Where Is All The Conservative Comedy?, Oliver Morrison

It would be nice if there were a single, simple explanation for why conservatives have failed at political TV satire. But the truth is there are many factors that have all contributed: the tendency of satire to skewer the establishment; the lack of conservatives drawn to comedy; the unique liberal anger when the medium came of age; the first-in training advantage of the Daily Show; the subtle biases of Hollywood executives making the decisions; as well as the different sensibilities of conservative and liberal viewers.

This investigative project explores the abuses of for-profit colleges in New York City in the context of what federal, state and city bodies have done to regulate these schools. We focused on two for-profits in the city, ASA College and TCI College, whose practices typify the criticisms of for-profit schools: targeting low-income people of color, funding the school from mostly federal student loans and issuing pricey degrees that yield few field-specific jobs.

World Maritime University Dissertations

Due to the development of the international trade, the shipping industry has become one of the prime methods of carrying commodities. Commodities are usually shipped through the main international routes, including the main international straits, which are usually used for international navigation. To regulate the rights and obligations between the littoral States and user States in the international Straits, UNCLOS 1982 adopted provisions, which are related to the Straits Used for International Navigation regime. The Straits of Malacca and Singapore are part of this regime. To enhance the safety of navigation and marine environmental protection in the Straits of Malacca …

Book Review The Leiden Legacy: Concepts Of Law In Indonesia, M. Yahdi Salampessy

Indonesia Law Review

The Indonesian civil law system is often taken for granted, when it is actually a product of “institutional transplantation” and inherited from the Dutch Colonization. Long before the arrival of colonial powers in Indonesia several centuries ago, many local communities had operated within their self-regulating systems with multiple political entities. When colonization came to power, however, there was a massive shift from judge-made law to a centralized statute-based legal system imposed by the colonial order.

Effects Of Acetaminophen, Etodolac And Indomethacin On Migration, Proliferation And Collagen Expression Of Tendon Cells, Yun-Ming Yang, Hsiang-Ning Chang, S Jong-Hwei Pang, Chung-Bao Hou, Wen-Chung Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to treat tendinopathy. Tendon healing requires migration of tendon cells to the repair site, followed by proliferation of these cells and collagen synthesis. Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of acetaminophen, etodolac, and indomethacin on tenocyte migration, proliferation, and synthesis of type I and III collagen. Methods: Rat Achilles tendon cells were treated with acetaminophen, etodolac, and indomethacin. Tendon cell migration and proliferation were assessed using transwell filter migration assay and MTT assay, respectively. The expression of collagen I and III mRNA were evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Unlike …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objective: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is commonly used to treat sports-related tendinopathy or tendon injury. However, scientific evidence of the effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of tendinopathy treatment remained limited. Tendon healing requires tenocyte migration to the repair site, followed by proliferation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix, including collagens. The study was designed to determine the effect of laser on the metabolism of collagen for injuried tendon repair, furthermore, become a foundation of the LLLT for tendon repair. Methods: Tendon cells from rat Achilles tendons were obtained to investigate the effect of LLLT on collagen metabolism in tendon repair. …

Congenital Epidermoid Cyst Results In Muscle Fusion Defect In The Upper Lip, Fatih Dogan, Ibrahim Hakan Bucak

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Epidermoid cysts are rarely detected malformations in the oral cavity. Their development sites are the sublingual, submaxillary, and submandibular spaces. In this paper, we report a three-month-old infant who was admitted to our hospital due upper lip swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that she had a two-centimeter cystic lesion and fusion defects of orbicularis oris muscle. The cyst was surgically removed, and histopathological diagnosis was “epidermoid cyst.” In recent literature, we could not find reports related to orbicularis oris muscle fusion defects because of epidermoid cyst.

Setting A Good Example In Pride And Prejudice, Joanna L. Colmery Dec 2014

Setting A Good Example In Pride And Prejudice, Joanna L. Colmery

The Kabod

Although most readers of Pride and Prejudice think that the book centers on the romance between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, I argue that the central message is a warning about romantic fulfilment gone awry as illustrated through Lydia and Wickham. I compare the two suits and identify Austen’s cautionary tale that only through honorable and sincere means in courtship can two people be ensured a happy, satisfying marriage.

Religiosity In Constitutions And The Status Of Minority Rights, Brandy G. Robinson

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Minority rights and religion have never been topics that are simultaneously considered. However, arguably, the two have relevance, especially when combined with the topic and theory of constitutionalism. Historically and traditionally, minorities have been granted certain rights and have been denied certain rights under various constitutions. These grants and denials relate to cultural differences and values, arguably relating to a culture’s understanding and interpretation of religion.

This article explores the relationship and status of minority rights as it relates to religiosity and constitutionalism. Essentially, there is a correlation between these topics and research shows where certain nations have used religion …

Immigrant Social-Economic Landscape Changes And Ethno-Racial Border Formation In Columbus, Ohio, David M. Walker Dr., Jack Schemenauer Dec 2014

Immigrant Social-Economic Landscape Changes And Ethno-Racial Border Formation In Columbus, Ohio, David M. Walker Dr., Jack Schemenauer

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

In this study we analyze new immigrant gateways in the U.S. and the role African and Latino immigrants play in reinventing urban spaces while culturally and economically regenerating neighborhoods juxtaposed to orthodox city planning practices. Through this research we aim to further understand how urban space is produced at divergent scales in the era of heightened globalization. Through this understanding we analyze how the contestation over how urban space is used and consumed leads to distinctive forms in the production of urban space and the subsequent unintended formation of newly perceived cultural borders, often based upon race and ethnicity. Through …

Publications and Research

Objective Plasma apolipoprotein (apo)D, a ubiquitously expressed protein that binds small hydrophobic ligands, is found mainly on HDL particles. According to studies of human genetics and lipid disorders, plasma apoD levels positively correlate with HDL-cholesterol and apoAI levels. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that apoD was a regulator of HDL metabolism. Methods & Results We compared the plasma lipid and lipoprotein profiles of wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice with apoD−/− mice on a C57BL/6 background after receiving a high fat-high cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. ApoD−/− mice had higher HDL-cholesterol levels (61±13-apoD−/− vs. 52±10-WT-males; 37±11-apoD−/− vs. 22±2 WT-female) than WT mice …
