Neomercantilism And Great-Power Energy Competition In Central Asia And The Caspian., Charles E. Ziegler, Rajan Menon Jul 2014

Neomercantilism And Great-Power Energy Competition In Central Asia And The Caspian., Charles E. Ziegler, Rajan Menon

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The neomercantilist energy policies of China and Russia contribute to what is largely a competitive relationship among all three great powers in Central Asia. While neomercantilist policies do not negate the possibility of cooperation and the development of norms, rules, and institutions designed to promote collective action, they certainly erect formidable barriers.

The Impact Of Institutional Diversity On Social Cohesion And Economic Productivity And Well-Being: A Macro-Level Analysis, Ashley B. Mikulyuk Jun 2014

The Impact Of Institutional Diversity On Social Cohesion And Economic Productivity And Well-Being: A Macro-Level Analysis, Ashley B. Mikulyuk

Open Access Dissertations

Issues of racial and ethnic separation and inequality are evidenced in both past and current patterns of segregation within and across major U.S. social institutions. In education, for example, between 1980 and 2010, the percentage of Black and Latino students enrolled in 90-100% minority schools increased from 33% and 29%, to 38% and 43%, respectively (Orfield, Kuscera, and Sigel-Hawley 2012). In housing, while most major U.S. cities have experienced a decline in Black-White residential segregation over the past forty years, the average concentration of Blacks in urban neighborhoods exceeds fifty percent; in suburban areas, the typical Black resident lives in …

Surface Water Inundation In The Boreal-Artic: Potential Impacts On Regional Methane Emissions, J. D. Watts, John S. Kimball, Annett Bartsch, Kyle C. Mcdonald Jun 2014

Surface Water Inundation In The Boreal-Artic: Potential Impacts On Regional Methane Emissions, J. D. Watts, John S. Kimball, Annett Bartsch, Kyle C. Mcdonald

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Northern wetlands may be vulnerable to increased carbon losses from methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, under current warming trends. However, the dynamic nature of open water inundation and wetting/drying patterns may constrain regional emissions, offsetting the potential magnitude of methane release. Here we conduct a satellite data driven model investigation of the combined effects of surface warming and moisture variability on high northern latitude (45° N) wetland CH4 emissions, by considering (1) sub-grid scale changes in fractional water inundation (Fw) at 15 day, monthly and annual intervals using 25 km resolution satellite microwave retrievals, and (2) …

Parenting Across The Social Ecology Facilitated By Information And Communications Technology: Implications For Research And Educational Design, Susan K. Walker, Jessie R. Rudi Jun 2014

Parenting Across The Social Ecology Facilitated By Information And Communications Technology: Implications For Research And Educational Design, Susan K. Walker, Jessie R. Rudi

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

To inform parenting research and aid educators seeking to deliver programs that support effective parenting, this study explored types of information and communications technology (ICT) used to fulfill childrearing goals. Mothers’ (N = 1,804) reports of ICT activity frequency were examined from data collected from an online survey. Results suggest that mothers’ ICT use for parenting is less frequent than general use in adulthood. Mothers employ ICT to fulfill parenting goals within and across five domains of the parenting social ecology: (a) parent development, (b) parent-child relationships, (c) child development, (d), family development, and (e) culture and community. Several types …

The Role Of Information And Communication Technologies In Global Sustainability: A Review, Wullianallur Raghupathi, Sarah Jinhui Wu, Viju Raghupathi

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

This article discusses ways in which ICTs contribute to several aspects of global sustainability. We examine how economic development, education, energy, environment, and transportation at the country level benefit from ICTs, along with several orders of effects on global sustainability. We also examine rebound effects. The anecdotal and theoretical research suggests that the impact of ICTs is felt primarily in sustainable development. We thus identify the key challenges to be addressed in bringing about an ICTs-based sustainable world. Studying the macro impacts of ICT investments can also guide countries in setting policy and making selective investments in ICTs that will …

