Sharing Is Airing: Employee Concerted Activity On Social Media After Hispanics United, Ryan Kennedy Nov 2014

Sharing Is Airing: Employee Concerted Activity On Social Media After Hispanics United, Ryan Kennedy

Duke Law & Technology Review

Section 7 of the United States’ National Labor Relations Act allows groups of American workers to engage in concerted activity for the purposes of collective bargaining or for “other mutual aid or protection.” This latter protection has been extended in cases such as Lafayette Park Hotel to workers outside the union context. Starting in 2005, the National Labor Relations Board increasingly signaled to employers that concerted activity may take place on social media such as Facebook. However, the Board proper delivered its first written opinion articulating these rules in the 2012 case of Hispanics United of Buffalo, Inc. There, the …

Restoration Of Building Heritage Versus Innovation, Ilirjana Mejzini, Gjejlane Hoxha Nov 2014

Restoration Of Building Heritage Versus Innovation, Ilirjana Mejzini, Gjejlane Hoxha

UBT International Conference

The continuous developments in science and technology are rapidly influencing many aspects of daily life. The benefits of innovation not only affect the living environment and way of life; they also hugely influence our way of thinking and the general perception of our surroundings. On the other hand, the preservation of cultural heritage is a moral responsibility through which the work and legacy of our ancestors is carried onto younger generations. Heritage manifested through buildings, which can be considered as a vivid trace of the past, carries with it historical and scientific significance and gives evidence of the level of …

Theoretical Analysis Of Dynamic General Equilibrium Model, Mimi Kodheli, Arjeta Vokshi

UBT International Conference

Central Bank is one of the most important institutions of a country because its responsibility is to draw and implement the monetary policy. The central bank, in order to accomplish this responsibility, has to have a clearly defined main objective, the instruments that will use to achieve the objective, and it should be able to make precise or very good forecasts of macroeconomic variables. In order to make these forecasts, the central bank should first of all understand every monetary transmission mechanism and determine the most effective one. The success or non-success of monetary policy, living apart the other factors, …

Steering Spatial Development In The Vienna Agglomeration, Thomas Dillinger Nov 2014

Steering Spatial Development In The Vienna Agglomeration, Thomas Dillinger

UBT International Conference

After the falling down of the “iron curtain” Vienna starts to grow again. It is now a metropolitan area with about 2.6 Mio. inhabitants. Vienna is surrounded by Lower Austria, which is one of the nine countries (Bundesländer) of Austria. Spatial Planning is based on the Austrian Constitution a complex matter. The Federal State, the Countries and the Municipalities have competences in Spatial Planning. Thus, in the agglomeration we are confronted with different spatial planning legislation, instruments and institution. In this situation basically three instruments have been developed to steer spatial development in the Vienna agglomeration: Lower Austria has passed two …

The Spatial Nature Of Entrepreneurship, Economic Prosperity And, The Informal Economy, Besnik Skenderi, Diamanta Skenderi

UBT International Conference

Businesses are not refining products and they are not adding any value on the sold products, but they are using the opportunity to purchase goods with lower price and then sell those products with a higher price, where the difference between those prices is profit. In addition, knowledge is an important factor, which explains the arrays of known profit opportunities, which entrepreneurs face, and those opportunities are not equally discoverable in all locations. The issue with classical and neoclassical models of land rent is a fact that they were based on an assumption where perfect knowledge of transportation requirements and …

A Synthesis Of Architectural Form For Three Different Structural Systems, Hektor Cullufi, Altin Bidaj, Ervin Paci, Irakli Premti, Drilona Disha Nov 2014

A Synthesis Of Architectural Form For Three Different Structural Systems, Hektor Cullufi, Altin Bidaj, Ervin Paci, Irakli Premti, Drilona Disha

UBT International Conference

Architectural form is often used but less frequently defined. Architectural form is an inclusive term that refers primarily to a building’s external outline or shape, and to a lesser degree references its internal organization and unifying principles. Shape encompasses various visual and relational properties; namely size, color and texture, position, orientation and visual inertia. Form is therefore generally and primarily understood as the shape or three dimensional massing, but also encompasses additional architectural aspects including structural configuration and form, in so far as they may organize and unify an architectural design.

Patterns And Practices Of Women's Leadership In The Yorkshire Quaker Community, 1760-1820, Helen Plant Nov 2014

Patterns And Practices Of Women's Leadership In The Yorkshire Quaker Community, 1760-1820, Helen Plant

Quaker Studies

By the second half of the eighteenth century, women ministers had become the principal upholders of the spiritual life of Quakerism in Yorkshire. Drawing on a range of sources including the institutional records of Quaker Meetings, personal correspondence and spiritual journals and autobiographies, this paper aims to shed light on the precise nature of female leadership in the Religious Society of Friends and to contribute to greater understanding of the conditions under which it became dominant. It suggests that the growing tendency for women to outnumber men as ministers was closely linked to wider social and economic trends within contemporary …

Daniel Eccleston Of Lancaster 1745-1821: A Man Not Afraid To Stand On The Shoulders Of Giants, Carolyn Downs

