Learning From Others: A Five-Year Experience On Teaching Empathic Design, Caroline Gagnon, ValéRie CôTé Jun 2014

Learning From Others: A Five-Year Experience On Teaching Empathic Design, Caroline Gagnon, ValéRie CôTé

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design is about making our world a better place. Design education is a key factor in improving the quality of life and we have to teach our future designers to be better listeners, observers, storytellers and creators. A toolbox to help aspiring designers to seek insight through the aesthetic experience of others is essential to develop their empathic abilities and to learn how to think outside the box. However, it is surprising to realize that only a few design schools offer courses, let alone approaches, to engage in such methodology. This kind of toolbox was created in a pedagogical integration …

Inequitable School Funding In Illinois Colorblind Or Blindfolded: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Counterstory Of Illinois' Lewis E. V. Spagnolo, Mariette Yevette Cheatam Jun 2014

Inequitable School Funding In Illinois Colorblind Or Blindfolded: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Counterstory Of Illinois' Lewis E. V. Spagnolo, Mariette Yevette Cheatam

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the Illinois school funding formula continuing to be one of the most staggeringly unequal in the nation, the Illinois State Supreme Court excludes school finance from judicial review. Although entities such as the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education, continue to both collect and analyze education results along racial and ethnic lines, many studies leave out the importance of racism in their analysis.

In its search for the colorblind doctrine, this critical race theory (CRT) study focuses on Lewis E. v. Spagnolo, 710 N.E.2d 798 …

Effects Of The Interception Of Litterfall By The Understory On Carbon Cycling In Eucalyptus Plantations Of South China, Long Yang, Jun Wang, Yuhui Huang, Dafeng Hui, Meili Wen Jun 2014

Effects Of The Interception Of Litterfall By The Understory On Carbon Cycling In Eucalyptus Plantations Of South China, Long Yang, Jun Wang, Yuhui Huang, Dafeng Hui, Meili Wen

Biology Faculty Research

For the purposes of forest restoration, carbon (C) fixation, and economic improvement, eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla) has been widely planted in South China. The understory of eucalyptus plantations is often occupied by a dense community of the fern Dicranopteris dichotoma, which intercepts tree canopy leaf litter before it reaches the ground. To understand the effects of this interception of litterfall on C cycling in eucalyptus plantations, we quantified the mass of intercepted litter and the influences of litterfall interception on litter decomposition and soil respiration. The total mass of E. urophylla litterfall collected on the understory was similar to that collected …

Dystopian Schools: Recovering Dewey’S Radical Aesthetics In An Age Of Utopia-Gone-Wrong, Jessica A. Heybach, Eric C. Sheffield Jun 2014

Dystopian Schools: Recovering Dewey’S Radical Aesthetics In An Age Of Utopia-Gone-Wrong, Jessica A. Heybach, Eric C. Sheffield

Education and Culture

In this article, we first suggest that contemporary school policies and practices represent a utopia-gone-wrong. In striving for an unattainable educational utopia—that is, all students will be proficient in math and reading by 2014—current polices and their resulting practices have brought a classic dystopian turn—the dehumanization of students, teachers, and administrators. We then argue that such a turn can best be seen and then potentially stopped via a complete dystopian theory of education grounded in John Dewey’s radical aesthetics. In utilizing Dewey’s aesthetic theory as a lens of analysis, we argue that this turn toward dystopia is resulting in an …

Spatial Relationships, Movements, And Habitat Associations Of Introduced “Non-Native” Elk Populations On Etolin And Zarembo Islands, Alaska, Jean S. Davidson Jun 2014

Spatial Relationships, Movements, And Habitat Associations Of Introduced “Non-Native” Elk Populations On Etolin And Zarembo Islands, Alaska, Jean S. Davidson

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Etolin and Roosevelt Elk were introduced to Afognak Island, Alaska in 1929 (State of Alaska, 2013). Due to the success of that introduction, Roosevelt Elk and Rocky Mountain Elk were subsequently introduced to Zarembo and Etolin Islands in Southeast Alaska in 1987. Due to the environment of Southeast Alaska, the ability to determine movements, trends, and habitat preferences are limited. In support of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), this project analyzes the habitat preferences of the elk based upon data from global positioning systems. Locational data is analyzed for proximity to managed lands and considers proximity to …

Cross-Structures And Their Role In The Development Of The Taiwan Fold-And-Thrust Belt, Ellen A. Lamont Jun 2014

Cross-Structures And Their Role In The Development Of The Taiwan Fold-And-Thrust Belt, Ellen A. Lamont

Master's Theses

Traditional models of orogenic growth over-simplify the processes involved in the development of fold-and-thrust belts by failing to take into consideration along-strike irregularities of the collisional footwall. Inherited footwall geometries are fairly common and can drastically alter the shape of an advancing orogen during collision. In Taiwan, the geometry of the Chinese continental margin has been suggested to facilitate the development of several cross-structures, transverse structures that trend oblique to the structural grain of the orogen, within the fold-and-thrust belt. These cross-structures are believed to accommodate deformation around a regional footwall promontory, the Peikang High. In total, six major tear …

Immigrants, Roma And Sinti Unveil The “National” In Italian Identity, Francesco Melfi Jun 2014

