A Kinect-Based System For Automatic Recording Of Some Pigeon Behaviors, Damian Lyons, James Macdonall, Kelly Cunningham Dec 2014

A Kinect-Based System For Automatic Recording Of Some Pigeon Behaviors, Damian Lyons, James Macdonall, Kelly Cunningham

Faculty Publications

Contact switches and touch screens are the state of the art for recording pigeons’ pecking behavior. Recording other behavior, however, requires a different sensor for each behavior, and some behaviors cannot easily be recorded. We present a flexible and inexpensive image-based approach to detecting and counting pigeon behaviors that is based on the Kinect sensor from Microsoft. Although the system is as easy to set up and use as the standard approaches, it is more flexible because it can record behaviors in addition to key pecking. In this article, we show how both the fast, fine motion of key pecking …

Dangerous Diagnoses, Risky Assumptions, And The Failed Experiment Of “Sexually Violent Predator” Commitment, Deirdre M. Smith Dec 2014

Dangerous Diagnoses, Risky Assumptions, And The Failed Experiment Of “Sexually Violent Predator” Commitment, Deirdre M. Smith

Oklahoma Law Review

In its 1997 opinion, Kansas v. Hendricks, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law that reflected a new model of civil commitment. The targets of this new commitment law were dubbed “Sexually Violent Predators” (SVPs), and the Court upheld indefinite detention of these individuals on the assumption that there is a psychiatrically distinct class of individuals who, unlike typical recidivists, have a mental condition that impairs their ability to refrain from violent sexual behavior. And, more specifically, the Court assumed that the justice system could reliably identify the true “predators,” those for whom this unusual and extraordinary deprivation of liberty …

Schooling The Supreme Court, Christine Chabot Dec 2014

Schooling The Supreme Court, Christine Chabot

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Supreme Court Justices' uniform professional backgrounds have drawn increasing criticism. Yet it is unclear how diverse professional training would affect the Court's decisions. This Article offers the first empirical analysis of how Justices with diverse professional training vote: It examines a unique period when Justices with formal legal education sat with Justices who entered the profession by reading the law alone.

The study finds that Justices' levels of agreement and politically independent voting vary significantly according to their professional training. In cases which divided the Court, Justices who shared the benefit of formal legal education (1) voted together more often …

Design And Development Of The Portable Build Platform And Heated Travel Envelope For The Multi3d Manufacturing System, Steven Daniel Ambriz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The final product functionality of parts produced by Additive Manufacturing (AM) can, in part, be improved by the inclusion of multi-material capabilities. The “Multi3D system” that is under development at The University of Texas at El Paso uses material extrusion printing (or fused deposition modeling), solid conductor wire embedding, direct-write, component placement, and micromaching to enable multi-material fabrication. The Multi3D was designed to transport a workpiece between manufacturing stations via a six-axis robot, portable build platform (PBP), and a controlled temperature environment or chamber that travels to each manufacturing station. The heated travel envelope (HTE) was included to mitigate thermal …

Editorial Comment: What Are Nonprofit Hospitals Reporting As Community Building Activities As Community Benefit?, Julie Trocchio

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

The paper presented by these researchers, is, as would be expected, well thought out and supported by their careful research. It correctly concludes that the topic of hospitals’ role in addressing social determinants of health deserves more attention. However, in the future, examination of the IRS Form 990 Schedule H Part II, Community Building, will not be the best way to do it.

Efficacy Of Female Rat Models In Translational Cardiovascular Aging Research, Kevin M. Rice, J. C. Fannin, C. Gillette, Eric Blough

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. Aging is a primary risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease as well as cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Aging is a universal process that all humans undergo; however, research in aging is limited by cost and time constraints. Therefore, most research in aging has been done in primates and rodents; however it is unknown how well the effects of aging in rat models translate into humans. To compound the complication of aging gender has also been indicated as a risk factor for various cardiovascular diseases. …

Promoting Participation In Sustainable Living Educational Programming Events Among Nonenvironmentally-Motivated Individuals: The Importance Of Key Informant Involvement, Brooklynn J. Wynveen Dec 2014

Promoting Participation In Sustainable Living Educational Programming Events Among Nonenvironmentally-Motivated Individuals: The Importance Of Key Informant Involvement, Brooklynn J. Wynveen

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Many social science researchers agree that overconsumption of resources and consumer goods is a major problem in Western culture today, particularly in the United States. Thus, promoting sustainable behavior among the public in rural and urban areas alike is important. Although existing research offers suggestions for promoting sustainable behaviors among environmentally-motivated audiences, a void remains with respect to encouraging non-environmentally-motivated individuals to adopt more sustainable behaviors. In response, I conducted a formative experiment aimed specifically at: 1) fostering participation among non-environmentally motivated individuals in sustainable living educational programming events, and 2) promoting subsequent behavior change among those participants in the …

Conceptualizing A Trauma Informed Child Welfare System For Indian Country, James C. Caringi, Hal A. Lawson Dec 2014

Conceptualizing A Trauma Informed Child Welfare System For Indian Country, James C. Caringi, Hal A. Lawson

