An Analysis Of Public Perception And Response To Hurricane Sandy, Lindsay L. Rice

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in Brigantine, New Jersey on October 29th, 2012. The storm impacted the coastal regions of New Jersey and New York, especially the heavily populated area of New York City. This research, which analyzes secondary data obtained from a telephone survey, investigates the public response of residents before, during and after Hurricane Sandy. The survey consisted of questions regarding what the residents expected concerning the threat of Hurricane Sandy, whether it matched what they experienced, where they got their information and how they made their decision to evacuate or not. The results from the survey were statistically …

Determining The Source Of Anomalous Segments In A Karst Stream, Kathryn Emily Schroeder Apr 2014

Determining The Source Of Anomalous Segments In A Karst Stream, Kathryn Emily Schroeder

Theses and Dissertations

Southeastern Minnesota is characterized by an extensive karst network. In Kentucky, Carter Caves State Resort Park is a similar karst area that has exhibited karst anomalies, or `bumps,' in a longitudinal stream profile. This study aimed to determine if these same karst anomalies can be found in southeast Minnesota, where LiDAR data are available, and if these bumps are actually karst features. Profiles of carbonate and siliciclastic streams were observed to determine if the presence of anomalies in only carbonate streams, both lithologies, or neither. Another objective was to determine if GIS could be an effective method at generating these …

Reproducing Laboratory-Scale Rip Currents On A Barred Beach By A Boussinesq Wave Model, Ke-Zhao Fang, Ji-Wei Yin, Zhi-Li Zou, Zhong-Bo Liu, Ping Dong Apr 2014

Reproducing Laboratory-Scale Rip Currents On A Barred Beach By A Boussinesq Wave Model, Ke-Zhao Fang, Ji-Wei Yin, Zhi-Li Zou, Zhong-Bo Liu, Ping Dong

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The pioneering work of Haller [8] on physically investigating bathymetry-controlled rip currents in the laboratory is a standard benchmark test for verifying numerical nearshore circulation models. In this paper, a numerical model based on higher-order Boussinesq equations was developed to reproduce the number of experiments involved in such an investigation, with emphasis on the effect of computational domain size on the numerical results. A set of Boussinesq equations with optimum linear properties and second-order full nonlinearity were solved using a higher-order finite difference scheme. Wave breaking, moving shoreline, bottom friction, and mixing were all treated empirically. The developed model was …

From ‘Boat People’ To Refugees: Analyzing The Plight Of Asylum Seekers In Australia And The Country’S Violations Of International Law, Emily Eileen Mankowski Apr 2014

From ‘Boat People’ To Refugees: Analyzing The Plight Of Asylum Seekers In Australia And The Country’S Violations Of International Law, Emily Eileen Mankowski

Collection of Engaged Learning

The government of Australia has violated international human rights laws regarding to refugee and asylum seeker rights. Asylum seekers fleeing to Australia by boat, or by any “irregular maritime arrival,” are denied basic human rights outlined under the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, both of which Australia has signed and ratified into its domestic legal code. The public perception of these colloquially deemed, “boatpeople,” changes depending on the political party in office. The transitional nature of this immigration issue allows for human rights abuses to go uncontested. This paper outlines the history of asylum seeker issues in Australia, …

An Ethical Look At Hydraulic Fracturing, Daniel Brock Apr 2014

An Ethical Look At Hydraulic Fracturing, Daniel Brock

Collection of Engaged Learning

Beginning in 2009, hydraulic fracturing started to circulate in news headlines about the safety and reliability of this emerging technology. About 60%–80% of all oil and gas wells in the U.S. will require fracturing treatment to remain viable, so finding new methods to make hydraulic fracturing sustainable while maintaining environmental integrity should be at the forefront of the debate. However, hydraulic fracturing is an extremely controversial topic and most voters do not fully understand all the issues. Hydraulic fracturing will remain a necessary “evil” in order to fulfill the world’s growing energy demand, because hydraulic fracturing extracts natural gas. Until …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Makes the case that Jackson’s sometimes controversial screenwriting decisions actually echo Tolkien’s own abortive attempt to revise and change The Hobbit to bring it into line with the mood and milieu of The Lord of the Rings.

