From Cultural Industries To Creative Industries And Back? Towards Clarifying Theory And Rethinking Policy, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, I draw attention to the complexities and confusions in the shift in discourse and praxis from "culture industry" to "cultural industries" and then "creative industries." I examine how this "creative turn" is fraught with challenges, highlighting seven issues in particular: (i) the difficulties in defining and scoping the creative industries; (ii) the challenges in measuring the economic benefits creative industries bring; (iii) the risk that creative industries neglect genuine creativity/culture; (iv) the utopianization of "creative labour"; (v) the risk of valorizing and promoting external expertise over local small- and medium-scale enterprises in the building of "creative industries"; …
Symbolic Misery And Aesthetics- Bernard Stiegler, Noel Fitzpatrick
Symbolic Misery And Aesthetics- Bernard Stiegler, Noel Fitzpatrick
Articles
In this article I will deal with the development of a theory of aesthetics within the work of the French contemporary philosopher Bernard Stiegler with particular reference to his concept of symbolic misery. Rather than give an extensive account of Bernard Stiegler’s aesthetics this article will focus on some key concepts mobilized in the definition and analysis of symbolic misery. Firstly, I will argue that Stiegler’s understanding of the aesthetic comes from an expanded notion of aesthesis, where the political and the aesthetic are mobilized together. In this regard I will interrogate some key concepts in his work Symbolic Misery …
Beauty And The Beastly Prime Minister, John J. Su
Beauty And The Beastly Prime Minister, John J. Su
English Faculty Research and Publications
This essay examines the so-called “turn to beauty” in British fiction since the 1990s as a response to the political and social consequences of Thatcherism. Focusing primarily on four texts—Jonathan Coe’s What a Carve Up! (1994), Julian Barnes’s England, England, (1998), Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty (2004), and Zadie Smith’s On Beauty (2005)—this essay argues that conceptions of beauty and beastliness delineate possible boundaries to the neoliberalism with which Thatcherism is associated. Two distinct phases of the beauty/beastliness rhetoric are identified: an ironized utopianism in the 1990s; an ambivalent embrace of global humanism in the 2000s.
The Mad Science Of Hip-Hop: History, Technology, And Poetics Of Hip-Hop's Music, 1975-1991, Patrick Rivers
The Mad Science Of Hip-Hop: History, Technology, And Poetics Of Hip-Hop's Music, 1975-1991, Patrick Rivers
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1979, the first commercial recordings of hip-hop music were released. The music's transition from the parks and clubs of the Bronx to recorded media resulted in hip-hop music being crafted and mediated in a recording studio before reaching the ears of listeners. In this dissertation I present a comprehensive investigation into the history of the instrumental component of hip-hop music heard on recordings, commonly referred to as beats. My historical narrative is formed by: the practices involved in the creation of hip-hop beats; the technologies that facilitated and defined those practices; and the debates around these two aspects that …
Clothing And Social Movements: The Politics Of Dressing In Colonized Tibet, Dicky Yangzom
Clothing And Social Movements: The Politics Of Dressing In Colonized Tibet, Dicky Yangzom
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study examines the relationship between clothing and social movements. Taking the case of Lhakar in the Tibetan Freedom Movement, it explores how Tibetans in Tibet and those in exile imagine national belonging. Second, it delineates how the multiple uses of clothing, both by the colonizing state and the colonial movement articulates its importance in serving as a symbolic boundary in nationalist identity formation. Lastly, using methods of visual analysis, the research explains how the convergence between clothing, social movements, and social media creates a non-violent transnational social movement.
Policy Partners In The Neoliberal Age: Corresponding School And Prison Reforms Since 1970, Jeremy Paul Benson
Policy Partners In The Neoliberal Age: Corresponding School And Prison Reforms Since 1970, Jeremy Paul Benson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a comparative policy study of changes in education and incarceration of the past 40 years. Following national and global trends, New York City saw public school and carceral policies converge as the city experienced massive deindustrialization and governmental cutbacks while its political economy shifted to one driven by finance, investment, real estate, and the growth of a low-wage service sector. These changes dramatically increased economic inequality across racial lines, and spurred the intimate linkage of public education and state incarceration as institutional tools for the mass management of low-income communities of color. Following from a growing policy …
Why Does That Old Man Dance? : Indigenous Cultural Festivals And The Possibilities For Life, Lisa Slater
Why Does That Old Man Dance? : Indigenous Cultural Festivals And The Possibilities For Life, Lisa Slater
Talking Heads Seminar Series
In this paper, I examine Indigenous cultural festivals as creative commitments to the ontological primacy of land and non-western sociality, which emerges in a deeply intercultural world dominated by settler liberalism. Like many Indigenous festivals, those I am examining - Garma (NT), Laura Aboriginal Dance (FNQ), KALACC festivals (WA) and Milpirri (NT). - have a similar purpose: to maintain and strengthen culture. Yet it is Indigenous culture that worries so many people in the mainstream. A hope and aim of these events, I argue, is to compose anti-colonial relations, arguably whereby ‘culture’ is not a commodity to be scrutinized and …
Dionysian Biopolitics: Karl Kerényi’S Concept Of Indestructible Life, Kristóf Fenyvesi
Dionysian Biopolitics: Karl Kerényi’S Concept Of Indestructible Life, Kristóf Fenyvesi
Comparative Philosophy
Scholar of religion Karl Kerényi’s last book, Dionysos, is a grand attempt at reinterpreting ζωη (zoe), the Greek concept of indestructible life, which he distinguishes from βίος (bios), finite life. In Kerényi’s view, the meaning and sensual experience of zoe was expressed in its richest form in the Cretan beginnings of the cult of Dionysos. The major characteristics of this cult, as Kerényi describes, were beyond the cultural, political, and sexual limits of the Christian interpretations of life and nature. Searching for modern analogies to zoe, Kerényi explains the idea in relation to molecular biology’s minimum definition of life. Despite …
The Immersive Medium: Art, Flow, And Video Games, Christopher M. Yalen
The Immersive Medium: Art, Flow, And Video Games, Christopher M. Yalen
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this article, the question of whether or not video games could be considered art is explored, as well as what this means for video games as cultural products. Using an interdisciplinary approach, I suggest that there are some games we can consider “art”, and that these games are not only different aesthetically speaking, but are also different from a media-effects standpoint. The article consists of three main sections, an aesthetic review, a content analysis, and a pilot study. In the aesthetic review, I employ different perspectives from aesthetic philosophy in order to come up with criteria for what an …
Beyond The "Adaptation Paradigm": The "Spreadable Literature" And Its Contemporary Characteristics, Lulu Zhou
Beyond The "Adaptation Paradigm": The "Spreadable Literature" And Its Contemporary Characteristics, Lulu Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the era of fast changing multimedia environment, the problem of the literariness and its formats of existence and communication require new theoretical approaches. On the basis of empirical observations of some concrete cases in mainland China and abroad, this paper proposes the concept of "spreadable literature" to expand the theoretical vision of the mainstreamed "adaptation paradigm." The "adaptation paradigm" focuses on the studies of film and televisual screen adaptations of literary works and follows the linear communication logic, which not only eschews the strong tradition of the spreadability of ancient folk literature but also fails to help us understand …

