Clcweb: Comparative Literature And Culture, Gregory E. Rutledge
Clcweb: Comparative Literature And Culture, Gregory E. Rutledge
Department of English: Faculty Publications
In his article "Race, Slavery, and the Revaluation of the T'ang Canon" Gregory E. Rutledge re-evaluates—from the purview of African Diaspora literary studies—historiography that considers the place of East African slave lore in T'ang Dynasty fiction. Julie Wilensky's "The Magical Kunlun and 'Devil Slaves': Chinese Perceptions of Dark-skinned People and Africa before 1500" (2002), a revision of Chang Hsing-lang's "The Importation of Negro Slaves to China Under the T'ang Dynasty (A.D. 618- 907)" (1930), is pivotal since it occupies the nexus between European-American, East-Asian, and African-Diasporic canons and policies. Rutledge situates Wilensky's and Chang's works in the context of Edward …

Readers Of Joshua Loth Liebman's Peace Of Mind, Cheryl Oestreicher
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1946, Simon & Schuster published Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebman's bestselling book Peace of Mind, a self-help manual that explained how psychiatry and religion together could help individuals achieve emotional and spiritual maturity, and ultimately happiness. At the time of its publication, Liebman was a rabbi at Boston's Temple Israel and was well known from his sermons on the NBC radio program Message to Israel, broadcast in Boston and New York City. Significantly, Liebman was, in the words of Matthew S. Hedstrom, the first "non-Christian author to reach a mass audience in the United States" and Donald Meyer …

“Deep Interdisciplinarity” As Critical Pedagogy: Teaching At The Intersections Of Urban Communication And Public Place And Space, Erin Daina Mcclellan, Amanda G. Johnson
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
Interdisciplinary is a word that has been picked up by institutions of higher education, research foundations, and even popular culture as a way to articulate the need to move beyond the traditional disciplinary boundaries within which we categorize knowledge about the world. While disciplinary silos in higher education often reflect structures within which teaching and learning are engaged, we contend that critical pedagogy provides an opportunity for innovative thinking and creativity to emerge via Giroux’s (1981) critical notion of praxis. We discuss how Penny’s (2009) notion of deep interdisciplinarity can serve to guide course development in a way that enables …

Celebrity Politicians And Publicity Rights In The Age Of Obama, Michael G. Bennett
Celebrity Politicians And Publicity Rights In The Age Of Obama, Michael G. Bennett
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
The right of publicity is a relatively marginalized yet increasingly radical form of intellectual property. Typically, celebrities use it to prevent freeloaders from profiting on their fame by making unauthorized use of their image, likeness or signature to make goods or services more attractive to consumers. The right of publicity allows famous individuals to stop this type of behavior by providing a property right in identity or persona. Brandished by celebrities who are also political figures, though, the doctrine can become a powerful means of chilling political speech, and therefore a direct threat to First Amendment free speech rights. The …

A Cultural-Discourse Perspective Through The Strategies Of Subtitling Of American Films From English Into Persian A Case Study Of Subtitling Friends Series, Amin Amirdabbaghian, Yousef Pour Ibrahimi
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The research is based on the analysis of the American television series named Friends with the focus on the CSIs (Culture Specific Items) and how these differences have been handled by Persian translators who produced the subtitles. The analysis was based on the assumption that Iranian's culture is different from the US culture so people in these two countries may have problems in understanding CSIs if they are translated literally and if the subtitle translation is not adapted to the target audience. The research looked at the way subtitle translators involved with subtitling the American television series Friends had dealt …

Raché Manyok Bay Té-A Blanche: Deforestation In Haiti And The Power Of An Image, Gerline Christophe
Raché Manyok Bay Té-A Blanche: Deforestation In Haiti And The Power Of An Image, Gerline Christophe
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Media representations perpetuate stereotyped images of Haiti and Haitians. Such expressions typically emphasize extreme poverty, mismanagement, exploitation, hopelessness, and also environmental degradation. The environmental image of Haiti is that it is massively deforested, and the connection of deforestation to poverty and other problems has been captured in an iconic aerial photograph of the Haitian and Dominican Republic (DR) border. First appearing in National Geographic in 1987 and replicated since in various sources, the image displays a stark contrast between the tropical lushness of the DR and a desert-like Haiti, stripped of its vegetation. The stark image in effect dichotomizes a …