Library Presentations

To support the University of Kentucky’s (UK) strategic plan, UK Libraries created a Director of International Programs (DIP) position in 2010 to plan and manage its international initiatives. In consultation of the UK administration, the DIP identified areas in which the library could make major contributions toward internationalization. The DIP has made significant progress in the areas by participating in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Passport to the World Program. Each year the College celebrates the cultural heritage of a country/region. The DIP and liaison librarians collaborate with faculty from different departments to annotate and showcase relevant materials from …

Cross-Hauling In Input-Output Tables: Comments On Charm, Randall Jackson Jun 2014

Cross-Hauling In Input-Output Tables: Comments On Charm, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This brief note draws further attention to cross-hauling in regional input-output table estimation, and specifically identifies conceptual issues associated with Kronenberg”s CHARM method for adjusting input-output regionalization methods. Despite the shortcomings of the CHARM approach as it now stands, this is a very important line of research. I believe that progress made on the CHARM method is encouraging, and hope that future work will resolve remaining issues.

Potential Of X-Band Images From High-Resolution Satellite Sar Sensors To Assess Growth And Yield In Paddy Rice, Yoshio Inoue, Eiji Sakaiya, Cuizhen Wang

Faculty Publications

The comprehensive relationship of backscattering coefficient (σ0) values from two current X-band SAR sensors (COSMO-SkyMed and TerraSAR-X) with canopy biophysical variables were investigated using the SAR images acquired at VV polarization and shallow incidence angles. The difference and consistency of the two sensors were also examined. The chrono-sequential change of σ0 in rice paddies during the transplanting season revealed that σ0 reached the value of nearby water surfaces a day before transplanting, and increased significantly just after transplanting event (3 dB). Despite a clear systematic shift (6.6 dB) between the two sensors, the differences in σ …

Finance For All: The Impact Of Financial Literacy Training In Compulsory Secondary Education In Spain, Laura Hospido, Ernesto Villanueva, Gema Zamarro Jun 2014

Finance For All: The Impact Of Financial Literacy Training In Compulsory Secondary Education In Spain, Laura Hospido, Ernesto Villanueva, Gema Zamarro

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

We estimate the impact on objective measures of financial literacy of a 10-hour financial education program among 15-year-old students in compulsory secondary schooling. We use a matched sample of students and teachers in Madrid and two different estimation strategies. Firstly, we use reweighting estimators to compare the performance in a test of financial knowledge of students in treatment and control schools. In another specification, we use school fixed-effect estimates of the effect of the course on changes in scores in tests of financial knowledge. The program increased treated students’ financial knowledge by between one-fourth and one-third of a standard deviation. …

Mandala And Charisma: The Federalist Potentials In Traditional Indonesian Political Culture, Yuhao Wen Jun 2014

Mandala And Charisma: The Federalist Potentials In Traditional Indonesian Political Culture, Yuhao Wen

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This research explores the federalist elements in the mandala (a graphic art pattern in Southeast Asia) and political charisma to discuss their constructive roles as traditional Indonesian political culture in federalizing Indonesia. Since August 17, 1945 when Sukarno declared the independence of the country in Jakarta, the newly–born Indonesia was also finalized as a centralized presidential republic. However, till today, societal diversities in Indonesian society are continuously increasing, the tendency of federalization, therefore, has never entirely faded away. Both the mandala and political charisma de facto have spontaneously generated their own initiatives for federalization since ancient times. Upon illustration of …

Volcanism-Induced Karst Landforms And Speleogenesis, In The Ankarana Plateau (Madagascar). Hypothesis And Preliminary Research, Eric Gilli Jun 2014

Volcanism-Induced Karst Landforms And Speleogenesis, In The Ankarana Plateau (Madagascar). Hypothesis And Preliminary Research, Eric Gilli

International Journal of Speleology

The Ankarana is a limestone plateau in the northern part of Madagascar, where a cave system, more than 120 km long, has been explored. The plateau is bordered by volcanoes and is cut across by several canyons. An analysis of surface landforms and caves suggests that the karst genesis was probably initiated by volcanism beneath an impervious cover. Volcanic bulging and magma intrusions may have favored a basalt-limestone assimilation process and metamorphism. The ascent of deep volcanic fluids (CO2 and SO2) from magma degassing and from limestone metamorphism, may explain the speleogenesis. Once denuded, the karst evolved …

