Using the data taken at the Pierre Auger Observatory between December 2004 and December 2012, we have examined the implications of the distributions of depths of atmospheric shower maximum (Xmax), using a hybrid technique, for composition and hadronic interaction models. We do this by fitting the distributions with predictions from a variety of hadronic interaction models for variations in the composition of the primary cosmic rays and examining the quality of the fit. Regardless of what interaction model is assumed, we find that our data are not well described by a mix of protons and iron nuclei over most of …

We report a study of the distributions of the depth of maximum, Xmax, of extensive air-shower profiles with energies above 1017.8eV as observed with the fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The analysis method for selecting a data sample with minimal sampling bias is described in detail as well as the experimental cross-checks and systematic uncertainties. Furthermore, we discuss the detector acceptance and the resolution of the Xmax measurement and provide parametrizations thereof as a function of energy. The energy dependence of the mean and standard deviation of the Xmax distributions are compared to air-shower simulations for different nuclear …

The Country Club Sport: The Decline Of African-Americans In Baseball, Elijah Stewart

This season Major League Baseball announced that African-American players only comprised 8.3% of rosters on this year’s Opening Day. This would be tied for the lowest number ever recorded by the Institute of Ethics and Diversity in Sports since 1990, their first year of research. In 1990, TIDE reported that 17 percent of the players were black; other tallies have put the high mark as 1986, when the figure was 19 percent. The rise in popularity of basketball and football, along with a lack of funds and interests interest in baseball amongst the black community has caused the decline; but …

Objective Countries around the world have increasingly adopted pictorial health warning labels (HWLs) for tobacco packages to warn consumers about smoking-related risks. Research on how pictorial HWLs work has primarily analysed self-reported responses to HWLs; studies at the neural level comparing the brain's response to different types of HWLs may provide an important complement to prior studies, especially if self-reported responses are systematically biased. In this study we characterise the brain's response to three types of pictorial HWLs for which prior self-report studies indicated different levels of efficacy.
Methods Current smokers rated pictorial HWLs and then observed the same HWLs …

Effects Of The Standards Of Training, Certification And Watchkeeping For Seafarers (Stcw) 78 Convention, As Amended, On Kenya's Maritime Education And Training (Met), Michelle Hellena Wanga
World Maritime University Dissertations
The dissertation is a study of the effects of the STCW 78, as amended, on Kenya’s MET. In this regard, it takes into consideration the recent requirements of the 2010 Manila amendments to the said Convention, and the set International Maritime Organization (IMO) deadline for Governments to comply with the mentioned provisions. Sequentially, the work examines the effects of the Convention, as amended, on Kenya’s Maritime Education and Training (MET) by initially exploring the historical and contemporary status of the country’s MET. Furthermore, it delivers a comparative analysis of Kenya’s strategies in the execution of the STCW 78, as amended, …

This study aims to analyze mediation role of cultural institutional element on the influence of societal values on the disclosure of Islamic values. The cultural institutional elements analyzed are legal system, capital market development, and human development. This research covers 102 Islamic banks for the data of 2010 to 2012 around the world. The study finds that capital market development is the only element that has mediation role on the influence of culture on the disclosure of Islamic values. The capital market development has a partial mediation role on the influence of humane orientation on the disclosure of Islamic values …

The objectives of this research are to get knowledge about what contributions that higher education can provide to build students’ ethical perception and awareness of fraud prevention. To achieve these objectives, the research was conducted toward accounting students at Yogyakarta State University. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to 149 students. The analysis of the data used path analysis. Based on the result of the survey to the respondents, the research provides evidence that higher education has a positive and significant influence to build students’ ethical perception through internalizing objectivity and professional responsibility in the intermediate auditing course. In addition, …

Faculty Publications
A two-semester multi-disciplinary Global Engineering Outreach (GEO) course was initiated in 2007 to provide an opportunity for junior and senior-level engineering and technology students to design and implement humanitarian-based engineering projects in developing communities. Recently, the course was integrated with a sociology course to enhance the educational opportunities between social scientists and engineers. During the GEO course, students work on small-scale projects that are selected in conjunction with members of the developing communities. Students regularly interact with community members during project development. Following the GEO course, students participate in a two-week implementation trip. Learning outcomes associated with the course are …

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental properties that describe its response to external electric and magnetic fields. They can be extracted from Compton-scattering data—and have been, with good accuracy, in the case of the proton. In contradistinction, information for the neutron requires the use of Compton scattering from nuclear targets. Here, we report a new measurement of elastic photon scattering from deuterium using quasimonoenergetic tagged photons at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. These first new data in more than a decade effectively double the world data set. Their energy range overlaps with previous experiments and extends …
Gang Risk Factors And Academic Readiness In A Southern Middle School, James Martinez, Jeremy Tost, Shani Wilfred, Larry Hilgert
Gang Risk Factors And Academic Readiness In A Southern Middle School, James Martinez, Jeremy Tost, Shani Wilfred, Larry Hilgert
Georgia Educational Researcher
The current Georgia study examines middle-school-aged gang and non-gang members regarding the risk factors of gang membership and potential effects of these risk factors on academic achievement. Participants, 406 eighth grade students from a suburban middle-school, completed a 42-item survey assessing an array of demographic and risk factor variables. In addition, students provided self-report information regarding their success on national standardized testing used to measure academics readiness. Of the 28 variables analyzed, lower academic readiness was associated with ethnicity and/or gang membership. Findings are discussed in light of the complexity of the gang issue and the importance of recognizing the …
