Expectations Of Peace: Documentation, Memorialization, And Construction Of The Archive In Northern Uganda, Matthew Sebastian
Expectations Of Peace: Documentation, Memorialization, And Construction Of The Archive In Northern Uganda, Matthew Sebastian
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This thesis considers how documentation and memorialization initiatives curate historical narratives in contemporary northern Uganda since the collapse of the Juba peace talks in 2008. Taking the collapse of political settlement as my starting point while staying attuned to the history of humanitarian activity in the region more broadly, I address how each of these initiatives produces knowledge about the war between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army and its aftermath despite the lack of a formal resolution or cessation of hostilities. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted annually between 2009 and 2014, I argue that sites of …
The Social Evolution Of Terror And Genocide Across Time And Geographic Space: Perspectives From Evolutionary Game Theory, Charles Anderton
The Social Evolution Of Terror And Genocide Across Time And Geographic Space: Perspectives From Evolutionary Game Theory, Charles Anderton
Economics Department Working Papers
This article uses evolutionary game theory to reveal the interpersonal and geographic characteristics of a society that make it vulnerable to a conquest from within by terrorist organizations and genocide architects. Under conditions identified in the space-less version of the model, entrepreneurs of violence can create the social metamorphosis of a peaceful people group into one that supports or does not resist violence against an out-group. The model is extended into geographic space by analyzing interactions among peaceful and aggressive phenotypes in Moore and von Neumann neighborhoods. The model also reveals policy interventions in which the social evolution of aggression …
Judicial Selection In The State Of Missouri: Continuing Controversies, Rebekkah Stuteville
Judicial Selection In The State Of Missouri: Continuing Controversies, Rebekkah Stuteville
Missouri Policy Journal
Since its admission to the union in 1821, Missouri has been a microcosm of the national developments and debates that surround the issue of judicial selection. Missouri was the first state to use all three of the most common methods of judicial selection—political appointments, contested elections, and merit selection.1 Because of the state’s experience, the history of judicial selection and the controversies surrounding judicial selection in Missouri provide insight into broader national trends. This article explores the history of judicial selection and the controversies over the various selection methods in the state of Missouri, with an emphasis on the debate …

Governance And Economic Growth: Interpretations For Mena Countries, Noha Emara, Eric Jhonsa
Governance And Economic Growth: Interpretations For Mena Countries, Noha Emara, Eric Jhonsa
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
Using Two-stage Least Square (TSLS) regression for cross-sectional observations of 197 countries for the year 2009, the study estimates the impact of the improvement in the quality of governance on per capita income and the increase in per capita income on the quality of governance. Following Kaufman and Kraay (2002) methodology, the results suggest a positive, strong statistically significant causation from quality of governance to per capita income. In addition, the results suggest a positive causation from per capita income to quality of governance. The estimation results are used to interpret the relationship between governance and growth for 22 MENA …

Before There Was Pinterest: Textile Study Rooms In North American “Art” Museums, Sarah Fee
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This paper examines the roots and future of textile museum collections, display and curation in North America. The first half looks back, to the origins of dedicated textile galleries, museums, museum departments, and curators, and examines why this one medium was systematically singled out for special attention in early museums, who the early audiences were, and the methods for communicating textile collections. The history of textile curation and display at the Royal Ontario Museum, of Toronto, Canada, founded in 1914 as an encyclopedic museum, is examined as a fascinating and classic case study in point. The second part of the …

The Deterrence Effects Of Vicarious Punishments On Corporate Financial Fraud, Daphne W. Yiu, Yuehua Xu, William P. Wan
The Deterrence Effects Of Vicarious Punishments On Corporate Financial Fraud, Daphne W. Yiu, Yuehua Xu, William P. Wan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study extends the research on corporate financial fraud by developing a new perspective on the deterrence effects of vicarious punishments premised on social learning theory. We posit that firms vicariously learn about punishments from their peers by picking up modeling cues, environmental cues, and social cues in the inhibitive learning process, thus being deterred from committing future fraudulence. Using a matched sample of 604 observations of Chinese listed firms between 2002 and 2008, our findings show that an observing firm is deterred from committing fraud if the peers in its industry are caught and punished. We further find that …

