Quaking Aspen In The Residential-Wildland Interface: Elk Herbivory Hinders Forest Conservation, Paul C. Rogers, Allison Jones, James C. Catlin, James Shuler, Arthur Morris, Michael R. Kuhns Jan 2014

Quaking Aspen In The Residential-Wildland Interface: Elk Herbivory Hinders Forest Conservation, Paul C. Rogers, Allison Jones, James C. Catlin, James Shuler, Arthur Morris, Michael R. Kuhns

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) forests are experiencing numerous impediments across North America. In the West, recent drought, fire suppression, insects, diseases, climate trends, inappropriate management, and ungulate herbivory are impacting these high biodiversity forests. Additionally, ecological tension zones are sometimes created where the above factors intermingle with jurisdictional boundaries. The public-private land interface may result in stress to natural areas where game species find refuge and plentiful forage at the expense of ecosystem function. We examined putative herbivore impacts to aspen forests at Wolf Creek Ranch (WCR), a large residential landscape in northern Utah. Forty-three ha-1 monitoring plots were …

Special Section: The Rise of Health Professions. Over the past decade, the health-care sector added jobs month after month, even when jobs were disappearing elsewhere in the economy. The field is projected to add many more in the coming decade, so it makes sense that the number of students majoring in health-related fields rose sharply. Roughly one in 10 college graduates now gets a health-related degree.

Teaching With Audacity: A Board Game For Urban Studies, Colby King, Matthew Cazessus Jan 2014

Teaching With Audacity: A Board Game For Urban Studies, Colby King, Matthew Cazessus

Sociology Faculty Publications

In order to improve undergraduate students’ mastery of urban theory, we developed an active‐learning module that allows participants to compete with one another in a board game of strategic planning and coalition formation called “AudaCity.” Utilizing a games‐based learning design, the game places players in the roles of adversarial property developers, political actors, and zoning committees all seeking to build and raise rent from developments within a spatially constrained urban grid. Game mechanics such as proximity bonuses and limitations to available space compel players to simultaneously compete against and collaborate with their peers to advance their development agenda while thwarting …

A Strategic Analysis For Small Hydro Power (Shp) Development In Himachal Pradesh, India, Steven Spicer Jan 2014

A Strategic Analysis For Small Hydro Power (Shp) Development In Himachal Pradesh, India, Steven Spicer

Undergraduate Review

In addition to India currently being the second most populated country in the world, economists at Goldman Sachs have listed India as one of the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South America) projected to be most dominant economies by 2050. In spite of the rapid growth in India’s economy, there are still many serious issues affecting the majority of its people. The US Energy Information Administration reports that roughly 25% of India’s 1.2 billion people are living without access to electricity; which translates to 300 million citizens without power (EIA, 2013). Various estimates put India’s energy supply …

Competing For The Motherland: Sports Spectacle And Nationalism During The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Tara Law

Slavic Studies Honors Papers

The Russian state guided the extended narration of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games, and hence the reproduction of the Russian nation in the months preceding the spectacle. The Sochi Olympics proffered a vision of Russian national identity before a global mass audience, but also to the Russian nation itself. The Olympics courted the gaze of the Russian national audience, drawing its attention to the accomplishments of individual Russians. The image of Russia constructed during the Games was of a robust, modern nation guided by a strong state under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin. Combining athletic and artistic elements, …

The Age Of Constitutions In The Americas, M C. Mirow Jan 2014

The Age Of Constitutions In The Americas, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

The late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been aptly called the “Age of Codifications.” The same period was also the Age of Constitutions. Although a great deal is known about the migration of prenational and transnational legal sources and ideas that led to national codes of civil and criminal law in Europe and the Americas, much less is known about similar processes on the constitutional level. Constitutional historians have been more parochial than their private law counterparts, most likely because of the relationship between constitutions and nations. In the light of independence, nations immediately needed constitutions to solidify gains and …

The Importance Of The Young Invincibles To The Success Of The Affordable Care, Ethel K. Ishimwe Jan 2014

The Importance Of The Young Invincibles To The Success Of The Affordable Care, Ethel K. Ishimwe

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Health care reform in the United States, as codified in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), includes an individual mandate to insure that all citizens are participants in public or privately funded health insurance programs. Universal participation insures that the national risk pool of insured persons will include the broadest spectrum of patient utilizers from the very healthy, who are low utilizers, to the very sick who are high utilizers of health care services. It is only through this high level of participation that the increased services and cost savings of health care reform can be realized. Key to this comprehensive …

Could The 2012 Drought In Central U. S. Have Been Anticipated?, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Danny Barandiaran, Kyle Hilburn, Paul Houser

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

This paper summarizes research related to the 2012 record drought in the central United States conducted by members of the NEWS (NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Energy and Water cycle Study) Working Group. Past drought patterns were analyzed for signal coherency with latest drought and the contribution of long-term trends in the Great Plains low-level jet, an important regional circulation feature of the spring rainy season in the Great Plains. Long-term changes in the seasonal transition from rainy spring into dry summer were also examined. Potential external forcing from radiative processes, soil-air interactions, and ocean teleconnections were assessed as …

Developing Discrimination: Foreign Direct Investment And The Ethnic Conflicts In The Borderlands Of Burma, Wesley Beggs Jan 2014

Developing Discrimination: Foreign Direct Investment And The Ethnic Conflicts In The Borderlands Of Burma, Wesley Beggs

Theses & ETDs

Since independence from colonial rule in 1948, Burma/Myanmar has suffered some of the longest-running and most diverse ethnic insurgencies in the world. Several of the ethnic minorities in the borderlands have organized armed movements against the central government in the pursuit of greater autonomy, but the conflict-affected borderlands are also the location of many recent development projects financed by foreign actors. This study explores the relationship between foreign direct investment activity in the ethnic borderlands and the armed insurgencies by examining the effects of building hydropower dams as well as oil and gas pipelines in ethnic states. This research found …

I Be Goin Places: Sociolinguistic Assimilation In A Baltimore Boarding School, Kade Doyle Needham Jan 2014

I Be Goin Places: Sociolinguistic Assimilation In A Baltimore Boarding School, Kade Doyle Needham

Theses & ETDs

I performed sociolinguistic ethnographic research at The SEED School of Maryland, a statewide public boarding school targeting students whose socioeconomic status hinders their academic potential. During the participant observation, I interviewed staff, teachers and students while collecting written and spontaneous speech samples from the classroom, dorms and cafeteria. The situationally-specific frequencies of AAVE-marked and AAVE-unmarked English measures assimilation into both academic and boarding school culture, offering a nuanced insight into the dimorphic social world of the students. In the end, I relate behavioral and linguistic developments to teaching styles, motivational tactics and the discipline system.

Holy Mackerel, Aoife Carrigy Jan 2014

Holy Mackerel, Aoife Carrigy

Irish Food Blogs

Hi folks. My name is Aoife Carrigy and I’m a freelance food, wine and travel writer based in Dublin, Ireland.

Having spent many happy years working front-of-house in restaurants – combined with dallies in book publishing, stints of teaching English and journalism, posts as restaurant reviewer for various free-sheets, and adventures in travel including a job as a cook on a 4WD tour of Australia’s north-west outback – I was lucky enough to work full-time as Deputy Editor of Ireland’s FOOD&WINE Magazine for five years. During that time I came into contact with some amazing artisan food producers, restaurateurs, chefs, …
