Science Youth Action Research: Promoting Critical Science Literacy Through Relevance And Agency, Elizabeth Coleman Jan 2014

Science Youth Action Research: Promoting Critical Science Literacy Through Relevance And Agency, Elizabeth Coleman

Dissertations

This three-article dissertation presents complementary perspectives on Science Youth Action Research (Sci-YAR), a K-12 curriculum designed to emphasize relevance and agency to promote youth's science learning. In Sci-YAR, youth conduct action research projects to better understand science-related issues in their lives, schools, or communities, while they simultaneously document, analyze, and reflect upon their own practices as researchers. The first article defines Sci-YAR and argues for its potential to enhance youth's participation as citizens in a democratic society. The second article details findings from a case study of youth engaged in Sci-YAR, describing how the curriculum enabled and constrained youth's identity …

The Role Of Spirituality/Religion As A Coping Mechanism During Treatment For Disordered Eating, David Franczyk Jan 2014

The Role Of Spirituality/Religion As A Coping Mechanism During Treatment For Disordered Eating, David Franczyk

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of spirituality/religion used as a coping mechanism during treatment for disordered eating. Given the mixed outcome results of current therapeutic and pharmacological treatment methods for disordered eating, it is important to investigate other factors which may influence the treatment process. This study evaluated the role of spirituality/religion used as a coping mechanism among 61 patients who were admitted into an eating disorder treatment program and then discharged over a period of 15 months. In this quantitative study, the Brief RCOPE measure was self-administered at admission to determine the levels of …

"Other Than Dead": Queering Vampires In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Interview With The Vampire, And The Gilda Stories, Megan E. Gianniny Jan 2014

"Other Than Dead": Queering Vampires In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Interview With The Vampire, And The Gilda Stories, Megan E. Gianniny

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines three diverse vampire narratives from around the 1990s, arguing that the liminal figure of the vampire, forever in between life and death, is also then well-positioned to queer norms around gender, sexuality, and relationships. This queering, however, manifests differently in each narrative. My analysis looks at each of these three narratives in turn, while also considering how each text’s placement as mainstream or not mainstream affected the manifestation of the vampires’ queering.

Interaction Of Isoflavones And Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Seed Extract On Vasoactivity Of Bovine Mesenteric Vasculature, Yang Jia Jan 2014

Interaction Of Isoflavones And Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Seed Extract On Vasoactivity Of Bovine Mesenteric Vasculature, Yang Jia

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Endophyte-infected tall fescue produces many ergot alkaloids, which have been shown to be vasoconstrictive in various vessel types of bovine. On the other hand, substantial evidence has been reported on the vasodilative effects of formononetin and biochanin A in different vessel types in humans and rats. So, a study was conducted using mesenteric vasculature collected from heifers shortly after slaughter. After 2-h incubation with formononetin (F), biochanin A (B), or an ergovaline-containing tall fescue seed extract (EXT) and their combinations, vessels were mounted in a multi-myograph to determine their ergotamine-induced contractility. Results indicated that F and B at 1 × …

Eat It: Sex, Food And Women's Writing [Book Review], Marc Ouellette Jan 2014

Eat It: Sex, Food And Women's Writing [Book Review], Marc Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

Simply put, Eat It: Sex, Food and Women's Writing surpasses its rather immodest claims. This is no mean feat, for the editors allow that they have collected short stories, nonfiction shorts and poetry that, as the back claims offers, hinge "on the carnal." More than that, the gathered works purportedly address the ways in which experiencing food entails nothing short of "power, biology, social obligation, experimentation, nourishment, pain and pleasure." The authors treat the topics, ranging from the politics of potatoes to tricks for field dressing deer, with a blend of seriousness and humour befitting the material. What becomes clear …

Cultivating Human-Nature Relationships: The Role Of Parents And Primary Caregivers In Development Of Environmental Identity, Anne E. Bremer Jan 2014

Cultivating Human-Nature Relationships: The Role Of Parents And Primary Caregivers In Development Of Environmental Identity, Anne E. Bremer