The gifts that the Holy Spirit grants to church members are directly linked to the fulfillment of the order given by Christ to “go, make disciples, baptize and teach” as described in the great gospel commission of Matthew 28,18-20. In a similar manner, Jesus´s order to “go through all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” described in Mark 16,15-18, links the task of preaching the gospel with speaking in tongues (glossolalia) as a sign that would accompany the believer-disciple-missionary as he/she obeyed such an order.
Due to the few biblical references pointing to the gift of speaking …
The Diversity Of Color: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Color Symbolism, Erica L. Bradfield
The Diversity Of Color: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Color Symbolism, Erica L. Bradfield
Honors Theses
Does a person's perception of color symbolism depend on their cultural geographic origin? As color is often connected to different cultural elements, this study is intended as a contribution to advancing cross-cultural understanding in a globalizing world. The hypothesis states that the color perceived to be symbolic of various life events such as weddings, births, and deaths as well as emotions such s happiness or sadness, will vary based on a person's cultural geographic origin. Using eleven basic color terms as determined by Berlin and Kay (196), subjects' perceptions of color symbolism was explored through responses to an online survey …

'Some Of Us Just Like To Read' : Lady Gaga's Pastiche And The Rhizome, Anthony Amettis
Honors Capstones
“’Some of Us Just Like to Read’: Lady Gaga’s Pastiche and the Rhizome” explores intersections of network theory, new media, contemporary art and visual culture, and post-modern critical discourses. It attempts to characterize the productive tendencies of contemporary pop culture, using Lady Gaga as a lens through which these tendencies can be observed. It pays particular attention to the correlation(s) between the structure of the Internet, the exchange of texts and images within such a structure, and how Lady Gaga embodies this dynamic. This paper demonstrates, through both a critique of the concept of pastiche under current cultural conditions and …
A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein
A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diversity of Chachapoya mortuary practices is not well understood archaeologically, even though the region has received some attention for the monumental constructions and visually striking mortuary complexes located high on open cliff faces. This may be due to the difficult accessibility and often poor state of preservation consistent with many Chachapoya mortuary and occupation sites. This thesis reconstructs mortuary practices at La Petaca in the Chachapoyas region of Peru, applying paleodemographic and GIS methodological approaches to facilitate and improve the bioarchaeological study of commingled skeletal remains in an open, disturbed communal funerary context. Research focused on SUP CF-01, a natural …

A Practice-Oriented Definition Of Post-Process Second Language Writing Theory, Amir Kalan
English Faculty Publications
ENGLISH:
This article is a synthesis of the scholarly literature on the post-process approach to teaching second language (L2) writing, particularly college and university composition in English as an additional language. This synthesis aims to offer a definition of post-process L2 writing that can readily lend itself to practice and be more accessible to practitioners. All the publications that had either substantially or marginally discussed post-process theory since 1990 were systematically reviewed in order to answer the following question: What is a definition of post-process L2 writing theory that can readily lend itself to pedagogy and actual practice for helping …

Communication
This review seeks to introduce political communication by showing the kinds of studies currently published. Of necessity not complete, it does not list every study nor does it include every possible approach to political communication, but only those published in the sample of journals—one hopes enough to indicate the scope of this wide area of communication study

A Study Of Polysemy On Chinese Body-Part Terms Tou ‘Head’ And Yan ‘Eye’ : A Cognitive Approach / Lv Yetong, Yetong Lv
Student Works (2010-2019)
Polysemy, or the association of two or more related meanings with a single linguistic form (Taylor, 1995, p.99), is ubiquitous in language and receives attention from many linguistic disciplines. Cognitive linguists interpret the meanings of polysemous words based on conventional conceptual structures, as the identification of polysemy involves the conceptualization of everyday life. Based on the principles of cognitive linguistics, this study analyzes polysemy through an in-depth examination of Chinese body-part terms, namely tou „head‟ and yan „eye‟, in order to unfold the internal relationships among the meanings of polysemous words. According to the findings, first, the original or literal …

The Opening And Closing Sequences Of Malaysian Vlogs / Goh Vern Jan, Vern Jan Goh
Student Works (2010-2019)
This paper looks at the opening and closing strategies of Malaysian vlogs. Aside from these strategies, the non-verbal communication of the vloggers are analysed as well. This paper also investigates the vlog viewers’ perception regarding the importance of openings and closings in vlogs. Frobenius’s (2011) taxonomy of opening strategies and Coronel-Molina’s (1998) closing strategies are used as the framework for analyzing the data. Qualitative research is used to examine the data, which consists of 30 monologue vlogs from YouTube. The openings and closings of the vloggers are analysed using Conversation Analysis (CA). This approach facilitates the transcription of their monologues …