21st Century Workforce Readiness Skills: How Are Students Being Prepared, Peter B. Licata Apr 2014

21st Century Workforce Readiness Skills: How Are Students Being Prepared, Peter B. Licata

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Throughout history, schools have strived to prepare students for future educational and workplace success. This is made evident through the many federal and state policies enacted. While the specific skills required for careers have changed, the goals of the educational system have not. The 21st Century international workplace requires a generation of skilled workers with specific attributes. To prepare students for gainful employment and to combat the high percentage of high school students who drop out of school unprepared for the workforce, school districts across the country have instituted Career and Technical Education and Industry Certification programs. These programs strive …

Response Of Benthic Foraminifera To Ocean Acidification And Impact On Florida's Carbonate Sediment Production, Paul O. Knorr Apr 2014

Response Of Benthic Foraminifera To Ocean Acidification And Impact On Florida's Carbonate Sediment Production, Paul O. Knorr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2 are in dynamic equilibrium with the oceans. The absorption of CO2 by seawater causes a decrease in seawater pH and calcite saturation state (SS). This process, termed ocean acidification, exerts deleterious effects on marine calcifiers. Studies of symbiont-bearing large benthic foraminifera (LBF) have reported a generally unfavorable response to increased concentrations of carbon dioxide ([CO2]).

Experiments and analyses were undertaken to examine the effect of increased [CO2] on the growth rate, ultrastructure, stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen, as well as Mg/Ca of the high-Mg miliolid Archaias angulatus and the low-Mg rotalid Amphistegina gibbosa. A …

Discussion, Critical Reflection, Knowledge Construction In Experiential Education. A Response To "Taking People's History Back To The People: An Approach To Making History Popular, Relevant, And Intellectual", Michael Kopish Apr 2014

Discussion, Critical Reflection, Knowledge Construction In Experiential Education. A Response To "Taking People's History Back To The People: An Approach To Making History Popular, Relevant, And Intellectual", Michael Kopish

Democracy & Education

This response offers cross-disciplinary pedagogical insights and conceptual considerations as a supplement to the democratic experiential history project described by Lempert (2013). The intent of the project is ambitious and worthwhile; however, without emphasis on the critical process of sense-making through discussion, reflection, and collaborative knowledge construction the project falls short of its potential impact. In the paper I offer suggestions and recommendations for practitioners who might consider enacting the project.

We Were There Too: Learning From Black Male Teachers In Mississippi About Successful Teaching Of Black Students, Cleveland Hayes, Brenda Juarez, Veronica Escoffery-Runnels Apr 2014

We Were There Too: Learning From Black Male Teachers In Mississippi About Successful Teaching Of Black Students, Cleveland Hayes, Brenda Juarez, Veronica Escoffery-Runnels

Democracy & Education

Applying culturally relevant and social justice–oriented notions of teaching and learning and a critical race theory (CRT) analysis of teacher preparation in the United States, this study examines the oral life histories of two Black male teachers recognized for their successful teaching of Black students. These histories provide us with a venue for identifying thematic patterns across the two teachers' educational philosophies and pedagogical practices and for analyzing how these teachers' respective personal and professional experiences have influenced their individual and collective approaches to teaching and learning.

Nonviolent Action As A Necessary Component In Educating For Democracy, Barbara A. Peterson Apr 2014

Nonviolent Action As A Necessary Component In Educating For Democracy, Barbara A. Peterson

Democracy & Education

Educating for democracy, seen within a liberal democratic framework, requires that students develop the requisite knowledge and skills to recognize injustice and work effectively to oppose it. Stitzlein’s notion of dissent is examined in conjunction with Kahne and Westheimer’s argument for teaching democratic capacities by actively engaging students in addressing real world problem. This paper further suggests that for active dissent to lead to real change, we must extend our notion of dissent to include the knowledge and skills to influence the balance of power. Teaching students for democracy requires teaching them theory, history, and techniques of nonviolent action so …

Using Cbct As A Diagnostic Tool For Evaluation Of Infrabony Defects In Vivo, Anya Rost Apr 2014

Using Cbct As A Diagnostic Tool For Evaluation Of Infrabony Defects In Vivo, Anya Rost

Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Clinicians rely on radiographs and clinical exam to assess infrabony defects. However, two-dimensional radiographs have many limitations. Three-dimensional imaging has shown promise and has provided more precise measurements of defects created in skulls. The aim of this study is to compare the diagnostic efficacy of cone beam computed tomography to clinical measurements in patients presenting with infrabony defects. METHODS: The study population included 20 patients with 25 infrabony defects. Clinical measurements of pocket depth (PD), gingival margin (GM), bone sounding (BS) were obtained and PD and BS were compared to CBCT measurements. RESULTS: The average difference between the means …

More Than Just Hospitals: An Examination Of Cluster Components And Configurations, Patrick Shay Apr 2014

More Than Just Hospitals: An Examination Of Cluster Components And Configurations, Patrick Shay

