Culture-Based Interpretation Of Projected Destination Images: A Semantic Network Analysis, Menglu Gao

Open Access Theses

This study attempts to explore destination image interpretation in the context of two cultural groups (US and China) and two information sources (Blog and Destination Management Organization website). Semantic Network Analysis was employed to obtain a visual representation and comparison of perceived destination image categories of Marrakesh across groups. Computer-Aided Textual Analysis software, AutoMap3.0 Program and ROST Content Mining System, were used initially for data preparation and keywords analysis, and UCINET 6 was then applied to conduct semantic network analysis such as centrality analysis and network structure measurements. The results indicated that the perceived image of Marrakesh varies by the …

Teaching The Writing Methods Course: A Multiple Case Study Of Teachers’ Professional Journeys, Teaching Contexts, Theoretical Frames, And Courses, Kristin A. K. Sovis Apr 2014

Teaching The Writing Methods Course: A Multiple Case Study Of Teachers’ Professional Journeys, Teaching Contexts, Theoretical Frames, And Courses, Kristin A. K. Sovis

Dissertations

This study, situated within the fields of English education and writing teacher education, illustrates not only what is happening in writing methods courses but why in its examination of writing methods courses and instructor influences. The writing methods course is identified by English educators and writing teacher educators as “pivotal” in K-12 English teacher preparation, and the purpose of this study is to better understand multiple versions of this course and how teacher influences affect the design and implementation of the course (Grossman, 1990; Smagorinsky and Whiting, 1995; McCann, 2005).

This study builds upon scholarship that explores individual versions of …

What Did You Learn In School Today? The Recursive Relationship Between Media Coverage Of Public Education And The Crafting Of Education Policy, Elisabeth Reinkordt Apr 2014

What Did You Learn In School Today? The Recursive Relationship Between Media Coverage Of Public Education And The Crafting Of Education Policy, Elisabeth Reinkordt

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

How does the public learn about issues in contemporary education policy? While changes in the economics of the media industry have shifted the mass media landscape, local communities continue to receive information about the state of their local schools primarily through local newspapers or television stations. It is arguably the most important task of a local paper to provide education coverage, as the schools are often the primary beneficiary of local tax revenues. This thesis reviews the literature surrounding the interface between education reporting and the crafting of education policy, examines the way in which education stories are framed by …

Sex, Drugs, And Exotic Fantasy: Tangier And Orientalism Through Paul Bowles And Mohamed Choukri, Bailey Booras Apr 2014

Sex, Drugs, And Exotic Fantasy: Tangier And Orientalism Through Paul Bowles And Mohamed Choukri, Bailey Booras

All Theses And Dissertations

Situated on the edge of Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean Sea, Tangier is a transnational city in terms of its culture, history, and influences. Authors Paul Bowles and Mohamed Choukri were inspired to write about life in this complex borderland city. These authors, one, an insider, writing from the experience of living in poverty, the other providing unique insider and outsider perspectives on the city as an American expatriate who lived there for 50 years, illustrate whether or not elements of Edward Said’s Orientalism, a term which he uses to describe the negative assumptions applied to the East by the …

Illuminating The Irish Free State: Nationalism, National Identity, And The Promotion Of The Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme, Mckayla Kay Sutton Apr 2014

Illuminating The Irish Free State: Nationalism, National Identity, And The Promotion Of The Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme, Mckayla Kay Sutton

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation focuses on the ways in which the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme influenced perceptions of Irishness in the fraught context of postcolonial nation building. The Irish Free State, established by a treaty with Great Britain in 1921, faced the difficult task of maintaining order and establishing stable institutions for the new state. One of the government's most audacious efforts to achieve these objectives was to construct the largest hydroelectric dam in the world on the River Shannon in 1925 with the help of German contractors from Siemens-Schuckert. The first half of the dissertation deals with several ideological issues brought to …

“(Who Discovered) America”: Ozomatli And The Mestiz@ Rhetoric Of Hip Hop, Cruz Medina Apr 2014

“(Who Discovered) America”: Ozomatli And The Mestiz@ Rhetoric Of Hip Hop, Cruz Medina

