Mimicking Metabolism Of A Reversed Chloroquine Antimalarial, Kelsie Lynn Kendrick Nov 2014

Mimicking Metabolism Of A Reversed Chloroquine Antimalarial, Kelsie Lynn Kendrick

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of this study was to elucidate the oxidation products of a candidate antimalarial drug, PL69, using a porphyrin system and to determine the accuracy of the oxidation products produced, as compared to what is expected in metabolism. PL69 is a reversed chloroquine (RCQ) that is active against chloroquine resistant malaria. Porphyrin oxidation systems have been shown to mimic in vitro enzymatic metabolism reactions. PL69 and its known metabolite, PL16, were incubated with the porphyrin system, and then the oxidation products were collected and separated by HPLC. The oxidation products were characterized by NMR and mass spectrometry and compared …

Rankings In Institutional Strategies And Processes: Impact Or Illusion, Ellen Hazelkorn, Tia Loukkola, Thérèse Zhang

Reports

Higher education is undergoing rapid change in response to developments occurring at national and international level. Today, universities’ performance worldwide is increasingly being measured using rankings which have been developed by governmental and/or commercial agencies, at both national and international level. The Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes (RISP) project is the first pan-European study of the impact and influence of rankings on European higher education institutions. The project has sought to build understanding of how rankings impact and influence the development of institutional strategies and processes and its results are presented in the publication.

Acoustic Performance Of Different Cold-Formed Studs In Double-Leaf Walls By Finite Element Analysis And Experiment, V. B. Nguyen, T. Morgan, M. A. English, M. A. Castellucci

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Cold-formed steel studs are often used in lightweight partition walls to provide structural stability but in the same time they change the acoustic performance of the whole system. The overall design of such lightweight structures for acoustic sound insulation becomes very complicated as the sound passing through stud needs to be quantified. One of the greatest challenges is to characterise the stud’s geometric effects on the sound transmission of the partition walls. This paper presents a Finite Element modelling approach and results into the acoustic performance of cold-formed studs in double-leaf walls which are placed in between a source room …

Latino Men Managing Hiv: An Appraisal Analysis Of Intersubjective Relations In The Discourse Of Five Research Interviews, Will Caston Nov 2014

Latino Men Managing Hiv: An Appraisal Analysis Of Intersubjective Relations In The Discourse Of Five Research Interviews, Will Caston

Dissertations and Theses

Latino men, particularly those who have sex with other men, have been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. Scholars have sought for nearly two decades to understand how various social and cultural factors in the Latino community exacerbate HIV risk among these men. Although following the advent of life-sustaining medications in 1996, HIV is often regarded as a manageable chronic illness, as opposed to a death sentence, scant attention has been devoted to how HIV-positive Latino men experience managing the illness. Among studies that have focused on HIV-positive persons' illness management, few Latino men have participated.

Using the Appraisal framework from Hallidayan …

Kennedy Space Center Transformed And Transforming, Scott T. Colleredo Nov 2014

Kennedy Space Center Transformed And Transforming, Scott T. Colleredo

Space Traffic Management Conference

NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida is four years into a fundamental transition from a limited-use, specialized launch site to a unique, full-service spaceport capable of meeting the varied needs of a number of different spacecraft, rockets, research and supply payloads, and ground support systems. Arguably no field center of a federal agency aside from a base of the Department of Defense has been tasked with such a fundamental transformation as Kennedy has undertaken during the previous four years. The work ranged changing the center's mission to adapting to a dramatically altered work force to the repurposing or decommissioning of …

A Study Of 2008-2009 Mean Scheduled Launch Days As A Key Factor For Planning Future Commercial Scheduling And Resource Allocations At Cape Canaveral Spaceport, Linsley B. Pietsch Nov 2014

A Study Of 2008-2009 Mean Scheduled Launch Days As A Key Factor For Planning Future Commercial Scheduling And Resource Allocations At Cape Canaveral Spaceport, Linsley B. Pietsch

Space Traffic Management Conference

This study encompassed initial, rescheduled, and actual launch dates at Cape Canaveral Spaceport where actual launches occurred in the years 2008 and 2009. Each mission launch date was calculated within the context of the mean number of days within each mission launch timeline, using descriptive statistical methodology. The research results illustrate the iterative scheduling associated to the Cape Canaveral Spaceport. The calculated mean times provide a preliminary glimpse of key factors to be considered by spaceport operations teams, launch providers, and customers at Cape Canaveral Spaceport. These factors will be useful to predict resource allocations and forecast commercial operational capacity, …

