Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items

This collection includes a variety of underground newspapers, various pamphlets and flyers, and various documents related to political activities, social justice, American involvement in the Vietnamese conflict, and other events during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Collected by William “Bill” Hamilton, a 1995 graduate of the University of South Florida, these materials illustrate the topics of discussion from that time and how the alternative and underground press characterized the rapidly changing social landscape. Most of the underground papers and miscellaneous documents originated from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Mr. Hamilton donated these papers to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library …

Life On The Back Roads: Poems, Jessica R. Dennis Nov 2014

Life On The Back Roads: Poems, Jessica R. Dennis

Theses & Honors Papers

Country life does not always feature the idyllic beautiful landscapes and the closeness of family as depicted in Elizabethan pastoral and Romantic nature poetry. While these elements indeed exist, much of country life is grittily realistic - a condition that derives from the hardships and "the dailiness of experience," as Virginia Woolf put it, consonant with living in "a state of nature." Drawing on my own rural experiences, first in my home state of Pennsylvania and later in North Carolina and Virginia, I will explore in my poems the complex relationship structures that form in rural America, focusing on the …

Terror: Towards A Better Quantification Of The Uncertainty Propagated During The Characterization Of Tephra Deposits, Sebastien Biass, Gholamhossein Bagheri, William H. Aeberhard, Costanza Bonadonna

Statistics in Volcanology

We present TError, a Matlab package designed to quantify systematically the uncertainty associated with the characterization of tephra deposits, in which the most commonly used methods to quantify eruption source parameters are implemented. Inputs of the code are a range of field-based, model-based and empirical parameters (i.e., clast diameter, crosswind and downwind ranges, thickness measurement, area of isopach contours, bulk deposit density, empirical constants and wind speed), for which the user defines an uncertainty and an associated distribution. The TError package contains two main functions. The first function deterministically varies one input parameter at a time and quantifies the sensitivity …

Sustained Vigilance, Errors, And Job Satisfaction In A Population Of Critical Care And Emergency Department Nurses, Skip G. Morelock Nov 2014

Sustained Vigilance, Errors, And Job Satisfaction In A Population Of Critical Care And Emergency Department Nurses, Skip G. Morelock

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Despite the continuing efforts of health care organizations to provide a culture of safety, an unacceptable number of medication incidents and hospital errors continue to occur. This study focuses on these events as they relate to job satisfaction in the context of sustained vigilance required of acute care nurses. A constellation of variables contribute to errors including fatigue, stress, overload, protocol satisfaction, and practice risk. The study includes an intense examination of the physiological and psychological effects of night shift work. The results reflect a correlation between fatigue and errors with a less robust, though still statistically significant, association with …

Wordless Intervention For Epilepsy In Learning Disabilities (Wield): Study Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Feasibility Trial, Marie-Anne Durand, Bob Gates, Georgina Parkes, Asif Zia

Dartmouth Scholarship

Epilepsy is the most common neurological problem that affects people with learning disabilities. The high seizure frequency, resistance to treatments, associated skills deficit and co-morbidities make the management of epilepsy particularly challenging for people with learning disabilities. The Books Beyond Words booklet for epilepsy uses images to help people with learning disabilities manage their condition and improve quality of life. Our aim is to conduct a randomized controlled feasibility trial exploring key methodological, design and acceptability issues, in order to subsequently undertake a large-scale randomized controlled trial of the Books Beyond Words booklet for epilepsy.

The Unequal Pursuit Of Happiness? Inequality In Agency, Optimism, And Access To The American Dream, Carol Graham Nov 2014

The Unequal Pursuit Of Happiness? Inequality In Agency, Optimism, And Access To The American Dream, Carol Graham

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

The Declaration of Independence promises the opportunity to seek life fulfillment and happiness – in its fullest sense- for all U.S. citizens. Is happiness for all an increasingly elusive dream? There is increasing debate – both academic and political – about the extent to which the American Dream is equally available to all citizens today. U.S. trends in opportunity and in distributional outcomes are becoming more unequal by any number of measures. Is happiness as unequally shared as income in the U.S.? While U.S. attitudes about inequality and opportunity have historically been exceptional, are they still?

Our well-being metrics depict …

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef Watch (CRW) program has developed a daily global 5-km product suite based on satellite observations to monitor thermal stress on coral reefs. These products fulfill requests from coral reef managers and researchers for higher resolution products by taking advantage of new satellites, sensors and algorithms. Improvements of the 5-km products over CRW’s heritage global 50-km products are derived from: (1) the higher resolution and greater data density of NOAA’s next-generation operational daily global 5-km geo-polar blended sea surface temperature (SST) analysis; and (2) implementation of a new SST climatology derived …

Robust Adaptive Channel Estimation In Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Nov 2014

Robust Adaptive Channel Estimation In Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, a robust iterative channel estimation based minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) adaptive turbo equalizer is proposed and studied for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection. Rather than the classical MMSE or normalized least mean squares (NLMS) estimation algorithms, the improved proportionate NLMS (IPNLMS) is adopted for the iterative MIMO channel estimator. The MIMO channel estimation is performed jointly with the MMSE equalizer and the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder. With inter-block interference removed, the MIMO MMSE equalization is performed with overlapped information subblocks without guard intervals, thus a high transmission efficiency is guaranteed, and performance degradation is prevented. …

Terms And Conditions, Megan Emily Mccormack Nov 2014

Terms And Conditions, Megan Emily Mccormack

Theses

This thesis, titled “Terms and Conditions,” is a collection of five short stories. Although there is a mix of realist and speculative fiction, there are themes as well as other similarities that these stories share. All the characters in the following stories feel a lack of something that they desperately want, and in most cases that is love in the form of a parent, a sibling, or a friend. These characters not only uncover the harsher side of life in their search for a real connection, but they also reveal who they are as a person. Dr. Kruegler wants a …
