Whose Food?: A Multi-Sited Ethnographic Analysis Of Sarasota Farmers Markets, Charles Gillig Jan 2014

Whose Food?: A Multi-Sited Ethnographic Analysis Of Sarasota Farmers Markets, Charles Gillig

Theses & ETDs

As food markets have grown increasingly globalized and entrenched within the neoliberal, capitalist system of the 21st century, the production, sale and consumption of locally grown food has presented itself as a viable alternative to what many view as the depravity of modern industrial agriculture. Farmers markets traditionally represent the intersection of the local agricultural system with consumers interested in supporting various aspects of locally grown food, though this classical vision is not always the norm today. Through participant observation and interviews with managers, organizers, farmers, non-farmer vendors, and customers, this thesis analyzes two farmers markets of differing size and …

The Social Construction Of The Electric Car: An Environmental Perspective, Tyler Scott Neumann Jan 2014

The Social Construction Of The Electric Car: An Environmental Perspective, Tyler Scott Neumann

Theses & ETDs

This thesis uses a Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) approach to build a multidirectional model of the development of the electric car. This analysis produces a constructivist theory for the development of the electric car today. There are many environmental themes present throughout this thesis, and a critical analysis of the environmental impacts of electric cars. The product of this analysis is the identification of all the perceived issues, relative to individual social groups, with the electric car, and provides solutions to those problems. The challenge of this paper, and of the SCOT framework, is to relate the solutions provided …

Big Building: The Political Economy Of Place And Displacement In Coconut Grove Florida, Daniel Ducassi Jan 2014

Big Building: The Political Economy Of Place And Displacement In Coconut Grove Florida, Daniel Ducassi

Theses & ETDs

The physical construction of urban space has a concrete impact on the lives of those who inhabit it. However, the development and redevelopment of some neighborhoods has differed from that of others, and the disparity in the qualities and environment of constructed urban space is closely intertwined with the social relations of a particular community. This thesis explores the processes of redevelopment in the historically segregated neighborhood of Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida. It reviews the development history of the neighborhood, as well as recent development issues that serve as focal points of interaction between residents, developers and municipal government. …

Restoration By Defecation: Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment Via Bird Guano On Seagrass Propeller Scar Healing Times, Kelsey Hunt-Dolon Jan 2014

Restoration By Defecation: Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment Via Bird Guano On Seagrass Propeller Scar Healing Times, Kelsey Hunt-Dolon

Theses & ETDs

Seagrass beds provide many ecological services, such as diminishing shoreline erosion by dampening wave and carbon sequestration. Propeller scaring caused by careless boaters can inflict significant damage to seagrass ecosystems. Scars erode and when an area becomes heavily scared the integrity of the seagrass bed is threatened and large areas of grass can be lost. Studies in the Florida Keys and elsewhere found that when bird stakes, PVC perches, were placed along the length of propeller scars the healing time was greatly reduced. A similar effect should be seen around bird rookery islands, which provide nutrient inputs of phosphorus (P) …

“You Can’T Get There From Here:” Determining Accessibility To Active Transportation In Three Chicago, Illinois Neighborhoods, Taylor Lucas Filaroski Jan 2014

“You Can’T Get There From Here:” Determining Accessibility To Active Transportation In Three Chicago, Illinois Neighborhoods, Taylor Lucas Filaroski

Theses & ETDs

Transportation literature tends to fall into either one of two topics: “active” transportation – which is defined as walking, biking, or public transportation use – and its use among higher income groups; and transportation disadvantaged (TD) groups, which are typically those too young, too old, too poor, or too disabled to drive. This thesis aims to bridge the gap in the literature between these two topics by examining both social and spatial components of active transportation use and accessibility among both privileged and TD populations. This study used GIS analysis and personal observation to examine the differences in active transportation …

Gardens As Educational Tools In Urban Public Schools, Michelle Diane Wheat Jan 2014

Gardens As Educational Tools In Urban Public Schools, Michelle Diane Wheat

Theses & ETDs

Urban public school education has become increasingly decontextualized from the natural world over time. This causes a division within students that impacts how they learn, what they learn, and their mental health. Children's knowledge is increasingly devoid of environmental awareness. In addition ADHD, depression, and obesity have been linked to this separation. These problems are exacerbated by a culture of standardized tests motivated by financial concerns, and the gearing of education toward career preparation. Children learn to fear nature and reap none of the benefits that immersion in nature can foster. School gardens, especially in urban areas, can provide a …

