The “Outsider/Insider” Assignment: A Pedagogical Innovation For Teaching Cross-Cultural Understanding, Angela Garcia Jan 2014

The “Outsider/Insider” Assignment: A Pedagogical Innovation For Teaching Cross-Cultural Understanding, Angela Garcia

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, I describe an innovative assignment for teaching undergraduate students cross-cultural understanding. The Outsider/Insider assignment simultaneously teaches facts about cultural difference and skills for managing cross-cultural encounters. Briefly, the assignment is to write two short papers, one in which the student describes a situation in which he or she was the outsider, and the other a situation in which he or she observed a newcomer to a group where that person was an insider. The paper begins by reviewing previous research on cross-cultural interaction and its relevance for pedagogy, and describing the course, its goals, and the “Outsider/Insider” …

From Food Desert To Food Mirage: Race, Social Class, And Food Shopping In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Daniel Monroe Sullivan Jan 2014

From Food Desert To Food Mirage: Race, Social Class, And Food Shopping In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Daniel Monroe Sullivan

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

New supermarkets in previous “food deserts” can benefit residents by improving their access to healthful, affordable food. But in gentrifying neighborhoods characterized by the inflow of middle-class, white residents and the outflow of working class, minorities, who benefits from a new supermarket that emphasizes organic food and environmental sustainability? This paper contributes to the food access literature by examining the food shopping behavior of diverse residents by using survey data and probability sampling in the Alberta neighborhood in Portland, Oregon (USA). Regression results show that college-educated (62%) and white residents (60%) are much more likely to shop there weekly, regardless …

Dando Um Jeito: An Integrated Theological, Historical, Cultural And Strategic Study Of Missio Dei To, In And Through Brazil, Joao Mordomo Jan 2014

Dando Um Jeito: An Integrated Theological, Historical, Cultural And Strategic Study Of Missio Dei To, In And Through Brazil, Joao Mordomo

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since it’s descobrimento on April 22nd, 1500, Brazil proved to be resistant to Protestant and Evangelical Christianity until the 20th century. However, by the end of the century, Brazil had, in many missiologists’ minds, transitioned from being a missionary field to a missionary force. There is one Brazilian trait in particular that serves well to describe both God as He has orchestrated the evangelization of Brazil, and Brazilians as they increasingly have fulfilled their role in God’s global mission to, in and through Brazil. This trait is summarized in the expression dar um jeito (pronounced “darh oon jhei’-to”). While a …

"I Feel Young, I Feel Alive, I Am Discovering A New World" : Life Transitions And Identity Construction Of Adult English-Language Learners, Renata Gutowska

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of adult English-language learners' life transitions and identity construction resulting from their experience in noncredit (ESL) programs offered at a community college. Two research questions guided this study: (1) How do adult English-language learners perceive the role of ESL programs in their identity construction? (2) How do adult English-language learners perceive the role of ESL programs in their life transitions? Twenty-four intermediate and advanced ESL students participated in this study, and the basic interpretive qualitative research method was used to understand their perspectives. Interviews were the means of data collection.||Three major …

Trademark Hybridity And Brand Protection, Timothy Greene Jan 2014

Trademark Hybridity And Brand Protection, Timothy Greene

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

What’s in a word? As it turns out, quite a lot. The vast majority of words in our language, including trademarked terms, signify a variety of conceptual meanings and senses. This idea of splintered definition— described in the psycholinguistics literature as “semantic ambiguity” and offered in two flavors: “homonymy” (divergent and unrelated meanings) and “polysemy” (divergent yet related senses)—is underrepresented in trademark law. As a result, there has been a proliferation of legal doctrines that fail to accurately describe our linguistic lives, most notably including dilution and genericness. This Article draws on psycholinguistics literature on semantic ambiguity resolution to highlight …

El Intelectual Español Y El Problema De La Nación: Del Franquismo A La Constitución De 1978, H. Rosi Song

Spanish Faculty Research and Scholarship

The debate about the Spanish nation has long been an important part of the political and cultural discussion during the Transition in Spain. In this context, the discussion surrounding the teaching of Catalan exposes a particular relationship that Spanish intellectuals have maintained with Spain and the nationalistic discourses that have surrounded it. With the end of the dictatorship, the patriotic rhetoric about the Spanish nation seems to have lessened, but the misgivings about its future have surfaced amid the political compromises between the Spanish State and its regional political and cultural interests.