Do Capital Tax Incentives Attract New Businesses? Evidence Across Industries From The New Markets Tax Credit, Kaitlyn M. Harger, Amanda Ross Jun 2014

Do Capital Tax Incentives Attract New Businesses? Evidence Across Industries From The New Markets Tax Credit, Kaitlyn M. Harger, Amanda Ross

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

All levels of government pursue policies to attract new businesses with the hope that these enterprises will create local economic growth. In this paper, we use the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) to determine the effect of a capital tax credit on where firms in different types of industries locate. When estimating the impact of the NMTC on business location, there are likely to be unobservable local characteristics that are correlated with where businesses choose to open that would cause OLS estimates to be biased. To control for the endogenous selection, we use a plausibly exogenous eligibility cutoff and compare …

Exhibition As Network, Network As Curator: Canonizing Art From “Latin America”, Daniel R. Quiles Jun 2014

Exhibition As Network, Network As Curator: Canonizing Art From “Latin America”, Daniel R. Quiles

Artl@s Bulletin

This article examines the network curatorial model popularized in the early 2000s by Héctor Olea and Mari Carmen Ramírez’s Heterotopías: medio siglo sin-lugar, 1918-1968. The network allows for a paradoxical rejection and reinforcement of Latin American art’s peripheral status, rendering the region simultaneously a bounded locality where new ideas emerge and a set of nodes in a global art ecology. Recent exhibitions such as the Red Conceptualismos del Sur’s Perder la forma humana (2012-2014) have adapted the network and its possibilities of visualization, while revising anew the geography and ontology of “Latin American art.”

The Geography Of Art In Communist Europe: Other Centralities, Other Universalities., Jerome Bazin Jun 2014

The Geography Of Art In Communist Europe: Other Centralities, Other Universalities., Jerome Bazin

Artl@s Bulletin

Through the analysis of one woodcut created in the GDR in 1973, the article offers a comprehensive approach to the spatial processes of creation, diffusion, and reception of an ordinary and modest image. In which spaces did actors (the artist, administrators, audience) place an image like this one? The main hypothesis is that realist art in a socialist context is characterised by two trends: on the one hand, the trend to embed art in a very local space, and on the other, the trend to universalise art in a communist way. The two divergent trends produced a special kind of …

To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux Jun 2014

To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux

Artl@s Bulletin

How to reconstruct artistic relationships among four European countries, situated on both sides of the Iron Curtain, during the period that commenced post-Stalin and lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall? This is one of the questions that faces the research program To Each His Own Reality: The notion of the real in the art of France, West Germany, East Germany and Poland between 1960 and 1989, which was initiated in January 2011. The paper discusses syntheses of the questions that the research team is facing, descriptions of its methodology, an analysis of preliminary results and what they allow …

Modernism, Seen From Prague, March 1937, Derek Sayer Jun 2014

Modernism, Seen From Prague, March 1937, Derek Sayer

Artl@s Bulletin

Focusing on the period 1890-1939, this paper explores exchanges between three generations of Prague artists and international—especially Parisian—avant-gardes. Documenting the extraordinary receptiveness of Prague to modernism, particularly in the applied arts, it argues for a thorough rethink of the conceptual geographies of art history.

At The Periphery Of Architectural History – Looking At Eastern Europe, Carmen Popescu Jun 2014

At The Periphery Of Architectural History – Looking At Eastern Europe, Carmen Popescu

Artl@s Bulletin

Long-time absent or only briefly mentioned for those examples fitting into the schemata, Eastern Europe has started to integrate in the past few years the mainstream discourse of architectural history. The reason of this inclusion is to be sought for not only in a certain globalization – both of the practice and of the academic discipline – but also in the mutations operated recently in the field of architectural historiography. However, in spite of the renewed context, Eastern Europe remains still marginal, both geographically – though globalization turned peripherality into a relative issue – and disciplinarily. The paper looks at …
