Advances In Documentation, Digital Curation, Virtual Exhibition, And A Test Of 3d Geometric Morhpometrics: A Case Study Of The Vanderpool Vessels From The Ancestral Caddo Territory, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula, Michael J. O'Brien
CRHR: Archaeology
Three-dimensional (3D) digital scanning of archaeological materials is typically used as a tool for artifact documentation. With the permission of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, 3D documentation of Caddo funerary vessels from the Vanderpool site (41SM77) was conducted with the initial goal of ensuring that these data would be publicly available for future research long after the vessels were repatriated. A digital infrastructure was created to archive and disseminate the resultant 3D datasets, ensuring that they would be accessible by both researchers and the general public (CRHR 2014a). However, 3D imagery can be used for much more than documentation. To …

Archaeology And Social Geography In The Sunlight Basin, Wyoming, Laura L. Schreiber, Amanda Burtt
University of Wyoming National Park Service Research Center Annual Report
Painter Cave (48PA3288) is a dry rockshelter in the foothills of the Absaroka Mountains of northwestern Wyoming that has deeply stratified deposits. Archaeological materials were disturbed several decades ago by looters, who reportedly took a number of perishable Native American artifacts including moccasins and a cradle board, as well as numerous other unidentified objects. Preliminary assessment by Shoshone National Forest Service personnel in 2011 suggested that the site might still be partially intact. Indiana University’s Bighorn Archaeology project conducted a pilot study at Painter Cave and the surrounding area in 2014 in an effort to identify and recover any additional …

Ecotourism In The Galápagos Islands: A Case Study In The Anthropology Of Tourism, Claire Wellbeloved-Stone
Ecotourism In The Galápagos Islands: A Case Study In The Anthropology Of Tourism, Claire Wellbeloved-Stone
Anthropology Department Honors Papers
This project originated my sophomore year as my application to the Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts (CISLA). In my search for a project that would relate to anthropology and the Galápagos Islands I discovered the potential to study the tourism industry and its effects on society. Over the course of three years the project developed from a proposal as part of my application to CISLA to an internship and an honors thesis.
The focus of this thesis is the study of ecotourism in the Galápagos Islands, with a concentration on the interaction between tourists and …

"Manufacturing” Community: Solidarity, Profit, And The Bar Owner, Timothy Hartshorn
Anthropology Department Honors Papers
The following study examines the potential of eight independently run bars in New London, Connecticut to “manufacture” community. This process is examined with particular focus on the tension felt by bar owners, who must continually attract new patrons while still keeping their current “regulars” content. Inherent to this study is the reexamination of “community” as an analytically useful term in anthropological scholarship, with particular emphasis on disproportionate feelings of belonging and commitment as manifested by individual interpretation of collectively rendered symbols.
This data for this study was collected by virtue of semi-structured interviews as well as ethnographic field observation. The …

City Of Auburn Quality Of Life Study Union Street Neighborhood, Becky Culp, Gabe Nudel, Rachel Ryan
Community Engaged Research Reports
This project was conducted in collaboration with Auburn City Hall’s Urban Development Office to better understand the perceptions of quality of life in the Union Street neighborhood (USN) in Auburn, Maine. This neighborhood, along with Downtown and New Auburn, have been deemed “blighted” by the City of Auburn. We administered surveys whose results will be considered in the City of Auburn’s 5 Year Consolidated Plan. Part of this plan includes federal funding from a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant that Auburn will apply for this spring. This study informs Auburn’s urban planning process by considering the local community’s voices …

Since 1967, when it decided Katz v. United States, the Supreme Court has tied the right to be free of unwanted government scrutiny to the concept of reasonable xpectations of privacy.[1] An evaluation of reasonable expectations depends, among other factors, upon an assessment of the intrusiveness of government action. When making such assessment historically the Court has considered police conduct with clear temporal, geographic, or substantive limits. However, in an era where new technologies permit the storage and compilation of vast amounts of personal data, things are becoming more complicated. A school of thought known as “mosaic theory” …
Speech Engines, James Grimmelmann
Speech Engines, James Grimmelmann

Academic and regulatory debates about Google are dominated by two opposing theories of what search engines are and how law should treat them. Some describe search engines as passive, neutral conduits for websites’ speech; others describe them as active, opinionated editors: speakers in their own right. The conduit and editor theories give dramatically different policy prescriptions in areas ranging from antitrust to copyright. But they both systematically discount search users’ agency, regarding users merely as passive audiences.
A better theory is that search engines are not primarily conduits or editors, but advisors. They help users achieve their diverse and individualized …

