Servitization Of Products As An Approach For Design-Driven Innovation, Ehsan Baha, Aylin Groenewoud, Koert Van Mensvoort Apr 2014

Servitization Of Products As An Approach For Design-Driven Innovation, Ehsan Baha, Aylin Groenewoud, Koert Van Mensvoort

ServDes Conference Series

In this paper we present how the meaning of a product can radically be innovated through add-on services and related service support products to the existing product instead of significantly redesigning it. We explore and investigate this assertion with an action-oriented case study using a research through design approach. Our research was done within the Dutch fashion industry together with a fashion label specialized in handmade knitwear. As a result two services; ‘Meet Your Knitter’ and ‘Our Garment’; were designed and added to an exclusive garment line. Early probing indicated an innovation in the meaning of the garments through servitization. …

The Implications Of Patrilineal Surnames, Raymond Smalara Apr 2014

The Implications Of Patrilineal Surnames, Raymond Smalara

UROP Posters

Current Western tradition dictates that a woman is to take her husband’s surname upon marriage and pass it along to her children. In order to explore the reasons behind today’s relatively unchanging adherence to this trend of patrilineal surnames, surveys on marital name choices as well as publications on historical origins of the family and of family names were consulted. Some view this patrilineal trend as sexist, citing societal pressure and the patriarchy as forces compelling women to follow the tradition. While these factors do affect surname trends, the oppressive roots of the patrilineal surname run deeper than sexism. Further …

Biomimetic Collagen-Apatite Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Zengmin Xia Apr 2014

Biomimetic Collagen-Apatite Composites For Bone Tissue Engineering, Zengmin Xia

Doctoral Dissertations

Natural bone has a complex hierarchical structure in which well-organized collagen fibrils are reinforced by apatite nano crystals. Inspired by bone, biomimetic collagen-apatite (Col-Ap) materials such as Col-Ap composite coatings and 3-D porous Col-Ap scaffold have been developed to enhance osteointegration between implant and host bone and facilitate bone repair and regeneration, respectively.

First, a bioactive Col-Ap composite coating was created on Ti6Al4V surface using a collagen-containing modified simulated body fluid (m-SBF). The coating achieved was a composite of bone-like carbonated apatite and collagen type I. The coating composition and morphology could be tailored by carefully adjusting the collagen concentration …

Tuning And Optimization Of Silk Fibroin Gels For Biomedical Applications, Michael Marin Apr 2014

Tuning And Optimization Of Silk Fibroin Gels For Biomedical Applications, Michael Marin

Theses and Dissertations

Biocompatible and biodegradable porous materials based on silk fibroin (SF), a natural protein derived from the Bombyx mori silkworm, are being extensively investigated for use in biomedical applications including mammalian cell bioprocessing, tissue engineering, and drug delivery applications. In this work, low-pressure, gaseous CO2 is used as an acidifying agent to fabricate SF hydrogels. This low-pressure CO2 acidification method is compared to an acidification method using high-pressure CO2 to demonstrate the effect of CO2 mass transfer and pressure on SF sol-gel kinetics. The effect of SF molecular weight on the sol-gel kinetics is determined using the low-pressure CO2 method. The …

Understanding How Service-Learning Impacts The Dispositions Of Teach For America Candidates And Their Students, Dymaneke Mitchell, Sy Karlin, Todd Alan Price

Faculty Publications

This article is based on a study that assessed Teach for America (TFA) candidates’ dispositions toward service-learning before and after they developed and implemented a service-learning project with their students. This article may be used to understand the significance of raising alternative certification teacher candidates’ community awareness so that they may stay longer as teachers while also becoming more acculturated to their school and neighborhood surroundings. The authors assert that candidates will become more effective through carefully planned service-learning experiences with community partners and become better service and public education advocates.

Navigating Service In Untenured Waters: What It Means To Be A Service-Learning Mentor, Mary Beth Schaefer, Tracy J. Cannova

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

This article describes how a university’s community service initiative helped facilitate a mentoring opportunity between a pharmacy student and an education professor. The professor takes up Boyer’s (1990) call to reconsider the priorities of the professoriate and addresses his question “What does it mean to be a scholar”? She explores her emerging identity as a scholar amid the competing obligations of the tenure track and applies a narrative form to relate and describe the service-learning study she undertook with the pharmacy student. She found that with institutional and collegial support, “service” can become personally and professionally transformative, offering benefits to …

"We Need To Put The People Back Into It:" A Participant-Driven Exploration Of Homelessness, Rebecca Long Apr 2014

"We Need To Put The People Back Into It:" A Participant-Driven Exploration Of Homelessness, Rebecca Long

Professional Projects

Homelessness is a phenomenon that has been studied for decades. The homeless have been counted, analyzed, recounted, identified, grouped, and categorized. Their profiles and trends have been stored in massive database systems such as the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS). A wealth of literature exists exploring who the homeless are and why they are homeless. What seems to be lacking in the homelessness literature is a thorough analysis of issues and solutions from the perspectives of the individuals who know homelessness the best—those who have experienced it. Structural issues such as housing and poverty are crucial components of any solution, …

