Moving From Education 1.0 Through Education 2.0 Towards Education 3.0, Jackie Gerstein

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article compares the developments of the Internet and the Web with those of education. The web influences people's way of thinking, doing and being, and people influence the development and content of the web. The evolution of the web from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and now to Web 3.0 can be used as a metaphor of how education should also be evolving, as a movement from Education 1.0 towards that of Education 3.0. The Web, Internet, Social Media, and the evolving, emerging technologies have created a perfect storm or convergence of resources, tools, open and free information access. …

An Investigation Of Dialect Variation And Spelling: First Graders' Representation Of Final Consonant Clusters, Maegan Rebekah Inzer Nov 2014

An Investigation Of Dialect Variation And Spelling: First Graders' Representation Of Final Consonant Clusters, Maegan Rebekah Inzer

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate first grade Mainstream American English (MAE) and African American English (AAE) speakers' representation of final consonant clusters in Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVCC) words in spelling tasks with three stimulus conditions: real words- child names the picture, real words- examiner names the picture, and nonwords- examiner names the picture. No significant differences were identified between the groups in spelling CVC words. When spelling CVCC words, the AAE group had significantly more dialect responses (spelling CVCC words as CVC words) compared to the MAE group across all tasks. AAE speakers gave fewer AAE spellings as the …

“Fu Hao”, “Fu Hao”, “Fuhao” Or “Fu Hao”? A Cataloger’S Navigation Of An Ancient Chinese Woman’S Name, Junli Diao

Publications and Research

Chinese language catalogers’ work is not only challenged by the revolution in cataloging standards and principles, but also by ancient Chinese names that emerged in archaeological discoveries and Chinese classic texts, which create a significant impact on records description and retrieval in terms of consistency and accuracy. This article takes an example of an ancient Chinese lady’s name that is inconsistently romanized and described in OCLC and attempts to explore the appropriate form in an authority record through the consulting both Western and Eastern scholarly practices. This article has a further investigation of the evolving history of pre-Qin Chinese names …

Catechol Oxidation By Ozone And Hydroxyl Radicals At The Air-Water Interface, Elizabeth A. Pillar, Robert C. Camm, Marcelo I. Guzman Nov 2014

Catechol Oxidation By Ozone And Hydroxyl Radicals At The Air-Water Interface, Elizabeth A. Pillar, Robert C. Camm, Marcelo I. Guzman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic emissions of aromatic hydrocarbons promptly react with hydroxyl radicals undergoing oxidation to form phenols and polyphenols (e.g., catechol) typically identified in the complex mixture of humic-like substances (HULIS). Because further processing of polyphenols in secondary organic aerosols (SOA) can continue mediated by a mechanism of ozonolysis at interfaces, a better understanding about how these reactions proceed at the air–water interface is needed. This work shows how catechol, a molecular probe of the oxygenated aromatic hydrocarbons present in SOA, can contribute interfacial reactive species that enhance the production of HULIS under atmospheric conditions. Reactive semiquinone radicals are quickly produced upon …

Executive Functioning In The Context Of Urban Poverty: An Examination Of Poverty Related Stress And Its Relationships To Academic Achievement, Jacquelyn L. Doxie Nov 2014

Executive Functioning In The Context Of Urban Poverty: An Examination Of Poverty Related Stress And Its Relationships To Academic Achievement, Jacquelyn L. Doxie

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Living in urban poverty has been linked to numerous negative conditions that disproportionately expose low-income urban youth and their families to severe and chronic stressors (Collins et al., 2010; DeNavas-Walt, Proctor, and Smith, 2012; Sznitman, Reisel, and Romer, 2011). Research has consistently shown a strong relationship between these stressors and numerous negative outcomes that can impact an adolescent emotionally, behaviorally, and academically (Conger et al., 2002). This dissertation is focused on the area of academic achievement, an outcome consistently found to be negatively impacted by poverty (Rouse and Fantuzzo, 2009). Based on Bronfenbrenner’s model of bio-ecological human development (Bronfenbrenner and …

Behavioral Measures Of Audibility As Indicators Of Hearing Aid Benefit, Bethany Lauren Burkeen Nov 2014

Behavioral Measures Of Audibility As Indicators Of Hearing Aid Benefit, Bethany Lauren Burkeen

