Effects Of Peer Recovery Coaches On Substance Abuse Treatment Engagement Among Child Welfare-Involved Parents, Stephen James, Richard Rivera, Michael S. Shafer Dec 2014

Effects Of Peer Recovery Coaches On Substance Abuse Treatment Engagement Among Child Welfare-Involved Parents, Stephen James, Richard Rivera, Michael S. Shafer

Journal of Family Strengths

There is a limited, but growing body of research on the effectiveness of peer recovery coaches in promoting treatment engagement, retention, and completion among child welfare-involved parents with substance use disorders. A quasi-experimental design was employed using propensity score matching to examine treatment engagement and treatment completion among child welfare-involved substance abusing parents who were exposed to either peer recovery coach engagement services or professional, non-peer engagement services. Using propensity scoring, the comparison sample of parents that did not have peer recovery coaches was statistically matched on the presence of substance exposed newborns, parental use of methamphetamine, and other predictors …

Racial Disproportionality In The Foster Care System In Texas:, Monit Cheung, Patrick Leung Dec 2014

Racial Disproportionality In The Foster Care System In Texas:, Monit Cheung, Patrick Leung

Journal of Family Strengths

This study analyzes the demographic characteristics of foster care children under the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) in Texas from 2002 to 2013. Using one state as an example, the progress charting data in 12 years demonstrates the need to set up a national agenda on closing the gap in racial disproportionality. While the data reveal an increase of Hispanic children in foster care from 33.6% in 2002 to 41.3% in 2013, in terms of disproportionality, the ratio index for Hispanic children has been much lower (0.83) than that for African American children (2.33) over …

Building Family Strengths Through Successful Parental Involvement Strategies: A Case Study With Latino Immigrant Families And Elementary School Staff, Madison G. Huber-Smith, Anne Williford Dec 2014

Building Family Strengths Through Successful Parental Involvement Strategies: A Case Study With Latino Immigrant Families And Elementary School Staff, Madison G. Huber-Smith, Anne Williford

Journal of Family Strengths

Latino immigrant families often face significant barriers in becoming involved in their children’s education due to common cultural biases and misunderstandings and language barriers. Moreover, limited evidence suggests that the ways in which Latino immigrant families engage in their children’s education may not be recognized and valued by schools, which operate within mainstream cultural values. As a result, effective outreach and engagement practices specifically for Latino parents, particularly recent immigrants, are not presently well understood. To that end, the purpose of the present case study is to explore and evaluate the strategies used by an elementary school to involve its …

The Winnebago Educare Program: Be Strong And Educate My Children, Theresa K. Barron-Mckeagney, Marisa Miakonda Cummings Dec 2014

The Winnebago Educare Program: Be Strong And Educate My Children, Theresa K. Barron-Mckeagney, Marisa Miakonda Cummings

Journal of Family Strengths

Educare of Omaha began in 2002 as a private, non-profit collaborative effort of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, the Omaha Public Schools, and the local Head Start grantee. Two sites are located in Omaha serving diverse communities in North and South Omaha. Educare differs from other early child care programs due to its prominent focus on children in poverty, and providing highest quality care by highly educated staff. “Students and families from low-income homes often face unique barriers in developing foundations for success and Educare’s program model is specifically designed to help at-risk students and their families overcome such barriers” …

Fish Sound Production In The Presence Of Harmful Algal Blooms In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Carrie C. Wall, Chad Lembke, Chuanmin Hu, David A. Mann Dec 2014

Fish Sound Production In The Presence Of Harmful Algal Blooms In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Carrie C. Wall, Chad Lembke, Chuanmin Hu, David A. Mann

Marine Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents the first known research to examine sound production by fishes during harmful algal blooms (HABs). Most fish sound production is species-specific and repetitive, enabling passive acoustic monitoring to identify the distribution and behavior of soniferous species. Autonomous gliders that collect passive acoustic data and environmental data concurrently can be used to establish the oceanographic conditions surrounding sound-producing organisms. Three passive acoustic glider missions were conducted off west-central Florida in October 2011, and September and October 2012. The deployment period for two missions was dictated by the presence of red tide events with the glider path specifically set …

The Method Of Primary Cell Culture Of Rat's Gastrocnemius Muscle And Comparison Between Skeletal Muscle Cell And Tendon Cell In Protein Expressions Of Myogenic Factor 5, Paired Box 7, And Desmin, Ying-Hsun Chen, Wen-Chung Tsai, Miao-Sui Lin, Jong-Hwei S. Pang, Kuan-Chen Pan, Tung-Yang Yu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Skeletal muscle cells generate force and produce joint movement and are easily injured. A good understanding of the biological, physiological, and pathological mechanisms of skeletal muscle cells is essential for exploring the regulation of muscle repair, which occurs in the event of an injury. A method for reproducing skeletal muscle cells is essential for studying skeletal muscles. Most studies use cell lines as study models because these are capable of reproducing numerous times. However, the function of cell lines is markedly deviated from that of normal cells. Skeletal muscle cells from primary cell culture more closely represent muscle cells in …

Ain't No Love In New York City, Jason Bisnoff Dec 2014

Ain't No Love In New York City, Jason Bisnoff

Capstones

My story is about the defunct relationship between hip-hop and the city where it was born, New York. While cities like Nashville and New Orleans tout their love for the musical forms that were born in their cities from top to bottom, the people of New York love the music and culture that calls the city home but the powers that be on a gubernatorial and municipal level keep it at an arms length. In this piece I explore why and how this disconnect exists through street sign legislation, a battleground area where petitions to co-name streets after rappers have …

Rebranding Religion, Parker Brown

The Mormon church spends millions on focus group, lobby groups, surveys, public relations, and marketing, all to fix a single problem: When Americans are asked what they think of Mormons, fewer than 50% give a positive answer. This is the story of God-vertising, of what happens when the traditions of religion meet the proselyting tools of the modern world.

