Managing Seller Heterogeneity In A Competitive Marketplace, R. Wu, Mei Lin Nov 2014

Managing Seller Heterogeneity In A Competitive Marketplace, R. Wu, Mei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The growth of online marketplaces is accompanied by significant heterogeneity of the third-party sellers. The marketplace owner often applies policies that favor the sellers who offer higher values to buyers, which puts the lower-value sellers at an even greater disadvantage. This leads to the phenomenon of Matthew Effect. Our study focuses on a marketplace owner’s policy in managing seller heterogeneity and analyzes Matthew Effect in a competitive market environment. By extending the circular city model, we analytically examine the price competition among a large number of sellers that differ both in variety and in their value offerings. We present the …

Predicting Effectiveness Of Ir-Based Bug Localization Techniques, Tien-Duy B. Le, Ferdian Thung, David Lo Nov 2014

Predicting Effectiveness Of Ir-Based Bug Localization Techniques, Tien-Duy B. Le, Ferdian Thung, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, many information retrieval (IR) based bug localization approaches have been proposed in the literature. These approaches use information retrieval techniques to process a textual bug report and a collection of source code files to find buggy files. They output a ranked list of files sorted by their likelihood to contain the bug. Recent approaches can achieve reasonable accuracy, however, even a state-of-the-art bug localization tool outputs many ranked lists where buggy files appear very low in the lists. This potentially causes developers to distrust bug localization tools. Parnin and Orso recently conduct a user study and highlight that developers …

The Evolution Of Research On Multimedia Travel Guide Search And Recommender Systems, Junge Shen, Zhiyong Cheng, Jialie Shen, Tao Mei, Xinbo Gao Nov 2014

The Evolution Of Research On Multimedia Travel Guide Search And Recommender Systems, Junge Shen, Zhiyong Cheng, Jialie Shen, Tao Mei, Xinbo Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The importance of multimedia travel guide search and recommender systems has led to a substantial amount of research spanning different computer science and information system disciplines in recent years. The five core research streams we identify here incorporate a few multimedia computing and information retrieval problems that relate to the alternative perspectives of algorithm design for optimizing search/recommendation quality and different methodological paradigms to assess system performance at large scale. They include (1) query analysis, (2) diversification based on different criteria, (3) ranking and reranking, (4) personalization and (5) evaluation. Based on a comprehensive discussion and analysis of these streams, …

Traccs: Trajectory-Aware Coordinated Urban Crowd-Sourcing, Cen Chen, Shih-Fen Cheng, Aldy Gunawan, Archan Misra, Koustuv Dasgupta, Deepthi Chander Nov 2014

Traccs: Trajectory-Aware Coordinated Urban Crowd-Sourcing, Cen Chen, Shih-Fen Cheng, Aldy Gunawan, Archan Misra, Koustuv Dasgupta, Deepthi Chander

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the problem of large-scale mobile crowd-tasking, where a large pool of citizen crowd-workers are used to perform a variety of location-specific urban logistics tasks. Current approaches to such mobile crowd-tasking are very decentralized: a crowd-tasking platform usually provides each worker a set of available tasks close to the worker's current location; each worker then independently chooses which tasks she wants to accept and perform. In contrast, we propose TRACCS, a more coordinated task assignment approach, where the crowd-tasking platform assigns a sequence of tasks to each worker, taking into account their expected location trajectory over a wider time …

Indirect Challenges And Provocative Paraphrases: Using Cultural Conflict-Talk Practices To Promote Students' Dialogic Participation In Whole-Class Discussions, Michael Sherry Nov 2014

Indirect Challenges And Provocative Paraphrases: Using Cultural Conflict-Talk Practices To Promote Students' Dialogic Participation In Whole-Class Discussions, Michael Sherry

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

In this article, the author offers a sociolinguistic discourse analysis of two conversations in which a preservice teacher encouraged her urban, 10th-grade students to disagree. The author's analysis demonstrates the positive effects of the teacher's use of indirect challenges and provocative paraphrases -- features of the African American sociable conflict-talk practice known as The Dozens -- to promote collaborative disagreement during whole-class discussion. The author argues that teachers can promote collaborative disagreement in whole-class discussions by appealing to students' home-cultural disagreement practices, which may already overlap with argumentation practices valued in school settings. The author calls for further research into …

Martin Heidegger And The First World War, David A. White Nov 2014

Martin Heidegger And The First World War, David A. White

International Dialogue

The subtitle of this work is “Being and Time as Funeral Oration.” This addition helps a reader to appreciate that the book functions on various levels: scholarly, to the extent that it offers a reading of selected details in Heidegger’s first major work; historical, in that Altman asserts with great vigor that Being and Time should be seen as a “funeral oration” for those who died in World War One; biographical, in that we read much about Heidegger’s personal actions in political and academic contexts leading to and during both WWI and a decade after the conclusion of the “Great …

Educational Guide: Refugee Children's Storytelling Across Curriculum, Laurie Dishman Nov 2014

Educational Guide: Refugee Children's Storytelling Across Curriculum, Laurie Dishman

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is facing a continuous increase in the amount of refugees seeking refuge in the States. This continuous increase places a strain on the current education system that is underequipped to handle an influx of students with very special and unique needs. This thesis discusses these needs and one method of addressing these needs in a way beneficial to refugee students. The method involves traditional storytelling in refugee family's homes being used in the classroom. This method was put into practice into a classroom without any refugee students and is also discussed in this thesis.