Journal of Family Strengths

The creation of trauma-informed systems that use evidence-based, culturally competent interventions for affected children and families is a priority in Indian Country because mounting evidence from adverse childhood experiences research with American Indians documents the incidence and prevalence of trauma. What is more, an emergent line of research documents secondary traumatic stress (STS) in the adult workforce, which reduces their ability to help affected children and families and contributes to workforce turnover. The development of a trauma-informed system entails evidence-based detection, treatment, and prevention mechanisms for children, families, and STS-affected social services professionals. With tribal child welfare systems as a …

Elevating Substance Over Procedure: The Retroactivity Of Miller V. Alabama Under Teague V. Lane, Brandon Buskey, Daniel Korobkin

City University of New York Law Review

This Article proposes a unique framework establishing that the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Miller v. Alabama, which forbids states from automatically sentencing juveniles to life imprisonment without any meaningful opportunity for release, must apply retroactively to hundreds of juveniles whose convictions and life sentences were already final at the time of the decision. Such a framework is timely and critical. The lower state and federal courts are divided on the question, and the Supreme Court is likely to settle the issue within the next year. The Article reviews how, absent guidance from the Supreme Court, a host of …

Evidence-Based Elements Of Child Welfare In-Home Services, Lisa E. D'Aunno, Shamra Boel-Studt, Miriam J. Landsman Dec 2014

Evidence-Based Elements Of Child Welfare In-Home Services, Lisa E. D'Aunno, Shamra Boel-Studt, Miriam J. Landsman

Journal of Family Strengths

In this article we discuss evidence-based elements of effective in-home child welfare services as a foundation for advancing the evidence base for family-centered child welfare practice. In 2009 the U.S. Children’s Bureau established the National Resource Center for In-Home Services to build the capacity of state and tribal child welfare agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of children and youth in their homes, prevent their initial placement or re-entry into out-of-home care, and to support families in their role as primary caregivers. Through a nationwide assessment of in-home services conducted over four years of research and technical assistance, we …

Child Welfare Involved Caregiver Perceptions Of Family Support In Child Mental Health Treatment, Geetha Gopalan, Mary Acri, Marina Lalayants, Cole Hooley, Eddie Einbinder Dec 2014

Child Welfare Involved Caregiver Perceptions Of Family Support In Child Mental Health Treatment, Geetha Gopalan, Mary Acri, Marina Lalayants, Cole Hooley, Eddie Einbinder

Journal of Family Strengths

Families involved in the child welfare system have disproportionately high rates of child mental health difficulties coupled with co-occurring stressors which impede access to child mental health treatment and therapeutic benefits. Peer support providers, an emerging workforce within child-serving settings, show particular promise at facilitating access to services, particularly for individuals with stigmatizing conditions. However, the perceived benefits of utilizing peer support providers from the perspective of child welfare-involved families is unknown. The purpose of this qualitative study is to describe peer support provided services and their perceived benefits within the Multiple Family Group (MFG) service delivery model, a clinician- …

Strengths Based Approaches To Practice And Family Drug Courts: Is There A Fit?, Margaret H. Lloyd, Jody P. Brook

Journal of Family Strengths

Substance abuse among child welfare service recipients has proven to be a challenging obstacle to child safety, permanence and well-being. The use of family drug courts as a specialized intervention for working with substance affected families has risen dramatically in the past decade, and emanates from the notion of therapeutic jurisprudence. At the same time family drug courts have grown, the use of strengths based approaches to practice has also proliferated among child welfare practitioners. This work examines the intersection of family drug courts and strengths based practices, and encourages to reader to consider that while the court system would …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Introduction Of An Additional Carbon Tax On The Slovenian Economy Considering Different Forms Of Recycling, Matjaž Koman, Aleksandar Kešeljević

Economic and Business Review

This paper outlines some of the environmental and economic implications of an additional CO2 tax of EUR 15/tCO2 in Slovenia in the period 2012-2030 in order to determine whether it yield a double dividend. Authors analyze (using E3ME model) different forms of revenue recycling by reducing the social security contributions of either the employers or the employees or by reducing the public deficit, in order to identify the optimal fiscal instrument for improving the environmental and economic welfare (double dividend). In this policy orientated paper authors argue that a reduction of employee social security contributions has more favourable effect than …

The Relevance Of Employee-Related Ratios For Early Detection Of Corporate Crises, Mario Situm Dec 2014

The Relevance Of Employee-Related Ratios For Early Detection Of Corporate Crises, Mario Situm

Economic and Business Review

The purpose of this study was to analyse whether employee-related ratios derived from accounts have incremental predictive power for the early detection of corporate crises and bankruptcies. Based on the literature reviewed, it can be seen that not much attention has been drawn to this task, indicating that further research is justified. For empirical research purposes, a database of Austrian companies was used for the time period 2003 to 2005 in order to develop multivariate linear discriminant functions for the classification of companies into the two states; bankrupt and non-bankrupt, and to detect the contribution of employee-related ratios in explaining …
