by shale gas activity. However, stray gas can be generated or migrate naturally into shallow aquifers and more research is needed to establish baseline conditions prior to energy development in a region. A previous survey of groundwater in central West Virginia revealed that some high stray gas concentrations in groundwater wells could possibly be related to coal mining or oil and gas development (Mulder 2012). However, a few wells in Randolph County had high levels …
