Thermal Feasibility Analysis Of Low Heat Rejection Engine, Peter Johnston Northrop Dec 2014

Thermal Feasibility Analysis Of Low Heat Rejection Engine, Peter Johnston Northrop

Open Access Theses

This thesis describes the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) directed analysis used to solve an overheating problem occurring during the warm up period of the crossbred ZKA26 engine in previous research. Internal combustion engine powered generator sets are the primary choice for worldwide operation. Of these generator sets, hardly any use internal combustion automobile engines that are modified beyond the specifications of the manufacturer. These specifications, while well qualified for their intended purpose, are poorly qualified for steady RPM operation as they are used in generator operation. This lack of qualification results in key losses of operational efficiency. This research effort …

Conventional Latex/Nanolatex Blends, Frank N. Jones, Ravi G. Joshi, Theodore Provder

Patents

Nanolatexes comprising functional monomers and methods for making nanolatexes. Compositions comprising between about 3:97 and 90:10 (w/w) nanolatex particles to conventional latex particles. Because of the particle size differences between the conventional and nanolatexes, the nanolatexes may distribute themselves advantageously amongst the conventional latexes during coalescence, resulting in films having unexpected properties. In particular, when the average particle size of the conventional latex is about six times larger than the average particle size of the nanolatex, a composition comprising a ratio of 1 conventional latex particle for every 25 nanolatex particles results in unexpectedly strong (large Young's modulus) and smooth …

Combination Of Insulin And Ascorbate To Enhance Wound Healing, Kurt Musselmann, John R. Hassell, Brad Kane, Bridgette Alexandrou

USF Patents

Provided is a method of stimulating collagen synthesis and proteoglycan (lumican and keratocan) accumulation. Collagenase isolated keratocytes were cultured with or without insulin with or without ascorbate. Insulin stimulates the synthesis of collagen but does not affect the accumulation of lumican and keratocan. Insulin plus ascorbate, however, stimulates the synthesis of collagen and increased the accumulation of these proteoglycans. The accumulation of PGDS, a KSPG that does not interact with collagen, is not affected by ascorbate. Only the collagen made in the presence of ascorbate was pepsin resistant. EDB overrode the effects of ascorbate on pepsin resistance and proteoglycan accumulation.

Studying The Amount Of Angular Movement (Momentum) Of The Captain During Shooting And Its Contribution To The Values Of The Speed Of The Ball When Performing The Skill Of Shooting With The Hand Ball, Dergham Abdul Salem Nimah, Yarub Abdul Baqi Daikh

Modern Sport

The skill of shooting from a jump is considered one of the important and challenging skills, especially when the distance is long. In such cases, the player must face the goal to allow freedom in shooting, which requires specific movements in various body parts to change the player's speed, thereby increasing the ball’s speed. This increase in ball speed is crucial for shooting in certain situations. Therefore, it is essential to move certain body parts to generate speed, which is transferred to the ball. The speed in shooting results from the transfer of motion from the lower limbs to the …

Modeling, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Memristors, Anas Mazady Dec 2014

Modeling, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Memristors, Anas Mazady

Doctoral Dissertations

The term “memristor” was coined by L. Chua from its two distinct functional characteristics, memory and resistor. From the symmetry argument of the circuit element and circuit variable matrix, memristor is deemed as the fourth fundamental circuit element, after resistor, capacitor, and inductor. Memristor switching and observed I-V characteristics are explained utilizing the underlying physics of the device in terms of the formation and rupture of filaments. Three different conduction mechanisms, namely - filament assisted tunneling current, bulk tunneling current and currents flowing through low and high conductivity filaments give rise to the total current in memristive systems. DC and …

Blurring Group Boundaries: The Impact Of Subgroup Threats On Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Phia S. Salter, Caroline Hirko Dec 2014

Blurring Group Boundaries: The Impact Of Subgroup Threats On Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Phia S. Salter, Caroline Hirko

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

We examined the outcomes of an extinction threat (possible discontinuation of a group’s symbolic or actual existence) to one’s nation on global citizenship identification and related prosocial values. In Study 1, participants showed a drop in global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat). In Study 2, participants reported lower global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat) and the perception that one’s normative environment did not support a global citizen identity mediated the relationship between threat and identification. Furthermore, the threat was shown to indirectly predict lower endorsement for prosocial values and behaviors …

Examining The Global Financial Crisis From A Virtue Theory Lens, Aliza D. Racelis

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

As the financial crisis of 2008-9 has continued to affect the global economy, many wonder whether the proposed solutions contribute to a more stable financial system as well as to better human behaviour. While the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) Report (2011) identified the factors essential to explaining the causes of the financial crisis as having included credit and housing bubbles, nontraditional mortgages, credit ratings and securitization, financial institutions concentrated correlated risk, leverage and liquidity risk, contagion risk, shock and panic, failure in virtue has also been very patent in the crisis, foremost of them being: excessive leverage and imprudent …

Background

Thymic stromal lymphoproetin (TSLP) is a cytokine secreted by the airway epithelium in response to respiratory viruses and it is known to promote allergic Th2 responses in asthma. This study investigated whether virally-induced secretion of TSLP is directional in nature (apical vs. basolateral) and/or if there are TSLP-mediated effects occurring at both sides of the bronchial epithelial barrier in the asthmatic state.

Methods

Primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) from control (n = 3) and asthmatic (n = 3) donors were differentiated into polarized respiratory tract epithelium under air-liquid interface (ALI) conditions and treated apically with dsRNA (viral surrogate) …

Center Pivot Sprinkler Distribution Uniformity Impacts On The Spatial Variability Of Evapotranspiration, Daniel Howes, Sean Ellenson, Lucas Hoffmann, Franklin Gaudi Dec 2014

Center Pivot Sprinkler Distribution Uniformity Impacts On The Spatial Variability Of Evapotranspiration, Daniel Howes, Sean Ellenson, Lucas Hoffmann, Franklin Gaudi

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Understanding variable evapotranspiration (ET) throughout a field can help maximize yield on a per-acre basis, as well as assist with proper irrigation scheduling. The results from this study indicate that irrigation system distribution uniformity (DU) has a significant effect on the uniformity of ET during water-stressed periods. The study site involved intensely managed forage (alfalfa and winter grain hay) irrigated by center pivots being supplied with reclaimed water near Palmdale, California. During spring and early summer 2007 the center pivots were operating under deficit irrigation. In 2010, after the installation of reservoirs, water was applied to meet full evapotranspiration (ETc) …

Chalcogen Bonds In Complexes Of Soxy (X, Y = F, Cl) With Nitrogen Bases, Luis Miguel Azofra, Ibon Alkorta, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

SOF2, SOFCl, and SOCl2 were each paired with a series of N bases. The potential energy surface of the binary complexes were characterized by MP2 calculations with double and triple-ξ basis sets, extrapolated to complete sets. The most stable configurations contained a S···N chalcogen bond with interaction energies as high as 6.8 kcal/mol. These structures are stabilized by a Nlp→σ*(S−Z) electron transfer (Z = O, F, Cl), complemented by Coulombicattraction of N to theσ-hole opposite the Z atom. N···S−F and N···S−Cl chalcogen bonds are stronger than N···S = O interactions.Formation of each chalcogen bond elongates all of the internalcovalent bonds …