The Lord Is There: Christian Views Of The Temple In The First Century Ad, Jonathan Wells
The Lord Is There: Christian Views Of The Temple In The First Century Ad, Jonathan Wells
Masters Theses
During the first century, Yeshua (Jesus) and the original Christians viewed the temple as God's dwelling place on earth. Informed by the Hebrew Bible, which they saw as the Holy Scriptures, they continued to hold the temple in high regard. The writings of the New Testament display the thoughts of the first Christians and the teachings of Yeshua concerning their understanding of the Jerusalem temple. This study explores the views of the temple in the New Testament and other Christian writings from the first century to demonstrate that most Christians and especially the writings of the New Testament continue to …

Hot For Transit? Transit’S Experience Of High-Occupancy Toll Lanes, Gregory L. Newmark
Hot For Transit? Transit’S Experience Of High-Occupancy Toll Lanes, Gregory L. Newmark
Journal of Public Transportation
As more and more regions seek to implement high-occupancy toll or HOT lanes, more and more transit agencies seek knowledge to take advantage of this new infrastructure opportunity. Unfortunately, as is often the case with the rapid diffusion of a new technology, little information is available to guide policy. This research addresses the need for knowledge on the integration of transit with HOT lanes. It first identifies the salient elements of HOT lanes for transit agencies and then systematically compares these features across all 12 HOT lane facilities operating in the United States at the start of 2012. This paper …

The Effect Of Density And Trip-Chaining On The Interaction Between Urban Form And Transit Demand, Sisinnio Concas, Joseph S. Desalvo
Journal of Public Transportation
It is unclear whether policies designed to reduce auto and increase transit usage achieve their objective. Evidence is mixed because most empirical research on these policies use ad hoc specifications, whereas our models are drawn from economic theory. Three models of increasing generality show how endogenizing relevant variables changes results obtained by others. The theoretical hypotheses are empirically tested using a dataset that integrates travel and land use. Our main findings are (1) population density has a small impact on transit demand, which decreases when residential location is endogenous; (2) households living farther from work use less transit, a result …

Analysis Of Visitor Satisfaction With Public Transport In Munich, Diem-Trinh Le-Klähn, C. Michael Hall, Regine Gerike
Journal of Public Transportation
This study investigates the use of public transport by visitors in the city of Munich, Germany. It seeks to understand how visitors perceive public transport services and which factors influence their level of satisfaction. Data were collected from a survey in April and May 2012 with a random sample at selected tourist sites in Munich. Factor analysis resulted in four different service dimensions—traveling comfort, service quality, accessibility and additional features. Visitors were found to be generally satisfied with public transport services in Munich, and their perceptions are independent from most factors.
Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds As Impacted By El Nino And Climate Change, Brian Seth Putman
Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds As Impacted By El Nino And Climate Change, Brian Seth Putman
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Noteworthy species endemic to the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador are two flightless birds, the Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) and Flightless Cormorant (Phalacrocrax harrisi). Both adapted increased swimming ability at the cost of flight. This however has limited their ability to find richer feeding grounds in times of low resource availability, or to escape potential predators. Their population numbers, though small, were stable. Stress on this stability has increased since human arrival. Various invasive species from pets, farm animals and rats to even mosquito vectors of avian disease accompanied humans. . El Nino Southern Oscillation or ENSO …

A Content Analysis Of Backpage.Com Advertisements In Louisville, Kentucky, Theresa C. Hayden
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 6th (2014)
Backpage.com and Craigslist are replacing the street corner as a crime source for buying and selling of sex. “To reduce commercial sexual exploitation and enforce existing trafficking laws, communities must first recognize the extent of the problem within their local area (Janson, Mann, Marro, & Matvey, 2013, 99). In a population density study conducted in 15 major U. S. cities, it was found that males over 18 years of age who buy sex online ranged from 0.6% in San Francisco to 21.4% in Houston (Roe-Sepoqitz, Hickle, Gallagher, Smith, & Hedberg, 2013). Researchers in the Greater Cincinnati area found a high …

