Teachers' Self-Efficacy In Mathematics And Teaching Mathematics, Instructional Practices, And The Mississippi Curriculum Test, Second Edition For Mathematics In Grades 3-5, Tracy Hardwell Yates
Dissertations
The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship among the mathematical self-efficacies, mathematical teaching self-efficacies, and instructional practices of elementary teachers. This study was also designed to determine how these variables influence an individual teacher’s QDI in relation to MCT2 math scores in grades 3-5. The study included 117 third, fourth, and fifth grade elementary teachers who taught mathematics during the 2012-2013 school year. These teachers completed the Mathematics Teaching and Mathematics Self-Efficacy (MTMSE) survey and the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales (PALS) survey. A descriptive analysis was conducted on the data collected. The results of the …

Determining the patterns and mechanisms of natural selection in the wild is of fundamental importance to understanding the differentiation of populations and the evolution of new species. However, it is often unknown the extent to which adaptive genetic variation is distributed among ecotypes between distinct habitats versus along large-scale geographic environmental gradients, such as those that track latitude. Classic studies of selection in the wild in switch grass, Panicum virgatum, tested for adaptation at both of these levels of natural variation. Here we review what these field experiments and modern agronomic field trials have taught us about natural variation and …

Explaining Variance In Reproductive Success And Food Sharing In Ust’-Avam, Joellie Rasmussen
Explaining Variance In Reproductive Success And Food Sharing In Ust’-Avam, Joellie Rasmussen
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
In light of somatic and reproductive tradeoffs modeled in evolutionary theory, this thesis conducts two analyses of men’s behavior in the indigenous hunter-gatherer community of Ust’-Avam, northern Russia. First, a food-distribution network of men’s hunting documented in 2001 and 2003 is analyzed considering evolutionary models of food sharing: kin selection, reciprocal altruism, generosity signaling, and costly signaling. The frequency of inter-household food transfers from 36 donor households to 102 recipient households are examined using matrix regression with independent variables representing embodied, material, and relational wealth. This analysis does not support the costly signaling model, but provides robust evidence for kinship, …
Dynamic Rating Of Transmission Lines For Improved Wind Energy Integration In Complex Terrain, Tyler Bennett Phillips
Dynamic Rating Of Transmission Lines For Improved Wind Energy Integration In Complex Terrain, Tyler Bennett Phillips
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Transmission congestion is a growing concern that could limit integration on new renewable energy projects to the electricity grid. Because construction of new transmission lines is a long and expensive process, transmission service providers are investigating dynamic line rating (DLR) mehtods that could potentially increase capacity of existing transmission lines. DLR is a smart-grid technology that enables rating of power lines based on real-time conductor temperature that is dependent on local weather conditions. whereas conventional practice relies on a static rating, which is based on conservative local weather assumptions to limit transmission line sag.
With todays improved wind and weather …

Leadership In Food Policy: Raising A Foodie, Shelby Margaret Held
General Human Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The target of this study was obesity’s problematic rise in America. It was noted in the research that children developed habits that would potentially last a lifetime and which also dictated their medical fate. The focus of this study was to identify and decrease the factors of childhood obesity through education, healthy eating, and changes in food choices through student-planned, model menus that would target nutrition and healthy choices. Research linked obesity to the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and chronic diseases in children through decreased physical activity and poor diet due to the lack of essential nutritional knowledge. Other …
Rethinking Heterolocalism: The Case Of Place-Making Among Albanian-Americans, Merita Bushi
Rethinking Heterolocalism: The Case Of Place-Making Among Albanian-Americans, Merita Bushi
Geography Honors Projects
The theory of heterolocalism explores how immigrants connect to their new setting without clustering among co-ethnics. This research explores the role that Albanian-American organizations in Chicago and New York have in immigrant place-making and building a sense of community through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The focus on institutions shifts the discourse from individual behaviors to networks. The Albanian case study is used to argue that segmented heterolocalism is more nuanced and thus describes the sociospatial behavior of immigrants in a way that resonates more closely with immigrants and incorporates their sense of community in a place.
The Social Implications Of Bicycle Infrastructure: What It Means To Bike In America's Best Cycling Cities, Erin Daly
Geography Honors Projects
The abundance of bicycle infrastructure appearing alongside controversial urban revitalization efforts in recent years has left many with distinct perceptions about people who ride bicycles and their role in society. The lifestyle associated with the most visible cyclist cohorts has furthered divisive perceptions and often times created resentment, as what was once a humble tool for mobility has become a symbol of an inaccessible cyclist “culture” often associated with gentrification. This paper aims to acknowledge existing research on how the bicycle has attained so many divisive connotations, while looking at methods to improve this reputation and increase accessibility to utilitarian …