El tema de la nación se debate y …

Historias De PolíTica FiccióN De Manuel VáZquez MontalbáN O La IndagacióN De Un Trauma EspañOl, H. Rosi Song

Back To The Future: Towards A Cultural Archive Of La Movida, William J. Nichols, H. Rosi Song Jan 2014

Back To The Future: Towards A Cultural Archive Of La Movida, William J. Nichols, H. Rosi Song

Spanish Faculty Research and Scholarship

Toward a Cultural Archive of la Movida revisits the cultural and social milieu in which la Movida, an explosion of artistic production in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was articulated discursively, aesthetically, socially, and politically. We connect this experience with a broader national and international context that takes it beyond the city of Madrid and outside the borders of Spain. This collection of essays links the political and social undertakings of this cultural period with youth movements in Spain and other international counter-cultural or underground movements. Moving away from biographical experiences or the identification of further participants and works …

Blood, Tears, And Sweat: An Intersectional Excavation Of The Literary Vampire In Neoliberal Discourse, Jessica Elizabeth Birch Jan 2014

Blood, Tears, And Sweat: An Intersectional Excavation Of The Literary Vampire In Neoliberal Discourse, Jessica Elizabeth Birch

Open Access Dissertations

This project engages in a critical examination of the figure of the sympathetic vampire in paranormal romance novels and its relationship to neoliberal individualism, using an analytic frame informed by Valerie Smith's conceptualization of black feminist thinking; it focuses on the portrayal of the neoliberal institutions of nationalism, race, heterosexuality, and motherhood within Jewelle Gomez's The Gilda Stories, L.A. Banks's Minion, and Charlaine Harris's Dead Until Dark. As the ideology of neoliberal individualism has shaped the dominant discourse of the United States, neoliberal individualism has also remade the discourse of monstrosity with regard to vampires. The shifting representation of the …

What Is In A Percentage?: Calculation As The Poetic Translation Of Human Rights, Andrea Ballestero Jan 2014

What Is In A Percentage?: Calculation As The Poetic Translation Of Human Rights, Andrea Ballestero

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Increasingly, the efficacy of human rights, international norms, and commercial standards is deposited in numbers as measures of social and financial value. Taking the form of indicators, goals, and targets, these numbers are active participants in the everyday practices through which the law is constituted around the world. This paper examines the normative ability of percentages as numeric devices that transform measures of value across legal domains. The paper draws on two examples: a) the generation of indicators by NGOs promoting the Human Right to Water, and b) the technical work of regulators attempting to regulate water prices to follow …

Critical Cultural Translation: A Socio-Legal Framework For Regulatory Orders, Laura A. Foster Jan 2014

Critical Cultural Translation: A Socio-Legal Framework For Regulatory Orders, Laura A. Foster

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The making of legal regulatory orders has become increasingly transnational as legal ideas travel and are adopted, discarded, and refigured. Socio-legal scholars have recently turned to the framework of translation to guide examinations of how law changes from one context to the next and how law itself translates and transforms the subjects and objects it governs. Drawing upon science studies and feminist theory, this article develops critical cultural translation as possible socio-legal methodology and praxis for the study of transnational regulatory orders. Furthering this line of inquiry, it addresses the regulation of benefit sharing and the patenting of indigenous San …

