Do Artificial Riffles Enhance Nutrient Retention In Restored Streams?, Adam Thomas Hughes Jan 2014

Do Artificial Riffles Enhance Nutrient Retention In Restored Streams?, Adam Thomas Hughes

Masters Theses

Kickapoo Creek, a tributary of the Embarrass River in Central Illinois, has undergone a stream restoration that included the construction of two artificial riffles. These structures were designed to slow flood waters, increase channel and substrate stability, and increase habitat heterogeneity in a stream impacted by erosion and sediment deposition. They may also provide stable substrates that affect the algal community, leading to shifts in algal community composition, increases in the biomass of primary producers, and subsequent increases in nutrient retention. I explored the effects of the restoration on instream nutrient retention by measuring and comparing phosphate uptake lengths, velocities, …

Major Structural Relationships: A Survey Of Origins, Development, Classifications, And Assessment, Fredrick J. Long Jan 2014

Major Structural Relationships: A Survey Of Origins, Development, Classifications, And Assessment, Fredrick J. Long

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

A central feature to Inductive Bible Study (IBS) are Major Structural Relationships (MSRs), despite some variation in the number, identification, descriptions, and organization of them. These relationships are endemic to human communication; hence, their description is vital for accurate and holistic observation of biblical materials. The origin of MSRs is traceable to the 19th century art instruction of John Ruskin. He himself was aware that his insights into composition extended beyond artistic to musical and literary composition. Practitioners of IBS have continued to develop and describe rigorously methodologies surrounding the identification of MSRs, especially at Asbury Theological Seminary. A survey …

Sociorhetorical Interpretation (Sri) And Inductive Bible Study (Ibs): Outlines Of Mark, The Lord’S Prayer, And The Son’S Prayer In John 17, Vernon K. Robbins Jan 2014

Sociorhetorical Interpretation (Sri) And Inductive Bible Study (Ibs): Outlines Of Mark, The Lord’S Prayer, And The Son’S Prayer In John 17, Vernon K. Robbins

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

There are many things in common between Inductive Bible Study (IBS) and Sociorhetorical Interpretation (SRI) as I practice it in the context of the Rhetoric of Religious Antiquity (RRA) project.1 Many of the similarities are a result of detailed focus on texts. The multiple strategies of interpreting both the inner texture and the intertexture of texts in SRI share much in common with IBS. As a result, many of the strategies of analysis and interpretation in the sections on “Observing and Asking” and “Answering or Interpreting”2 in particular are highly congenial with or naturally integral to SRI.

Relative Contributions Of Ocean Mass And Deep Steric Changes To Sea Level Rise Between 1993 And 2013, Sarah G. Purkey, Gregory C. Johnson, Don P. Chambers Jan 2014

Relative Contributions Of Ocean Mass And Deep Steric Changes To Sea Level Rise Between 1993 And 2013, Sarah G. Purkey, Gregory C. Johnson, Don P. Chambers

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Regional and global trends of Sea Level Rise (SLR) owing to mass addition centered between 1996 and 2006 are assessed through a full-depth SLR budget using full-depth in situ ocean data and satellite altimetry. These rates are compared to regional and global trends in ocean mass addition estimated directly using data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) from 2003 to 2013. Despite the two independent methods covering different time periods with differing spatial and temporal resolution, they both capture the same large-scale mass addition trend patterns including higher rates of mass addition in the North Pacific, South Atlantic, …

Dispatch, Delivery, And Location Logistics For The Aeromedical Evacuation Of Time-Sensitive Military Casualties Under Uncertainty, Benjamin Grannan Jan 2014

Dispatch, Delivery, And Location Logistics For The Aeromedical Evacuation Of Time-Sensitive Military Casualties Under Uncertainty, Benjamin Grannan

Theses and Dissertations

Effective aeromedical evacuation of casualties is one of the most important problems in military medical systems because high-priority casualties will not survive without timely medical care. The decision making process for aeromedical evacuation consists of the following components: (1) identifying which aeromedical evacuation asset (see figure 1) to dispatch to the casualty, (2) locating aeromedical evacuation assets strategically in anticipation of incoming demand, and (3) deciding which medical treatment facility to transport the casualty. These decisions are further complicated because prioritization of casualties is based on severity of injury while aeromedical evacuation assets and medical treatment facilities operate with varying …

The 2014 Nebraska Metro Poll continues an on‐going effort to understand the perceptions and concerns of urban residents. The Metro Poll expands upon the efforts of the Omaha Conditions Survey conducted by the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) periodically since 1990 to now include survey responses from the seven counties that comprise both the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas. With the knowledge and insights gained from surveying local residents, leaders and decision‐makers can be better informed on the views and priorities that the public shares.

