Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Scarab beetles exhibit an astonishing variety of rigid exo-skeletal outgrowths, known as ‘‘horns’’. These traits are often sexually dimorphic and vary dramatically across species in size, shape, location, and allometry with body size. In many species, the horn exhibits disproportionate growth resulting in an exaggerated allometric relationship with body size, as compared to other traits, such as wings, that grow proportionately with body size. Depending on the species, the smallest males either do not produce a horn at all, or they produce a disproportionately small horn for their body size. While the diversity of horn shapes and their behavioural ecology …

Creating Student-¬‐Experts In Hydroecology, Richard Gill Feb 2014

Creating Student-¬‐Experts In Hydroecology, Richard Gill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The National Research Council, in its report on how people learn, identified key differences between novices and experts (Bransford et al. 2000; Donovan and Bransford 2005). One of the grand challenges of education is to shepherd students through the process of becoming experts. Mentored research experiences are a critical component of this process as students “grow in skills and increase in responsibility” (Mentoring Principle #3) and participate in projects that “extend well beyond the routine” and “[develop] of new concepts of learning” (Mentoring Principle #5). Bransford et al. (2000) emphasized that developing into an expert requires, among other things, (1) …

A New Approach For The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Data: Theory And Sensitivity Analysis Of The Moment Distance Method, E.A. L. Salas, G. M. Henebry Feb 2014

A New Approach For The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Data: Theory And Sensitivity Analysis Of The Moment Distance Method, E.A. L. Salas, G. M. Henebry

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

We present the Moment Distance (MD) method to advance spectral analysis in vegetation studies. It was developed to take advantage of the information latent in the shape of the reflectance curve that is not available from other spectral indices. Being mathematically simple but powerful, the approach does not require any curve transformation, such as smoothing or derivatives. Here, we show the formulation of the MD index (MDI) and demonstrate its potential for vegetation studies. We simulated leaf and canopy reflectance samples derived from the combination of the PROSPECT and SAIL models to understand the sensitivity of the new method to …

Mapping Sociocultural Values Of Visitors On The Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Alexa North Todd Feb 2014

Mapping Sociocultural Values Of Visitors On The Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Alexa North Todd

Dissertations and Theses

Contested land-management plans make spatial data about values that people attach to the landscape necessary for federal land management. The study area for this project is the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, an area that is divided by a complex mosaic of land jurisdictions, including public lands administered by the National Park Service, National Forest Service, and Washington State, as well as interspersed tribal and private landholdings surrounding the perimeter. During the summer of 2012, I collected map and survey data from visitors at fourteen popular destinations around the Olympic Peninsula, including visitor centers, campgrounds, trail access points, and a ferry. Three …

Gender-Based Screening For Chlamydial Infection And Divergent Infection Trends In Men And Women, Susan M. Rogers, Charles F. Turner, William C. Miller, Emily Erbelding, Elizabeth Eggleston, Sylvia Tan, Anthony Roman, Marcia Hobbs, James Chromy, Ravikiran Muvva, Laxminarayana Ganapathi

Publications and Research

Objectives: To assess the potential impact of chlamydial screening policy that recommends routine screening of women but not men.

Methods: Population surveys of probability samples of Baltimore adults aged 18 to 35 years in 1997–1998 and 2006–2009 collected biospecimens to estimate trends in undiagnosed chlamydial infection. Survey estimates are compared to surveillance data on diagnosed chlamydial infections reported to the Health Department.

Results: Prevalence of undiagnosed chlamydial infection among men increased from 1.6% to 4.0%, but it declined from 4.3% to 3.1% among women (p = 0.028 for test of interaction). The annual (average) number of diagnosed infections was substantially …

Motivating Strategies Leaders Employ To Increase Follower Effort, Michael L. Schwartz, Patricia A. Castelli Feb 2014

Motivating Strategies Leaders Employ To Increase Follower Effort, Michael L. Schwartz, Patricia A. Castelli

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The purpose of this research was to determine which motivating strategies followers desire from their leaders and what motivating strategies are actually displayed by their leaders to increase followers’ effort. Additionally, this research assessed the followers’ level of self-reported extra effort and the amount of extra effort followers perceive their leaders exert. From this data, conclusions were drawn regarding the relationships between followers’ self-reported extra effort and the followers’ perception of their leaders’ extra effort. This quantitative research study was conducted via LinkedIn using Survey Monk ey and is based on Keller’s 42 item ARCS Model (attention, relevance, confidence, and …

Who Comes To The Bucharest Markets?, Daniel N. Dubei, Dr. Sam Otterstrom Feb 2014

