Social Studies In The Elementary Grades : A Child's Right, Aimée Mizuno

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This action research examined the use of two different types of social studies teaching and curricula. While one group of third grade students received a constructivist critical literacy type of instruction, another third grade class received textbook based instruction. The study compared student academic performance, attitudes and engagement between the two groups as well as the impact of the differing teaching methods on myself as the teacher. Data sources included student end of unit test scores, student questionnaires and focus groups, reflective teaching journals and teacher observations. The study findings include higher academic performance for the constructivist learning group, mixed …

Data Exploration Via Mind Maps In The Space Of Supply Chain Networks, Robert Hasty Jan 2014

Data Exploration Via Mind Maps In The Space Of Supply Chain Networks, Robert Hasty

Technical Library

Corporations associated with the supply chain industry depend heavily upon business intelligence to transform raw data into core metrics and key performance indicators. Because these types of measurements are critical in supporting strategic, day-to-day business decisions, both visibility and accessibility are of equal importance in order to facilitate effective management of transportation activity within the supply chain. Often times, analysts engaged in this industry have a need to regularly review these metrics not only individually but also simultaneously - and at various different hierarchical levels. It is through this type of analysis that analysts can begin to identify potential cause …

U.S. Airways Merger: A Strategic Variance Analysis Of Changes In Post-Merger Performance, Paul A. Mudde, Parvez R. Sopariwala Jan 2014

U.S. Airways Merger: A Strategic Variance Analysis Of Changes In Post-Merger Performance, Paul A. Mudde, Parvez R. Sopariwala

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

This case provides students the opportunity to apply strategic variance analysis (SVA) methodology in analyzing the performance changes realized in an airline merger. The U.S. Airways–America West merger provides an example of a complex, strategic action that simultaneously impacts firm size, unit pricing and costs, efficiency, and capacity for the combining airlines. This merger provides a rich example for the analysis since it combines U.S. Airways, a higher cost network airline that is geographically focused on the Eastern U.S., with America West, a low cost airline operating primarily along the Western U.S. The case includes merger and acquisition (M&A) theory …

The rapid expansion of human activities threatens ocean-wide biodiversity. Numerous marine animal populations have declined, yet it remains unclear whether these trends are symptomatic of a chronic accumulation of global marine extinction risk. We present the first systematic analysis of threat for a globally distributed lineage of 1,041 chondrichthyan fishes-sharks, rays, and chimaeras. We estimate that one-quarter are threatened according to IUCN Red List criteria due to overfishing (targeted and incidental). Large-bodied, shallow-water species are at greatest risk and five out of the seven most threatened families are rays. Overall chondrichthyan extinction risk is substantially higher than for most other …

Advancing The Empirical Research On Lobbying, John M. De Figueiredo, Brian Kelleher Richter

Faculty Scholarship

This essay identifies the empirical facts about lobbying which are generally agreed upon in the literature. It then discusses challenges to empirical research in lobbying and provides examples of empirical methods that can be employed to overcome these challenges—with an emphasis on statistical measurement, identification, and casual inference. The essay then discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and effective use of the main types of data available for research in lobbying. It closes by discussing a number of open questions for researchers in the field and avenues for future work to advance the empirical research in lobbying.

Turning The World Upside Down: How Frames Of Reference Shape Environmental Law, James Salzman, Martin Doyle Jan 2014

Turning The World Upside Down: How Frames Of Reference Shape Environmental Law, James Salzman, Martin Doyle

Models and representations help us understand complex phenomena. The Mercator map presents a familiar, two-dimensional view of our three-dimensional world, for example, but it can distort as much as it clarifies. In the natural sciences, too, there are very different ways of framing reality. The classic method developed by Leonard Euler measures a system from a fixed point. A competing method developed by Joseph Louis Lagrange measures from the perspective of a particle moving within the system. These Eulerian and Lagrangian methods of measurement dominate the physical sciences and provide different, though equally valid, measures of how the system operates. …

Historic Preservation Act Of 1966: Past, Present, Future, Nancy A. Finney Jan 2014

Historic Preservation Act Of 1966: Past, Present, Future, Nancy A. Finney

SPNHA Review

The Historic Preservation Act of 1966 has significantly impacted communities at local, regional, state and national levels. However, questions have been raised about historic preservation and its contribution to economic development. The intersection of sustainability issues such as adaptive reuse, air quality, “walkable-livable” neighborhoods, and fossil fuel consumption illustrate the increasing importance of historic preservation. Historic Preservation Tax Credits show high returns and are valuable tools for legislators and policy makers to utilize in collaboration with other community development programs. Research indicates that historic preservation can be utilized as a tool to elevate property values, restore pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, maintain community …

The Role Of School Leadership In Facilitating The Use Of Ict In Teaching And Learning : A Case Of Public Secondary School In Tanzania, Obed Kipelo

Master of Education

Literacy development is very important especially to young learners because it is not only for the purpose of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Literacy development rather is about development in many practices learners are exposed to, through the interaction with others and the environment in which they live. Therefore, school and home based environment are importance in promoting learners’ literacy development. Room to Read organization intervened in school settings by providing story books which are the useful resource in teaching process Literature appears to concentrate on the usefulness of using story books in literacy development to learners though very little …