Immigrants, Roma And Sinti Unveil The “National” In Italian Identity, Francesco Melfi

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

This essay picks up a few threads in the ongoing debate on national identity in Italy. Immigration and the intertwining of cultures locally have stretched the contours of the nation state to a breaking point. As a result, the social self has become a sharply contested terrain between those who want to install a symbolic electronic fence around an imagined fatherland and those who want a more inclusive nation at home in a global world. After discussing the views of Amin Maalouf (2000), Alessandro Dal Lago (2009), Abdelmalek Sayad (1999) and Patrick Manning (2005) on national identity and migration in …

More Than A Tribesman: The New African Diasporan Identity, Stephen M. Magu Jun 2014

More Than A Tribesman: The New African Diasporan Identity, Stephen M. Magu

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Current global levels of immigration stand at about 300 million persons; of these, IFAD estimates that 30 million Africans are in the Diaspora. The contributions of diasporic Africans to their communities and to the cultural experiences of the United States are multimodal. To their domiciles, they contribute economically, empowering their families to become more active and less dependent on the state, while transmitting ideas about democracy and better government. At the same time, they contribute to their adopted homelands through social and cultural activities, cultural festivals and other indicators of cultural connectedness to their motherlands. The African diaspora of necessity …

The Body As Politic: Education And The Performance Art Of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Dana Cole Jun 2014

The Body As Politic: Education And The Performance Art Of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Dana Cole

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Art has been used as a tool in many fields as a method to tap into different ways of knowing and learning. It promotes creativity and individual expression by encouraging innovation and by opening up possibilities to different ways of expressing and experiencing. My work looks at the performance art of Guillermo Gómez-Peña as a form of public pedagogy using a/r/tography, an arts-based methodology, to illuminate way art it can be used to enhance the learning experience. This article examine the in-between spaces created in Gómez-Peña’s work as epistemological borderzones underscoring how borders come together in heterogeneity, contradiction, and flux …

Alternative Ireland: Modernism And Urban Space In Twentieth-Century Irish Literature, Kurt Patrick Voss-Hoynes Jun 2014

Alternative Ireland: Modernism And Urban Space In Twentieth-Century Irish Literature, Kurt Patrick Voss-Hoynes

Open Access Dissertations

Twentieth-century urban literature of Dublin and Belfast presents Ireland’s alternative modernity as one that is ecumenical, heterogeneous, unique, and autonomous. In “Alternative Ireland: Modernism and Urban Space in Twentieth-Century Irish Literature,” I look to modernism, rather than postmodernism, as the aesthetic mode by which twentieth-century Irish novelists sought to re-think contemporary Ireland’s relationship to history and imagine a modern Ireland alternative to either imperial or provincial modernity. I argue that an alternative Irish modernity articulates a mass culture that not only rejects the mythological past but also recognizes cultural, social, and political possibilities that have been silenced in a traditional …

Federalism, Diversity, Equality, And Article Iii Judges: Geography, Identity, And Bias, Sharon E. Rush Jun 2014

Federalism, Diversity, Equality, And Article Iii Judges: Geography, Identity, And Bias, Sharon E. Rush

UF Law Faculty Publications

Each individual has a background, and that background shapes the individual’s views about life, creating an inevitable form of bias referred to as “experiential bias.” Experiential bias is shaped by many identity traits, including, among others, race, sex, sexual orientation, religion and even geography. The geographic identity of state judges and their potential unfair experiential bias is the common justification for federal court diversity jurisdiction. But experiential bias is inescapable, affecting everyone who's ever had an experience, and is generally not unfair, as demonstrated by most studies regarding the "fairness" justification for diversity jurisdiction. More recently, Justice O’Connor connected racial …

The Application Of Boundary Layer Climatology And Urban Wind Power Potential In Smarter Electricity Networks, Keith Sunderland, Gerald Mills Jun 2014

The Application Of Boundary Layer Climatology And Urban Wind Power Potential In Smarter Electricity Networks, Keith Sunderland, Gerald Mills

Other resources

Smart electricity networks that address energy demand, efficiency and sustainability concerns are predicated on the ability to capture renewable energy in a controllable manner. Such networks will have a particular role in cities, where increasing demand is inevitable but this requires that primary (renewable) energy resources, including that of wind, is better understood. In this paper, the role of wind energy systems, as integral components of a smarter urban electricity network, is considered using a model of the urban wind resourcein Dublin, Ireland that is based on boundary layer theory and meteorological observations. This model is used in conjunction with …

Rural Environmental Concern: Effects Of Position, Partisanship And Place, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Thomas G. Safford, Forrest R. Stevens Jun 2014

Rural Environmental Concern: Effects Of Position, Partisanship And Place, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Thomas G. Safford, Forrest R. Stevens

Sociology

The social bases of environmental concern in rural America resemble those for the nation as a whole, but also reflect the influence of place. Some general place characteristics, such as rates of population growth or resource-industry employment, predict responses across a number of environmental issues. Other unique or distinctive aspects of local society and environment matter as well. We extend earlier work on both kinds of place effects, first by analyzing survey data from northeast Oregon. Results emphasize that “environmental concern” has several dimensions. Second, we contextualize the Oregon results using surveys from other regions. Analysis of an integrated dataset …
