Self Assessed Training Needs Of Family Service Workers In Arkansas, Gretchen Belinda Skinner Nov 2014

Self Assessed Training Needs Of Family Service Workers In Arkansas, Gretchen Belinda Skinner

Theses and Dissertations

Research in the field of child welfare signifies that training is necessary to adequately prepare staff for their duties as family service workers. This study examines the association between self-assessed training needs and demographic characteristics of 102 Arkansas family service workers in 2008-2009. The purpose of this interdisciplinary retrospective exploratory study is to gain knowledge about training needs in in an effort to design better training curriculum that meet the needs of the new employees, thus reducing burnout and attrition. Findings of this study indicate there is no significant association between self-identified training needs and demographic characteristics. However, the findings …

Executive Functioning In The Context Of Urban Poverty: An Examination Of Poverty Related Stress And Its Relationships To Academic Achievement, Jacquelyn L. Doxie Nov 2014

Executive Functioning In The Context Of Urban Poverty: An Examination Of Poverty Related Stress And Its Relationships To Academic Achievement, Jacquelyn L. Doxie

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Living in urban poverty has been linked to numerous negative conditions that disproportionately expose low-income urban youth and their families to severe and chronic stressors (Collins et al., 2010; DeNavas-Walt, Proctor, and Smith, 2012; Sznitman, Reisel, and Romer, 2011). Research has consistently shown a strong relationship between these stressors and numerous negative outcomes that can impact an adolescent emotionally, behaviorally, and academically (Conger et al., 2002). This dissertation is focused on the area of academic achievement, an outcome consistently found to be negatively impacted by poverty (Rouse and Fantuzzo, 2009). Based on Bronfenbrenner’s model of bio-ecological human development (Bronfenbrenner and …

Impact Of Universal Disinfectant Cap Implementation On Central Line–Associated Bloodstream Infections, Katreena Collette Merrill, Sharon Sumner, Lorraine Linford, Carrie Taylor, Christopher Macintosh Nov 2014

Impact Of Universal Disinfectant Cap Implementation On Central Line–Associated Bloodstream Infections, Katreena Collette Merrill, Sharon Sumner, Lorraine Linford, Carrie Taylor, Christopher Macintosh

Faculty Publications

Background: Central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) result in increased length of stay, cost, and patient morbidity and mortality. One CLABSI prevention method is disinfection of intravenous access points. The literature suggests that placing disinfectant caps over needleless connectors decreases CLABSI risk.

Methods: A quasi-experimental intervention study was conducted in a >430-bed trauma I center. In addition to an existing standard central line bundle, a new intervention consisting of a luer-lock disinfectant cap with 70% alcohol was implemented in all intravenous (IV) needleless connectors on patients with peripheral and central lines. Compliance to the disinfectant cap was monitored weekly. A generalized …

‘Once A Local Surfer, Always A Local Surfer’: Local Surfing Careers In A Southwest English Village, Ef Beaumont, D Brown Nov 2014

‘Once A Local Surfer, Always A Local Surfer’: Local Surfing Careers In A Southwest English Village, Ef Beaumont, D Brown

Plymouth Business School

This article reports on findings from an ethnographic study (2008–09) conducted in a village with a significant population of local surfers in Cornwall (Southwest England). Stimulated by Goffman's (1961) interpretation of the concept of career and elaborated by the work of Stebbins (1970) on “subjective career,” Stebbins's (1982) framework of “serious leisure” and “serious leisure career” (Stebbins, 2005), we identify moments from local surfer careers lived in this community setting. We suggest that similar to findings from other subcultural studies on sports careers the local surfing career in this context contains shared experiential stages: the nurtured stage, the possible competitive …

Behavioral Measures Of Audibility As Indicators Of Hearing Aid Benefit, Bethany Lauren Burkeen Nov 2014

Behavioral Measures Of Audibility As Indicators Of Hearing Aid Benefit, Bethany Lauren Burkeen

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the possibility of quantifying hearing aid benefit by means of the Audibility Index. The Audibility Index (AI) is defined as the amount of the audible speech spectrum available to a listener. Twenty-one participants with bilateral sensorineural hearing losses, each required to wear bilateral hearing aids, were recruited for this study. Utilizing FM tone stimuli, audiometric thresholds were established for each individual conventionally under earphones for the right and left ears, unaided in a sound field, and aided in a sound field. The thresholds were placed on a count-the-dot audiogram in order to calculate AIs for each individual. …

Street Level Food Networks: Understanding Ethnic Food Cart Supply Chains In Eastern Portland, Or, Alexander G. Novie Nov 2014

Street Level Food Networks: Understanding Ethnic Food Cart Supply Chains In Eastern Portland, Or, Alexander G. Novie

Dissertations and Theses

Portland, OR, is the site of a unique urban food cart phenomenon that provides opportunities for small business ownership and access points for culturally specific food for the city's foreign-born and minority populations. Known as a "foodie haven," Portland also has an active sustainable food movement with engaged citizens and support from city and regional policies aimed at significantly increasing the consumption of local food. To date, there have been no in-depth studies on the sourcing habits of Portland food cart owners and whether or not these street-level actors are involved in the area's local alternative food movements (AFNs). The …

