A Content Analysis Of The Chinese Destinations Portrayals In The National Geographic From 1980-2013, Qinran Pan

Open Access Theses

With the development of Chinese tourism during the past few decades, China has become one of the top destinations of American travelers. National Geographic Magazine is a representative in foreign destination portrayals. However, there was little research on the portrayal of Chinese destinations in U.S. magazines. This research paper was aimed at providing a consensus of Chinese destination portrayals in National Geographic, using the method of content analysis. All 111 articles in National Geographic from the years 1980 to 2013 were studied, which yielded 896 photographs. The cultural aspect of Chinese destinations was a dominant theme used by most of …

Diversity In Times Of Austerity: Documenting Resistance In The Academy, David Moscowitz, Terri Jett, Terri Carney, Tamara Leech, Ann M. Savage

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

What happens to feminism in the university is parallel to what happens to feminism in other venues under economic restructuring: while the impoverished nation is forced to cut social services and thereby send women back to the hierarchy of the family, the academy likewise reduces its footprint in interdisciplinary structures and contains academic feminists back to the hierarchy of departments and disciplines. When the family and the department become powerful arbiters of cultural values, women and feminist academics by and large suffer: they either accept a diminished role or are pushed to compete in a system they recognize as antithetical …

Evidence That Bdnf Regulates Heart Rate By A Mechanism Involving Increased Brainstem Parasympathetic Neuron Excitability, Ruqian Wan, Letitia A. Weigand, Ryan Bateman, Kathleen Griffioen, David Mendelowitz, Mark P. Mattson May 2014

Evidence That Bdnf Regulates Heart Rate By A Mechanism Involving Increased Brainstem Parasympathetic Neuron Excitability, Ruqian Wan, Letitia A. Weigand, Ryan Bateman, Kathleen Griffioen, David Mendelowitz, Mark P. Mattson

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Autonomic control of heart rate is mediated by cardioinhibitory parasympathetic cholinergic neurons located in the brainstem and stimulatory sympathetic noradrenergic neurons. During embryonic development the survival and cholinergic phenotype of brainstem autonomic neurons is promoted by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). We now provide evidence that BDNF regulates heart rate by a mechanism involving increased brainstem cardioinhibitory parasympathetic activity. Mice with a BDNF haploinsufficiency exhibit elevated resting heart rate, and infusion of BDNF intracerebroventricularly reduces heart rate in both wild-type and BDNF+/− mice. The atropine-induced elevation of heart rate is diminished in BDNF+/− mice and is restored by BDNF infusion, whereas …

La Mentalidad Rupturista De Alfonso Vallejo Durante La Transición Política Española (1975-1982): Análisis De Su Obra Cangrejos De Pared, José Leonardo Ontiveros G.

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

After A Century Of Injustice: Moving Toward Turkish Recognition Of The Armenian Genocide, Ashley Kalagian Blunt May 2014

After A Century Of Injustice: Moving Toward Turkish Recognition Of The Armenian Genocide, Ashley Kalagian Blunt

Peace and Conflict Studies

Nearly one hundred years have passed since the Armenian genocide, which prefaced and in some ways encouraged the Holocaust – yet the Turkish government continues to deny the genocide and uses political manipulation to prevent its recognition by others. The denial’s history has been one of collaborative repression, but in recent years Turkish voices have joined with Armenians’ in the struggle for recognition; collaborative struggle, particularly in recognition of shared history, may represent the best chance to pressure Turkey to federally recognize the genocide. This paper explores the machinations of the denial and its significance in the twenty-first century, as …

Vulnerable Undocumented Mexican Immigrants In California From 1986 To 2012, Magdalena Galvan Rodriguez May 2014

Vulnerable Undocumented Mexican Immigrants In California From 1986 To 2012, Magdalena Galvan Rodriguez

Senior Theses

Immigration from Mexico into the United States has contributed to the marginalization of undocumented immigrants in American society. This thesis will analyze the reasons undocumented immigrants believe undocumented immigration is the only solution for their economic hardships. Along with the examination of immigration legislation, beginning with the 1986 Amnesty to 2012 laws affecting the undocumented immigrant community, this thesis will examine why immigrants from Mexico decide to immigrate into the United States and join certain industries within California’s labor force. Socioeconomic impacts of certain laws targeted toward the undocumented immigrants will also be studied. Finally, investigation on why many undocumented …

