A Defense Of Japanese Sovereignty Over The Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, Ryan M. Scoville Jan 2014

A Defense Of Japanese Sovereignty Over The Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, Ryan M. Scoville

Faculty Publications

Legal analyses on the sovereignty dispute over the Senkaku/ Diaoyu Islands have been unfavorable to Japan. The literature is populated primarily with works by commentators who argue in favor of the Chinese claim, and by others who conclude that the applicable law is simply too indeterminate to support either party. Analyses favoring Japan are rare and underdeveloped. This is a surprising state of affairs, given that Japan has the better argument. The purpose of this paper is to explain why.

El Globo Aerostático Y La Máquina De Mirar. Cultura Visual Y Guerra En El Siglo Xix Paraguayo, Sebastián Díaz-Duhalde

Reciprocal Development Of The Lived City And The Popular Press (1833-1868), Catherine Sundt Jan 2014

Reciprocal Development Of The Lived City And The Popular Press (1833-1868), Catherine Sundt

Decimonónica

Henri Lefebvre defines the writing of a city as the daily text that is “inscribed and prescribed on its walls, in the layout of places and their linkages, in brief, the use of time in the city by its inhabitants” (115). It is a language of connotations and signs, a secondary system that inscribes itself upon the urban space by means of “stories and urban legends that haunt urban space like superfluous or additional inhabitants” (De Certeau 106). Imagined cities—Dickens’s London, Balzac’s Paris, Galdós’s Madrid—exist separately from the physical city, but are discursively linked with the lived city that the …

Volume 5: Genealogy And Knowledge In Muslim Societies : Understanding The Past, Sarah Bowen Savant, Helena De Felipe Jan 2014

Volume 5: Genealogy And Knowledge In Muslim Societies : Understanding The Past, Sarah Bowen Savant, Helena De Felipe

Exploring Muslim Contexts

Genealogy is one of the most important and authoritative organising principles of Muslim societies.

From the Prophet’s day to the present, ideas about kinship and descent have shaped tribal, ethnic, sectarian and other identities. An understanding of genealogy is therefore vital to our understanding of Muslim societies, particularly with regard to the generation, preservation and manipulation of genealogical knowledge.

This book addresses the subject through a range of case studies that link genealogical knowledge to the particular circumstances in which it was created, circulated and promoted. They stress the malleability of kinship and memory, and the interests this malleability served.

Cities As Built And Lived Environments: Scholarship From Muslim Contexts, 1875 To 2011, Aptin Khanbaghi

Muslim Civilisations Abstracts

The rich diversity of the Muslim world is strikingly expressed through its myriad of cities.

Volume 3 of the MCA series presents abstracts of scholarship examining socio-cultural and cosmopolitan processes with aspects of material culture in contemporary and historic urban contexts. The abstracts, in English, Arabic and Turkish, examine cities as built (architecture and urban infrastructure) and lived (urban social life and culture) environments.

Crucial topics such as urban growth are included in abstracts about infrastructural and environmental issues, as well as migration from rural areas to cities.

The topics related to cities and urban life which are discussed in …

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) harnessed the power of numbers to focus the world's attention on some of the most pressing development challenges. Numbers are perceived to be professional, rational, credible, and neutral. The MDGs embody both the promise and the peril of development approaches that view measurable outcomes as the most certain path to progress for all. They focus on quantifiable progress in access to basic social services and goods, using only well-known indicators, metrics, and established data sets for monitoring. Further, they focus on aggregate progress, failing-except in relation to a specific gender equality goal-to capture the dimension …

Coastal Geology And Recent Origins For Sand Point, Lake Superior, Timothy G. Fisher, David E. Krantz, Mario R. Castaneda, Walter L. Loope, Harry M. Jol, Ronald J. Goble, Melinda C. Higley, Samantha Dewald, Paul R. Hanson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sand Point is a small cuspate foreland located along the southeastern shore of Lake Superior within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan. Park managers’ concerns for the integrity of historic buildings at the northern periphery of the point during the rising lake levels in the mid-1980s greatly elevated the priority of research into the geomorphic history and age of Sand Point. To pursue this priority, we recovered sediment cores from four ponds on Sand Point, assessed subsurface stratigraphy onshore and offshore using geophysical techniques, and interpreted the chronology of events using radiocarbon and luminescence dating. Sand Point formed at …

Water Quantity And Quality In The Columbia Basin Trust Region, Janice Brahney

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

This report collects the documents generated as part of a two year effort to catalogue the variety of water quality and quantity data that has been collected in the Columbia Basin Trust region of British Columbia. Through the cataloguing effort, a number of important data and knowledge gaps were identified and specific recommendations developed. The available water quantity and climate data was then used in a number of analyses focused on understanding the relationship between changing climate conditions and stream discharges.