English

This article examines the rhetoric of Mexican-American hip hop through the analysis of the music by the multicultural hip hop fusion band, Ozomatli, from Los Angeles. The objective is to examine how Ozomatli performs linguistic, epistemic, and musical-rhetorical border crossing that provokes cultural and social consciousness. As a cross-cultural site of analysis, Ozomatli embodies cultural mestizaje, mestiza consciousness, and mestiz@ rhetoric that illuminates social justice issues beneath surface-level beats and rhythms. Appointed cultural ambassadors by the U.S. government, Ozomatli navigates dominant systems of power while performing music that contests hegemony. Their mestiz@ hip hop draws from diverse musical traditions like …

Thinking Otherwise About God, Marx, And Eagleton: A Response To Terry Eagleton, Marilyn Edelstein Apr 2014

Thinking Otherwise About God, Marx, And Eagleton: A Response To Terry Eagleton, Marilyn Edelstein

English

I first read some of Eagleton’s work when I was in graduate school, and I began to use his best-selling Literary Theory: An Introduction2 in the new “Contemporary Literary Theory and Criticism” course I created shortly after I began teaching at Santa Clara University in 1987. My students, often initially baffled by the complexities of the primary texts we read, have appreciated Eagleton’s lucid and engaging primer on theories ranging from New Criticism and structuralism to psychoanalysis, as well as his openness about his own Marxist perspective. Since I have read other work by Eagleton over the years, I was …

Native Americans From The 1930s To The 1940s, Sarah Calnan

American Cultures Studies Student Works

The purpose of this assignment was to interpret and preserve a set of events composing Native American history, and by examining a thematic post card. This card served as both a historical document and a record of history for future historians. The card examined represented the Navajo during 1930s-1940s. The assignment consisted of three parts: constructing a description of the card, investigating the date of its production and conducting research on the Navajos during the time when the card was produced. This investigation led to truly eye-opening and inspirational discovery on the function of a postcard as a historical object …

Harnessing Complexity: Analysis Methodology And Ethical Framework To Facilitate Utilization Of Video Data In Evaluations, Kurt A. Wilson Apr 2014

Harnessing Complexity: Analysis Methodology And Ethical Framework To Facilitate Utilization Of Video Data In Evaluations, Kurt A. Wilson

Dissertations

Most evaluations in the nonprofit and international development sectors are conducted in contexts of complexity; the specific intervention being evaluated is but one of many interrelated factors influencing the desired outcome. Video data, especially when directly generated by program participants, can provide both exceptionally rich qualitative data as well as contextually-relevant feedback within complex systems. Despite these unique strengths and opportunities, video data is underutilized in the field of evaluation. This dissertation addresses specific barriers associated with video data through three inter-related papers: Papers one and two (Chapters II and III) present the findings from two interrelated studies of an …

Obama Suka Nasi Goreng! American Foreign Policy And Cultural Affinity With Indonesia, Mario Feola

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This essay will first focus on the historical legacy of United States foreign policy towards Indonesia, arguing that security exigencies and military-to-military linkages have historically driven the US-Indonesian relationship. I will also briefly explain the current diplomatic consensus of how best to “broaden” the US-Indonesia bilateral relationship. The second section will explain roadblocks towards strengthening the relationship, including strategic, economic and cultural barriers to cultural affinity. The third and final section will use public opinion polling data and collected primary source information in order to make recommendations about how to implement future US-led cultural programs in Indonesia.

Daily Bread And The Normative Ascription Of Cultural Value In Ahistorical Morocco, Patrick Kurth Apr 2014

Daily Bread And The Normative Ascription Of Cultural Value In Ahistorical Morocco, Patrick Kurth

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In his celebrated autobiographical narrative, For Bread Alone, Moroccan author Mohamed Choukri utilizes khubz, an Arabic term referring generically to bread, as a primary point of reference in describing his youthful experience of impoverishment, political marginalization, and emotive frustration in independent Morocco. Paired with anthropology’s universal and localized understandings of staple foods as embodiments of culturally constructed meaning, the populist accessibility and empathetic efficacy of Choukri’s literary idiom suggests that khubz functions as a powerful symbol of normative Moroccan social values. This composition makes an initial overture towards exploring that possibility, sketching out generalized correlations between khubzand …

Culture & Schizophrenia: How The Manifestation Of Schizophrenia Symptoms In Hue Reflects Vietnamese Culture, Rebecca Gaines Apr 2014

