Student Remediation In Nursing Programs: The Evidence, The Gaps, And New Directions, Cheryl L. Mee, Barb Schreiner
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Saturday, July 26, 2014: Nursing programs and faculty have increased pressure to produce safe nursing practitioners and have turned to a variety of tools to facilitate success in NCLEX licensure exams in the United States. End-of-course and end-of-program standardized testing are tools frequently used to prepare students. Nursing educators use the results of these tests to remediate student knowledge and critical thinking skills. Students also gain additional confidence by reviewing test results and planning further study and preparation. But which strategies are most effective in producing positive outcomes on licensure examinations? This session will explore evidence-based strategies …

Freedom, Benefit And Understanding: Reflections On Laurence Claus's Critique Of Authority, John M. Finnis
Freedom, Benefit And Understanding: Reflections On Laurence Claus's Critique Of Authority, John M. Finnis
Journal Articles
Written for a symposium in the University of San Diego Law School in September 2013 on Laurence Claus, Law’s Evolution and Human Understanding (New York: Oxford University Press, 2012), this article appears in the final issue of volume 52 of the San Diego Law Review. With new illustrations and considerations suggested by the book, the article argues for a number of theses: “Because I/we say so” is never a reasonable ground or formulation of authoritative acts such as enactments or parental or other orders. The moral authority of rule makers is never peremptory in a binary (all or nothing) as …

The following three research questions guided this study: (1) How do fourth grade writing teachers in two Title I schools in Texas approach the teaching of writing? (2) How does the challenge of standardized testing impact writing instruction? (3) How do these fourth grade teachers perceive their effectiveness as teachers of writing? Analysis of data led to the …
Culturally Competent Common Core Practices: A Delphi Study, Katherine Sprott
Culturally Competent Common Core Practices: A Delphi Study, Katherine Sprott
Journal of Research Initiatives
Research has shown that standards and benchmarks lack guidance for diverse learners with regard to the lesson planning and practice. The Common Core Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, a national state-led crusade, seeks to safeguard rigorous grade level content to prepare all students for college and career readiness. This study identifies five Culturally Competent Common Core Practices that can provide anchors for informing the instructional process in culturally contextualized ways. The Delphi study shows that the educator’s self-awareness fosters the level of cognitive consciousness that facilitates effect interaction with diverse populations.

Leaders In Journalism Education: Administrators At Acejmc Accredited Programs And Non-Accredited Hbcu Programs Critique The Standards, Jerry Crawford
Journal of Research Initiatives
Administrators of journalism and mass communication units have had to make decisions on how they would lead their units into the future. For over 70 years, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) has been the agency that provided leadership in this endeavor. This study surveyed administrators of programs of accredited and also non-accredited journalism programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), asking them to critique and discuss their thoughts on the nine standards. Nearly unanimously the administrators agreed that accreditation, or as those not accredited stated, “best practices”, are essential. The study focused on …
My Personal Teaching Philosophy: A Commentary, Sonya Curry
My Personal Teaching Philosophy: A Commentary, Sonya Curry
Journal of Research Initiatives
Beyond striving to ensure that students learn the fundamental content of the courses, the objectives as any professor should be: (a) to foster critical thinking skills; (b) to facilitate the acquisition of lifelong learning skills; and (c) to prepare students to function as highly skilled and competent communicators across the scope of their career. Furthermore, my overall teaching philosophy is based on two principles, which are supported extensively in the literature, constructivist, and social cognitive theory.

Factor Structure Of Ptsd, And Relation With Gender In Trauma Survivors From India, Ruby Charak, Cherie Armour, Ask Elklit, Disket Angmo, Jon D. Elhai, Hans M. Koot
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Background: The factor structure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been extensively studied in Western countries. Some studies have assessed its factor structure in Asia (China, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia), but few have directly assessed the factor structure of PTSD in an Indian adult sample. Furthermore, in a largely patriarchal society in India with strong gender roles, it becomes imperative to assess the association between the factors of PTSD and gender.
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to assess the factor structure of PTSD in an Indian sample of trauma survivors based on prevailing models of PTSD defined …

Evidence Of Culturally-Tailored Diabetes Management Program For Asian-American Immigrant Population: A Systematic Literature Review, Jee Young Joo, Hae-Kyung Lee
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:
Background: In the United States, Asian immigrants' populations are growing rapidly. In addition, Asian immigrants have a higher prevalence of diabetes diagnosis due to change of diet and lifestyle than other ethnicities. Many hospitals and clinics have offered diabetes programs, but care to ethnic minorities still remains inadequate, ineffective, and inaccessible. Language barriers and lack of health care insurance are the main contributing factors for the lack of effective programming. For these populations, a culturally-tailored diabetes intervention is needed. Cultural tailoring is defined as "employing the native language, integrating cultural dietary preferences, encouraging …

Navigating Cultural Waters: Experience Of Western Patients Being Cared For By Chinese Nurses In Beijing, Chanell Jan C. Concepcion
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 27, 2014: Purpose: There is a paucity of studies that examine the nursing care received by patients who are considered 'foreigners' or are non-native to the country where they receive care. As China emerges as a major player in world economy, there is also a rise in the number of foreigners visiting and living in the country in the past decade. In the 2010 census, there are over one million foreign and non-mainland Chinese nationals living in China. About a quarter (23%) is from Western countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and European …
Using Reflective Writing As A Nursing Intervention: Review Of The Literature, Monica Kennison
Using Reflective Writing As A Nursing Intervention: Review Of The Literature, Monica Kennison
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Over twenty years ago in a groundbreaking study, participants who engaged in an expressive writing intervention about emotionally-laden experiences showed positive changes in health outcomes when compared with those in a neutral writing control group. The effects lasted several weeks after the writing intervention concluded. Since then, a number of studies have indicated that written disclosure about stressful experiences improves measures of physical and mental health in clinical and non-clinical populations. For instance, expressive writing has been linked to: fewer physician visits, increases in T-helper cell growth, drops in blood pressure and heart rate, and improvements in mood. Additionally, writing …
Registered Nurses Extended Work Shifts And The Association With Quality Of Nursing Care And Patient Safety: A Cross Sectional Survey In Twelve European Countries, Peter Griffiths
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Saturday, July 26, 2014:
Purpose: In some countries, there is a move toward nurses working shifts of longer duration to reduce time and cost of shift handovers and staff overlap, and to potentially improve work life balance; 12 hour shifts have become the norm in some countries and hospitals. However, concerns have been raised as to whether nurses can perform reliably and effectively when working longer shifts. This presentation gives the results of a study that aims to describe shift patterns of European nurses and to investigate whether shift length is associated with nurse-reported quality and safety …

Word Recognition In Noise Among Young And Older Listeners: A Combined Behavioral And Electrophysiological Study, Victoria Ann Williams-Sanchez
Word Recognition In Noise Among Young And Older Listeners: A Combined Behavioral And Electrophysiological Study, Victoria Ann Williams-Sanchez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Word recognition is based on the complex interplay of bottom up processing of acoustic input and corresponding top-down processing based on linguistic redundancies (i.e., contextual cues). Friedrich and Kotz (2007) investigated the timeline of integrating top-down and bottom-up processes among young adults with normal hearing using sentences presented in quiet. As a follow-up study, also with young adults with normal hearing (Experiment 1 of this dissertation), we used sentences embedded in multi-talker background noise and found similar results to Friedrich and Kotz (2007); but, with the use of principal component analysis (PCA) unveiled additional effects of phonological and semantic integration …