One overall finding is that there is a large variety of data collected and held by various different entities. …

The Origin Of Multiple Sclerosis Revisited: The Case For A Soluble Toxin, Kareem Rashid Rumah Jan 2014

The Origin Of Multiple Sclerosis Revisited: The Case For A Soluble Toxin, Kareem Rashid Rumah

Student Theses and Dissertations

After nearly two hundred years of scientific inquiry, the cause of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) remains unknown. Although generally considered an autoimmune disease, recent pathological findings have challenged the longstanding autoimmune view of MS. Indeed, lesions that are just hours past their initial onset display evidence of cellular degeneration in the absence of an inflammatory infiltrate. This seminal finding begs the fundamental question, if immune cells do not participate in early tissue damage in MS, what is the mysterious triggering agent? In the first half of this thesis, I will propose that a soluble bacterial toxin, Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin (ETX), …

When Enough Is Enough: Location Tracking, Machine Learning And The Mosaic Theory, Renee Mcdonald Hutchins, Steve Bellovin, Tony Jebara, Sebastian Zimmeck

Journal Articles

Since 1967, when it decided Katz v. United States, the Supreme Court has tied the right to be free of unwanted government scrutiny to the concept of reasonable expectations of privacy.1 An evaluation of reasonable expectations depends, among other factors, upon an assessment of the intrusiveness of government action. When making such assessment historically the Court considered police conduct with clear temporal, geographic, or substantive limits. However, in an era where new technologies permit the storage and compilation of vast amounts of personal data, things are becoming more complicated. A school of thought known as “mosaic theory” has stepped into …

Weather, Climate, And The Economy: Explaining Risk Perceptions Of Global Warming, 2001-10, Wanyun Shao, Barry D. Keim, James C. Garand, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Sociology

Abstract

Two series of national survey datasets (2001-10), supplemented with monthly temperature and precipitation data and unemployment data, are used to examine how weather and climate, economic performance, and individuals' sociodemographic backgrounds and political orientations affect public perceptions of global warming. Consistent with previous studies, political orientations play a key rolein determining public perceptions of global warming. Democrats and liberals are more likely than Republicans and conservatives to see global warming as an immediate and serious problem. Sociodemographic characteristics are also shown to be significant factors, with young people, women, and racial minorities likely to show higher concern about global …

Neighbourhood Ethnic Composition And Employment Effects On Immigrant Incomes, Roger Andersson, Sako Musterd, George C. Galster Jan 2014

Neighbourhood Ethnic Composition And Employment Effects On Immigrant Incomes, Roger Andersson, Sako Musterd, George C. Galster

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Currently in many Western countries there are concerns that clustering of ethnic minorities in certain parts of cities will negatively affect integration processes. Scholarly theory and evidence on this point is mixed, however. We use Swedish data and conduct a panel analysis quantifying the degree to which the ethnic composition of the neighbourhood affects the subsequent labour income of individuals for the 1991 to 2006 period. We employ a fixed effects model to reduce the potential bias arising from unmeasured individual characteristics leading to neighbourhood selection. We also control for a range of individual demographic and socio-economic attributes. Based on …

The New Orient Express: Current Trends And Regulations In Space Tourism And The Need For Commercial Hypersonic Point To Point Travel, Patrick Zurita

Global Business Law Review

This paper aims to answer the question of what the new privatized space regime will not only look like, but also if and how it will expand. In answering the question an examination of who will most be affected by space tourism and a subsequent space travel industry is required. Additionally, a cursory look at the history of airline regulation both domestically and abroad is needed to understand the future of private space flight. Next, an overview of past and current space and hypersonic technologies is required to attempt any projection of future advances. Finally, this paper sets out to …

The International Sugar Trade And Sustainable Development: Curtailing The Sugar Rush, Nadia B. Ahmad

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article will briefly examine the history of the international sugar trade and discuss the current status of the sugar industry in world markets, specifically in Brazil, India, and the United States. The international sugar trade industry should consider instituting sustainable development practices not only for the public good, but also to enhance its bottom line. As "one of the most highly distorted agricultural commodity markets," the international sugar market is an ideal environment to implement sustainable development practices and begin change with respect to CSR through "guaranteed minimum payments to producers, production and marketing controls (quotas), state-regulated retail prices, …

Setting The Table For Urban Agriculture, Margot J. Pollans Jan 2014

Setting The Table For Urban Agriculture, Margot J. Pollans

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article provides context for the various roles that law plays in the cultivation of urban agriculture. This article first reflects on how popular support for the development of a legal framework that promotes urban agriculture is rooted deeply in American agrarian traditions. The article then notes the palatable tension between the rhetoric in support of urban agriculture and the modes of urban law and planning that dominated the twentieth century. It considers how various approaches to urban planning have facilitated or thwarted urban agriculture and surveys recent legal developments designed to accommodate and encourage urban agriculture projects as alternatives …