The New Territorialism In The Not-So-New Frontier Of Cyberspace, William L. Reynolds, Juliet M. Moringiello
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay addresses the following questions: What jurisdictions should govern cyberspace problems? Are cyberspace problems different from those in the tangible world? If so, what are the implications for governance? We conclude that the judicial response to cyberspace governance has been mostly correct. After some adaptation problems (an early learning curve), courts have generally followed common law analogs to cyberspace problems. In other words, those problems are not treated as unique unless there is something special about the internet that suggests different resolutions are needed. There certainly is nothing to suggest that American courts or legislatures are trying to occupy …

Perceptions Of Neighborhood Safety And Asthma Among Children And Adolescents In Los Angeles: A Multilevel Analysis, M. Camacho-Rivera, I. Kawachi, G. G. Bennett, S. V. Subramanian
Journal Articles
Background: Research examining the impact of neighborhoods on asthma has shown an increased interest in the role of the psychosocial environment. We examined the associations between various measures of neighborhood safety, individual and family characteristics, and asthma outcomes among children in Los Angeles. Methods: Multilevel logistic regression models were used to analyze data on 3,114 children across 65 neighborhoods from Wave 1 of the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (2000 to 2002). Primary caregivers reported asthma outcome and all individual covariates; home environmental characteristics were observed by the interviewer. Results: In fully adjusted models, parents who reported their neighborhood …

Effect Of Temperature On Feeding Period Of Larval Blacklegged Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) On Eastern Fence Lizards, Eric L. Rulison, Roger A. Lebrun, Howard S. Ginsberg
Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications
Ambient temperature can influence tick development time, and can potentially affect tick interactions with pathogens and with vertebrate hosts. We studied the effect of ambient temperature on duration of attachment of larval blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, to eastern fence lizards, Sceloporus undulatus (Bosc & Daudin). Feeding periods of larvae that attached to lizards under preferred temperature conditions for the lizards (WARM treatment: temperatures averaged 36.6°C at the top of the cage and 25.8°C at the bottom, allowing behavioral thermoregulation) were shorter than for larvae on lizards held under cool conditions (COOL treatment temperatures averaged 28.4°C at top of cage …

Distinctly Cleveland: How The Arts Are Helping To Revitalize Rust Belt Cities, Gregory M. Sadlek, Joan Chase
English Faculty Publications
This book addresses many of the common reasons why the so-called “Rust Belt” cities suffered decline and the many solutions proposed and efforts already undertaken that seek to reverse the decline and spur rejuvenation. The contributors discuss the reasons for the decline including globalization, energy policy–related issues, and even the impact of air conditioning on location decisions. They also detail many of the entrepreneurial efforts undertaken in cities like Cleveland that are helping to reinvigorate once-depressed areas, offer suggestions related to investments in workforce training and current energy policy, critique the use of economic development subsidies, discuss the success of …

Calorie Labeling, Edward F. Ansello
Calorie Labeling, Edward F. Ansello
Director's Editorials from Age in Action
As required by the Affordable Care Act, chain restaurants with 20 or more locations in the US will soon have to display calorie information on their menus. Does knowing this information translate to changing our eating behavior and improving our nutritional intake? Will this change affect older adults in a meaningful way? Menu labeling should be viewed as an early approach in governmental policy to address the obesity epidemic.

Mitochondrial Dna Variation In The Eastern Pondmussel, Ligumia Nasuta (Bivalvia: Unionoida), In The Great Lakes Region, Mariah Wild Scott, Matthew T. Begley, Robert A. Krebs, David T. Zanatta
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Most freshwater mussel species in the Great Lakes colonized the region from the Mississippi River basin and few appear to have colonized from Atlantic coast rivers. The Eastern Pondmussel, Ligumia nasuta, is widespread along the Atlantic coast but occurs elsewhere only in the Great Lakes, suggesting that it is one of the few Great Lakes species of Atlantic origin. Great Lakes populations are now imperiled following invasion of the lakes by dreissenid mussels. We examined patterns of diversity in the mitochondrial CO1 and ND1 genes in L. nasuta populations in the Great Lakes and in Atlantic coast rivers. Genetic diversity …

Vindiciae, Contra Tyrannos: The Influence Of The Reformed Tradition In The American Founding (Chapter 2 Of Faith And The Founders Of The American Republic), Mark David Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
In his magisterial history of religion in America, Yale historian Sydney Ahlstrom estimated that the Reformed tradition was “the religious heritage of three-fourths of the American people in 1776.” This chapter traces the development of Reformed or Calvinist political thought from John Calvin to the American founding. It highlights ways in which Reformed ideas and concerns exacerbated tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain, provided a theological rationale for resisting British rule, and proposed a political framework for republican self-government.
