Applications Of Wavelets And Neural Networks For Classification Of Power System Dynamics Events, Samir Avdakovic, Amir Nuhanovic, Mirza Kusljugic, Elvisa Becirovic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper investigates the possibility of classifying power system dynamics events using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and a neural network (NN) by analyzing one variable at a single network bus. Following a disturbance in the power system, it will propagate through the system in the form of low-frequency electromechanical oscillations (LFEOs) in a frequency range of up to 5 Hz. DWT allows the identification of components of the LFEO, their frequencies, and magnitudes. After determining the energy components' share of the analyzed signal using DWT and Parseval's theorem, the input data for the classification process using a NN are obtained. …

Neuro-Fuzzy Network Approach For Modeling Submicron Mosfets: Application To Mosfet Subcircuit Simulation, Amirhossein Abdollahinohoji, Fardad Farokhi, Majid Zamani Jan 2014

Neuro-Fuzzy Network Approach For Modeling Submicron Mosfets: Application To Mosfet Subcircuit Simulation, Amirhossein Abdollahinohoji, Fardad Farokhi, Majid Zamani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A neuro-fuzzy network approach is developed to model the nonlinear behavior of submicron metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). The proposed model is trained and implemented as a MOSFET in a software environment. The training data are obtained through various simulations of a MOSFET Berkeley short channel insulated-gate field-effect transistor model 3 (BSIM3) in HSPICE, and the trained model is utilized to simulate the MOSFET device. The obtained result shows good and noticeable agreement between the numerical result of the original model in HSPICE and the neuro-fuzzy approach in the device and subcircuit modeling.

Simultaneous Identification And Correction Of Measurement And Branch Parameter Errors, Mehdi Ahmadi Jirdehi, Mehrdad Tarafdar Hagh, Kazem Zare Jan 2014

Simultaneous Identification And Correction Of Measurement And Branch Parameter Errors, Mehdi Ahmadi Jirdehi, Mehrdad Tarafdar Hagh, Kazem Zare

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The performance of the state estimation (SE) depends on the accuracy of the received measured data, as well as the parameter data of the power system. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for the simultaneous identification and correction of measurement and branch parameter errors (series and shunt admittances) in the power system SE problem. The proposed method uses Lagrange multipliers for the identification and correction of branch parameter errors without the need for a-priori specification of suspect parameter vectors. Erroneous measurements and branch parameter values can be corrected using the proposed method to estimate the measurement and branch …

New Throughput-Based Antenna Selection Scheme, Mohammad Lari, Abbas Mohammadi, Abdolali Abdipour

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new throughput-based transmit antenna selection (AS) scheme is evaluated. First, a closed-form solution for the throughput rate of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, with a truncated selective repeat automatic repeat request (TSR-ARQ) or selective repeat plus go-back-N automatic repeat request (SR+GBN-ARQ) protocol at the data link layer, is proposed. In addition, a throughput-based AS technique with adaptive modulation is also investigated. For this purpose, the throughput and packet error rates of a MIMO system with a transmit AS and TSR-ARQ protocol at the data link layer are analyzed. This study is conducted in 2 different cases. …

Design And Realization Of A Welding Oscillator, Muci̇z Özcan Jan 2014

Design And Realization Of A Welding Oscillator, Muci̇z Özcan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Welding is one of the most popular methods to combine metal pieces in manufacturing processes. Arc welding, among all welding techniques, is the most commonly used in manufacturing due to its cost and flexibility. During the manufacturing process, arc welding is either performed by an operator or by automatic tools such as welding oscillators. Using automatic tools has advantages over manual use, as the process will be faster, cheaper, and have less welding flaws. In this paper, a homemade welding oscillator and the method to manufacture it are presented. The presented welding oscillator can be manufactured for a very low …

Comparison Of Ais And Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Methods On The Classification Of Breast Cancer And Diabetes Datasets, Seral Özşen, Rahi̇me Ceylan Jan 2014

Comparison Of Ais And Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Methods On The Classification Of Breast Cancer And Diabetes Datasets, Seral Özşen, Rahi̇me Ceylan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Data reduction is an indispensable part of pattern classification processes in many cases. If the number of samples is excessive, sample reduction or data reduction algorithms can be used for an effective processing time and reliable successive results. Many methods have been used for data reduction. Fuzzy c-means is one of these methods and it is widely used in such applications as clustering algorithms. In this study, we applied a different clustering algorithm, an artificial immune system (AIS), for the data reduction process. We realized the performance evaluation experiments on the standard Chainlink and Iris datasets, while the main application …