Trauma In Foreign Correspondents, Pearl Macek

I have always admired journalists reporting from war zones. They seemed so courageous and utterly infallible. When James Foley and Steven Sotloff were beheaded by ISIS fighters earlier this year, I started to think about how journalists confront the trauma they witness and feel. Surely, the horrors of seeing colleagues die as well as witnessing the pain of civilians would have some effect on these professionals. I began speaking with journalists of all ages and from all walks of life to see how they dealt with their emotions after reporting from conflict zones.

Rethinking School Discipline, Gwynne Hogan Dec 2014

Rethinking School Discipline, Gwynne Hogan

Capstones

How schools maintain order in the halls can be just as important as what they teach in the classrooms. The way students are disciplined teaches them what consequences their actions will have not just in school, but as they grow into adulthood. This project examines the role of the NYPD in city schools and the impact it has on school discipline. It will also look into one school in Far Rockaway whose principal has managed cut suspensions by shifting attitudes towards discipline.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: More Than A Lame Duck, Julius Motal Dec 2014

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: More Than A Lame Duck, Julius Motal

Capstones

My project takes a balanced look at the position Recep Tayyip Erdoğan occupies as Turkey's first democratically elected president. Having served three terms as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2014, Erdoğan sought to continue his hold on Turkish politics and society by introducing popular elections for the presidency, which was largely a ceremonial position appointed by the Prime Minister. Erdoğan cruised to victory with approximately 52% of the vote, and while that was nearly guaranteed, the first months of his presidency were fraught with challenges, namely the limited powers of his new office and the ongoing crisis in the Syrian …

Revolution is as old as history itself. Scotland, Catalonia, Crimea... the human yearning for self-determination is one constant in the world. Many fight for independence, and some vote. But for regionalists in 2014, instead of revolution and referendum, the answer has come through soccer.

Pawns And Paranoia: Baltic-American Anxiety Over Russian Aggression, Leila Roos Dec 2014

Pawns And Paranoia: Baltic-American Anxiety Over Russian Aggression, Leila Roos

Capstones

Existential anxiety runs deep for Baltic-Americans. It began with the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian refugees from the Soviet Union who strove to preserve their nations in exile. Post-independence, anxiety over Russian aggression may seem like leftover Cold War paranoia. For many members of the stateside émigré communities, however, fear of Russian expansionism is instead a sober assessment of reality. Looking at what they see as President Putin’s undeclared and unimpeded invasion of Ukraine, they worry that EU and NATO membership may not be enough to ensure the safety of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This article examines Baltic-American anxiety over Russian …

The Country Club Sport: The Decline Of African-Americans In Baseball, Elijah Stewart Dec 2014

The Country Club Sport: The Decline Of African-Americans In Baseball, Elijah Stewart

Capstones

This season Major League Baseball announced that African-American players only comprised 8.3% of rosters on this year’s Opening Day. This would be tied for the lowest number ever recorded by the Institute of Ethics and Diversity in Sports since 1990, their first year of research. In 1990, TIDE reported that 17 percent of the players were black; other tallies have put the high mark as 1986, when the figure was 19 percent. The rise in popularity of basketball and football, along with a lack of funds and interests interest in baseball amongst the black community has caused the decline; but …

Hipsterevolution, Alessandra Malito

Capstones

The hipster is part of an ever-present subculture rapidly taking over metropolitan areas, regardless bias or perception. It is an old word with a deep history, and those who follow it – consciously or subconsciously – are bringing the subculture to the forefront of urban life, and impacting every aspect from social to economic through the increase of housing prices, the introduction of big-name brands in otherwise small neighborhoods and the pushing out of residents who had been there long before the new kids on the block, but won’t be there after. So who are they -- and where are …

Neural Biomarkers For Assessing Different Types Of Imagery In Pictorial Health Warning Labels For Cigarette Packaging: A Cross-Sectional Study, Roger D. Newman-Norlund, Jim Thrasher, Johann Fridriksson, William Brixius, Brett Froeliger, David Hammond, Michael K. Cummings

Faculty Publications

Objective Countries around the world have increasingly adopted pictorial health warning labels (HWLs) for tobacco packages to warn consumers about smoking-related risks. Research on how pictorial HWLs work has primarily analysed self-reported responses to HWLs; studies at the neural level comparing the brain's response to different types of HWLs may provide an important complement to prior studies, especially if self-reported responses are systematically biased. In this study we characterise the brain's response to three types of pictorial HWLs for which prior self-report studies indicated different levels of efficacy.

Methods Current smokers rated pictorial HWLs and then observed the same HWLs …