Children's Self-Representations, Cultural Developmental Goals, And Social Behavior In Mexican And Euro-American Children, Mary Bancroft
Children's Self-Representations, Cultural Developmental Goals, And Social Behavior In Mexican And Euro-American Children, Mary Bancroft
Psychology ETDs
The current study investigated the development of cultural self-concepts in children and relationships between self-concept, social behavior and maternal parenting and cultural values. Preschool and kindergarten Mexican and Euro-American children (N =56) participated. Children described themselves in response to open-ended questions, mothers completed self-report measures and teachers completed questionnaires regarding childrens social behavior with peers and authority figures. Overall, significant differences were found in children's self-descriptions between the two groups. Mexican children's self-descriptions were balanced between private, relational, and descriptions of significant others whereas Euro-American children's self-descriptions were dominated by private descriptors such as personal attributes, preferences and possessions. Contrary …

Expression Of Peroxiredoxin 1 And 4 Promotes Human Lung Cancer Malignancy, Hong Jiang, Lisha Wu, Murli Mishra, Hedy A. Chawsheen, Qiou Wei
Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications
Members of the Peroxiredoxin (Prx) family are major cellular antioxidants that scavenge hydrogen peroxide and play essential roles in oxidative stress and cell signaling. 2-Cys Prxs, including Prx1, 2, 3 and 4, have been indicated in multiple oncogenic signaling pathways and thus may contribute to various processes of cancer development. The significance of 2-Cys Prxs in lung cancer development and their biological function in signal transduction have not been fully investigated. In this study we analyzed the expression of 2-Cys Prxs in lung cancer, and examined their levels of expression in a variety of cell lines established from human lung …

