General Monotonicity, Interpolation Of Operators, And Applications, Stepan M. Grigoriev
General Monotonicity, Interpolation Of Operators, And Applications, Stepan M. Grigoriev
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Assume that {φn} is an orthonormal uniformly bounded (ONB) sequence of complex-valued functions de ned on a measure space (Ω,Σ,µ), and f ∈ L1(Ω,Σ,µ). Let be the Fourier coefficients of f with respect to {φn} . R.E.A.C. Paley proved a theorem connecting the Lp-norm of f with a related norm of the sequence {cn}. Hardy and Littlewood subsequently proved that Paley’s result is best possible within its context. Their results were generalized by Dikarev, Macaev, Askey, Wainger, Sagher, and later by Tikhonov, Li yand, Booton and others. The present work continues the generalization of these results.
General Relativistic Quasi-Local Angular Momentum Continuity And The Stability Of Strongly Elliptic Eigenvalue Problems, Shawn M. Wilder
General Relativistic Quasi-Local Angular Momentum Continuity And The Stability Of Strongly Elliptic Eigenvalue Problems, Shawn M. Wilder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In general relativity, angular momentum of the gravitational field in some volume bounded by an axially symmetric sphere is well-defined as a boundary integral. The definition relies on the symmetry generating vector field, a Killing field, of the boundary. When no such symmetry exists, one defines angular momentum using an approximate Killing field. Contained in the literature are various approximations that capture certain properties of metric preserving vector fields. We explore the continuity of an angular momentum definition that employs an approximate Killing field that is an eigenvector of a particular second-order differential operator. We find that the eigenvector varies …
Hydrodynamic Analysis Of Underwater Bodies For Efficient Station Keeping In Shallow Waters With Surface Waves, Matthew Bradley
Hydrodynamic Analysis Of Underwater Bodies For Efficient Station Keeping In Shallow Waters With Surface Waves, Matthew Bradley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
To determine the effect of body shape on the response of underwater vehicles to surface waves in shallow water, the wave radiation hydrodynamic forces are evaluated for a family of (i) prolate spheroidal hull forms and (ii) cylindrical bodies with hemispherical nose and conical tail sections by systematically varying the geometric parameters but keeping displacement constant. The added-mass and wave damping coefficients are determined using a frequency-domain, simple-source based boundary integral method. Results are obtained for a range of wave frequencies and depths of vehicle submergence all for a fixed water depth of 10 m. With the wave exciting force …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an educational intervention using Swanson’s (1991) caring theory on (a) nurses’ knowledge and caring behavior to late preterm infants (LPIs) and their families, and (b) the incidence of LPIs’ hospital visits and readmission rates for hyperbilirubinemia and dehydration in the first 30 days of life. The study began with the initial testing of the two instruments used and there were no inconsistencies identified in the content being measured. A convenient sample of nursery and postpartum nurses was recruited from two hospitals within a healthcare system. The nurses completed the …
Infrastructure To Model Complex Systems: Hydrological Modeling, Frank Wissinger
Infrastructure To Model Complex Systems: Hydrological Modeling, Frank Wissinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This research proposes an Infrastructure to model complex systems for hydrological modeling. Currently, the three main hydrological packages are: i) SEAWAT (modeling groundwater flow); ii) HECRAS (modeling surface water flow); iii) HEC-HMS (modeling atmospheric water flow). Each of these models is self-contained and has a different timescale and simulation speed. Consequently, any integrated model will only run as fast as the slowest of the models. This makes it difficult to provide reliable and dynamic information on water levels and water availability for a given geographical region in a timely manner. The goal of this research is to facilitate the integration …
Interactive Austen: An Analysis Of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries And The Postmodern Audience, Janette Duval
Interactive Austen: An Analysis Of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries And The Postmodern Audience, Janette Duval
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The aim of this study is to reveal how LBD adheres to postmodern tenets while also being ultimately suspicious of these principles. This suspicion of postmodern principles is reflected in the interaction between the main subject of the videos, Lizzie Bennet, and the audience. This examination invokes the questions of when, where, and how the audience experiences LBD. This illuminates the manner in which LBD functions as a postmodern literary text and how this text is critical of its digital composition.
Kangaroo Care With Full-Term Infants: Maternal Behaviors And Mother-Infant Bonding, Melannie Pineda
Kangaroo Care With Full-Term Infants: Maternal Behaviors And Mother-Infant Bonding, Melannie Pineda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Kangaroo care (KC), has been shown to promote healthy development for both pre-term and full-term infants, and to improve mother-infant bonding (Ludington-Hoe, 2011; Charpak et al., 2005). Current research on the maternal benefits of kangaroo care is scarce, primarily focuses on early KC, and is mostly qualitative in nature (Fegran, Helseth, & Fagermoan, 2008; Matos et al., 2010). The present study examined the effect of late KC on maternal behaviors, sensitivity, and mother-infant interactive mutuality when infants were 3 months of age. Mothers who used kangaroo care as directed were found to have greater bonding scores and less anxiety about …