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 25 years, health care organization scholars have observed the dramatic emergence of hospital-based clusters in local markets throughout the U.S. These important organizational forms require same-system ownership of multiple general, acute care hospitals operating within a single local market, and as such they include multi-hospital systems that are entirely contained in a single urban market as well as clustered extensions or subsystems of larger regional and national systems. However, despite their noted growth as powerful forces in local markets, relatively few studies have examined these clusters, and as a result there remains a significant gap in our …

Edward Bliss Emerson: The Blazing Star Of A Complex Constellation, Silvia E. Rabionet Apr 2014

Edward Bliss Emerson: The Blazing Star Of A Complex Constellation, Silvia E. Rabionet

The Qualitative Report

Edward Bliss Emerson, a younger brother of Ralph Waldo Emerson and a promising scholar in his own right, traveled to the West Indies at the age of 26 hoping to alleviate his pulmonary afflictions. While in the islands, from January 1831 to July 1832, he logged his daily activities in a pocket journal. The journal falls short in revealing Edward’s childhood, his years at Harvard, and his brief time as teacher and lawyer. This biographical essay aims to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of the journal. It unveils defining stages in Edward’s life. Using a wide variety of archival documents, …

Gettin' Weird Together: The Performance Of Identity And Community Through Cultural Artifacts Of Electronic Dance Music Culture, Andrew Matthew Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

The growing popularity of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) on nearly every continent has given rise to the transition of EDM music from underground raves to large scale, multiple-day music festivals. Attendance at EDM events, whether at concerts or festivals, is primarily dominated by today's youth generation. The number of youth attending these events continues to grow as elements of EDM are being mixed into other mainstream music genres. This increase in the popularity of EDM has been an area of research interest in the past decades for a variety of disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, marketing, and tourism. The present …

A Balance Shifted: The Unionization Of Michigan’S Lake Copper District, 1935-1955, Daniel Schneider Apr 2014

A Balance Shifted: The Unionization Of Michigan’S Lake Copper District, 1935-1955, Daniel Schneider

Retrospection & Respect: The 1913-1914 Mining/Labor Strike Symposium of 2014

Three decades after the unsuccessful 1913-1914 strike at the Lake District copper mines of Michigan, workers organized as Local 584 of the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers (Mine Mill) signed a union contract with Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Company. C & H was the last and most significant of the region’s three major copper mining companies to unionize during the three-year period from 1939 to 1942. This paper tells the untold history of the successful union drives in the Lake District’s copper mines, starting with Copper Range Company in 1939 and encompassing the subsequent unionizations of …

Federal Authority And The Development Of Corporate Mining, 1807-1847, Patrick Allan Pospisek Apr 2014

Federal Authority And The Development Of Corporate Mining, 1807-1847, Patrick Allan Pospisek

Retrospection & Respect: The 1913-1914 Mining/Labor Strike Symposium of 2014

While the 1913-1914 copper country miners’ strike undoubtedly plays an important role in the identity of the Keweenaw Peninsula, it is worth noting that the model of mining corporations employing large numbers of laborers was not a foregone conclusion in the history of American mining. Between 1807 and 1847, public mineral lands in Missouri, in the Upper Mississippi Valley, and along the southern shore of Lake Superior were reserved from sale and subject to administration by the nation’s executive branch. By decree of the federal government, miners in these regions were lessees, not landowners. Yet, in the Wisconsin lead region …

Mainari, Farmari, Lumperjäkki, Piika : “Ethnic Identity” And Earning A Living In The Keweenaw And Nickel Belts To 1930, Peter Krats

Retrospection & Respect: The 1913-1914 Mining/Labor Strike Symposium of 2014

Job seekers in resource-based economic settings like the Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan and the Nickel Basin surrounding Sudbury, Ontario faced many challenges, from the dangers of the job to corporate domination to the “boom and bust” nature of inevitably limited supplies of even “endless” natural riches. Adding to these many challenges in both settings was the employer view that you were best suited to certain tasks.

This paper examines these expectations from “both” ends – how and why did employers see matters this way, and what did the “recipients” make of being cast in certain roles ? Did the …

Arctic Climate Change and the Impacts on Bowhead Whales

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the effects of arctic climate change on bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) and their environment. Bowhead whales are recognized internationally as a threatened species, in part, because of the dramatic declines in their population over the past century. My study is structured around three primary objectives: one, to examine the impacts of melting arctic ice and warming temperatures on species dynamics and habitat; two, to investigate the ways in which current and anticipated human activities in the …