Pitzer Senior Theses

Industrialized societies have been characterized by a trend of disconnecting humans from our natural environment, leading to environmental and psychological damage. Therefore, in order to work toward repairing such damage, reconnecting humans and the natural environment is critical. One way of conceptualizing human-nature relationships is through “environmental identity,” a term that describes self-identification as part of a larger ecosystem, aesthetic, spiritual, or recreational enjoyment of nature, environmentally positive behaviors, and a social, political, or moral identification with environmentalists. Despite the literature having emphasized childhood experience in nature as being essential to the development of an environmental identity, parental influence in …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The aging process is associated with the development of several chronic diseases. White adipose tissue (WAT) may play a central role in age-related disease onset and progression due to declines in adipogenesis with advancing age. Recent reports indicate that the accumulation of senescent progenitor cells may be involved in age-related WAT dysfunction. Growth hormone (GH) action has profound effects on adiposity and metabolism and is known to influence lifespan. In the present study we tested the hypothesis that GH activity would predict age-related WAT dysfunction and accumulation of senescent cells. We found that long-lived GH-deficient and -resistant mice have reduced …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Alpha- and beta-amanitins are the main toxins of the poisonous Amanita phalloides mushroom. Although there are many studies available concerning alpha-amanitin, there are limited data about beta-amanitin in the literature. Therefore, this study is aimed at comparing the toxic effects of alpha- and beta-amanitin on the MCF-7 cell line. Materials and methods: The alpha- and beta-amanitins used for this research were purified from Amanita phalloides by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The MCF-7 breast cancer cell line was used, and specific concentrations of the toxins (100, 10, 1, 0.1, and 0.01 µg/mL) were applied to the cells. The MTT test was …

Why The Undead Arcade?, Carly A. Kocurek, Samuel Tobin Jan 2014

Why The Undead Arcade?, Carly A. Kocurek, Samuel Tobin

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In 2009, Stride Gum launched a campaign to “Save the Arcades,” offering $25,000 to an arcade on the brink of closure through a convoluted contest. Arcade fans could play a retro reboot game on the campaign’s site, then assign points to one of the four arcades deemed eligible for the competition. In the rhetoric of the campaign, arcades are an endangered species, each arcade an outpost of something precious and threatened. Much of contemporary gaming culture revels in a nostalgic pull for so-called classic arcades, and players’ desire to validate through remembrances of games past helps drive and …

The Midway In The Museum: Arcades, Art, And The Challenge Of Displaying Play, Jennifer Dewinter Jan 2014

The Midway In The Museum: Arcades, Art, And The Challenge Of Displaying Play, Jennifer Dewinter

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Arcade games are increasingly being presented in museum spaces for both contemplation and play. By placing arcades into the museum, curators are creating narratives about the history of games, about the cultural value of these artifacts, and increasingly, about the artistic merit of computer games. However, when arcades enter the museum space, a tension arises between the critical distance demanded by museums—a distance needed to contemplate the curatorial vision of an object—and the closeness and irreverence demanded by play. To this tension, I argue museum spaces bring together these contemporary objects as part of a discourse concerning a postmodern anxiety …

Innovation, Imitation, And The Continued Importance Of Vintage Video Games, Brendan Gaughen Jan 2014

Innovation, Imitation, And The Continued Importance Of Vintage Video Games, Brendan Gaughen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

“Innovation, Imitation, and the Continued Importance of Video Games” frames the development of the video game industry as one defined by a dialectic of innovation and imitation between arcades and home gaming. These complexities are simplified if not completely overlooked in the numerous game compilations, emulator collections, and plug and play devices, all of which have an effect on the nostalgia of players. The industry experimented with innovations in graphics and immersive gameplay throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, at which point compilations of classic video games (generally speaking, pre-1983) started being released for home consoles and in arcades. The …

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Veteran Gamer: The Canonization And Commodification Of Nostalgia In Anamanaguchi's 8-Bit Video Game Soundtrack, Megan Mckittrick Jan 2014

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Veteran Gamer: The Canonization And Commodification Of Nostalgia In Anamanaguchi's 8-Bit Video Game Soundtrack, Megan Mckittrick

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

While there are many contemporary 8-bit-inspired video game scores, the article points to the original soundtrack for the 2010 Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World: The Game (Ubisoft, 2010) as an example of game music canon formation, arguing that Anamanaguchi designs their music to hail gamers who share their sense of nostalgia, referred to as veteran, aging, or mature gamers. Anamanaguchi not only canonizes 8-bit music by hailing veteran gamers; they commodify it, as well. Recognizing the market for this style of music, they employ what Christina Baade and Paul Aitken have described as the nostalgia aesthetic to sell their music …

After Life History: An Interview With Raiford Guins On His "Game After: A Cultural Study Of Video Game Afterlife", Samuel Tobin Jan 2014

After Life History: An Interview With Raiford Guins On His "Game After: A Cultural Study Of Video Game Afterlife", Samuel Tobin

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Raiford Guins is a professor of culture and technology in the Department of Cultural Analysis and Theory at Stony Brook University, he is also a curator of the William A. Higinbotham Game Studies Collection there. In his new book Game After, Guins draws on both of his professional roles, bringing a curator’s concerns to game and design history and a historian’s and critic’s attention to bear on game collections and collectors. Game After arrives at critical moment in the study of games, one in which the status of games themselves, as well as the means and methods best …

