Contemporary Franco Americans: A Study Of Ethnic Identity, Help-Seeking Attitudes, And Values, Jessica L. Mayo Jan 2014

Contemporary Franco Americans: A Study Of Ethnic Identity, Help-Seeking Attitudes, And Values, Jessica L. Mayo

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Given the proximity to Canada, many French Canadians who immigrated to the United States between 1850 and 1950 settled within New England. This immigration resulted in a large population of French Canadian descendants, now considered Franco Americans, within this region. Despite the number of Franco Americans, mental health professionals in New England are offered limited knowledge on conceptualizing and treating this population. To respond to this need, the present study investigated the cultural values, ethnic identity, and professional psychological help-seeking attitudes of contemporary Franco Americans. It was hypothesized that Franco Americans would prioritize values in line with the group’s traditional …

As the main witnesses of the ecological and economic impacts of invasions on ecosystems around the world, ecologists seek to provide the relevant science that informs managers about the potential for invasion of specific organisms in their region(s) of interest. Yet, the assorted literature that could inform such forecasts is rarely integrated to do so, and further, the diverse nature of the data available complicates synthesis and quantitative prediction. Here we present a set of analytical tools for synthesizing different levels of distributional and/or demographic data to produce meaningful assessments of invasion potential that can guide management at multiple phases …

New York's Little Syria, 18810-1935, Gregory J. Shibley Jan 2014

New York's Little Syria, 18810-1935, Gregory J. Shibley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis argues that, from 1880 to 1935, Syrian immigrants, who comprised an enclave on the Lower West Side of Manhattan in New York City, sought to control the pace and extent of their assimilation into mainstream American society, by distancing themselves from their ethnicity, or by using their ethnicity to their advantage, or by combining both approaches to varying degrees, as they determined individually, rather than monolithically.

Effects Of Salinity Tolerances On Survival And Life History Of 2 Cladocerans, Di̇dem Gökçe, Duygu Özhan Turhan Jan 2014

Effects Of Salinity Tolerances On Survival And Life History Of 2 Cladocerans, Di̇dem Gökçe, Duygu Özhan Turhan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Salinity alterations in freshwater ecosystems greatly affect the survival and life history of zooplankton and, therefore, have an effect on higher trophic levels. Salinity is an essential and critical factor in determining the presence, dominance, and succession of organisms. After being collected in the field, Scapholeberis mucronata and Simocephalus vetulus were brought to the laboratory in water. Under laboratory conditions (24 ± 1 °C; 16:8 h photoperiod), we evaluated the effect of different salt concentrations on the neonates. The LC_{50} values were determined at different halotolerance levels for S. mucronata (0.375 g L^{-1}) and S. vetulus (0.250 g L^{-1}). Results …

Comparative Demography And Life History Evolution Of Plants, Cyril Mbeau Ache Jan 2014

Comparative Demography And Life History Evolution Of Plants, Cyril Mbeau Ache

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Explaining the origin and maintenance of biodiversity is a central goal in ecology and evolutionary biology. Some of the most important, theoretical explanations for this diversity centre on the evolution of life histories. Comparative studies on life history evolution, have received significant attention in the zoological literature, but have lagged in plants. Recent developments, however, have emphasised the value of comparative analysis of data for many species to test existing theories of life history evolution, as well as to provide the basis for developing additional or alternative theories. The primary goal of this study was to explore existing theories of …

Field-Readable Alphanumeric Flags Are Valuable Markers For Shorebirds: Use Of Double-Marking To Identify Cases Of Misidentification, Erin A. Roche, Colin M. Dovichin, Todd W. Arnold Jan 2014

Field-Readable Alphanumeric Flags Are Valuable Markers For Shorebirds: Use Of Double-Marking To Identify Cases Of Misidentification, Erin A. Roche, Colin M. Dovichin, Todd W. Arnold

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Implicit assumptions for most mark-recapture studies are that individuals do not lose their markers and all observed markers are correctly recorded. If these assumptions are violated, e.g., due to loss or extreme wear of markers, estimates of population size and vital rates will be biased. Double-marking experiments have been widely used to estimate rates of marker loss and adjust for associated bias, and we extended this approach to estimate rates of recording errors. We double-marked 309 Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) with unique combinations of color bands and alphanumeric flags and used multi-state mark recapture models to estimate the frequency …

Upcycling Church: New Hope For Transforming Declining And Plateaued Churches, Richard J. Frazer Jan 2014

Upcycling Church: New Hope For Transforming Declining And Plateaued Churches, Richard J. Frazer

Great Commission Research Journal

This article introduces new language and an alternative paradigm to the topic of revitalizing declining churches, which presents a transforming process for pastors, church leaders, denominational executives, and consultants to implement when coaching revitalizing churches. The biblical foundation for this writing is Jesus’ letter to the church of Sardis, recorded in Revelation 3:1–6. Five principles for upcycling a declining church are presented: embrace the crisis, answer the wakeup call, strengthen what remains, strengthen who remains, and return to spiritual roots.

Reproductive Biology Of The Bonnethead (Sphyrna Tiburo) From The Southeastern U.S. Atlantic Coast, Melissa I. Gonzalez De Acevedo Jan 2014

Reproductive Biology Of The Bonnethead (Sphyrna Tiburo) From The Southeastern U.S. Atlantic Coast, Melissa I. Gonzalez De Acevedo

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the life history of marine wildlife is essential for the management of both commercial and recreational fisheries. Bonnetheads (Sphyrna tiburo) are a component of the small coastal shark (SCS) fishery complex, and are caught regularly in both types of fisheries. Despite being well studied in the Gulf of Mexico, little is known about bonnetheads from the U.S. Atlantic coast. The goal of the first component of this study was to provide new, key information on their life history to improve management of U.S. Atlantic populations, particularly by identifying reproductive seasonality, periodicity and fecundity. This was accomplished by examining sexually …

Predictive Utility And Achievement Outcomes Of Two Simultaneous District-Developed Interim Assessment Programs, Tavymae W. Chen Jan 2014

Predictive Utility And Achievement Outcomes Of Two Simultaneous District-Developed Interim Assessment Programs, Tavymae W. Chen

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present correlational, ex post facto study was to evaluate the predictive ability and academic achievement criterion outcomes of two district-developed interim mathematics assessment programs for a sample of 5,801 grade 6 students in a large urban school district. Average scores for both interim assessment types were statistically significantly more related to 2013 FCAT 2.0 scores (r = .75 and .72; p < .001) than all other predictors (i.e., student demographics, Florida school grade, and student course GPA) except for 2012 FCAT 2.0 scores (r = .78; p < .001). Further, the newer interim assessment program with an instructional purpose and curriculum-based sequencing had slightly stronger overall predictive power (rs = .88) and a higher criterion mean score (M = 218.08) than the older, state-test mirror interim assessment program (rs = .85; M = 215.47). …

Standing In The Doorway: Role Complexity In The Position Of Senior Student Affairs Officer, Jasi L. O'Connor Jan 2014

Standing In The Doorway: Role Complexity In The Position Of Senior Student Affairs Officer, Jasi L. O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

Student affairs practice at small schools is becoming increasingly complex, and staff at all levels, including the senior student affairs officer (SSAO) are required to manage multiple roles. The purpose of this study was to use a grounded theory methodology to investigate if the need for the SSAO to hold multiple roles requires them to be able to effectively utilize both leadership and management skills. A second research question of this study was to investigate if the culture of a religiously-affiliated college impacts the way the SSAOs conduct their role. To investigate these questions, SSAOs at small, private, liberal arts …
