Thoreau's A Week, Religion As Preservative Care: Opposing The Christian Doctrine Of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, And A Religion Of Subjugation, Robert Michael Ruehl
Thoreau's A Week, Religion As Preservative Care: Opposing The Christian Doctrine Of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, And A Religion Of Subjugation, Robert Michael Ruehl
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation argues for a rereading of Henry David Thoreau's A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849) as "Transcendental scripture writing." By placing his book in this genre, Thoreau's religious thinking comes to the fore. His book becomes a contextualized pilgrimage addressing three levels of human existence in the religious realm: (1) where we have been and are now, (2) where we could be, and (3) how to reach that next, better self with more intimate, liberative relationships with others. As he addresses human limitations and his hope for better human and nonhuman relationships, Thoreau articulates a religion …

Rebalancing Current Limitations Periods To Reflect A Society That Values Its Members As Much As Their Money, Daniel M. Isaacs
Rebalancing Current Limitations Periods To Reflect A Society That Values Its Members As Much As Their Money, Daniel M. Isaacs
Stetson Law Review
Rarely do we question the relative justice of our most familiar practices. Questioning the propriety of the basic rules we use to control access to our system of justice requires that we look at our values as individuals and as a society. This article examines those values through the lens of statutes of limitations, a process that yields useful information because statutes of limitations control the extent to which people have access to public power to enforce societal norms and private obligations. This article demonstrates that there is no reasoned basis for the current practice of applying different limitations periods …

The Power To Envision Change: Art As Environmental Activism, Sonja Raven Favaloro
The Power To Envision Change: Art As Environmental Activism, Sonja Raven Favaloro
Standard Theses
How do visual and narrative-based approaches to communicating environmental messages inspire action and further awareness? This thesis investigates three artists whose work tells environmental stories in various ways: activists from the Beehive Design Collective, photographer Chris Jordan, and activist/performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph. These artists produce challenging, engaging, emotionally vital art that allows urgent environmental messages to sink in to peoples’ minds and hearts in a different way than scientific information. At this time when our planet is in ever-increasing environmental danger and the need for action becomes ever greater, how we perceive our relation to the issues facing us will …

Long-Term Impacts And Outcomes: Sit Study Abroad, Marianne Mcgarrity
Capstone Collection
This capstone reports on the results of the SIT Study Abroad Long-Term Impacts and Outcomes survey, a research project designed to investigate how alumni would self-report impacts of their study abroad experience with regard to academic, personal, and professional outcomes. The principal question the study sought to answer was “How and to what extent do SIT Study Abroad programs impact alumni in the long term?” This paper focuses largely on the career outcomes of the alumni who participated in this research. A large percentage of SIT Study Abroad alumni report that impacts to their career choices were significant and that …

Reduction Of Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emissions To Mitigate Climate Change Impacts, Mary Snow, Richard Snow
Reduction Of Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emissions To Mitigate Climate Change Impacts, Mary Snow, Richard Snow
Publications
Weather affects almost all modes of transportation in a modern society, and likewise, transportation has an enormous impact on the weather. Transportation greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) impact climate change, which impacts transportation in return. Reduction of transportation impacts on climate change can mitigate the reverse climate change impacts on transportation. This paper examines the relationship between transportation and climate change and establishes prospective solutions to reduce transportation greenhouse gas emission impacts on climate change and mitigate the reverse climate change impacts on transportation.

PCB signatures can be used for source identification, exposure studies, age dating and bio-monitoring. This study uses comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-ToFMS) to produce a PCB signature comprised of over 80 PCBs for individual Leach's storm petrels (Oceanodroma leucorhoa). The Leach's storm petrel is a relatively small, elusive, understudied pelagic bird, which only returns to remote islands under darkness during the breeding season. Samples were obtained from 25 Leach's storm petrels found dead in Canada and the UK following storm events in 2006 and 2009. Tissue samples were extracted and analysed by GCxGC-ToFMS and results showed …

Farming: It's Not Just For Farmers Anymore, Jennifer Schmidt
Pomona Senior Theses
Agricultural education, originally the province of land grant institutions, has recently entered the liberal arts curriculum. This represents a profound shift from the origins of agricultural education, when it was intended primarily as vocational training for future farmers, and has important implications for the future of the American food system. The first chapter of this thesis addresses the history of agricultural education: what was it originally like, and why did it come to be heavily criticized in the late twentieth century? Formal agricultural education changed significantly in response to these criticisms, making it more environmentally sustainable and bringing it into …

Observable Effects Of Attention, Posture, Ergonomics And Movement In The Classroom, Joanne Healy
Observable Effects Of Attention, Posture, Ergonomics And Movement In The Classroom, Joanne Healy
Other
Two studies related to student attention, posture, school ergonomics, student behavior (leaning, standing up, and moving), and learning engagement were conducted in Alaska. The Children's Postural Improvement Study (CPIS) looked at the observable effects of two interventions on attention. In the Classroom Environmental Study (CES) a baseline ergonomic survey compared observed student behavior and classroom arrangements. The purpose of the CPIS was to investigate the effects of a postural education program, consisting of five 30-minute instructional sessions, as compared to a nutritional intervention at two elementary schools and its effect on attention. Three quantitative tools measured attention, the post-Partial Vanderbilt …
Identifying Adopters Of Best Management Practices Within Mississippi Beef Producers And The Reasons For Non-Adoption, M Scott Cagle
Identifying Adopters Of Best Management Practices Within Mississippi Beef Producers And The Reasons For Non-Adoption, M Scott Cagle
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the Mississippi State University Extension Service (MSU-ES) is to improve the quality of life for all Mississippians. One specific group that agricultural change agents work with at the county level is beef producers. Grazing lands have received much attention over the last few years regarding environmental concerns and Best Management Practices (BMPs) for beef cattle operations. The adoption of these practices was voluntary during the time this study was conducted, however; adoption was highly encouraged by the MSU-ES and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). By knowing the level of adoption of BMPs that Mississippi beef producers …

Lichens In Forest Park And Nitrogenous Air Pollution, Wes Hanson, Meghan Lockwood, Morgan Yarber
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Lichens have been shown to be useful bioindicators for determining levels of nitrogen deposition related to air pollution. Preliminary lichen surveys in Forest Park in 2011 and 2012 revealed the presence of lichen species associated with high levels of nitrogenous pollution. The summer of 2013, we conducted lichen surveys at 25 permanent research sites that had been set up in Forest Park and the Ancient Forest Preserve in 1993. The majority of the lichens we collected at every site were classified as indicative of worst, poor, or fair air quality, with few lichens found that would indicate good or best …

Twenty Years Of Change In The Tree Community In Forest Park, Meghan Lockwood, Wes Hanson, Morgan Yarber
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
In 1993, 24 permanent sites were randomly located in Forest Park with one additional site in the Ancient Forest Preserve. Three 250-meter-square quadrats were randomly located at each site. All trees within each quadrat were identified to species, and the dbh (diameter at breast height) of each tree was measured. Saplings were members of tree species less than 10 cm in diameter and saplings were members of tree species that were less than 2 meters in height; basal diameter was measured for saplings. Data were initially collected in 1993. Measurements were repeated in 2003 and 2013 at the same locations …