All But Thesis: On Dealing With Academic Anxiety At The Graduate Level, Angela Schnabel Nov 2014

All But Thesis: On Dealing With Academic Anxiety At The Graduate Level, Angela Schnabel

Theses and Dissertations

"All But Thesis: On Dealing with Academic Anxiety at the Graduate Level" is a marriage of autoethnography and memoir framed in principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that recounts my struggle with academic anxiety at the graduate level. I found no other first-person narratives on this topic, so my thesis sets out to bridge that gap. Psychology and the library, educational, and informational sciences fields discuss perfectionism and procrastination as causes of academic anxiety, so here I explore the roles those concepts play in my own anxiety issues. A reflexive journal quantified my progress throughout the semester, it rates my anxiety …

Ten Integrated Performance Assessments For A Novel-Level College French Class, Nanette Ada Zobkov

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the need for standards-based assessment, researchers created the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA), which connects assessment and instruction, testing learners within an authentic context across three communicative modes. It is a better measure of proficiency, provides feedback to learners, positively impacts instruction, and improves learners' attitudes toward assessment. There are many benefits of the IPA, but many instructors do not know how to create and implement them in the classroom. There is a lack of quality IPA examples available to French teachers, and existing IPAs are for high proficiency levels. The author believes that if teachers had access …

The Gathings Committee: Censorship, Society, And Paperback Literature In The 1950s, Jim Stallings Nov 2014

The Gathings Committee: Censorship, Society, And Paperback Literature In The 1950s, Jim Stallings

Theses and Dissertations

In 1952, Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn appointed Arkansas Democrat Representative Ezekiel Candler "Took" Gathings to lead a select committee and investigate the potential effect of allegedly obscene literature on the morals of American society. The House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials, informally known as the Gathings Committee, issued a majority report in 1953. It claimed the distribution of obscene literature was a pervasive problem, and recommended the federal government censor the distribution of material deemed inappropriate. Ultimately, the House of Representatives discarded the committee's recommendations. However, questions of whether or not literature could affect social morals, or …

The Cross Cultural Examination Of A Brief Autism Diagnostic Interview (Adi-R) In Korea And The United States, Elizabeth Lally Daley Nov 2014

The Cross Cultural Examination Of A Brief Autism Diagnostic Interview (Adi-R) In Korea And The United States, Elizabeth Lally Daley

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States; as many as 1 in 88 individuals have been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010). Although scientists are working on understanding how many people in the population have autism, there is a limited amount of focus on the identification of any cultural factors that may influence people’s understanding about autism, attitudes about autism, and reporting of symptoms. The accepted methods for diagnosing autism are the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). This study seeks to …

Empirical Formulas For Direct Double Ionization By Bare Ions: Z=-1 To 92, Robert D. Dubois, A. C.F. Santos, S. T. Manson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental cross sections and cross-section ratios reported in the literature for direct double ionization of the outer shells of helium, neon, and argon atoms resulting from bare ions ranging from protons to uranium and for antiprotons are analyzed in terms of a first- and second-order interference model originally proposed by McGuire [J. H. McGuire, Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 1153 (1982) PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.49.1153]. Empirical formulas for the various contributions to double ionization plus information about the phase difference between the first- and second-order mechanisms are extracted from the data. Projectile and target scaling's are also extracted. Total cross sections and their ratios …

Longer Gestation Among Children Born Full Term Influences Cognitive And Motor Development, Emma V. Espel, Laura M. Glynn, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Children born preterm show persisting impairments in cognitive functioning, school achievement, and brain development. Most research has focused on implications of birth prior to 37 gestational weeks; however, the fetal central nervous system continues to make fundamental changes throughout gestation. Longer gestation is associated with reduced morbidity and mortality even among infants born during the period clinically defined as full term (37–41 gestational weeks). The implications of shortened gestation among term infants for neurodevelopment are poorly understood. The present study prospectively evaluates 232 mothers and their full term infants (50.4% male infants) at three time points across the first postnatal …

Neural Network Dynamic Progamming Constrained Control Of Distributed Parameter Systems Governed By Parabolic Partial Differential Equations With Application To Diffusion-Reaction Processes, Behzad Talaei, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan Nov 2014

Neural Network Dynamic Progamming Constrained Control Of Distributed Parameter Systems Governed By Parabolic Partial Differential Equations With Application To Diffusion-Reaction Processes, Behzad Talaei, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel neural network (NN) adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) control scheme for distributed parameter systems (DPS) governed by parabolic partial differential equations (PDE) is introduced in the presence of control constraints and unknown system dynamics. First, Galerkin method is utilized to develop a relevant reduced order system which captures the dominant dynamics of the DPS. Subsequently, a novel control scheme is proposed over finite horizon by using NN ADP. To relax the requirement of system dynamics, a novel NN identifier is developed. More-over, a second NN is proposed to estimate online the time-varying non-quadratic value function from …
