Queer Alchemies: Radical Futurity In The Shell Of The Now, Elizabeth R. Canfield Jan 2014

Queer Alchemies: Radical Futurity In The Shell Of The Now, Elizabeth R. Canfield

Theses and Dissertations

This work operates at the intersection of academics, art, and activism. Within queer studies there is a tension between assimilation and liberation, sometimes situated as between pragmatism and utopia. This work re-examines Frankfurt school Marxist views of utopia through a queer theoretical lens in order to employ the radical imagination and queer futurity to examine new ways of practicing liberation. Drawing from theorists like Judith Butler, Jose Esteban Munoz, and Gloria Anzaldua, this work uses art (film, writing, zine-making, and sound) as a way to envision and enact a better world situated in the present.

Impacts Of Disturbance History On Forest Carbon Stocks And Fluxes: Merging Satellite Disturbance Mapping With Forest Inventory Data In A Carbon Cycle Model Framework, Christopher A. Williams, G. James Collatz, Jeffrey Masek, Chengquan Huang, Samuel N. Goward Jan 2014

Impacts Of Disturbance History On Forest Carbon Stocks And Fluxes: Merging Satellite Disturbance Mapping With Forest Inventory Data In A Carbon Cycle Model Framework, Christopher A. Williams, G. James Collatz, Jeffrey Masek, Chengquan Huang, Samuel N. Goward

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Forest carbon stocks and fluxes are highly dynamic following stand-clearing disturbances from severe fire and harvest and this presents a significant challenge for continental carbon budget assessments. In this work we use forest inventory data to parameterize a carbon cycle model to represent post-disturbance carbon trajectories of carbon pools and fluxes for specific forest types growing in high and low site productivity class settings. We then apply these trajectories to landscapes and regions based on forest age distributions derived from either the FIA data or from Landsat time series stacks (1985–2006) for 54 representative scenes throughout most of the conterminous …

The Surprising Role Of Legal Traditions In The Rise Of Abolitionism In Great Britain's Development, Robert Michael Buchsbaum Iii Jan 2014

The Surprising Role Of Legal Traditions In The Rise Of Abolitionism In Great Britain's Development, Robert Michael Buchsbaum Iii

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The abolition of British slavery in the 19th century raises the question of how the British achieved antislavery against colonial opposition. While historical theories have focused on economic, political and religious factors, no account of abolition is complete without a thorough investigation of the history of evolving British legal traditions. This thesis analyzed a number of British homeland court cases and antislavery laws. English legal traditions established principles of freedom long before abolition in Britain, and then upheld them in respect to blacks on British soil in the 18th century. On the other hand, these traditions exposed a void in …

Reversing The Flood Of Forced Displacement: Shedding Light On Important Determinants Of Return Migration, Prakash Adhikari Ph.D., Wendy L. Hansen Ph.D. Jan 2014

Reversing The Flood Of Forced Displacement: Shedding Light On Important Determinants Of Return Migration, Prakash Adhikari Ph.D., Wendy L. Hansen Ph.D.

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Most current research on forced migration focuses on explaining patterns of displacement during armed conflicts and the role that social networks play in pulling people away from conflict torn areas. But what happens to displaced persons after a conflict ends? While many of these individuals are able to resettle in the place to which they fled during conflict, some individuals return to their places of origin while others remain in limbo. This research seeks to better understand behavior after flight. Using a rational choice framework, we theorize that people are strategic in their calculations of the costs and benefits of …

Estimating U.S. Residential Demand For Fuelwood In The Presence Of Selectivity, Ryan Michael Daly Jan 2014

Estimating U.S. Residential Demand For Fuelwood In The Presence Of Selectivity, Ryan Michael Daly

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Residential energy consumers have options for home heating. With many applications, appliances, and fuel types, fuelwood used for heating faces stiff competition in modern society from other fuels. This study estimates demand for domestic fuelwood. It also examines whether evidence of bias exists from residential homes choosing to use fuelwood. The use of OLS as an estimator will yield biased results if such selectivity exists. Selectivity is addressed with a Heckman (1979) two-step procedure; bias in fuelwood demand estimation using OLS is reduced. Non-wood energy prices and income are major determinants of fuelwood demand. Geographical regions and urbanization confirm results …

The Religious Geography Of Town Of Greece V. Galloway, Paul Horwitz

Articles

Law and religion scholarship generally focuses on the temporal aspects of American religion and the law of the Religion Clauses not their spatial aspects This article argues that churchstate legal scholarship ought to take a spatial turn A substantial body of nonlegal scholarship has emphasized the influence of space and place on American religion and religious history The lens of geography observes a leading text provides an effective framework for analyzing the connection of religious belief to other spheres of thought and action at diverse scales Geography thus offers the potential for a richer understanding of American religious pluralism and …