The Social And Economic Implications Of Human Trafficking In Nigeria: Naptip In Focus, Eunice I. Anuforom
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 6th (2014)
Human trafficking is globally recognized as a modern day slavery with multifarious negative socio-economic, legal and health implications. Besides drugs trafficking and gun running, human trafficking has become a lucrative business globally and yields an estimated US$32 million annually. Traffickers trade on human lives, subject them to gory and traumatic experiences in order to make profits. Human trafficking is therefore the worst form of human rights violations and a gender based violence against female who constitute the majority of the victims in the country. Regrettably, Nigeria occupies the ignoble position of a source, transit and destination country for trafficking. In …

Institutional Settings In A Rice Cluster: Assessing The Effects Of Social Capital On Learning In Malaysia, B.K. Ng, A.S. Magli, C.Y. Wong, V.C. Govinda
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Based on a case study of the Sekinchan rice cluster in Malaysia, this paper provides empirical evidence demonstrating that geographic proximity goes hand-in-hand with social capital. The paper argues that the study of social capital within a geographic dimension (such as Regional Innovation Systems and clusters) needs to take place in its institutional context. Thus, agricultural cluster development policies must address the 'soft' elements of the cluster in fostering cooperative relationships and "social contracts" among the cluster actors. Findings also indicate that the cluster's learning processes take place mainly in the form of informal learning and learning by doing, in …
Integrating Livability Principles Into Transit Planning: Screening Chicago Bus Rapid Transit Opportunities, Joshua K. Anderson, Josh Ellis
Integrating Livability Principles Into Transit Planning: Screening Chicago Bus Rapid Transit Opportunities, Joshua K. Anderson, Josh Ellis
Journal of Public Transportation
Pilot Chicago Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes proposed in 2008 were impractical to build, did not meet Institute for Transportation and Development Policy defined “gold standard” BRT, and were selected without considering the Livability Principles guiding investment by the U.S. government. Streets incompatible with BRT and not meeting basic constructability standards were eliminated. The remaining contiguous street sections were scored on the weighted performance of 14 quantitative proxies for the Livability Principles. Transit connectivity considerations further refined the pool to produce potential BRT routes. For discussion purposes, these routes were organized into a hypothetical BRT network to complement the existing …

Interview with Professor Jean Nicod is the shortest in the series of interviews published in Acta Carsologica. His answers are short and precise, as if they were. He is stingy with words, professor Nicod is devoted to the tradi- tional means of communication: he does not use internet and does not pay particular attention to photos. However, he sent us a map of Mediterranean karst, which is published here as an illustration of his work and his approach to karst studies. The interview as is, was completed two weeks before prof. Nicod's ninetieth birthday. Throughout his life he has demonstrated …

Relative Importance Of Environmental, Geographic, And Spatial Variables On Zooplankton Metacommunities, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake
Relative Importance Of Environmental, Geographic, And Spatial Variables On Zooplankton Metacommunities, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake
Faculty Publications
© 2014 Dallas and Drake. Understanding the factors responsible for structuring ecological communities is a central goal in community ecology. Previous work has focused on determining the relative roles of two classes of variables (e.g., spatial and environmental) on community composition. However, this approach may ignore the disproportionate impact of variables within classes, and is often confounded by spatial autocorrelation leading to collinearity among variables of different classes. Here, we combine pattern-based metacommunity and machine learning analyses to characterize metacommunity structure of zooplankton from lakes in the northeast United States and to identify environmental, spatial, and geographic covariates associated with …

Exhibition Handlist, Kathleen M. Webb
Supplemental Media
In preparing for Imprints and Impressions, we ran across many interesting words that have fallen out of the general lexicon. With this booklet, we have brought one back: handlist. Dean Kathleen Webb ran across it in a 1944 booklet from the J. Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City. Though the word no longer appears in most new dictionaries, it’s still in the Oxford English Dictionary:
A list of a particular type or category of things, presented in a readily consultable form; esp. a list of the books or manuscripts in a particular place, on a particular subject, etc.; …