From Reaction To Agency: A 'Subaltern' Response To William Twining's Globalisation And Legal Scholarship, Basil E. Ugochukwu Jan 2014

From Reaction To Agency: A 'Subaltern' Response To William Twining's Globalisation And Legal Scholarship, Basil E. Ugochukwu

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

In this essay, it is contended that by welcoming a cosmopolitan discipline of law that encompasses 'all levels of social relations and legal orderings' (both dominant and peripheral) as well as by suggesting that the intellectual heritage of Western jurisprudence be adapted 'to the new predicament of global law', William Twining offers a platform to the world’s marginalized legal systems and formations to assert their relevance in the advancement of legal theory. In developing this argument, I will first examine what opportunities exist within Twining’s theorizing to reclaim and de-marginalize non-Western understandings of the law and its social value within …

The Incurable Constitutional Itch: Transnational Private Regulatory Governance And The Woes Of Legitimacy, Peer C. Zumbansen Jan 2014

The Incurable Constitutional Itch: Transnational Private Regulatory Governance And The Woes Of Legitimacy, Peer C. Zumbansen

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

Transnational private regulatory governance in a host of areas from food and product safety, aviation security, accounting, corporate and labor standards, as well as forestry and marine stewardship has long attracted the attention of those with concern for the public interest. The chapter recognizes these concerns, which are usually expressed in terms of a wide-ranging legitimacy deficit of private governance regimes. At the same time, I contend that there is no easy fix in response to regulatory developments that have their origin in nation-state transformation and in a functionally differentiated proliferation of global societal activity. I provide a brief account …

The Virtues Of Law In The Politics Of Religious Freedom, Benjamin L. Berger Jan 2014

The Virtues Of Law In The Politics Of Religious Freedom, Benjamin L. Berger

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

The moral force and capacity for inspiration of both religion and politics alike arise in part from the sense that they authentically map the world as we find it, yielding claims about how it should be. This paper asks what role we might imagine for law in this “hyper-real” world of religion and politics, arguing that law can display distinctive virtues linked to its capacity for strategic agnosticism about the real. Applying Sunstein’s idea of “incompletely theorized agreements” to the politics of religious freedom, the paper examines the role of law as a tool of adhesion in two very different …

Access To Justice And Corporate Accountability: A Legal Case Study Of Hudbay In Guatemala, Valerie Crystal, Shin Imai, Bernadette Maheandiran Jan 2014

Access To Justice And Corporate Accountability: A Legal Case Study Of Hudbay In Guatemala, Valerie Crystal, Shin Imai, Bernadette Maheandiran

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

This case study looks at the avenues open for addressing serious allegations of murder, rape and assault brought by indigenous Guatemalans against a Canadian mining company. While first generation law and development reforms have facilitated foreign mining in Guatemala, “second generation” reforms have not yet provided a meaningful way of addressing conflicts arising from the development projects. The judicial mechanisms available in Guatemala are difficult to access and suffer from problems of corruption and intimidation. The corporate social responsibility mechanisms applicable to the mining company cannot provide enforceable orders. Canadian courts have been reluctant to permit law suits against Canadian …

No Lawyer For A Hundred Miles? Mapping The New Geography Of Access Of Justice In Canada, Jamie Baxter, Albert Yoon Jan 2014

No Lawyer For A Hundred Miles? Mapping The New Geography Of Access Of Justice In Canada, Jamie Baxter, Albert Yoon

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

Recent concerns about the geography of access to justice in Canada have focused on the dwindling number of lawyers in rural and remote areas, raising anxieties about the profession’s inability to meet current and future demands for localized legal services. These concerns have motivated a range of policy responses that aim to improve the education, training, recruitment and retention of practitioners in underserved areas. We surveyed lawyers in Ontario to better understand their physical proximity to clients and how, if at all, that proximity promotes access to justice. We find that lawyers' scope of practice varies based on a number …

What Is Access To Justice?, Trevor C. W. Farrow Jan 2014

What Is Access To Justice?, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

Access to justice is the most pressing justice issue today. It has recently and very quickly become the major focus of attention of essentially all stakeholders in the legal community – governments, regulators, judges, bar associations, researchers and educators. And it needs also to become an increasing topic of attention for those who use the system – the public. But with all of this new attention, do we really know what we are talking about? What does the phrase "access to justice" mean, particularly from the perspective of the public? Primarily through a series of qualitative interviews, this study looks …

Causing A Racket: Unpacking The Elements Of Cultural Capital In An Assessment Of Urban Noise Control, Live Music, And The Quiet Enjoyment Of Private Property, Sara Ross Jan 2014

Causing A Racket: Unpacking The Elements Of Cultural Capital In An Assessment Of Urban Noise Control, Live Music, And The Quiet Enjoyment Of Private Property, Sara Ross

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

I examine the tension between and the treatment of the elements of cultural capital within dynamic mixed-use spaces, and posit that Canada's current noise control and noise pollution legislation, by-laws, and case law demonstrate a hierarchical protection framework placing greater importance on the "quiet enjoyment of private property" over live music culture, where performances are often the subject of noise complaints. While the elements of cultural capital valued by those who favour the value of quiet enjoyment of private property is well represented throughout legislation, by-laws, and case law, the elements of cultural capital valued by those who favour the …