The Lifestyle Of The "Urban Tribe", Nichelle D. Mcnabb, Rachel Friedman Apr 2014

The Lifestyle Of The "Urban Tribe", Nichelle D. Mcnabb, Rachel Friedman

Communications Faculty Scholarship

It was once the norm for people to get married in their early twenties,

perhaps right after college or maybe during college. Once married, there was

the need to start a family as soon as possible. However, nowadays, people

appear to be substituting (at least for this period of time after college) the

traditional family structure with a new one – the “urban tribe.” This paper

takes a critical approach to examining portrayals of rituals in “urban tribes”

in two television shows – Will & Grace and Friends in which we argue that

the progressive elements of these shows counter …

The Effects Of Popular Music In Television Advertisements On Branding, Amanda Jillson Apr 2014

The Effects Of Popular Music In Television Advertisements On Branding, Amanda Jillson

Honors Projects in Marketing

Have you ever found that the music a company chooses helps you understand its brand better, and did you eventually find yourself becoming a loyal customer? The goal of this project is to investigate whether or not connections like these occur and, if so, why they happen and what they mean for advertisers. More specifically, the study examines the influence of music in television advertisements on the last three steps of the brand building process: brand imagery, brand feelings, and brand resonance. The purpose of the research is to discover the extent to which popular songs used in television commercials …

“Performing Archive”: Identity, Participation, And Responsibility In The Ethnic Archive, David J. Kim, Jacqueline Wernimont Apr 2014

“Performing Archive”: Identity, Participation, And Responsibility In The Ethnic Archive, David J. Kim, Jacqueline Wernimont

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

This essay is an effort to reflect on the theoretical underpinnings and implications of both our three-month process and its product. In particular, we would like to consider how our digital book both publishes an archive and allows authors and readers to “perform archive” or enact “liveness” with the materials therein. We also want to use this as an occasion to raise questions regarding the liberal discourse of digital access that seems at times to overshadow opportunities for critical intervention at this moment of digital-archive fever. In particular, we want to bring the insights of critical race and ethnic studies …

“States Of Emergency”: Armed Youths And Mediations Of Islam In Northern Nigeria, Conerly Casey Ph.D. Apr 2014

“States Of Emergency”: Armed Youths And Mediations Of Islam In Northern Nigeria, Conerly Casey Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

On November 14, 2013, the U.S. Department of State labeled Boko Haram and a splinter group, Ansaru, operating in northern Nigeria, “foreign terrorist organizations” with links to al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). This designation is debatable, since the groups are diffuse, with tendencies to split or engage other armed groups into violent actions, primarily focused on Nigerian national and state politics and the implementation of shari’a criminal codes. This essay offers two analytic perspectives on “states of emergency” in Nigeria and the affective, violent forms of “justice” that armed young men employed during the 2000 implementation of shari’a criminal …

Assessing The Need For Graduate Global Education Programs In The United States, Krishna Bista Ed.D., Amaney Saleh Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Global education plays an increasingly important role in enriching students’ learning experiences in US institutions of higher education. Students are connected to the world through global culture, economics, politics, technology and immigration. This paper examines the perceptions of 305 graduate students and alumni concerning the need for global education programs in the United States. Participants shared their views of the importance of global education in understanding today’s economy, culture, and environment, while addressing our future needs and challenges. There were no significant statistical differences between the perceptions of graduate students and alumni or between those of international and American students …

The Power Of Uncertainty: The Neoliberal Quest For Profit In Spain, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D. Apr 2014

The Power Of Uncertainty: The Neoliberal Quest For Profit In Spain, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Using as a case study the consequences of the recent generalized economic crisis in Spain and Europe (2008-14), I propose to analyze the role of uncertainty as a key and recurrent ingredient needed by market economies to generate high levels of profitability at the cost of extremely high levels of social inequality. The present article examines the relationships between crises and uncertainty as socially constructed realities that have been instrumental in the political reshaping of entire societies. The “crisis” narrative has succeeded in explaining extreme levels of profit generation as economic “failure” and, consequently, in legitimating further profit by dismantling …

South Africa In The Brics: Soft Power Balancing And Instrumentalization, Hany Besada, Evren Tok Ph.D. Apr 2014

South Africa In The Brics: Soft Power Balancing And Instrumentalization, Hany Besada, Evren Tok Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper investigates South Africa’s participation in the BRICS formation and the implications of its inclusion for the country, the continent, and global governance. It argues that by joining the BRICS grouping, South Africa is reinforcing neoliberalism in Africa, with markets being liberalized across the continent, trade and investment becoming the focus, and social and environmental protection remaining a distant concern. Meanwhile, other countries, particularly China and Russia, are instrumentalizing the forum to get what they want out of African countries without formalizing the grouping’s policies and effecting change to global institutions at the global level, as was initially promised. …