Our case describes a 56-year-old African-American female who underwent fluoroscopy-guided epidural steroid injection for recurrent neck and arm pain. The administration of steroid injections has been shown to diminish peripheral glucose metabolism and to stimulate gluconeogenesis, thus elevating blood glucose concentration and worsening insulin resistance. Though uncommon, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can arise following both epidural steroid treatments in diagnosed diabetics or in cases of coinciding infection. At the time of the epidural injection, the patient showed no signs of acute infection, concomitant drug use or any documented diabetes, all potential causes of DKA. Our case is unique because it describes …

Rhabdomyolysis describes a clinical syndrome in which striated muscle breaks down and intracellular contents are released into the circulation. Exertional rhabdomyolysis can be caused by a new, intense workout routine or a change in intensity of an existing one. The severity of presentation varies from asymptomatic creatine kinase (CK) elevations to life-threatening renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, cardiac dysrhythmias and/or compartment syndrome. Our case describes a patient with exertional non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis caused by a mild workout routine change with markedly elevated CK level. There was no evidence of any concomitant renal failure or other aberrancies, such as compartment syndrome, electrolyte …
Relationships Of Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 With Inflammation And Insulin Resistance In Response To Acute Exercise In Obese Individuals, Aaron L. Slusher
Relationships Of Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 With Inflammation And Insulin Resistance In Response To Acute Exercise In Obese Individuals, Aaron L. Slusher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Obesity is associated with elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), contributing to systemic insulin resistance. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a vital metabolic and inflammatory regulator, however circulating FGF21 concentrations are elevated in obese individuals. Acute aerobic exercise increases systemic FGF21 in normal-weight individuals, however the effect of acute aerobic exercise on plasma FGF21 response and the relationships with inflammation (IL-6 and TNF-α), insulin resistance, and energy expenditure in obese individuals is unknown. Following 30 minutes of treadmill running at 75% VO2max, plasma FGF21 response, as indicated by area-under-the-curve “with respect to …
Remote Sensing Of Evapotranspiration Using Automated Calibration: Development And Testing In The State Of Florida, Aaron H. Evans
Remote Sensing Of Evapotranspiration Using Automated Calibration: Development And Testing In The State Of Florida, Aaron H. Evans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Thermal remote sensing is a powerful tool for measuring the spatial variability of evapotranspiration due to the cooling effect of vaporization. The residual method is a popular technique which calculates evapotranspiration by subtracting sensible heat from available energy. Estimating sensible heat requires aerodynamic surface temperature which is difficult to retrieve accurately. Methods such as SEBAL/METRIC correct for this problem by calibrating the relationship between sensible heat and retrieved surface temperature. Disadvantage of these calibrations are 1) user must manually identify extremely dry and wet pixels in image 2) each calibration is only applicable over limited spatial extent. Producing larger maps …
Relationships Among Crime Analysis, Accountability, And Innovative Policing Strategies: Results From A National Survey, Justin James Smith
Relationships Among Crime Analysis, Accountability, And Innovative Policing Strategies: Results From A National Survey, Justin James Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Over the years, innovations such as community-oriented policing, problem-oriented policing, and hot spots policing have enabled the police to make substantial crime control and reduction gains. However, empirical research has shown that police occasionally misuse these strategies in practice. One possible solution is the co-implementation of these strategies with crime analysis. Yet, little is known about this relationship in practice. Using national survey data collected by the Police Executive Research Forum in 2008 from a sample of over 1,000 United States police agencies this thesis explores this relationship. Results of bivariate analysis between agency commitment to and integration of crime …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Predictive Data Analytic Models To Attributes, James Chiou
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Classification algorithms represent a rich set of tools, which train a classification model from a given training and test set, to classify previously unseen test instances. Although existing methods have studied classification algorithm performance with respect to feature selection, noise condition, and sample distributions, our existing studies have not addressed an important issue on the classification algorithm performance relating to feature deletion and addition. In this thesis, we carry out sensitive study of classification algorithms by using feature deletion and addition. Three types of classifiers: (1) weak classifiers; (2) generic and strong classifiers; and (3) ensemble classifiers are validated on …
New Method Of Collecting Output Factors For Commissioming Linear Accelerators With Special Emphasis On Small Fields And Intensity Modualted Readiation Therapy, Cindy Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Common methods for commissioning linear accelerators often neglect beam data for small fields. Examining the methods of beam data collection and modeling for commissioning linear accelerators revealed little to no discussion of the protocols for fields smaller than 4 cm x 4 cm. This leads to decreased confidence levels in the dose calculations and associated monitor units (MUs) for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). The parameters of commissioning the Novalis linear accelerator (linac) on the Eclipse Treatment Planning System (TPS) led to the study of challenges collecting data for very small fields. The focus of this thesis is the examination …