Quaker Studies

It is unusual for an historian to be able to establish in great detail the life of any but those considered one of 'the great and the good'. The substantial amount of documentary sources, both by, and about, the Quaker radical Daniel Eccleston of Lancaster (1745-1821), provide an opportunity to view a turbulent period in British history through the experiences of one individual. The links between industrial and scientific advance, Nonconformity in religion and calls for political reform were growing increasingly common as the eighteenth century progressed. This paper attempts to show the centrality of Eccleston's Quaker upbringing to his …

From Ploughing The Wilderness To Hedging The Vineyard: Meanings And Uses Of Husbandry Among Quakers, C. 1650-C. 1860, Erin A. Bell

Quaker Studies

The parable of the husbandman was of great significance to Protestants of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, for many early modern religious groups developed aspects of their beliefs and identities through its interpretation. This article considers the ways in which re presentations of the husbandman differed between Friends and other Protestants, and particularly evolved within Quakerism from the mid-seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. It considers broad shifts, starting fr om the desire to cultivate the literal and spiritual wilderness described by George Fox, and culminating in the need for spiritual husbandmen to maintain the protective 'hedge' and keep the existing stock, …

Hindu Responses To Religious Diversity And The Nature Of Post-Mortem Progress, Ankur Barua Nov 2014

Hindu Responses To Religious Diversity And The Nature Of Post-Mortem Progress, Ankur Barua

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

THE last two hundred years of Hindu–Christian encounters have produced distinctive forms of Hindu thought which, while often rooted in the broad philosophical-cultural continuities of Vedic outlooks, grappled with, on the one hand, the colonial pressures of European modernity, and, on the other hand, the numerous critiques by Christian theologians and missionaries on the Hindu life-worlds. Thus, the spectrum of Hindu responses from Raja Rammohun Roy through Swami Vivekananda to S. Radhakrishnan demonstrates attempts to creatively engage with Christian representations of Hindu belief and practice, by accepting their prima facie validity at one level while negating their adequacy at another.

Reluctant Absolutist: Malcolm Sparkes' Conscientious Objections To World War I, Bert Den Boggende Nov 2014

Reluctant Absolutist: Malcolm Sparkes' Conscientious Objections To World War I, Bert Den Boggende

Quaker Studies

The existing secondary literature has treated the appearance of World War I conscientious objectors (COs) before the tribunals as rather straightforward and uncomplicated. As the case of Malcolm Sparkes indicates, the process was much less straightforward and much more complex. The arduous process also shows that the power of the local tribunals was enlarged and that of the Pelham Committee reduced, due to the wrong decision - as the government acknowledged - by the local tribunal at Slough. The decision resulted in Sparkes becoming a reluctant or alternativist absolutist, a nomenclature hitherto ignored in the literature. Sparkes' case also suggests …

The Persecution Of 'An Innocent People' In Seventeenth-Century England, Raymond Ayoub Nov 2014

The Persecution Of 'An Innocent People' In Seventeenth-Century England, Raymond Ayoub

Quaker Studies

This article gives an outline survey of the beliefs and practices of seventeenth century Friends, the spiritual-religious basis of these, the existing or enacted laws with which these came into conflict, and the ensuing penalties inflicted on Friends for disobeying these strictures. While there is an abundance of relevant material in print, this account endeavors to give a comprehensive and systematic summary of the pertinent laws and some of their consequences to Friends. Though the penalties were not of equal frequency or severity, they point to limitations placed on Friends in their effort to be faithful to their beliefs.

Between And Beyond Canons: Mirabai And Hadewijch In Relation To Scripture And The Self, Holly Hillgardner Nov 2014

Between And Beyond Canons: Mirabai And Hadewijch In Relation To Scripture And The Self, Holly Hillgardner

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Mirabai, a sixteenth century bhakta, wrote passionate songs of her desire for God. Burning for him, she employed the genre of viraha-bhakti, a mystical eroticism of longing from the Vaiṣṇava tradition, as she begged for him to “[c]ome and extinguish the fire of separation.” Hadewijch, a thirteenth-century Beguine from low-country Europe, wrote poems, letters, and prose that tell of her longing to become Love itself—to be “God with God.” Despite their myriad differences across traditions, miles, and years, Hadewijch and Mirabai can each be said to practice love-longing as her primary contemplative mode.

An Absent Presence: Quaker Narratives Of Journeys To America And Barbados, 1671-81, Hilary Hinds Nov 2014

An Absent Presence: Quaker Narratives Of Journeys To America And Barbados, 1671-81, Hilary Hinds

Quaker Studies

Through case studies of writings by George Fox, Alice Curwen and Joan Vokins, this article identifies a marked discrepancy in style and focus between early Quaker accounts of journeys to the American mainland and to Barbados. Accounts of the mainland journeys are detailed and often dramatic narratives which, like most early Quaker writing, read the spiritual in and from the places and people encountered, whilst those concerned with Barbados are brief, bland and apparently unconcerned with the immanence of God in the material and social world. An explanation for this discrepancy is sought in the particular cultural and social circumstances …

How Successful Were Quakers At Science?, Geoffrey Cantor Nov 2014

How Successful Were Quakers At Science?, Geoffrey Cantor

Quaker Studies

The impressively high proportion of Quakers in the Royal Society has often been cited to support the claim that Quakers have been far more successful at science than the general population. However, this supporting evidence is shown to be highly problematic and demonstrably false. Moreover, attempts to establish the superiority of Quakers in science have diverted attention away from more interesting and important historical questions.