A Historical Account Of The Conceptual Evolution Of Satan In The Abrahamic Belief Traditions, Hanan Huneidi May 2014

A Historical Account Of The Conceptual Evolution Of Satan In The Abrahamic Belief Traditions, Hanan Huneidi

Senior Theses

This paper shows a historical account of the development of the Satan persona in the Abrahamic belief traditions beginning with early Judaism in which Satan evolves most vastly from beginning as merely an action verb to ending as a tempter of man, then moving into the Christian New Testament evil entity personified as a direct opponent to Jesus, and finally ending with Islam’s perspective of a leader of the Jinn.

Chinese Calligraphy: An American Chinese's Perspective, Bridget Gross Duann

Senior Theses

Humanities is the study of culture, history, literature and philosophy. Through a journey of self-‐revelation and research, Chinese calligraphy will be introduced as more than just a form of art as Westerners see it. Having a basic practical knowledge of Calligraphy, I’ve researched and embellished upon that knowledge. Calligraphy is a long known form of writing, with many styles. Calligraphers from Ancient China reveal their feelings that it is an expression of who they are.

Fictional Reality Or Real Fictionality? The Relationship Between Fictional Texts And Psychological Perceptions Of Societies In Conflict, Yuval Benziman May 2014

Fictional Reality Or Real Fictionality? The Relationship Between Fictional Texts And Psychological Perceptions Of Societies In Conflict, Yuval Benziman

Peace and Conflict Studies

The study of groups’ behaviors in conflicts has shown that societies favor the in-group, delegitimize the out-group, and provide explanations for members of society as to why the conflict erupted and how to cope with it. It has been claimed that societies share a psychological in-group repertoire, an ethos of conflict, and that they develop a culture of conflict. As part of societies’ mechanisms, culture and fictional products – films, books and plays – have an important role in shaping the way people perceive, think and act in conflicts. Yet fictional texts, by their mere characteristics, provide a discourse which …

Evolution Of The Un-Wed Mother, Carol Jean Obergfell May 2014

Evolution Of The Un-Wed Mother, Carol Jean Obergfell

Senior Theses

According to the National Vital Statistics System, since the 1980’s, there has been a dramatic increase of unmarried pregnancies, close to an 80% increase. Drawing predominantly on historical information, and interviews with a multi-generational group of unmarried mothers, my research will show that although there are socio-economic factors which contribute to this phenomenon, the overwhelming factor is the increase in individualism, and that over the decades, unmarried women have evolved. With the release of societal pressures that once deemed them “fallen women” they no longer feel that they have to be married in order to provide a good life for …

Epigenetic Modifications Associated With Aortic Remodeling In Hyperhomocysteinemia., Nithya Narayanan May 2014

Epigenetic Modifications Associated With Aortic Remodeling In Hyperhomocysteinemia., Nithya Narayanan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is prevalent in hypertensive patients and is an independent risk factor for aortic pathologies. HHcy is known to cause an imbalance between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) leading to accumulation of collagen in the aorta resulting in stiffness and development of hypertension. Although the exact mechanism of extracellular matrix remodeling (ECM) is unclear, emerging evidence implicates epigenetic regulation involving DNA methylation. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether inhibition of DNA methylation reduces high blood pressure by regulating aortic ECM remodeling in HHcy. Methods: In the first set of experiments, we …

Ceramic Technology, Women, And Settlement Patterns In Late Archaic Southwestern Idaho, Jessica A. Dougherty May 2014

Ceramic Technology, Women, And Settlement Patterns In Late Archaic Southwestern Idaho, Jessica A. Dougherty

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research employs a sample of archaeological sites from three ecological zones to investigate the mobility strategies of hunter-gatherer groups in Late Archaic southwestern Idaho. The sample sites are organized into site types based on an independent evaluation of site components and existing site records. Ceramic assemblages at each site were analyzed to quantify the investment in ceramic technology, as a proxy for mobility. These measures were then compared to expectations generated from three proposed mobility patterns for hunter-gatherer groups in southwestern Idaho. Some of the predictions were met and these data allude to an archaeological record with a multitude …