Who Comes To The Bucharest Markets?, Daniel N. Dubei, Dr. Sam Otterstrom

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Johann Von Thunen’s model of agricultural land use has done much to explain the use of agricultural land in Europe prior to industrialization. His theory predicts the type of crop produced by the distance from the market. Modern transportation (1) though has improved the spatial pattern of crops and other products; no longer do they follow his theory. Romania is a country that is not yet fully modernized, and I researched how transportation is changing the land use now. I have found that improvements in transportation have allowed many farmers to come to the Bucharest market from further distances than …

Historical Evolution Of Latin American City Structure: Costa Rican Cities As Test Cases, Vaughn Robert Pickell, Dr. Samuel M. Otterstrom Feb 2014

Historical Evolution Of Latin American City Structure: Costa Rican Cities As Test Cases, Vaughn Robert Pickell, Dr. Samuel M. Otterstrom

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When the European explorers came to America they brought with them their pattern of city design. Jorge Hardoy (1982) asserts that the Spanish “built cities that in layout, architectural styles, technology, land-use patterns and even in criteria used to select the location of the new settlements” was just as they had done in Europe (24). As part of their European tradition, the conquistadors believed that God should be the focus of all good society, and therefore built the local Catholic church in the center of the newly established city. Regardless of the size of the local population, a church would …

In Territorio Veritas? Bringing Geographical Coherence Into The Ambiguous Definition Of Geographical Indications Of Origin, Irene Calboli Feb 2014

In Territorio Veritas? Bringing Geographical Coherence Into The Ambiguous Definition Of Geographical Indications Of Origin, Irene Calboli

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, I touch upon a topic that remains highly controversial in international intellectual property law—the legal protection of geographical indications of origin (GIs): Chianti wine, Champagne sparkling wine, Gorgonzola cheese, Parma ham, Darjeeling tea, Colombian coffee, and other terms that indicate (or are supposed to indicate, as I will develop in this article) the geographical origin of the products they identify. In line with the theme of this special issue of the WIPO Journal, I focus on the requirement of “geographical origin” upon which the protection of GIs has been historically built and is generally justified. In particular, …

Marine Invertebrate Larval Distribution At The Hydrothermal Vent Site Of Gueishandao, Hans-Uwe Dahms, Li-Chun Tseng, Jiang-Shiou Hwang Feb 2014

Marine Invertebrate Larval Distribution At The Hydrothermal Vent Site Of Gueishandao, Hans-Uwe Dahms, Li-Chun Tseng, Jiang-Shiou Hwang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Scientists remain uncertain about numerous aspects of hydrothermal vent (HV) ecology, including the reproductive biology of their biota, as well as their recruitment and dispersal during larval stages (meroplankton) in the plankton above the HV sites. We studied the meroplankton from a shallow HV site off the northeastern coast of Taiwan, in the northwest Pacific Ocean. Our findings potentially explain how fauna endemic to HVs persist at specific HV sites. With the exception of some damaged Cnidaria and Ctenophora, the plankton net catches were in good condition and sufficient for identification.

Ontology Driven Model For An Engineered Agile Healthcare System, Balaji Ramadoss Feb 2014

Ontology Driven Model For An Engineered Agile Healthcare System, Balaji Ramadoss

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare is in urgent need of an effective way to manage the complexity it of its systems and to prepare quickly for immense changes in the economics of healthcare delivery and reimbursement. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) releases policies affecting inpatient and long-term care hospitals policies that directly affect reimbursement and payment rates. One of these policy changes, a quality-reporting program called Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR), will effect approximately 3,400 acute-care and 440 long-term care hospitals. IQR sets guidelines and measures that will contain financial incentives and penalties based on the quality of care provided. CMS, the …

A Survey Of Student Use Of Sherrill Library, Marilyn Geller, Library Assessment Workgroup

Library Reports

In the summer of 2013, the Sherrill Library Assessment Work Group began work on a project to identify areas where the current physical library facility excels and where it warrants improvement, and to understand how and why students are using physical libraries in general and the Sherrill Library facility specifically. We chose to use an online survey that was distributed to all current EDS students and to all LU students enrolled in at least one class on campus during the fall 2013 semester. The combined population size for both schools totaled 3,675 students. To achieve a margin of error of …

Ecology And Diversity Of Cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattaria) From The Virgin Islands, Wenhua Lu, Barry D. Valentine, Daniel E. Perez-Gelabert, Esteban Gutiérrez

Insecta Mundi

The Virgin Islands (except St. Croix) are geologically part of the Puerto Rico Bank and biologically related to Puerto Rico, but their cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattaria) were not yet as well studied as those on Puerto Rico. To elucidate the number of species, life history, range distribution, and seasonal abundance of these cockroaches, we have conducted a quantitative study since June 2000 using a Malaise trap on Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, in addition to other conventional collecting methods. We found 21 species: Blattella germanica (Linnaeus), Cariblatta antiguensis (Saussure and Zehntner), Cariblatta sp. 2, Cariblatta sp. 3, Colapteroblatta sp. 1, Eurycotis …