Mo Yan In Context: Nobel Laureate And Global Storyteller, Angelica Duran, Yuhan Huang
Purdue University Press Books
In 2012 the Swedish Academy announced that Mo Yan had received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work that “with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history, and the contemporary.” The announcement marked the first time a resident of mainland China had ever received the award. This is the first English-language study of the Chinese writer’s work and influence, featuring essays from scholars in a range of disciplines, from both China and the United States. Its introduction, twelve articles, and epilogue aim to deepen and widen critical discussions of both a specific literary author and the globalization of Chinese literature …
Socioeconomic Status And Cognitive Outcomes: Mediating Role Of The Home Environment, Jennifer Gwendolyn Benson
Socioeconomic Status And Cognitive Outcomes: Mediating Role Of The Home Environment, Jennifer Gwendolyn Benson
Psychology ETDs
Low socioeconomic status (SES) in early childhood is associated with increased risk for deficits in cognitive development. Early home environment quality has been shown to mediate between SES and cognition in toddlers from low-income families. This study explored the mediation of home environment quality between SES and cognition in socioeconomically diverse toddlers. 26 families completed a HOME interview (Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment). Child cognitive ability was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. The Monte Carlo method for testing indirect effects was used to test for mediation of HOME standardized total scores between SES and developmental …
Coping Strategies Mediate The Relationship Between Alexithymia And Health, Jennifer Bernard
Coping Strategies Mediate The Relationship Between Alexithymia And Health, Jennifer Bernard
Psychology ETDs
Alexithymia, a construct of impaired emotion processing, has been shown to negatively impact mental health and is associated with higher physical symptom reporting. This study examined the relationship between alexithymia, coping, and health in a large ethnically diverse sample of undergraduate university students (N = 605; 65% female; 45% Hispanic). Exploratory factor analyses were conducted to create a latent measurement model for emotional approach, active coping and avoidant coping. Structural equation modeling was used to test a hypothesized structural model for coping mediating the effects of alexithymia on mental and physical health. Results indicated the association between alexithymia and negative …
Remapping The U.S. "Southwest": Early Mexican American Literature And The Production Of Transnational Counterspaces, 1885-1958, Diana Noreen Rivera
Remapping The U.S. "Southwest": Early Mexican American Literature And The Production Of Transnational Counterspaces, 1885-1958, Diana Noreen Rivera
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation brings to light a legacy of Mexican American spatial resilience that troubles Anglo-centric constructions of the Southwest, its history, and cultural formation as a byproduct of westward expansionism. This project argues that early Mexican American writers offer an alternative paradigm of transnationalism for understanding the literature, culture, and geography of the U.S. Southwest as it has been imagined in Anglo American cultural production about the region. For early Mexican American writers, the Southwest was not a quaint literary region but a space of historic transnational zones of contact, commerce, and cultural geography where they maintained degrees of agency. …
Accountability And Its Metaphors: From Forum To Agora And Bazaar, Ciarán O’Kelly, Melvin J. Dubnick
Accountability And Its Metaphors: From Forum To Agora And Bazaar, Ciarán O’Kelly, Melvin J. Dubnick
Faculty Publications
In this paper we seek to develop a ‘relational’ perspective on accountability and on so-called ‘unaccountability.’. We focus on Mark Bovens’s use of the forum metaphor in his accountability model, arguing that his relational perspective is too narrow. We advocate instead a far broader and more fundamental engagement with the idea of relational accountability. Expanding the metaphors, we point to two other accountability spaces: ‘agora,’ a primordial accountability space and ‘bazaar,’ an emergent accountability space rooted in ground-level exchange between different actors. Assertions about ‘unaccountability,’ we argue, very often reflect a failure to appreciate the fundamentally relational nature of accountability: …
後Cepa 時期香港電影懷舊想像中的「本土」身份書寫, Dan Shen
後Cepa 時期香港電影懷舊想像中的「本土」身份書寫, Dan Shen
Lingnan Theses

Material Embodiments, Queer Visualities: Presenting Disability In American Public History, Andrew B. Marcum
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation examines the presentation of disability at three of the most popular sites for the consumption of public history in the United States including the U.S. Capitol, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. I de-construct the cultural and historical narratives and discourses of disability circulating at these sites and offer a visual culture analysis of the images, artifacts, and statuary found at each of them. My study is informed principally by the theories and methods of queer disability studies, visual culture studies, and cultural studies critiques of neoliberalism. I consider how …

Showing The Unsayable: Trauma And Juxtaposition In Persepolis And A Child's Life And Other Stories, Lauranne Poharec
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis focuses on two comic books by women that interweave personal trauma with the trauma of historical events: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, which explores coming of age against the background of memory of the Iranian Revolution, and A Childs Life and Other Stories by Phoebe Gloeckner, which explores parent-child incest and coming of age in the wake of the American sexual revolution. It argues that Satrapi and Gloeckner, two women comic artists, push the limits of the comics medium and of memoir by using juxtaposition — of alternative illustration styles, of what is seen and what is not seen, …