Culture & Schizophrenia: How The Manifestation Of Schizophrenia Symptoms In Hue Reflects Vietnamese Culture, Rebecca Gaines

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Although schizophrenia has the same essential cognitive basis in all people, the content of the hallucinations and delusions of patients varies significantly across the world. Schizophrenia is a culture-bound illness, which means that a difference in culture can influence how it manifests. Western societies tend to view schizophrenia symptoms as a medical issue, while Eastern societies treat it as a spiritual or supernatural phenomenon. Vietnam has many specific cultural factors rooted in collectivism and Confucian and Buddhism traditions that make sufferers of schizophrenia present drastically different symptoms than patients from Western societies. The role of family, ancestor veneration, traditional healing, …

The Role Of Social Relationships And Culture In The Cognitive Representation Of Emotions, Sharon Koh, Christie N. Scollon, Derrick Wirtz Apr 2014

The Role Of Social Relationships And Culture In The Cognitive Representation Of Emotions, Sharon Koh, Christie N. Scollon, Derrick Wirtz

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

There are individual and cultural differences in how memories of our emotions are cognitively represented. This article examines the cognitive representation of emotions in different cultures, as a result of emotional (in)consistency in different cultures. Using a continuous semantic priming task, we showed in two studies that individuals who were less emotionally consistent across relationships have stronger associations of their emotions within those relationships. Further, we found (in Study 2) that in a culture characterised by higher levels of emotional inconsistency across relationships (Singapore), stronger associations between emotions within relationships were found than in a culture characterised by emotional consistency …

Establishing Positive Relationships With Secondary Gifted Students And Students With Emotional/Behavioural Disorders: Giving These Diverse Learners What They Need, Trevor Capern, Lorraine Hammond

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The relationships between teachers and their students play a vital role in the creation of positive learning outcomes and environments for all learners, but particularly for those individuals with diverse needs. This study examined the teacher behaviours that contributed to positive student-teacher relationships with gifted secondary students (GS) (N=58) and with secondary students with Emotional/Behavioural Disorders (EBD) (N=40) in Western Australia. Valued teachers’ behaviours were identified through a mixed-methods approach that included surveys and student focus groups. The data indicated that GSs valued teacher behaviours that promoted cordial and friendly interactions between teachers and students to the extent that these …

Intelligence And Public Diplomacy: The Changing Tide, Jonathan Pinkus Apr 2014

Intelligence And Public Diplomacy: The Changing Tide, Jonathan Pinkus

Journal of Strategic Security

This article argues that the executive branches of governments will need to change the way that they employ intelligence for public diplomacy in the context of military action. Intelligence assessments that have been “politicized” through distortion and/or omission have led to poor decision-making and a decline in public trust. These propositions are demonstrated using the American and British public diplomacy that preceded the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a case study. This case is then compared to a second case study, the American and British public appeals for a strike on Syria following the 2013 Ghouta chemical attack. The article …

Dictation From Chrysanthemums, Kevin J. B. O'Conner Apr 2014

Dictation From Chrysanthemums, Kevin J. B. O'Conner

English Theses & Dissertations

Enclosed in this thesis is a collection of poems entitled Dictation From Chrysanthemums. Although the poems vary in scope and subject material. they convey unity: the unity that arises from the unknown, the unexplored, the undiscovered. To call the poems wholly "new" would be incorrect-after all they draw strongly on tradition as well as on the work of contemporary writers: Rimbaud, Yeats. John Ashbery. Philip Levine, Louise Gluck. To name all the influences would be impossible. but these are starting points. In addition. critical theory undergirds the project: everything from culture studies to theories of “hybridity" and "marginality." The end …

Peace Communication, Shekinah Jovan Mccullum-Lawrence Apr 2014

Peace Communication, Shekinah Jovan Mccullum-Lawrence

All Capstone Projects

Researching peace processes and negotiations can benefit all who engage in any and all types of relationships. Unless peace messages are communicated effectively between parties, peace may not be achieved. Spending time in a traditional classroom setting having college students define, discuss, and study peace will offer students the opportunity to define peace for themselves and how they wish to live peace and harmony in the world. Research and study in peace and communication can provide tools for peace building, which will enhance interpersonal and intrapersonal communication particularly in situations of conflict. This capstone project is the creation of an …
