The 'Oldest Tricks In The Book' Do Not Work! Reports Of Burglary By Duma Detainees In Western Australia, Natalie J. Gately, Jennifer Fleming, Nathalie Mcginty, Anthony M. Scott

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Foreword : Research investigating the methods and motivations of burglars has typically focused on incarcerated offenders. The Australian Institute of Criminology’s Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) program provided an opportunity for the authors to explore the methods and motivations of those actively involved in committing burglaries, whether or not they had actually been caught or detained for that offence. The findings support Routine Activity Theory, indicating that offenders consider a number of factors in determining whether a property will be targeted for a break and enter offence. As might be expected, opportunistic burglars choose easy to access properties, stay …

This total group of people who suffer either a disability or a long-term health condition numbers 8.9 million people, or over thirty-nine percent of the Australian population. Of the people reporting a disability, 3.7 million or eighty-eight percent of that group experienced limitations in the activities …

Comparison Of The Physical, Physiological And Perceptual Demands Of Small-Sided Games And Match Play In Professional Football Players, Stephen Hissey Jan 2014

Comparison Of The Physical, Physiological And Perceptual Demands Of Small-Sided Games And Match Play In Professional Football Players, Stephen Hissey

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The physical and technical requirements of a range of small-sided football (soccer) games (SSGs) have previously been examined in order to compare their requirements to competitive match play. SSGs are used to combine the technical, tactical and physical components of normal match play in training in order to make the training sessions specific to football. However, most previous research has focused on youth players and it is known that the playing patterns, and thus session outcomes, are different for elite players. Consequently, research examining elite players is required in order to improve our understanding of the use of SSGs in …

Mathematics: Creating Value For Engineering Students, Eileen Goold Jan 2014

Mathematics: Creating Value For Engineering Students, Eileen Goold

Conference Papers

While students’ attainment in mathematics and their attitudes about mathematics are strongly inter-related, value is an important concept in mathematics education. It is arguable that lecturers, especially in engineering faculties, know little about the relationships students form with mathematics; for example what value do engineering students place on mathematics learning? Mathematics is often perceived as a difficult subject and it is associated with certainty and with being able to get the right answer. However the narrowness of the assessment process overshadows predictors of achievement behaviour: expectancy (am I able to do the task?) and value (why should I do the …

Investigating Engineering Practice Is Valuable For Mathematics Learning, Eileen Goold Jan 2014

Investigating Engineering Practice Is Valuable For Mathematics Learning, Eileen Goold

Conference Papers

While engineering mathematics curricula often prescribe a fixed body of mathematical knowledge, this study takes a different approach; second-year engineering students are additionally required to investigate and document an aspect of mathematics used in engineering practice. A qualitative approach is used to evaluate the impact that students’ investigations have on their mathematics learning and whether this approach creates greater value for students compared to curriculum mathematics learning. This article contains an account of students’ engagement with and their emotional responses to their investigations of professional engineers’mathematics usage. The study illustrates the positive changes in students’ mathematics attitudes arising from their insights …

Navigating The Universe Of Etds: Streamlining For An Efficient And Sustainable Workflow At The University Of North Florida Library, Courtenay Mcleland, Marielle Veve

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Since its inception in 2011, the Digital Projects and Preservation Department at the University of North Florida (UNF) Library has been digitizing print theses and dissertations while also offering a mediated option for online submissions through its institutional repository (IR). It was not until Fall 2012 that the submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) became a requirement for the university graduates. As time passed and the number of ETDs deposited grew, so did the need to streamline processes to avoid duplication of efforts, improve efficiencies, and save time. After much experimentation and effort, the presenters were able to successfully …

Visual Merchandising Strategies For Small Businesses, Karen Henry Jan 2014

Visual Merchandising Strategies For Small Businesses, Karen Henry

Apparel Design and Hospitality Management

The sole purpose of this research was to focus specifically on visual merchandising strategies for small apparel stores since little research had been done on these types of stores. Visual merchandising literature to-date left small apparel retailers with little guidelines in deciding which visual merchandising strategies are more appropriate for their operations. This study addressed how participants responded favorably to six visual merchandising strategies (store layout/design, color, lighting, music, fixtures, and window displays) and how applying these strategies may benefit small apparel stores. The results suggest that these six visual merchandising strategies were instrumental with increased purchase intentions, traffic, loyalty, …

Rotational Covariance And Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger Theorems For Three Or More Particles Of Any Dimension, Jay Lawrence Jan 2014

Rotational Covariance And Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger Theorems For Three Or More Particles Of Any Dimension, Jay Lawrence

Dartmouth Scholarship

Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are characterized by their transformation properties under a continuous symmetry group, and N-body operators that transform covariantly exhibit a wealth of GHZ contradictions. We show that local or noncontextual hidden variables cannot duplicate the predicted measurement outcomes for covariant transformations, and we extract specific GHZ contradictions from discrete subgroups, with no restrictions on particle number N or dimension d except for the general requirement that N≥3 for GHZ states. However, the specific contradictions fall into three regimes distinguished by increasing demands on the number of measurement operators required for the proofs. The first regime consists of proofs …

The Federal Arbitration Act As Procedural Reform, Hiro Aragaki Jan 2014

The Federal Arbitration Act As Procedural Reform, Hiro Aragaki

Faculty Scholarship

Recent Supreme Court decisions such as American Express v. Italian Colors Restaurant, 133 S. Ct. 2304 (2013), and AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion, 131 S. Ct. 1740 (2011), represent dramatic developments with implications that extend far beyond the arbitration context. These decisions are a product of what the author refers to as the “contract model” of the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA). Heretofore largely unquestioned, the contract model posits the FAA’s original and dominant purpose as the promotion of private ordering in dispute resolution, as free as pos- sible from state regulation. The model has, in turn, helped courts and commenta- tors …

The Relevance And Adequacy Of The Ashanti Regional Library, Kumasi, Ghana: An Appraisal By Users, Kwaku Agyen-Gyasi, Hagar Atta-Oteng

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Public libraries provide resources and services in a variety of media to meet the needs of users for education, information and personal development. The provision of quality information will always have a positive impact on the patronage of these libraries. This is because the users’ ability to access relevant information and make effective use of them to a large extent determines their willingness to visit the library in question. This paper assesses the relevance and adequacy of public library resources at the Ashanti Regional Library in Kumasi. Data for the study were obtained through the use of structured questionnaire. A …