Horizontal Dilution Of Precision-Based Ultra-Wideband Positioning Technique For Indoor Environments, Kerem Küçük Jan 2014

Horizontal Dilution Of Precision-Based Ultra-Wideband Positioning Technique For Indoor Environments, Kerem Küçük

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology provides considerable performance in many indoor localization problems thanks to its very wide spectrum and high-resolution characteristics. In this paper, we propose using the horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP) to decrease the localization error in indoor environments for UWB localization systems. To achieve this aim, first we determine the positioning accuracy of a commercially available UWB positioning system using laboratory experiments. Next, the results of the position estimations obtained by the HDOP are compared with the experimental results acquired by the UWB positioning system. Finally, we investigate a detailed comparison with the least squares (LS), nonlinear regression …

The Gpl Meets The Ucc: Does Free Software Come With A Warranty Of No Infringement Of Patents And Copyrights?, Stephen M. Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The GNU General Public License, known as the GPL, is the cornerstone of free software. The GPL has served as the organizing document for free software, providing a structure that has helped transformed the development of software and electronic devices. Software licensed under the GPL may be freely copied and adapted. The source code for the software is made available, to enable anyone to study and change it. The GPL does have "copyleft" restrictions, intended to keep the software free for others. If someone adapts and redistributes GPL’d software, they must likewise allow access to their source code. The GPL …

"Retire And Teach" Six Years On, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2014

"Retire And Teach" Six Years On, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This is a follow up to a 2007 essay I wrote about what it might take for a well-seasoned practitioner to join a law school faculty as a tenure track professor. Having now wended my way up (or down) that track for six years plus, my intended audience this time includes the original one, those seasoned veterans of the law practice trenches who may think but should never utter out loud the words “I would like to retire and teach,” but now also my colleagues in academia who are facing what looks to be the greatest reshuffling of the system …

All Convictions Are Not The Same: Rethinking Cupe's Abuse Of Process Doctrine In Cases Involving Plea Bargains, Lara Kinkartz Jan 2014

All Convictions Are Not The Same: Rethinking Cupe's Abuse Of Process Doctrine In Cases Involving Plea Bargains, Lara Kinkartz

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Historically, when a criminal conviction was introduced as evidence of guilt in a subsequent civil action, the convicted party was permitted to introduce rebuttal evidence to negate or mitigate the effect of the prior conviction. However, the Supreme Court of Canada’s 2003 decision in Toronto (City) v Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 79 has resulted in an unprecedented restriction on the ability to rebut a prior conviction. As a result of the CUPE decision, the doctrine of abuse of process now precludes rebuttal evidence in most cases. CUPE’s expanded abuse of process doctrine is troubling because, to date, …

Autonomous Weapons Systems: Taking The Human Out Of International Humanitarian Law, James Foy Jan 2014

Autonomous Weapons Systems: Taking The Human Out Of International Humanitarian Law, James Foy

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Once confined to science fiction, killer robots will soon be a reality. Both the USA and the UK are currently developing weapons systems that may be capable of autonomously targeting and killing enemy combatants within the next 25 years. According to Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Convention and customary international law, weapons systems must be capable of operating within the principles of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). This paper will demonstrate that without significant restrictions on the use of autonomous weapons systems (AWS) or the creation of a new legal framework, the use of AWS is problematic. First, there are …

Reciprocity: Fair Trade Of Free Trade? Challenging American Electricity Regulation Under Nafta, Hugh Goodday Jan 2014

Reciprocity: Fair Trade Of Free Trade? Challenging American Electricity Regulation Under Nafta, Hugh Goodday

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Restructuring in the American electricity market by the United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has had a pervasive effect on Canadian utilities and their provincial regulators. This article argues that FERC’s application of Order No. 888 and its market-based rate authorization to Canadian utilities violates the doctrine of national treatment, a core tenet of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and supplants the principle of free trade with the principle of fair trade. Order No. 888 effectively requires Canadian utilities that export electricity across American transmission systems to provide their American trading partners with reciprocal access on comparable …