Effects Of Dissolved And Dietary Microcystin On Clearance Rates Of Wedge Clams (Rangia Cuneata) In The Tidal Fresh James River, Spencer Tassone, Paul Bukaveckas, Joe Wood Jan 2014

Effects Of Dissolved And Dietary Microcystin On Clearance Rates Of Wedge Clams (Rangia Cuneata) In The Tidal Fresh James River, Spencer Tassone, Paul Bukaveckas, Joe Wood

UROP Posters

Benthic filter feeders are important organisms in estuaries due to their ability to remove algal and non-algal particulate matter from the water column. Microcystin (MC) is a cyanotoxin that is known to have adverse effects on diverse consumers, though its effects on benthic filter-feeders are not well-studied. In this study, we examine the effects of microcystin on the filtering activities of Rangia cuneata, a common and often dominant filter-feeder in tidal freshwaters. Clams and seston obtained from the James River were used along with commercially-available microcystin to measure clearance rates of Rangia across a gradient of dissolved microcystin concentrations. We …

She Sells Seawalls Down By The Seashore, Tricia Lee Jan 2014

She Sells Seawalls Down By The Seashore, Tricia Lee

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

This Comment argues that a bill similar to Assembly Bill 2943 should be proposed today because there has been a drastic shift towards a general acceptance of global warming since 2002. In addition, new environmental studies support the idea of curbing seawall construction along the California coast.

Section I will provide data regarding rising sea levels and the current state of seawall construction along the California coast. It will then explain why seawall construction is not a viable adaptation strategy and delve into its negative social, environmental, and economic impacts.

Section II will examine California’s current policies for protecting coastal …

Incorporating Risk Of Reinvasion To Prioritize Sites For Invasive Species Management, Todd R. Lookingbill, Emily S. Minor, Nadia Bukach, Joseph R. Ferrari, Lisa A. Wainger

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

The relationship between landscape pattern and the distribution and spread of exotic species is an important determinant of where and when management actions are best applied. We have developed an interdisciplinary approach for prioritizing treatment of harmful, nonnative, invasive plants in National Park landscapes of the Mid-Atlantic USA. The approach relies upon a detailed model of reinvasion risk that combines information on: (1) global factors representing park-level infestation from seed and sprout, (2) landscape factors including disturbance-based spread vectors and neighborhood seed density, and (3) local factors determining establishment probability based on habitat suitability. Global seed rain estimates are derived …

Impacts Of Management On Fisheries Diversity As A Factor Affecting Social Resilience In Communities Of The Southern New England Region, Tarsila Seara Jan 2014

Impacts Of Management On Fisheries Diversity As A Factor Affecting Social Resilience In Communities Of The Southern New England Region, Tarsila Seara

Open Access Dissertations

The present research aims at examining potential impacts of fisheries management on the diversity of species exploited by fishermen in Southern New England, and examining the relationship between this diversity and the resilience of fishermen and, consequently, communities in adapting to changes in their social and physical environments. One way fishermen are able to adapt to environmental and socio-economic changes is through diversification of the catch. The current study argues that certain management plans, especially those focused on limited entry strategies, have been reducing fishermen’s adaptive flexibility, therefore reducing fishermen’s resilience and that of their communities. Two hypotheses were developed: …

Nonpoint Source Pollution Assessment And Management Of Air, Surface- And Groundwater In Rhode Island, Laura A. Schifman Jan 2014

Nonpoint Source Pollution Assessment And Management Of Air, Surface- And Groundwater In Rhode Island, Laura A. Schifman

Open Access Dissertations

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is one of the major sources of environmental contamination in the United States. Depending on the contaminant and its origin, NPS pollution can be introduced through atmospheric deposition or in the aqueous phase, for example through stormwater runoff. Here, both the atmospheric deposition of 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was measured at six different sites in Rhode Island as well as their removal, including other contaminants, from stormwater runoff. For the first part of this study seasonal and spatial variation in atmospheric PAH deposition rates were quantified along with investigating the source of the …