'I Am Here To Build With You": Placemaking And Segmented Assimilation Of Lebanese And Lebanese-Americans In The Twin Cities, Anna Nassiff
Geography Honors Projects
The Lebanese and Lebanese-American community in the United States is known for both its entrepreneurship and its unusually long-lasting cultural memory. Though relatively small communities, the Lebanese and Lebanese-Americans have had a disproportionately large impact on the landscape of the Twin Cities. This paper examines how Christian Lebanese communities in Northeast Minneapolis and the West Side of Saint Paul have used placemaking as a means to retain their cultural heritage, form an original Lebanese-American identity, and alternatively resist and embrace assimilation. It also considers the fluidity of Lebanese-American identity, and how the gray areas of rigid American societal politics have …

Tejanos And The Texas Revolution: Their Reaction To The Centralist Threat, Michael Marino
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The purpose of this study is to ascertain Tejanos’ reasons for rebelling against the Mexican government. Texas was first colonized by the Spanish in the sixteenth century. After the Mexican independence in 1821, Texas became a Mexican territory. Tejanos (Texas Mexicans) lived under Spanish rule and Mexican rule. México enacted a colonization program allowing Anglo immigrants to settle in Texas. Tejanos and Anglo colonists developed a mutual working relationship. This thesis will compare the Spanish and Mexican administrations and how they failed to support and protect Tejanos. This failure is one of the causes for their rebellion. Another cause is …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Last Breath is a Gothic Web Series about a girl who recreates her identity while recovering her lost memory. She discovers dark family secrets and a rigid society that is as equally imprisoning as her room. Ultimately, she engages in a game of intrigue, putting her family name and soul at stake. The story incorporates traditional Gothic and Southern Gothic influences described by Bailey, De Vore et al., Radcliffe, and others. The issue of format is analyzed using insights by Felicia Day, Syd Field, Tennessee Williams, and Robert McKee. The Web Series remains a pioneering medium. Shows such as The …
The Feminization Of The Literary Voice And The Rhetorical Tradition In The Lais Of Marie De France, The Mirror Of Simple Souls, And The Book Of The City Of Ladies, Elisa B. Filippone
The Feminization Of The Literary Voice And The Rhetorical Tradition In The Lais Of Marie De France, The Mirror Of Simple Souls, And The Book Of The City Of Ladies, Elisa B. Filippone
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study demonstrates how The Lais of Marie de France (12th c.) by Marie de France, The Mirror of Simple Souls (14th c.) by Marguerite Porete, and Christine de Pizan’s The Book of City of Ladies (15th c.) serve as the three progressive steps in the transformation of the rhetorical theory and the feminine literary voice, redefining woman from the idea of inferior entity written by men over centuries into the concept of an intellectual and virtuous female human being. The development of a strong feminine literary voice starts as de France feminizes the masculine language she borrows from masculine …
Confederate Borderland, Indian Homeland: Slavery, Sovereignty, And Suffering In Indian Territory, Zachery Christian Cowsert
Confederate Borderland, Indian Homeland: Slavery, Sovereignty, And Suffering In Indian Territory, Zachery Christian Cowsert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis explores the American Civil War in Indian Territory, focusing on how clashing visions of sovereignty within the Five Tribes---Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole---led to the one the most violent and relatively unknown chapters of the Civil War. Particular attention is paid to the first two years of the war, highlighting why the Five Tribes allied with Confederacy, and why those alliances failed over time. Chapter One examines Indian Territory as a borderland, unveiling how various actors within that borderland, including missionaries, Indian agents, white neighbors in Arkansas and Texas, and Indians themselves shaped Native American decision-making and …

Relating Deformation Fabrics To Multiple Metamorphic Events Preserved In Metapelites Of The Belt-Purcell Supergroup In The Snow Peak Area Of Northern Idaho, Kacey Jo Largent
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous work has shown that two significant metamorphic/deformation events (M1/D1 and M2/D2) affected the metapelites of the upper Wallace Formation in the Snow Peak area of northern Idaho. This study's goal was to distinguish the effects of the two metamorphic and deformation events by studying garnet growth and structural fabrics preserved in the metapelites in the Snow Peak area. All the samples within the M1/D1 affected area have the earlier foliation (S1) as the dominant matrix foliation. S1 in these samples was overprinted by S2 which is defined by a crenulation cleavage and/or sheared strain shadows around porphyroblasts that did …

