The Prevalence Of Lead Fragments From Shotgun Slugs/Muzzleoader Bullets In Ground Venision Meant For Human Consumption, Genevieve Alexander, Given Harper, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
Recent studies have shown that lead shotgun slugs and muzzleloader bullets often fragment inside game animals. The majority of ammunition types used in firearms that are permitted by the State of Illinois for hunting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) contain lead, which is toxic to both humans and animals that scavenge deer carcasses. Although many studies have examined the impact of lead bullet fragmentation in game animals from high powered rifles, few studies have documented the presence of lead fragments from shotgun slugs and muzzleloader bullets in ground venison meant for human consumption in Illinois. In this study, ground …

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are a wide ranging, potentially keystone predator species that display a variety of horizontal movement patterns, making use of coastal and pelagic waters. Far less, however, is known about their vertical movements and use of the water column. We used pop-up satellite archival tags with two data sampling rates (high rate and standard rate tags) to investigate the vertical habitat use and diving behavior of tiger sharks tagged on the Puerto Rico–Virgin Islands platform and off Bermuda between 2008 and 2009. Useable data were received from nine of 14 sharks tagged, tracked over a …

Sustainability Reporting: An Evaluation Of The Sasb Framework, Tess Barker
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Businesses today face more performance risks than ever before. Progressively unjust social spheres, severe environmental disruptions, and corporate governance scandals are just a few issues afflicting the modern business environment. The demand is high for corporate disclosure of these and other sustainability matters. Currently, businesses are not subject to any mandatory sustainability reporting requirements. A number of sustainability reporting frameworks have therefore emerged to help businesses report on sustainability performance. The US nonprofit Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) offers one such framework. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the SASB’s framework and provisional standards for its ability to …
Environmental Justice & Hidroaysén: Pristine Waters To Power Santiago, Multinational Mining Interests In Chile, David Schaad
Environmental Justice & Hidroaysén: Pristine Waters To Power Santiago, Multinational Mining Interests In Chile, David Schaad
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
On May 9, 2011, the Chilean national government under President Sebastián Piñera approved HidroAysén, a controversial hydroelectric megaproject to be constructed in the Aysén region of southern Chile. With HidroAysén expected to flood 5,900 hectares (15,000 acres) of ecologically unique natural reserves and displace local indigenous and working class people, its development raises major environmental justice concerns among Chileans and the international community. The project stalled in 2012 and was placed on long-term hold due to widespread public protests in which tens of thousands of Chileans took to the streets unified by the motto “Patagonia Sin Represas” (Patagonia Without Dams). …

Combined Manipulation Of Leaf Litter And Microbial Larvicide Enhances Local Control Of Culex Mosquitoes, Katie Bellile
Combined Manipulation Of Leaf Litter And Microbial Larvicide Enhances Local Control Of Culex Mosquitoes, Katie Bellile
UROP Posters
Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is a naturally occurring insect pathogen widely used as a microbial larvicide for mosquito control. The toxicity of Bti is specific to mosquitoes and a few other dipterans. It is applied to aquatic habitats colonized by mosquitoes and produces proteins that paralyze the digestive system of larvae that consume it. While Bti is an effective larvicide, it can also deter oviposition by female mosquitoes. Thus, reduced production of adult mosquitoes at the local (i.e., pond) scale may reflect both reduced colonization and reduced larval survival. It is important to distinguish between these mechanisms. While deterring oviposition …

This brief reports the results of a mail survey of forest landowners in northeastern Oregon conducted in the fall of 2012 by the Communities and Forests in Oregon (CAFOR) Project at the University of Colorado and the University of New Hampshire in cooperation with Oregon State University College of Forestry Extension. The mail survey--a follow-up to a telephone survey conducted for the counties of Baker, Union, and Wallowa in the fall of 2011 -was administered to understand who constituted forest landowners in these three coun¬ties and their perceptions about forest management on both public and private land, as well as …

Sex Ratio Bias And Extinction Risk In An Isolated Population Of Tuatara (Sphenodon Punctatus), Kristine L. Grayson, Nicola J. Mitchell, Joanne M. Monks, Susan N. Keall, Joanna N. Wilson, Nicola J. Nelson
Biology Faculty Publications
Understanding the mechanisms underlying population declines is critical for preventing the extinction of endangered populations. Positive feedbacks can hasten the process of collapse and create an ‘extinction vortex,’ particularly in small, isolated populations. We provide a case study of a male-biased sex ratio creating the conditions for extinction in a natural population of tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) on North Brother Island in the Cook Strait of New Zealand. We combine data from long term mark-recapture surveys, updated model estimates of hatchling sex ratio, and population viability modeling to measure the impacts of sex ratio skew. Results from the mark-recapture …

Factors Influencing Personality In Prothonotary Warbler Nestlings?, Jenna Dodson
Factors Influencing Personality In Prothonotary Warbler Nestlings?, Jenna Dodson
UROP Posters
Animal personality is defined as consistent expressions of an individual’s behavior when exposed to stressful conditions. Avian nestling personality traits can be determined through simple stress handling tests that measure breath rate and docility. Individuals with lower measures tend to be more bold and aggressive adults, traits that are correlated with increased fitness. Other developmental factors that correlate with increased fitness include egg size, parental provisioning rates, and body condition. The objective of this project was to determine if there is a relationship between handling stress and: egg size and parental provisioning in the migratory songbird, Prothonotary warbler (PROW). This …

Solvent Dependent Molecular Mechanics: A Case Study Using Type I Collagen, Heather Harper
Solvent Dependent Molecular Mechanics: A Case Study Using Type I Collagen, Heather Harper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Being the most abundant protein in the body, by mass, type I collagen provides the building blocks for tissues such as bone, extra-cellular matrix, tendons, cornea, etc[1-3]. The ability of a single protein to create structures with such various mechanical properties is not fully understood. Before one can engineer and assemble a complex tissue, such as cornea, the mechanisms underlying the formation and assembly, mechanical properties, and structure must be investigated and quantified. The work presented herein contains an extensive study of Type I collagen from the molecular to the tissue level.
The engineering of collagenous tissues that mimic the …