Interventions Combining Motivational Interviewing And Cognitive Behavior To Promote Medication Adherence: A Literature Review, Sandra L. Spoelstra, Monica Schueller, Melissa Hilton, Kimberly Ridenour

Peer Reviewed Articles

Aims and objectives: The World Health Organization has indicated medication adherence is a global problem. Both motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions alone have been found to be effective at improving medication adherence. This article summarizes research that has combined motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy to improve medication adherence.

Background: Projections indicate that by 2015, 33% of cancer treatment will be in pill form, shifting responsibility for managing medication adherence to patients. These regimens are often complex, with multiple doses, drugs, or cycling, and patients often experience side effects from symptoms, making adherence difficult. Patients taking …

Symptom Burden And Healthcare Utilization In Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Catherina Anne Madani Phd Nov 2014

Symptom Burden And Healthcare Utilization In Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Catherina Anne Madani Phd

Dissertations

Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rapidly progressive disease. There is currently no cure; thus treatment is aimed at prolonging survival, improving functional status (FS), and symptom mitigation. Symptom burden (SB) can impact quality of life (QOL), and lead to increased healthcare utilization. Palliative care (PC) has been associated with higher QOL, decreased depression, aggressive care, and mortality. The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) recent report supports earlier integration of PC for people living with serious illness. Detection of patients at high risk for heavy SB may help to identify patients who could benefit from earlier integration of PC into …

Patients With Advanced Lung Cancer: Quality Of Life And Perception Of Dyspnea, Barbara A. Roces Phd, Msn, Np, Rn

Dissertations

Background: Dyspnea perception can be defined as a multidimensional experience of breathing discomfort, influenced by physiological, psychological, social, and environmental factors, that includes secondary psychological and behavioral responses and cannot be defined only by physical objective abnormalities (Mularski et al., 2010). Dyspnea is the most common and distressing symptom in patients with advanced lung cancer and decreases one's quality of life (QOL) (Smith et al., 2001). Furthermore, dyspnea has been found to interfere with physical activities such as walking, work, and psychological activities such as disposition, taking pleasure in life, relationship with others, and sleep (Tanaka, Akechi, Okuyama, Nishiwaki, & …

Patient Care Technology And The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Belinda M. Toole Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Background: Technological devices are increasingly used in healthcare and their proliferation has providers questioning the impact on the patient-provider relationship. Technological device integration has been studied in the primary care setting, less extensively in the acute care setting. The impact of device use on the nurse-patient relationship in acute care setting required further study, particularly with nursing's history of holistic practice incorporating caring and presence. Objectives: The study purpose was to explore the patient's perceptions of nurse caring and presence when technological devices were used in care delivery in the acute care setting. Specific aims were: 1) to describe the …

Jiahd In The Global Village: Al-Qaeda's Digital Radicalization And Recruitment Campaign, Katie Cannata Nov 2014

Jiahd In The Global Village: Al-Qaeda's Digital Radicalization And Recruitment Campaign, Katie Cannata

Honors College Theses

Following America’s “War on Terror,” al-Qaeda and its affiliates became highly decentralized in terms of organizational and media operations. Though mass media outlets continue to play a significant role in drawing attention to al-Qaeda’s transnational campaign, Salafi Jihadists have recently begun to rely on new media for purposes of legitimization and promotion. The Internet serves as a suitable platform for these groups’ media objectives since it is inherently anonymous and absent of censorship. Most importantly, the Internet facilitates al-Qaeda in reaching a global audience, which is made evident by the growing amount of Salafi Jihadist media that is translated or …

Uwezo: Monitoring Children’S Competencies In East Africa, Acer

Assessment GEMS

Uwezo, meaning ‘capability’ in Kiswahili, is an initiative in which the competencies of schoolaged children in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are measured to obtain information that encourages changes in educational policy and practice. Uwezo began as a four-year initiative (2009–2013) and it is envisaged that it will run for at least another five-year period (Uwezo, 2011). Uwezo’s goal is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of education. Annual household surveys are implemented to assess the basic literacy and numeracy competencies of school age children across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Uwezo believes that this information will raise public awareness …

Close On The Wind: An Environmental Military History Examining Wind’S Influence On The Early United States Navy, Scott J. Beehler Nov 2014

Close On The Wind: An Environmental Military History Examining Wind’S Influence On The Early United States Navy, Scott J. Beehler

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Utilizing General Carl von Clausewitz’s theory of friction in combat, Close on the Wind examines wind’s historical influence on early United States naval warfare, specifically small scale engagements fought during the Quasi War, First Barbary War, and the War of 1812. To accomplish this, the thesis first engages in a scientific discussion of wind, concentrating on how it occurs and what forces dictate its velocity and direction. The examination goes on to also present the types of wind that period sailing vessels encountered, including global, regional, and local patterns, as well as how wind influenced the practice of sailing and …

Essential Chan Buddhism: The Character And Spirit Of Chinese Zen, Owen G. Mordaunt

International Dialogue

This book embraces the essence of talks Guo Jun gave at a fourteen-day retreat at Chan Forest in the hills of Jakarta in 2010 as well as subsequent conversations the editor and his wife had with him. It is highly readable and accessible to the reader. It has poetic, spontaneous and witty qualities, providing deep insight into Chan (also spelled Cha’n) Buddhism. Chan is the Chinese form of Zen and is not well-known in the West as Zen is, but it derives from the traditions of India. It has flourished and continued to develop through many masters and its teachings …