Creating Domestic Dependents: Indian Removal, Cherokee Sovereignty And Women’S Rights, Jesslyn R. Collins-Frohlich

Theses and Dissertations--English

What, this project asks, are the impacts of the alliance between women and Native Americans in the nineteenth century debate over Indian Removal? How might groups similarly excluded from patriarchal systems of government by race and gender turn exclusion into arguments for inclusion? In what ways might this alliance change interpretations of the women’s right and Native American rights movements? While arguments made by women and Native Americans during Indian Removal receive considerable scholarly attention, most studies-especially those concerned with women’s involvement- subordinate Indian Removal to abolition or create significant omissions in the narratives of both movements by adopting a …

Strong Angels Of Comfort: Middle Class Managing Daughters In Victorian Literature, Emily A. Dotson Jan 2014

Strong Angels Of Comfort: Middle Class Managing Daughters In Victorian Literature, Emily A. Dotson

Theses and Dissertations--English

This dissertation joins a vibrant conversation in the social sciences about the challenging nature of care labor as well as feminist discussions about the role of the daughter in Victorian culture.

It explores the literary presence of the middle class managing daughter in the Victorian home.

Collectively, the novels in this study articulate social anxieties about the unclear and unstable role of daughters in the family, the physically and emotionally challenging work they, and all women, do, and the struggle for daughters to find a place in a family hierarchy, which is often structured not by effort or affection, but …

Examining Reasons For Low Fidelity To Educational Programs In Patients With Gestational Diabetes: A Qualitative Study, Lauren Brinkman Roberson Jan 2014

Examining Reasons For Low Fidelity To Educational Programs In Patients With Gestational Diabetes: A Qualitative Study, Lauren Brinkman Roberson

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an increasing problem in the U.S. Many comorbidities are associated with GDM: increased risk for type 2 diabetes, neonatal hypoglycemia and fetal malformation. Healthcare organizations develop GDM educational programs to provide women with knowledge and skills to manage GDM and reduce health risks. While there are significant benefits to attending GDM educational programs, attendance rates are low. Little research has been conducted to determine reasons for low attendance in GDM educational programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of women with GDM and to describe factors influencing GDM educational program attendance. …

The Influence Of Religiosity On The Attitudes Towards Homosexuality Among College Students, Anastasiia Kuptsevych Jan 2014

The Influence Of Religiosity On The Attitudes Towards Homosexuality Among College Students, Anastasiia Kuptsevych

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This is a descriptive study of the influence of religiosity on the attitudes towards homosexuality. The hypothesis for this study was that the degree to which one is religious influences the attitudes one has towards homosexuality. Data was analyzed by using regression analysis. Results show that students who attend church often and interpret Bible as true and correct tend to have negative attitudes towards a homosexual person, homosexual behavior between same sex partners as well as same sex unions. On the other hand, the degree to which students view God as active and angry in their life is not a …

“Some Weird Bunch Of Anti-Rebels”: Postmodernism And The Emergence Of Post-Postmodernism In The Twenty-First Century, Trey Sarratt Jan 2014

“Some Weird Bunch Of Anti-Rebels”: Postmodernism And The Emergence Of Post-Postmodernism In The Twenty-First Century, Trey Sarratt

Theses & ETDs

This thesis concerns the search for a literary movement or structure of feeling that historically comes after postmodernism in American fiction. The bulk of this investigation comprises the analyses of three literary texts: David Foster Wallace’s short story “Good Old Neon” (2004), Jonathan Franzen’s novel The Corrections (2001), and David Milch’s HBO television series Deadwood (2004-2006). I introduce these texts as important elements in identifying a transitional period between postmodern and post-postmodern dominance in twenty-first century American literature. In each chapter, I interpret the text’s relationship to literary postmodernism and the ways in which these texts posit a conceptual alternative …

Crossing Borders Toward Young Transnational Lives, G. Sue Kasun, Cinthya M. Saavedra Jan 2014

Crossing Borders Toward Young Transnational Lives, G. Sue Kasun, Cinthya M. Saavedra

Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications

Young immigrant youth often live their lives across borders, either by physically crossing them for return visits and/or by metaphorically crossing them through social media and cultural identification. The authors argue these students are better understood as transnational, shifting the focus for educators away from imagining their immigrant students on a straight, one-way path to assimilation in the U.S. to understanding these youths’ abilities to cross borders. Specifically, they call for a redesignation of English Language Learners (ELLs) as Transnational English Learners (TELs). Highlighting examples of educators’ successful border-crossing work, the authors call for educators to cross borders as well …