Corporate Reporting Under The U.S. Securities And Exchange Commission's Diversity Disclosure Rule: A Mixed-Methods Content Analysis, Aaron A. Dhir Jan 2014

Corporate Reporting Under The U.S. Securities And Exchange Commission's Diversity Disclosure Rule: A Mixed-Methods Content Analysis, Aaron A. Dhir

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

This is chapter 6 of Challenging Boardroom Homogeneity: Corporate Law, Governance, and Diversity (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming in 2015). In this chapter I investigate the disclosure-based approach to addressing diversity in corporate governance. In 2009, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission adopted a rule requiring publicly traded firms to report on whether they consider diversity in identifying director nominees and, if so, how. The rule also requires firms that have adopted a diversity policy to describe how they implement the policy and assess its effectiveness. The rule does not define “diversity,” however, leaving it to corporations to give this …

Gender Diversity In The Patent Bar, 14 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 67 (2014), Saurabh Vishnubhakat

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

This article describes the state of gender diversity across technology and geography within the U.S. patent bar. The findings rely on a new gender-matched dataset, the first public dataset of its kind, not only of all attorneys and agents registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, but also of attorneys and agents on patents granted by the USPTO. To enable follow-on research, the article describes all data and methodology and offers suggestions for refinement. This study is timely in view of renewed interest about the participation of women in the U.S. innovation ecosystem, notably the provision …

Prevalence Of Tuberculosis Symptoms And Latent Tuberculosis Infection Among Prisoners In Northeastern Malaysia, Benjamin Margolis Jan 2014

Prevalence Of Tuberculosis Symptoms And Latent Tuberculosis Infection Among Prisoners In Northeastern Malaysia, Benjamin Margolis

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a known public health threat to prison systems due to poor hygiene, crowded living conditions, poor health of inmates, and poor prison healthcare systems. The large population of HIV-infected people living in prisons is especially susceptible to increased TB transmission and higher mortality. In Northeastern Malaysia, there is no screening for active or latent TB infection (LTBI) in the prison system.

Aims and Hypothesis: This study serves to measure the prevalence and correlates of LTBI and active TB symptoms in HIV-infected and non-HIV-infected prisoners in Northeastern Malaysia. Given the host of factors that contribute to TB …

Science Fairs And Science Olympiad : Influence On Student Science Inquiry Learning And Attitudes Toward Stem Careers And Coursework, Kathleen M. Schmidt

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Thousands of middle school students participate in science competitions such as science fairs and Science Olympiad yearly, but little is known about the effects of their participation on their attitudes toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) coursework and careers. Even less is known about whether they increase students' understanding of the practices of scientific inquiry. In this study, 86 seventh-grade students from eight schools who participated in either science fair or Science Olympiad competitions were assessed regarding their attitudes toward STEM coursework and careers and the extent of their science inquiry skills. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and …

Outcomes Assessment Of An Outdoor Orientation Program Through Means-End Theory, Kristofer James Cortez Jan 2014

Outcomes Assessment Of An Outdoor Orientation Program Through Means-End Theory, Kristofer James Cortez

Masters Theses

There is a lack of research investigating the effectiveness of outdoor orientation programs. Specifically, there is an absence of research examining what program elements contribute to student development and how those elements support that growth. Programs have relied on anecdotal evidence of outcome achievement but these indicators do not sufficiently identify the processes that specifically influence participant development. This study uses means-end theory to assess an outdoor orientation program at a large public university. Participant interviews identified meaningful features of their program experience and explained what outcomes were achieved as a result of those specific features. Laddering and means-end analysis …

Media Framing, Proximity And Spheres: The Media Account Before And After The August 21, 2013 Syrian Chemical Attack, Jeremy D. Crisp

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The conflict in Syria over the past two years came to the forefront of international policy, and media reporting, following the August 21, 2013, chemical attack within the country which left more than 1,400 civilians dead. The United States administration was thrust into a position to respond in some fashion to those attacks. President Barack Obama and some U.S. policy makers called for limited military intervention. Others officials called for non-intervention. Diplomacy ultimately prevailed. How the media framed the conflict before and after the attack is the crux of this research, as media framing can play a role in how …

Communication Apprehension And Its Effects On Online Readiness Skills, Lindsay Kristine Miller Jan 2014

Communication Apprehension And Its Effects On Online Readiness Skills, Lindsay Kristine Miller

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This project developed an assessment instrument testing student communication apprehension in the online environment. The instrument assessed communication apprehension that might be linked to online written communication, computer, and self-regulated learning readiness skills. The development of the instrument is informed by recent scholarship, as well as qualitative research on a community college campus, which sought to investigate and surface the communication apprehension that online students negotiate. This qualitative project utilized two research methods: focus group research of ten online students (five females and five males ranging in age from 18 to 60) and field research interviews of four online teachers …
