The Utility Of Vulnerability Maps And Gis In Groundwater Management: A Case Study, Muhterem Demi̇roğlu, John Dowd Jan 2014

The Utility Of Vulnerability Maps And Gis In Groundwater Management: A Case Study, Muhterem Demi̇roğlu, John Dowd

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Groundwater supplies are experiencing a critical shortage in arid and semiarid regions, as population growth, and hence demand, is not matched by the development of new water supplies. Groundwater is often the only water source in these areas, making the preservation of groundwater quality a critical issue. Powerful tools for groundwater protection are vulnerability maps, which can be used to identify protection zones. A number of factors influence aquifer vulnerability, including geology, geography, land use, and commercial and industrial development. These factors often display a complex spatial pattern easily addressed with GIS. Each factor is entered in the GIS as …

Responses Of Carbon Isotope Ratios Of C_3 Herbs To Humidity Index In Northern China, Xianzhao Liu, Qing Su, Chaokui Li, Yong Zhang, Qing Wang Jan 2014

Responses Of Carbon Isotope Ratios Of C_3 Herbs To Humidity Index In Northern China, Xianzhao Liu, Qing Su, Chaokui Li, Yong Zhang, Qing Wang

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Uncertainties would exist in the relationship between delta^{13}C values and environmental factors such as temperature, resulting in unreliable reconstruction of paleoclimates. It is therefore important to establish a rational relationship between plant delta^{13}C and a proxy for paleoclimate reconstruction that can comprehensively reflect temperature and precipitation. By measuring the delta^{13}C of a large number of C_3 herbaceous plants growing in different climate zones in northern China and collecting early reported delta^{13}C values of C_3 herbs in this study area, the spatial features of delta^{13}C values of C_3 herbs and their relationships with humidity index were analyzed. The delta^{13}C values of …

Ellenberg developed a system that assigns indicator scores for habitat characteristics of individual plant species. Swamp forests are highly diverse ecological communities and include different plant species, all of which have different ecological requirements. Ellenberg's indicator values (EIVs) were calculated for soil pH and nitrogen (N) concentration in some swamp forest species in the Central Black Sea region of Turkey. In this study, the EIVs for soil pH were usually similar in the swamp forest species studied, while some differences were found with respect to EIVs for soil nitrogen concentration. Tolerance values (TVs) of all of the studied species were …

Boys And Csa Prevention: Issues Surrounding Gender And Approaches For Prevention, Laura Scholes, Christian Jones, Michael Nagel

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Freda Briggs (2007), a leader in the field of child protection in Australia continues to raise concerns about the vulnerability and victimisation of boys that she believes is substantially under-recognised. She argues that boys have not been well supported by child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention programs with child protection curriculum not yet developed to meet the special needs of boys. Briggs (2007) advocates for school-based child protection programs that address issues relevant for boys. This paper responds to these concerns and explores some of the complexities inherent in issues associated with boys and CSA including boys’ perceptions of abuse, their …

The New Australian Curriculum, Teachers And Change Fatigue, Jessica Dilkes, Christine Cunningham, Jan Gray Jan 2014

The New Australian Curriculum, Teachers And Change Fatigue, Jessica Dilkes, Christine Cunningham, Jan Gray

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A new national curriculum has recently been implemented across Australia. This paper reports on a case study of a regional Western Australia government school as they re-wrote and taught the phase one learning areas: maths, English, science and HASS. Results showed what it is like to work in an environment where continual change is not only expected, but also seen as best practice. Cynical, realistic and even enthusiastic teachers suffer change fatigue after years of rapid and continual curriculum change.

The research traces back the reasons why teacher change fatigue might occur using Intuitive Inquiry (Anderson & Braud, 2011) as …

Supporting The Transference Of Knowledge About Language Within Teacher Education Programs, Lisl Fenwick, Michele Endicott, Marie Quinn, Sally Humphrey Jan 2014

Supporting The Transference Of Knowledge About Language Within Teacher Education Programs, Lisl Fenwick, Michele Endicott, Marie Quinn, Sally Humphrey

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teacher education is effective when pre-service teachers are able to transfer knowledge from content areas to practice. This study investigates the extent to which curriculum and assessment designs, along with teaching practices, supported pre-service teachers to transfer knowledge gained about language from a first-year course into a second-year course on planning for effective learning in diverse contexts. Questionnaires and discourse analysis of assessment tasks provided insight into the extent to which the strategies designed to support transference succeeded. The findings indicate that transference of language knowledge occurs when this goal permeates curriculum and assessment design, as well as teaching practices.