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the possibility of quantifying hearing aid benefit by means of the Audibility Index. The Audibility Index (AI) is defined as the amount of the audible speech spectrum available to a listener. Twenty-one participants with bilateral sensorineural hearing losses, each required to wear bilateral hearing aids, were recruited for this study. Utilizing FM tone stimuli, audiometric thresholds were established for each individual conventionally under earphones for the right and left ears, unaided in a sound field, and aided in a sound field. The thresholds were placed on a count-the-dot audiogram in order to calculate AIs for each individual. …

The Adaptor Protein 1 (Ap-1) Complex At The Heart Of Post-Golgi Trafficking In A Corticotrope Tumor Cell Line, Mathilde L. Bonnemaison Nov 2014

The Adaptor Protein 1 (Ap-1) Complex At The Heart Of Post-Golgi Trafficking In A Corticotrope Tumor Cell Line, Mathilde L. Bonnemaison

Doctoral Dissertations

Peptides act as chemical messengers to regulate a many physiological functions. First synthesized as inactive precursors, peptides undergo a set of post-translational modifications to gain bioactivity en route through the secretory pathway. Peptides exit the Golgi apparatus in secretory granules (SGs) which are stored until a stimulus triggers their exocytosis. The adaptor protein 1A (AP-1A) is required for SG maturation in neuroendocrine cells and for the formation of specialized SGs such as the glue granules in Drosophila, Weibel-Palade bodies in endothelial cells and rhoptries in Toxoplasma gondii. AP-1A is a heterotetrameric complex (γ/β1/µ1A/σ1) which interacts with cargo proteins …

Ten Integrated Performance Assessments For A Novel-Level College French Class, Nanette Ada Zobkov Nov 2014

Ten Integrated Performance Assessments For A Novel-Level College French Class, Nanette Ada Zobkov

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the need for standards-based assessment, researchers created the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA), which connects assessment and instruction, testing learners within an authentic context across three communicative modes. It is a better measure of proficiency, provides feedback to learners, positively impacts instruction, and improves learners' attitudes toward assessment. There are many benefits of the IPA, but many instructors do not know how to create and implement them in the classroom. There is a lack of quality IPA examples available to French teachers, and existing IPAs are for high proficiency levels. The author believes that if teachers had access …

The Gathings Committee: Censorship, Society, And Paperback Literature In The 1950s, Jim Stallings

Theses and Dissertations

In 1952, Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn appointed Arkansas Democrat Representative Ezekiel Candler "Took" Gathings to lead a select committee and investigate the potential effect of allegedly obscene literature on the morals of American society. The House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials, informally known as the Gathings Committee, issued a majority report in 1953. It claimed the distribution of obscene literature was a pervasive problem, and recommended the federal government censor the distribution of material deemed inappropriate. Ultimately, the House of Representatives discarded the committee's recommendations. However, questions of whether or not literature could affect social morals, or …

Antibacterial Gene Transfer Across The Tree Of Life, Jason A. Metcalf, Lisa J. Funkhouser-Jones, Kristen A. Brileya, Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Seth R. Bordenstein Nov 2014

Antibacterial Gene Transfer Across The Tree Of Life, Jason A. Metcalf, Lisa J. Funkhouser-Jones, Kristen A. Brileya, Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Seth R. Bordenstein

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Though horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is widespread, genes and taxa experience biased rates of transferability. Curiously, independent transmission of homologous DNA to archaea, bacteria, eukaryotes, and viruses is extremely rare and often defies ecological and functional explanations. Here, we demonstrate that a bacterial lysozyme family integrated independently in all domains of life across diverse environments, generating the only glycosyl hydrolase 25 muramidases in plants and archaea. During coculture of a hydrothermal vent archaeon with a bacterial competitor, muramidase transcription is upregulated. Moreover, recombinant lysozyme exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial action in a dose-dependent manner. Similar to bacterial transfer of antibiotic resistance genes, …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Background:

Mobile bottom fishing, such as trawling and dredging, is the most widespread direct human impact on marine benthic systems. Knowledge of the impacts of different gear types on different habitats, the species most sensitive to impacts and the potential for habitats to recover are often needed to inform implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries and strategies for biodiversity conservation. This knowledge helps to identify management options that maximise fisheries yield whilst minimising negative impacts on benthic systems.

Methods/Design:

The methods are designed to identify and collate evidence from experimental studies (e.g. before/after, control/impact) and comparative studies (spanning a …