Factors Associated With Collaboration In Disaster Response, Stanley Allan Carignan Jan 2014

Factors Associated With Collaboration In Disaster Response, Stanley Allan Carignan

Emergency Management

This paper explores the factors the literature suggests help organizations collaborate during disaster response. The nature of disasters requires that people and organizations collaborate; yet, collaboration has been frequently identified as a problem by policymakers and researchers alike. It would be of value to policymakers and researchers if there was an understanding of the factors that contribute to collaboration. The paper attempted to address this issue. It identifies four categories of variables that the literature suggests lead to inter-organizational collaboration including leadership, relationships, culture, and inter-dependency. The paper also suggests how understanding of these factors might be applied in practice, …

Formation And Lifespans Of Emergent Recovery Groups In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Samantha Lea Montano Jan 2014

Formation And Lifespans Of Emergent Recovery Groups In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Samantha Lea Montano

Emergency Management

Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, numerous groups emerged to address recovery related needs in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes. The phenomenon of emergent groups is widely noted in the disaster literature, but there has been little empirical research focusing on these groups. And, the existing literature discusses emergent groups primarily in the context of response. This study sought to explore the factors related to formation of emergent recovery groups (ERGs) and allow ERGs to have an extended lifespan. Data was gathered through in-depth interviews with founders of twenty ERGs that formed to work in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes. It …

A Study Of The Effect The Flipped Classroom Model On Student Self-Efficacy, Donald Christian Kenna Jan 2014

A Study Of The Effect The Flipped Classroom Model On Student Self-Efficacy, Donald Christian Kenna

Education

The learning model known as the flipped classroom is one of the developing ideas of educating students. Bergmann and Sams (2012) using a flipped classroom in 2007 when they recorded lecture for students to view at home and allowing students to work on “homework” in the classroom. This research was conducted to identify the effect of the flipped classroom on student self-efficacy and the difference in self-efficacy between genders using this model. This study was conducted with 22 physics students in two classes, a traditional and a flipped classroom. The student’s self-efficacy was scored with the Self-Efficacy Survey. The results …

The retail industry has evolved over time and has had constant change. Retailers adjust to accommodate with the changes, and those that are able to change with the times are more likely to be successful. The history of retail has adjusted with each major development of technology, from trains, cars, internet, to tablet computers today. Consumer behavior has also adjusted to the changes in retail and technology. This paper looks at the early history of retail to where we are today. Retailers that want to remain relevant in the future must adapt with the changes in technology and consumer behavior. …

Supporting Diverse Online Learners, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena Jan 2014

Supporting Diverse Online Learners, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Learner support is the critical link in online education. A learner support system is comprised of human and non-human resources that contribute to the learning process of an online course and should be designed as an integral part of the course. For example, if the online course requires students to access library resources to complete a research paper, then, easy access to library resources must be provided as part of the learner support system for that course. Learner support for online learners will differ based on the context, learner characteristics such as needs, expectations, prior learning experiences, etc., and the …

Economic Analyses Of Agricultural Land-Use Change And Agro-Ecosystem Services For Waterfowl In North Dakota, Thomas Adam Zimmermann Jan 2014

Economic Analyses Of Agricultural Land-Use Change And Agro-Ecosystem Services For Waterfowl In North Dakota, Thomas Adam Zimmermann

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Understanding the relationship between crop production and wildlife habitat in North Dakota - which contains a large portion of the Prairie Pothole Region - will be essential to the continuation of both in a region facing increasing pressure on its natural resources. This research aims to better understand the relationship through economic analysis of land-use change within the region. Utilizing yield, price and budget data for crops in North Dakota, cumulative distribution functions were constructed to compare crops between nine regions within North Dakota. This research will then be able to suggest regions where crops beneficial to wildlife habitat as …

The Unitary Executive And The Plural Judiciary: On The Potential Virtues Of Decentralized Judicial Power, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr. Jan 2014

The Unitary Executive And The Plural Judiciary: On The Potential Virtues Of Decentralized Judicial Power, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Articles

The federal judiciary features a highly decentralized system of courts. The Supreme Court of the United States reviews only a few dozen cases each year. Meanwhile, regional U.S. courts of appeals operate independently of each other; district courts further divide and separate the exercise of federal judicial power. The role of the state courts in enforcing federal law further subdivides responsibility for the adjudication of federal law claims. Indeed, the Office of Chief Justice itself incorporates and reflects this vesting of the judicial power of the United States exclusively in collegial institutions-literally in a multiplicity of hands-effectively precluding its unilateral …