Plastic Injuries, Anne Bloom Jan 2014

Plastic Injuries, Anne Bloom

Hofstra Law Review

Perceptions of injuries are culturally mediated, mutable, plastic. In tort litigation, however, the cultural plasticity with which we perceive and experience injuries is often ignored. This Article explores the cultural plasticity with which we perceive injuries through the lens of plastic surgery litigation. It argues that determinations of injury in plastic surgery litigation turn on the culturally biased — and highly mutable — perceptions of medical professionals. More broadly, the Article argues that culture shapes perceptions of injuries in tort litigation as a whole. To make these points, the Article examines a prototypical plastic surgery case and surveys a range …

Male College Veterans, Masculinity And Their Help Seeking Behaviors : A Thesis Based Upon A Sample Of Military-Veterans And Active Duty Personnel, Liam Lattrell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study investigates the relevancy college experience has on masculinity amongst male US military personnel (active duty and veterans) and how this 'manliness' affects help seeking behaviors. Sample. 152 active duty male US military members and male veterans. Methods. Using quantitative survey instruments that measured masculinity and help seeking behaviors, I surveyed active duty military and veterans. I ran statistical tests to determine correlative factors related to masculinity and help seeking scores between participants with college experience and those without this experience. Additionally, I drafted open response questions and ran an analysis on this data comparing it to participants' quantitative …

An efficient in vitro regeneration system was developed for the ornamental Muscari armeniacum on Linsmaier and Skoog basal medium (LS) supplemented with benzyladenine (BA) at varying concentrations (0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mg/L) alone or in combination with 0.5 mg/L alpha-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). The highest mean number of direct somatic embryo formations was observed on LS medium containing 2.0 mg/L BA and 0.5 mg/L NAA, with a mean of 7.9 somatic embryos per explant after 10 weeks of culture. Green nodular calli induced on LS medium containing 5.0 mg/L BA alone or in combination with 0.5 mg/L NAA were transferred …

A Biocultural Perspective On The Transition To Agriculture In Ukraine, Jordan Kenneth Karsten Jan 2014

A Biocultural Perspective On The Transition To Agriculture In Ukraine, Jordan Kenneth Karsten

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The development of agriculture and its spread around the globe is one of the most consequential events in the history of our species. The transition to agriculture is associated with many cultural developments, such as craft specialization, urbanization, and the creation of social hierarchies. Many social theorists believe that these changes associated with the adoption of farming were beneficial to the human condition, however, not all agree. The goal of this research is to evaluate the impact of the adoption of agriculture on human health. To do this, bioarchaeological analysis is employed, comparing the skeletal and dental health of Mesolithic …

Museum Representation : Ethnostatic Representations Of Culture, Brynna Elizabeth Tussey Jan 2014

Museum Representation : Ethnostatic Representations Of Culture, Brynna Elizabeth Tussey

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Museums act as knowledge production centers for cultural objects. The knowledge produced and distributed frequently portrays the Other as being immobilized in ethnostatic history. Models and modes of representation serve to reinforce these perceptions, rather than aid in the development of new forms of knowledge production. Through the discussion of these models, my research presents new theoretical perspectives for the agencies within the museum, and proposes possible new models for displaying objects from other cultures and the dialogues around said objects.

Academic Librarians And The Sustainability Curriculum: Building Alliances To Support A Paradigm Shift, Madeleine K. Charney Jan 2014

Academic Librarians And The Sustainability Curriculum: Building Alliances To Support A Paradigm Shift, Madeleine K. Charney

Collaborative Librarianship

Sustainability is a fast evolving movement in higher education demonstrated by a proliferation of academic programs, co-curricular initiatives, and campus projects. Sustainability is now viewed as vital to the mission of many institutions of higher education, creating a paradigm shift that librarians can help advance with their collective interdisciplinary expertise. A review of LibGuides (online resource guides) showed that academic librarians are involved with sustainability efforts on many campuses and have a role in shaping curriculum-related activities. The author administered a survey to creators of sustainability LibGuides during the spring of 2011, posting the survey on library listservs as well. …