Rationalizing Home And Community-Based Services Under Medicaid, Laura Hermer Jan 2014

Rationalizing Home And Community-Based Services Under Medicaid, Laura Hermer

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines efforts states are making to expand access to community-based services for elderly and disabled Medicaid beneficiaries and suggests several options that might improve such access nationally. Like much of Medicaid, Medicaid long term services and supports (LTSS) have developed through a complex process of accretion. Policymakers appear only rarely to have considered an overarching view of such services and the needs of those who require them. Rationalizing Medicaid LTSS will accordingly require not only additions but also substantial pruning, and may even warrant a reconsideration of who should have ultimate authority to develop and direct such services. …

Against The Profit Motive: The Salary Revolution In American Government, 1780–1940 (Book Review), Michael S. Ariens

Faculty Articles

In Against the Profit Motive, Nicholas R. Parrillo expertly explains how and why state and federal governments moved from paying their employees fees to paying them salaries. The book offers insights into the history of government finance and administrative law, shifting dramatically in time, subject matter, and geography. The book begins with a helpful fifty-page introductory summary and then is divided into two parts, each of which considers a type of activity that generated fees for government officers: facilitative payments and bounties. Further, Against the Profit Motive illustrates, in the disparate areas of criminal law enforcement, tax collection, and naval …

Spaces Of Nature: Producing Gilgit-Baltistan As The Eco-Body Of The Nation, Nosheen Ali

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

A while ago, when I was studying in Grade 8 at an English-medium school in Lahore, our class was divided up in four groups for a Geography project on Pakistan. The group of which I was a part had to make a sculptural map of Pakistan, demonstrating the diverse physical and social qualities of its landscape. And so we had set about carving our country with materials like styro-foam, cotton, cloth, and cardboard. In the final map that we made, the region of Gilgit-Baltistan - then the “Northern Areas” – had remained unlabeled and unpeopled, marked only with mountains made …

The Internet has become an essential tool for various life-related purposes, and it is an instrument necessary for the proper enjoyment of a series of rights-including the right to access knowledge and information and the right to communicate. This new paradigm also implies that all people should have access to the Internet at affordable conditions, and any restrictions should be strictly limited and proportionate. As a consequence, any regulatory and policy measures that affect the Internet and the content that flows over it should be consistent with basic rights and liberties of human beings. This Article intends to explore the …

Technological Literacy Courses In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Roger Skophammer, Philip A. Reed Jan 2014

Technological Literacy Courses In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Roger Skophammer, Philip A. Reed

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The goal of this study was to determine to what extent technological literacy courses were required in K-12 teacher education. A documents review of the appropriate course catalogs for initial teacher preparation was conducted. The documents review identified general education requirements and options for technological literacy courses, as well as requirements and options for these courses for English, social studies, mathematics, and science education majors. For this study, technological literacy was defined as "the ability to use, manage, assess, and understand technology" (ITEA, 2000/2002/2007, p. 9). This definition of literacy is broader than technology literacy associated with computer use and …

Documenting The Role Of Spirituality In Improving Healthcare Outcomes For Vulnerable Populations, Reaves Antonia Monk Jan 2014

Documenting The Role Of Spirituality In Improving Healthcare Outcomes For Vulnerable Populations, Reaves Antonia Monk

Dissertations

This ethnographic study documented the outcomes of the congregational nursing program in clinical settings where leaders and caregivers included consideration of patient spiritual needs to improve health outcomes and reduce care disparities. Spiritual leadership (SL) was my guiding theoretical orientation. Compared to motivation-based theories of leadership, SL is the most inclusive of leadership theories that encompass ethics, values and religion. My study addressed the following questions in congregational nursing health care programs: In what ways can the level of spiritual leadership be described and documented? How is spiritual leadership characterized and practiced? How can patient spiritual well-being be described and …

Climatology Of The African Easterly Jet And Subtropical Highs Over North Africa And Arabian Peninsula And A Numerical Case Study Of An Intense African Easterly Wave, James D. Spinks

Dissertations

North African climate is analyzed between 1979 and 2010 with an emphasis on August using the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) global dataset to investigate the effects of the subtropical anticyclones over North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula on the Africa easterly jet (AEJ). It was found that the AEJ encloses a core with a local wind maximum (LWM) in both West and East Africa, in which the west LWM core has a higher zonal wind speed. The strength of both cores is distinctly different by way of thermal wind balance. The variability of these synoptic weather …

Acrid Smoke And Horses' Breath: The Adaptability Of The British Cavalry, Fred R. Coventry Jan 2014

Acrid Smoke And Horses' Breath: The Adaptability Of The British Cavalry, Fred R. Coventry

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to re-examine the nineteenth century British cavalry as an organization, one which has generally been characterized as deeply conservative and resistant to change in organization, operations and tactics. While the charge of conservatism is true in terms of the command structure of the British cavalry, this research demonstrates that the British cavalry of the nineteenth century typically adapted itself to the conditions in which it found itself, adopting whatever methods, tactics and weapons best suited the campaigns in which it fought. Beginning with the Crimean War's cavalry actions as a baseline for what was …