“Why Do You Sing To Me?”: A Case Study Of Form And Function Of Children's Songs In The Caribbean Diaspora Culture In South Florida, Finley Walker May 2014

“Why Do You Sing To Me?”: A Case Study Of Form And Function Of Children's Songs In The Caribbean Diaspora Culture In South Florida, Finley Walker

Masters Theses

How does a child gain a musical identity? Music resides in the depths of personhood. Even before birth we are all touched by its power. Music is a language in that it communicates--thoughts, feelings, desires, information, and more. As children grow physically and mentally, they also grow musically. A person's musical development will be directly influenced by their culture and family. The following qualitative study looks at the form and function of children's songs, specifically children's songs from the diasporic Caribbean culture in South Florida. Twenty-one interviews, including 53 participants, were conducted to see how children's songs might play a …

Developing An Intentional Mentoring Model For Disciple Formation At The Mayfair Church Of Christ, Jason Bybee

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project to lead a team in the development of an intentional mentoring model for disciple formation at the Mayfair Church of Christ. This intervention involved the team members in a series of sessions during September and October 2013. Project sessions were designed to provide participants an intentional mentoring experience through exposure to four core practices: exploration of the biblical text, appreciative inquiry exercises, communal sharing, and prayer. Sessions were informed by (1) an understanding of discipleship as following behind Jesus and walking alongside our fellow sojourners, (2) the nature of …

Lost In Translation: Impediments To The Homogenous Interpretation Of Ifrs Translations, Addison N. Scott May 2014

Lost In Translation: Impediments To The Homogenous Interpretation Of Ifrs Translations, Addison N. Scott

Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses

In order to satisfy the financial needs of an increasingly globalized world, regulators and accounting professionals have pursued the harmonization of national accounting standards through International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). These standards have been adopted in more than 100 countries and are currently available in 47 languages. When financial information is prepared in accordance with IFRS, users of that information may assume that the application of the accounting rules is consistent across countries. In actuality, many differences in interpretation and application can occur because of the difficulties inherent in translating the standards from one language to another. Inconsistent application of …

The Heartland Of The Democracy: Presidential Politics In Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1860-64, Benjamin Petersheim

Masters Theses

Oley Township, founded in 1740, in Berks County, Pennsylvania holds a special place in the commonwealth's history because of its unique religious, political, and cultural history. With hundreds of historic buildings and its Pennsylvania German heritage, the heart of the Oley Valley continues to attract colonial and Pennsylvania German historians from great distances so that they are able to analyze and research its rich heritage. Indeed, the area was designated as a National Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and much of the farmland has been preserved through land trusts and historical preservation efforts. Many …

Contextualizing Subjectivity: Speaking (Back To) Colonialism In Jamaica Kincaid’S Annie John, Lucy, And A Small Place, Sierra Holmes May 2014

Contextualizing Subjectivity: Speaking (Back To) Colonialism In Jamaica Kincaid’S Annie John, Lucy, And A Small Place, Sierra Holmes

Masters Theses

The narrators of Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John, Lucy, and A Small Place all struggle to form a coherent sense of self while living within the colonial ideology that objectifies them and denies them identities as speaking subjects. In this thesis, Julia Kristeva’s theories of language and subject formation are used to explain why and how the narrators’ subjectivity is limited by colonial discourse. Particular attention is given to the way in which the narrators’ relationships with their mothers both threaten and necessitate their emergence into Kristeva’s symbolic order of language, and therefore into the colonial discourse community. The thesis also …

Breaking Bad: On The Western Genre And Audience Reception, Marisa Mazart May 2014

Breaking Bad: On The Western Genre And Audience Reception, Marisa Mazart

English

“Breaking Bad: on the Western Genre and Audience Reception” examines the recent TV series Breaking Bad making use of cultural scholar Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding theories in order to better understand what meaning is imbued into the series and what meaning is extracted by the audiences. By treating Breaking Bad as a cultural artifact moving across what Hall defines as the parts of the circuit of culture – production, identification, representation, consumption and regulation – I will be able to answer the question of why the show is so popular and to consider the significance of that popularity. While …