Regional Distribution Shifts Help Explain Local Changes In Wintering Raptor Abundance: Implications For Interpreting Population Trends, Neil Paprocki, Julie A. Heath, Shawn J. Novak Jan 2014

Regional Distribution Shifts Help Explain Local Changes In Wintering Raptor Abundance: Implications For Interpreting Population Trends, Neil Paprocki, Julie A. Heath, Shawn J. Novak

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies of multiple taxa across broad-scales suggest that species distributions are shifting poleward in response to global climate change. Recognizing the influence of distribution shifts on population indices will be an important part of interpreting trends within management units because current practice often assumes that changes in local populations reflect local habitat conditions. However, the individual- and population-level processes that drive distribution shifts may occur across a large, regional scale and have little to do with the habitats within the management unit. We examined the latitudinal center of abundance for the winter distributions of six western North America raptor species …

Stop-Time: Present, Past, And Future Walk Into A Bar…. It’S Tense, John Paine Jan 2014

Stop-Time: Present, Past, And Future Walk Into A Bar…. It’S Tense, John Paine

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

I will discuss primarily how three Western thinkers and writers approach human time. St. Augustine articulates the plight of human beings caught in ever-fleeing time in Book XI of his Confessions. J.-J. Rousseau in his Reveries finds an answer to the fleeting nature of time in reaching moments of being when he is entirely present to himself. Marcel Proust “finds time again” in bringing into focus present and past time in his novel In Search of Lost Time. Interspersed with discussion of these works will be apposite examples of how other poets and thinkers have dealt with the human condition …

That Time Of Which We Know Nothing, Maggie P. Monteverde Jan 2014

That Time Of Which We Know Nothing, Maggie P. Monteverde

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

The subject of time, our differing perceptions, experiences, and expressions of it, has interested and at times obsessed me for over forty years now, and I realize that the topics being pursued by many of our speakers not surprisingly resonate with many of my own questions and preoccupations with this subject. Where, then, with such a body of memory and thought, to begin this essay intended to situate those issues in literature and language?

Calculating Actual Crop Evapotranspiration Under Soil Water Stress Conditions With Appropriate Numerical Methods And Time Step., Soni Yatheendradas, Balachandrudu Narapusetty, Christa Peters-Lidard, Christopher Funk, James Verdin

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

A previous study analyzed errors in the numerical calculation of actual crop evapotranspiration (ETa) under soil water stress. Assuming no irrigation or precipitation, it constructed equations for ETa over limited soil-water ranges in a root zone drying out due to evapotranspiration. It then used a single crop-soil composite to provide recommendations about the appropriate usage of numerical methods under different values of the time step and the maximum crop evapotranspiration (ETc). This comment reformulates those ETa equations for applicability over the full range of soil water values, revealing a dependence of the relative error in numerical ETa on the initial …

Temporal Ecology In The Anthropocene, E. M. Wolkovich, B. I. Cook, K. K. Mclauchlan, T. J. Davies Jan 2014

Temporal Ecology In The Anthropocene, E. M. Wolkovich, B. I. Cook, K. K. Mclauchlan, T. J. Davies

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Two fundamental axes – space and time – shape ecological systems. Over the last 30 years spatial ecology has developed as an integrative, multidisciplinary science that has improved our understanding of the ecological consequences of habitat fragmentation and loss. We argue that accelerating climate change – the effective manipulation of time by humans – has generated a current need to build an equivalent framework for temporal ecology. Climate change has at once pressed ecologists to understand and predict ecological dynamics in non-stationary environments, while also challenged fundamental assumptions of many concepts, models and approaches. However, similarities between space and time, …

Fishing For Resilience, Kevin L. Pope, Craig R. Allen, David G. Angeler Jan 2014

Fishing For Resilience, Kevin L. Pope, Craig R. Allen, David G. Angeler

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Management approaches that focus on social–ecological systems—systems comprised of ecosystems, landscapes, and humans—are needed to secure the sustainability of inland recreational fisheries without jeopardizing the integrity of the underlying social and ecological components. Resilience management can be useful because it focuses on providing recreational capacity for fishermen under a variety of conditions while assuring that the social– ecological system is not pushed to a critical threshold that would result in a new, undesired system regime. Resilience management is based on a system perspective that accounts for the possible regimes a system could manifest. It aims to enhance system properties that …

Misreading And Mobility In Constitutional Texts: A Nineteenth Century Case, Iza Hussin Jan 2014

Misreading And Mobility In Constitutional Texts: A Nineteenth Century Case, Iza Hussin

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article explores the case of the adoption of Southeast Asia's first constitution (Johor, 1895) to articulate a fundamental problem of translation-the ambiguity and multiplicity of law's language. Closer attention to this problem helps raise a number of possibilities for rethinking the relationship between law, language, and mobility: firstly, polyphony, dissonance, and divergence in law's language reveals a plethora of political possibilities, audiences, and actors in the making of law; secondly, these ambiguities and multiplicities are integral to law's mobility; thirdly, rather than transmissions of law from center to periphery, law moves in circulations that are iterative, contingent, and patterned. …

Institutionalized Cooperation And Resilience In Transboundary Freshwater Allocation, Olivia Odom Green, Charles Perrings Jan 2014

Institutionalized Cooperation And Resilience In Transboundary Freshwater Allocation, Olivia Odom Green, Charles Perrings

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Of all the expected impacts of climate change, the most significant is likely to be the change in the availability of freshwater associated with changing precipitation. The most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report notes that all regions of the world are expected to experience a net negative impact on water resources and freshwater ecosystems. The impact is likely to be highly variable, with some regions experiencing declining runoff and others experiencing increasing runoff. Many areas are projected to experience increased variability in precipitation and hence. in water supply, water quality, and flood risks (IPCC 2007). Individual countries …
