Island Specialists: Shared Flora Of The Alta And Baja California Pacific Islands, Sarah E. Ratay, Sula E. Vanderplank, Benjamin T. Wilder

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

The floristic connection between the mediterranean region of Baja California and the Pacific islands of Alta and Baja California provides insight into the history and origin of the California Floristic Province. We present updated species lists for all California Floristic Province islands and demonstrate the disjunct distributions of 26 taxa between the Baja California and the California Channel Islands. These 26 plant taxa are found among the 16 Pacific islands without occurring on the intervening mainland of Alta California. Separate species lists for each island group (8 California Channel Islands and 8 Baja California Islands) were compiled. These lists were …

Phylogeny Of Courtship And Male-Male Combat Behavior In Snakes, Phil Senter, Shannon M. Harris, Danielle L. Kent Sep 2014

Phylogeny Of Courtship And Male-Male Combat Behavior In Snakes, Phil Senter, Shannon M. Harris, Danielle L. Kent

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Methodology/Principal Findings: From the literature on courtship and male-male combat in snakes we chose 33 behaviors to analyze. We plotted the 33 behaviors onto a phylogenetic tree to determine whether phylogenetic patterns were discernible. We found that phylogenetic patterns are discernible for some behaviors but not for others. For behaviors with discernible phylogenetic patterns, we used the fossil record to determine minimum ages for the addition of each behavior to the courtship and combat behavioral repertoire of each snake clade.

Shallow Water Surface Gravity Wave Imaging, Spectra And Their Use In Shallow Water Dredging Operations, Charles R. Bostater, Bingyu Yang Sep 2014

Shallow Water Surface Gravity Wave Imaging, Spectra And Their Use In Shallow Water Dredging Operations, Charles R. Bostater, Bingyu Yang

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Imaging of shallow waters using high resolution video imagery is described. Common to mono, stereo and trinocular imaging approaches from ground and airborne platforms is the need to validate the surface water wave field measurements, particularly the amplitude and specular reflectance of water surface small gravity waves. A technique for calibration and validation of water surface gravity wave field energy spectra is described. Results demonstrate the value of video imagery where water level staff gauges with approximately with 0.5 cm wave height accuracy are easily sensed using high definition videography. Essentially, a staff gauge placed in shallow water constructed from …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is a highly invasive and polyphagous pest of global incidence. The fundamental hypothesis of the present study was that the temperature variations due to global climate change may affect seriously the future distribution and abundance of P. solenopsis, which might further aggravate the crop yield losses. We employed a temperature-based phenology model of P. solenopsis in a geographic information system for mapping population growth potentials of P. solenopsis. The three risk indices viz., establishment risk index, generation index and activity index were computed using interpolated temperature data from worldclim database for current (2000) …

The National Commission On Education Excellence And Equity: Hypotheses About Movement Building, Christopher Edley Jr. Sep 2014

The National Commission On Education Excellence And Equity: Hypotheses About Movement Building, Christopher Edley Jr.

New England Journal of Public Policy

In 2013, the congressionally chartered national Commission on Education Equity and Excellence issued unanimous recommendations for P–12 policy changes at the federal, state, and local levels. This remarkably broad consensus, with unusual pragmatism and concreteness, is comprehensive in its scope and predominantly research based. As a clarion call and reform strategy, the commission report, For Each and Every Child, is a successor to A Nation at Risk (1983); the commission’s grand if not grandiose intention was to provide a framework for the next decade or more of nationwide policy struggle. This article, after briefly summarizing the recommendations, focuses on …

Urban Planning Laws And Legislation And Their Impact On The Spatial Expansion Of Cities, Diwaniyah City As A Model, Safaa Jassim Al-Dulaimi Sep 2014

Urban Planning Laws And Legislation And Their Impact On The Spatial Expansion Of Cities, Diwaniyah City As A Model, Safaa Jassim Al-Dulaimi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Urban studies, in its broadest sense, has become a subject of interest for researchers from various disciplines such as geography, sociology, economics, engineering, and planning. This is due to the comprehensive nature of the topics these disciplines address, which now form the core of contemporary urban studies. Legislation, in most countries of the world, serves as the primary mechanism for effecting social, economic, and urban changes. It is the tool by which governments and parliaments can respond to the evolving needs of their societies. Legislation regulates and governs the relationships between individuals and groups, between rulers and the ruled, and …

Transforming Public Education: The Need For An Educational Justice Movement, Mark R. Warren Sep 2014

Transforming Public Education: The Need For An Educational Justice Movement, Mark R. Warren

New England Journal of Public Policy

Nearly fifteen years after the passage of No Child Left Behind, the failures of our educational system with regard to low-income children of color remain profound. Traditional reform efforts have sought improvements solely within the confines of the school system, failing to realize how deeply educational failure is part of and linked to broader structures of poverty and racism. A social movement that creates political and cultural change is necessary to transform the racial inequities in public education itself and to connect this transformational effort to a larger movement to combat poverty and racism. The seeds of a new educational …

Assessing The Value Of The Openorbiter Program's Research Experience For Undergraduates, Jeremy Straub, David Whalen, Ronald Marsh Sep 2014

Assessing The Value Of The Openorbiter Program's Research Experience For Undergraduates, Jeremy Straub, David Whalen, Ronald Marsh

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This article presents an assessment of the benefits gained by undergraduate students who participated in the OpenOrbiter Small Spacecraft Development Initiative. It provides an overview of the program and its learning objectives, as they apply to undergraduate students. It compares the learning impact between students who participated and those who assumed leadership roles. Qualitative assessment with regard to benefits is also discussed. The article extrapolates from these results to identify program elements that were particularly instrumental in delivering the positive benefits discussed. Finally, future work is discussed.

Religious Services, Their Spatial Distribution And Functional Efficiency In The City Of Basra, Salman Mughamis Aboud Sep 2014

Religious Services, Their Spatial Distribution And Functional Efficiency In The City Of Basra, Salman Mughamis Aboud

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This study focused on the spatial distribution and functional efficiency of religious services in the city of Basra. Religious services encompassed a range of institutions, including mosques, grand mosques, Shia religious centers, churches, and cemeteries. These institutions have existed since the city's founding, as they have always been an integral part of the community. Basra contained 302 religious institutions; however, their number and the area they occupy were not systematically planned or distributed across the city's various districts. These included 278 mosques (including grand mosques, regular mosques, and Shia religious centers), 15 churches, and 9 cemeteries. The total area occupied …