Stories Of 0s: Transgender Women, Monstrous Bodies, And The Canadian Prison System, Allison Smith Jan 2014

Stories Of 0s: Transgender Women, Monstrous Bodies, And The Canadian Prison System, Allison Smith

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Prisons regulate identities and what rights get recognized and protected in a prison setting. Gender is a core element of identity that is policed by the prison system and by the law that governs prisons. Focusing on developments within Canadian transgender jurisprudence, this paper explores how prisoners’ bodies that do not conform to a strict gender binary are defined as inhuman. By critically assessing the prison system and prison policy, this essay demonstrates how Canadian law has often failed to address the needs and lived experiences of transgender women in their interactions with the penal system. As case law demonstrates, …

Complicating The Simple Probability Principle: Developing A New Approach To Probabilistic Reasoning In Personal Injury Litigation, Nayha Acharya Jan 2014

Complicating The Simple Probability Principle: Developing A New Approach To Probabilistic Reasoning In Personal Injury Litigation, Nayha Acharya

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Canadian courts use simple probability reasoning inconsistently in personal injury litigation, subjecting litigants to irregular legal principles and potentially improper compensation. Turning to foundational principles of tort litigation, I suggest a new framework for the availability of simple probability that would promote greater coherence. Simple probability reasoning is understood as an alternative standard of proof that enables compensation for a loss proportional to the likelihood that the loss will occur. Accordingly, the availability of simple probability is thought to depend on which types of facts (past vs. future vs. hypothetical facts) are amenable to balance of probabilities proof versus simple …

A Method For Estimating Ice Mass Loss From Relative Insar Observations: Application To The Vatnajökull Ice Cap, Iceland, Wenliang Zhao, Falk Amelung, Timothy H. Dixon, Shimon Wdowinski, Rocco Malservisi Jan 2014

A Method For Estimating Ice Mass Loss From Relative Insar Observations: Application To The Vatnajökull Ice Cap, Iceland, Wenliang Zhao, Falk Amelung, Timothy H. Dixon, Shimon Wdowinski, Rocco Malservisi

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We present a new method for estimating ice mass loss from glaciers and ice sheets using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time‐series data. We use a linear inversion method based on observations of nearby bedrock uplift and a solution for surface loading of an elastic half‐space. The method assumes that mass loss is focused on lower elevation terminal regions of the glacier or ice sheet, and that there is an exponential decrease in thinning rate toward the higher elevation interior. We apply the method to uplift rates between 1995 and 2009 near Vatnajökull, Iceland. The data reveal up to 13 …

The Effects Of Offshoring On Judgment Quality In A Management Accounting Task, Daniel D. Selby Jan 2014

The Effects Of Offshoring On Judgment Quality In A Management Accounting Task, Daniel D. Selby

Accounting Faculty Publications

This study investigates the effects of offshoring on judgment quality in a management accounting context (i.e., capital budgeting). The effects of offshoring on judgment quality are understudied and might explain the ineffective and inefficient use of information in offshoring arrangements (Srikanth and Puranam, 2011). A 3x2 between-subject experiment was conducted where participants were assigned to one of three experimental conditions: onshore team, offshore team, or no team. Two dependent variables were measured for judgment quality: effectiveness and efficiency. My results suggest that offshoring may have detrimental effects on efficiency. However, I also find that offshoring does not affect effectiveness.

Resolving Exeter Book Riddles 74 And 33: Stormy Allomorphs Of Water, Thomas Klein, William F. Klein, David Delehanty Jan 2014

Resolving Exeter Book Riddles 74 And 33: Stormy Allomorphs Of Water, Thomas Klein, William F. Klein, David Delehanty

Quidditas

The following article argues that the idea of the allomorph is a productive way to view two “transformation” riddles from the Old English collection of riddles in the Exeter Book. In the view of the authors, Riddles 74 and 33 should both be solved generally as “water,” and specifically as “in the form of a thunderstorm.” Both riddles dramatize the multiple forms that water may take, and meditate on the divinely-ordained grandeur of the storm and the particular paradox of a thing being both immensely violent and necessary for life on earth. Understanding how these riddles play out these truths …