Popularising History: Re-Igniting Pre-Service Teacher And Student Interest In History Via Historical Fiction, Jennifer Howell Jan 2014

Popularising History: Re-Igniting Pre-Service Teacher And Student Interest In History Via Historical Fiction, Jennifer Howell

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper seeks to investigate the recent trends in the popularising of history and its impact on teaching and learning. History, as a subject area, has been the object of renewed focus from the media. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the amount of fiction, films, television shows, documentaries and children’s programs situated in or concerned with historical events, eras or historical figures. The use of historical fiction in the history classroom has been well debated and has polarised practitioners of the subject. Regardless of the profession being divided on its use, the number of historical …

Tensions In Talking Diversity, Linda M. Gallant, Kathleen J. Krone Jan 2014

Tensions In Talking Diversity, Linda M. Gallant, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Diversity policies and programs continue to be a prominent yet problematic feature of organizational life. This study explored tensions arising as 30 employees talk about their experience with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action (AA), and diversity in a midwestern human service organization. Tensions related to fairness and fear emerged as interpretive themes prompting majority group members to avoid interacting about racial differences and minority group members to do the work of making difference meaningful. We argue that formal policies and diversity programs be reimagined so as to ease interaction constraints between groups.

Spirituality As A Predictor Of Reduced Suicide Risk In A Religiously And Ethnically Diverse Youth Sample, Jennifer Kyle

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Cross-cultural suicide research on spiritual faith as a protective factor in youth is limited. The aim of this study is to examine spiritual faith as a predictor of passive suicidal ideation in a racially and religiously diverse sample of college-aged youth. Participants (N = 243) completed self-report instruments to assess suicidality, social support, reasons for living as well as existential and religious well-being. Over 50% of the sample reported identifying with a racial group including Asian, Hispanic and Black. Approximately 81% of participants reported they had spiritual beliefs (N = 196) representing a variety of religions, including Catholicism, Judaism and …

Uneven Ground: Figurations Of The Rural Modern In The U.S. South, 1890-1945, Benjamin S. Child

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

New modernist studies has opened wide the discussion about what modernism means, when it begins, and, compellingly for the purposes of this project, where it occurs. Exploring intersections between modernization, modernism, labor, and segregation in the agricultural South, this dissertation demonstrates how the effects of nascent industrialization, emergent technologies, and "modern" thought are animated by figures and spaces associated with--or performing--versions of rurality. The project is divided into three major sections. In the first, I suggest that the contradictions of African American life in the post-Reconstruction world are parsed in the period's literature through the presence of a veiled georgic …

Gender As Compromise Formation : Towards A Radical Psychoanalytic Theory Of Trans*, Laura K. Werner-Larsen Jan 2014

Gender As Compromise Formation : Towards A Radical Psychoanalytic Theory Of Trans*, Laura K. Werner-Larsen

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explores the utility of psychoanalytic theory as a tool for working with trans* identified clients. Acknowledging the deeply problematic history of psychoanalytic theory and practice with trans*clients, the study nevertheless contends that a radical rereading of the psychoanalytic canon can provide a theory of gender as compromise formation and a conceptual toolkit that can allow for anti-oppressive clinical work around gender identity from a psychodynamic perspective. Using conceptual history and conceptual analysis as a methodological frame, the study delineates five concepts in contemporary psychoanalytic theorizing that support the depathologizing of trans* identity and the denormalization of cisgender …

Culture And Nongovernmental Organizations Performance, Ondo State, Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Akinkuotu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Non-government organizations (NGOs) became strong forces in global affairs at the local, national, and international level, with the emergence of the United Nations Organization (UNO) in 1945. Many of these NGOs have failed to attain their goals, and research efforts have attributed their failure to socioeconomic and political factors. The situation is worse in developing countries, where there has been an alarming proliferation of NGOs since the 1980s. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the performance of community-based NGOs in Nigeria in relation to the cultural values of the people. The theoretical frameworks for the study were …