Cold-Formed Steel Channel Sections With Web Stiffeners Subjected To Local And Distortional Buckling — Part Ii: Parametric Study And Design Rule, Liping Wang, Ben Young Nov 2014

Cold-Formed Steel Channel Sections With Web Stiffeners Subjected To Local And Distortional Buckling — Part Ii: Parametric Study And Design Rule, Liping Wang, Ben Young

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

A parametric study of cold-formed steel channel sections with web stiffeners subjected to bending was performed using finite element analysis (FEA). An accurate finite element model was used for the parametric study. The parametric study included 75 beams of plain and lipped channel sections with web stiffeners. The beams were simply supported and subjected to four-point bending. The strengths and failure modes of specimens obtained from experimental and FEA results were compared with design strengths predicted using the direct strength method (DSM) specified in the North American Specification for cold-formed steel structures. The comparison shows that the design strengths predicted …

Control Power In Perfect Controlled Teleportation Via Partially Entangled Channels, Xi-Han Li, Shohini Ghose Nov 2014

Control Power In Perfect Controlled Teleportation Via Partially Entangled Channels, Xi-Han Li, Shohini Ghose

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We analyze and evaluate perfect controlled teleportation via three-qubit entangled channels from the point of view of the controller. The key idea in controlled teleportation is that the teleportation is performed only with the participation of the controller. We calculate a quantitative measure of the controller's power and establish a lower bound on the control power required for controlled teleportation. We show that the maximally entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state is a suitable channel for controlled teleportation of arbitrary single qubits-the controller's power meets the bound and the teleportation fidelity without the controller's permission is no better than the fidelity of a …

Cross-Design Synthesis For Extending The Applicability Of Trial Evidence When Treatment Effect Is Heterogeneous-I. Methodology, Ravi Varadhan, Carlos Weiss Nov 2014

Cross-Design Synthesis For Extending The Applicability Of Trial Evidence When Treatment Effect Is Heterogeneous-I. Methodology, Ravi Varadhan, Carlos Weiss

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide reliable evidence for approval of new treatments, informing clinical practice, and coverage decisions. The participants in RCTs are often not a representative sample of the larger at-risk population. Hence it is argued that the average treatment effect from the trial is not generalizable to the larger at-risk population. An essential premise of this argument is that there is significant heterogeneity in the treatment effect (HTE). We present a new method to extrapolate the treatment effect from a trial to a target group that is inadequately represented in the trial, when HTE is present. Our method …

Cross-Design Synthesis For Extending The Applicability Of Trial Evidence When Treatment Effect Is Heterogeneous. Part Ii. Application And External Validation, Carlos Weiss, Ravi Varadhan Nov 2014

Cross-Design Synthesis For Extending The Applicability Of Trial Evidence When Treatment Effect Is Heterogeneous. Part Ii. Application And External Validation, Carlos Weiss, Ravi Varadhan

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) generally provide the most reliable evidence. When participants in RCTs are selected with respect to characteristics that are potential treatment effect modifiers, the average treatment effect from the trials may not be applicable to a specific target population. We present a new method to project the treatment effect from a RCT to a target group that is inadequately represented in the trial when there is heterogeneity in the treatment effect (HTE). The method integrates RCT and observational data through cross-design synthesis. An essential component is to identify HTE and a calibration factor for unmeasured confounding for …

Ant Colonies Prefer Infected Over Uninfected Nest Sites, Luigi Pontieri, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Riley Graham, Jes Søe Pedersen, Timothy A. Linksvayer Nov 2014

Ant Colonies Prefer Infected Over Uninfected Nest Sites, Luigi Pontieri, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Riley Graham, Jes Søe Pedersen, Timothy A. Linksvayer

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

During colony relocation, the selection of a new nest involves exploration and assessment of potential sites followed by colony movement on the basis of a collective decision making process. Hygiene and pathogen load of the potential nest sites are factors worker scouts might evaluate, given the high risk of epidemics in group-living animals. Choosing nest sites free of pathogens is hypothesized to be highly efficient in invasive ants as each of their introduced populations is often an open network of nests exchanging individuals (unicolonial) with frequent relocation into new nest sites and low genetic diversity, likely making these species particularly …