Was Frederick Barbarossa The First Holy Roman Emperor?, Thomas Renna Jan 2014

Was Frederick Barbarossa The First Holy Roman Emperor?, Thomas Renna

Quidditas

Frederick Barbarossa (1152-90) was the first German emperor—later to be called the Holy Roman Emperor—who gave considerable attention to the three terms of the imperial title. His own registers and contemporary chronicles reveal frequent references to the three components of both his title and the Holy Roman Empire. I argue that Barbarossa was the first to attempt to integrate them into the German traditions of the empire, in particular the method of electing the king of the Romans, the historical ties with Charlemagne, and the concept of the empire as an amalgam of smaller principalities. He was the first to …

John Bale’S Kynge Johan As English Nationalist Propaganda, G. D. George Jan 2014

John Bale’S Kynge Johan As English Nationalist Propaganda, G. D. George

Quidditas

John Bale is generally associated with the English Reformation rather than the Tudor government. It may be that Bale’s well-know protestant polemics tend to overshadow his place in Thomas Cromwell’s propaganda machine, and that Bale’s Kynge Johan is more a propaganda piece for the Tudor monarchy than it is just another of his Protestant dramas..

Hagar In Lds Scripture And Thought, Andrew C. Smith Jan 2014

Hagar In Lds Scripture And Thought, Andrew C. Smith

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

LDS discourse vis-à-vis Hagar has changed through the years since the foundation of the Church. Her story has been considered and utilized in a number of ways, the most prominent being as a defense of plural marriage. This paper traces the LDS usages of Hagar’s story as well as proposing a new allegorical interpretation of her place within the Abrahamic drama through literary connections in the Hebrew Bible combined with Restoration scripture.

Mitt Romney And "I Mormoni": A 2012 Analysis Of Italy's Print Media, Mauro Properzi Jan 2014

Mitt Romney And "I Mormoni": A 2012 Analysis Of Italy's Print Media, Mauro Properzi

BYU Studies

The author, a native of Italy, considers how the 2012 "Mormon Moment" (prompted primarily by Mitt Romney's campaign for the U.S. presidency) was covered by the Italian print and online media. He analyzes 344 articles, dated between January 1 and October 31, 2012, that use the words "Mormon," "Mormons," or "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," examining their portrayal of Mormonism through the lens of three questions: How did Mitt Romney's Mormonism affect the media's portrayal of his candidacy? What historical, social, and theological images of the LDS Church emerged from these accounts? And how did reports on …

The Ten Lost Tribes: A World History, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, Jeffrey R. Chadwick Jan 2014

The Ten Lost Tribes: A World History, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, Jeffrey R. Chadwick

BYU Studies

The Ten Lost Tribes: A World History is an ambitious treatment by Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, an associate professor of history and Middle Eastern and Islamic studies at New York University. The subject is a departure from the focus of his book The Dao of Muhammad: A Cultural History of Muslims in Late China, but the story of the Ten Lost Tribes is intriguing, and the assembled tales of how people throughout the world and throughout history have related to the loss of the Israelite tribes make for a fascinating read. The reader should be aware that The Ten Lost Tribes …

Anti-Waste, Michael Pappas Jan 2014

Anti-Waste, Michael Pappas

Publications

It may be a bad idea to waste resources, but is it illegal? Legally speaking, what does "waste" even mean? Though the concept may appear completely subjective, this Article builds a framework for understanding how the law identifies and addresses waste.

Drawing upon property and natural resource doctrines, this Article finds that the law selects from a catalog of five specific, and sometimes competing, societal values to define waste. These values include: (1) economic efficiency; (2) human flourishing: (3) concern for future generations: (4) stability and consistency; and, (5) ecology. The law recognizes waste in terms of one of or …

Madonella's Other Convent: "Platonick" Ladies, Randy Rakes, And The "Mahometan" Paradise, Samara Anne Cahill

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In eighteenth-century England both the Roman Catholic convent andthe Muslim harem were stereotyped as feminine spaces of religious alterity and sexual subversion. As a result, those who wished to defend women's learning often resorted to complex xenophobic representational strategies as a way of disassociating learned women from these spaces. I argue that the stereotypical "Platonick lady:' as a satirical figure that negotiated both these sites of supposed sexual hypocrisy and foreign dominion, ought to be considered a complex but key trope in the history of feminist orientalism. This is because, in her hypocritical obsession with the disembodied "soul;' the …