Growing In Community: Eco-Art Therapy In An Elementary School Garden, Stephanie Leftwich-Needham
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
This study endeavored to gain a preliminary understanding of how children respond to eco-art therapy. Mental illness in children is increasing and often leads to adult mental illness. A holistic approach to mental health and early prevention seems vital. Previous studies conclude that children are especially responsive to the healing benefits of both art therapy and nature therapy. However, there is no research to date evaluating an eco-art therapy approach to working with children.
The author led six second-graders identified by the public school system as struggling with social skills through eco-art therapy directives designed to address issues such as …

Spreading The Char: The Importance Of Local Compatibility In The Diffusion Of Biochar Systems To The Smallholder Agriculture Community Context, Laura C. V. Munoz
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis enters the context of smallholder agriculture communities in the developing world. It explores the potentials of biochar and what biochar systems could bring to the smallholder communities while simultaneously bringing environmental benefits. It then acknowledges the challenges of diffusion –the spreading of an unfamiliar innovation. It seeks to answer the question of what will make diffusion of biochar systems more successful in the smallholder context, fixating on the characteristic of compatibility as well as the role local community members can play in making a new biochar system more visible to the rest of the communities.
Fish And Fruit For Food Justice Success, Nickelle A. Raschick
Fish And Fruit For Food Justice Success, Nickelle A. Raschick
Pomona Senior Theses
Given the critical role of food justice organizations in providing for the 49 million Americans who live in food insecure households, one of the most important questions that can be answered today is what determines the success of such an organization. This paper analyzes case studies from Sitka, AK and Portland, OR, aiming to communicate a better understanding of which factors result in an organization’s success and which factors lead it to failure. That information is used to establish guidelines that other organizations seeking to be relevant contributors to the food justice movement can follow. Ultimately, my research discovers that …

Islamism And Security In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Leslie S. Lebl Ms.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
View the Executive Summary
U.S. experts fear violence could once again break out in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and some even want the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to mount another military mission there. Yet few of these experts focus on the danger of gradually expanding Islamism. In Bosnia, it appears to have made slow but steady progress, despite resistance from Bosnia’s moderate Muslims. Senior Bosniak (Muslim) leaders retain their long-standing Islamist ties, and their calls to impose traditional Islamic law, or sharia, and develop closer ties with the Islamic world only aggravate Bosnian Croat and Serb separatism.

"To Corral And Control The Ghetto": Stop, Frisk, And The Geography Of Freedom, Anders Walker
University of Richmond Law Review
While criminal law scholar Michelle Alexander has shown that stop and frisks often serve as the gateway into the criminal justice system for young men of color, she occludes the complex forces that led to their rise." This article seeks to identify those forces, relating the rise of stop and frisk rules to liberal politics, Cold War concerns, and spatial dynamics. To illustrate, this article will proceed in three parts. Part I will demonstrate how Mapp v. Ohio coincided with judicial frustration at police intrusions into private, intimate space-including private thought-precisely at a time when the United States sought to …

Poverty Deconcentration Priorities In Low-Income Housing Policy: A Content Analysis Of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Lihtc) Qualified Allocation Plans, Monique Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Structural inequalities within the social and economic environment have wide reaching impacts on the housing conditions of the poor. These households are marginalized by swelling housing cost burdens, shelter insufficiency, and sociospatial restriction to the lowest income communities. Housing research has examined the correlation between policy and the social location of low-income individuals. However, very little research analyzes the intersection of low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) policy design and sociospatial trends among low-income households. Using content analysis, the purpose of this dissertation is to determine whether the policy documents that guide allocation of the LIHTC encourage poverty deconcentration. The research …

Tinker Gone Viral: Diverging Threshold Tests For Analyzing School Regulation Of Off-Campus Digital Student Speech, Daniel Marcus-Toll
Tinker Gone Viral: Diverging Threshold Tests For Analyzing School Regulation Of Off-Campus Digital Student Speech, Daniel Marcus-Toll
Fordham Law Review
In the context of students’ free speech rights, courts have traditionally premised school regulatory authority on geography, deferring to school officials on campus and limiting a school’s capacity to discipline students for conduct taking place beyond school hours or property. In the contemporary setting, however, where wireless devices, mobile phones, and other communicative technologies abound, a student may affect the school environment significantly without setting foot on school property. In the absence of guidance from the U.S. Supreme Court, the limits of school authority to regulate such “off-campus” student speech are uncertain.
Several courts have permitted school discipline in response …