A Theory For The Visual Perception Of Object Motion, Joseph W. Norman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The perception of visual motion is an integral aspect of many organisms' engagement with the world. In this dissertation, a theory for the perception of visual object-motion is developed. Object-motion perception is distinguished from objectless-motion perception both experimentally and theoretically. A continuoustime dynamical neural model is developed in order to generalize the ndings and provide a theoretical framework for continued re nement of a theory for object-motion perception. Theoretical implications as well as testable predictions of the model are discussed.

The Influence Of Professional Identity And Outcome Knowledge On Professional Judgment, Anna J. Johnson
The Influence Of Professional Identity And Outcome Knowledge On Professional Judgment, Anna J. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In response to the release of one of its Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB or Board) inspection reports, Deloitte notes that “[p]rofessional judgments of reasonable and highly competent people may differ as to the nature and extent of necessary auditing procedures, conclusions reached and required documentation” (PCAOB, 2008, 30). Other responses to PCAOB findings echo this sentiment. Stakeholders need to understand causes of differences between experts’ professional judgments to effectively utilize PCAOB inspection findings and firms’ responses to those findings. This study uses Social Identity Theory to explore whether role identity as an audit partner, internal reviewer, or PCAOB …
Transmitter-Receiver System For Time Average Fourier Telescopy, Diego F. Pava
Transmitter-Receiver System For Time Average Fourier Telescopy, Diego F. Pava
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Time Average Fourier Telescopy (TAFT) has been proposed as a means for obtaining high-resolution, diffraction-limited images over large distances through ground-level horizontal-path atmospheric turbulence. Image data is collected in the spatial-frequency, or Fourier, domain by means of Fourier Telescopy; an inverse two dimensional Fourier transform yields the actual image. TAFT requires active illumination of the distant object by moving interference fringe patterns. Light reflected from the object is collected by a “light-bucket” detector, and the resulting electrical signal is digitized and subjected to a series of signal processing operations, including an all-critical averaging of the amplitude and phase of a …

Transportation Operation And Safety Comparison Between Unsignalized/Signalized Offset T-Intersections, Two-Lane Roundabout, And Modified Roundabout, Brandon Fleming
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Traditional intersections have always caused congestion, delay, and accidents. There are numerous geometric intersection designs that best fit each situation. This study performed an operational and safety comparison with unsignalized/signalized offset, Tintersections, a two-lane roundabout, and a modified roundabout to decrease the overall travel delay and increase the safety using a case study. Using data from a government source, all designs were tested in a calibrated micro simulation model and traffic signals were optimized using a signal optimization platform. Each design was tested with various balancing schemes, left turn percentages, and hourly volumes to determine the failure point. The unsignalized/signalized …

Transition Experiences Of The Chronically Ill Adolescent, Kelly N. White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The continued development of the American health care system and evolving technology have led to an increased life expectancy within the general population. In fact, these advancements have also resulted in growing numbers of young people with chronic illnesses living into adulthood. Approximately one third of children ages 10-17 have a chronic disease, and the vast majority of these children will survive beyond their 20th birthday (Blum, 1995; Lotstein, McPherson, Strickland, & Newacheck, 2005; White, 2002). The main objective of this study was to explore the healthcare transition (HCT) practices of health care providers and the HCT experiences of chronically …
